“You watch the news and you read the papers, and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place. People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil. People are axe murderers and monsters and worse. I don’t buy it. Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own—it’s easier to dismiss an opinion as abhorrent than strive to understand it.”
Got it.
“American Couple Dies Tragically While Biking Through ISIS Territory Trying To Prove Evil Does Not Exist,” by Benny Johnson, Daily Caller, August 16, 2018:
An American couple decided to bicycle around the world in an attempt to prove evil does not exist. They chose to bicycle through ISIS territory and ISIS killed them.
The news of their deaths broke Aug. 8, but their story lives on in a tragic social media history.
Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan left their D.C. government jobs nearly two years ago to embark on a worldwide bike tour. The wide-eyed, optimistic couple kept track of their trips on a website where they posted stunning photos of their travels and whimsical musings on evil, the media and the goodness of people.
In one post, Austin — who is a vegan — said he worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development during Obama’s presidency explained how he and his girlfriend were planning to bike around the world with hopes to meet “generous” and approachable people….
“You watch the news and you read the papers, and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place,” Austin said, “People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil. People are axe murderers and monsters and worse.”
Austin continued, saying that “evil is a make-believe concept.”
“I don’t buy it. Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own—it’s easier to dismiss an opinion as abhorrent than strive to understand it. Badness exists, sure, but even that’s quite rare. By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind. No greater revelation has come from our journey than this.”
Unfortunately, Austin and Geoghegan discovered first-hand that evil does exist in the world when they traveled through a terrorist hotbed.
The couple chose to bike through the Muslim country of Tajikistan with another group of cyclists. They met a gruesome fate when confronted by five members of ISIS.
On July 29th, a car driven by the ISIS members rammed the bikers. The men exited the van and began stabbing the bikers, killing Austin and Geoghegan, along with the other bikers.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a video featuring the killers posing with an ISIS flag and pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. According to the New York Times, the men vowed to kill the “disbelievers.”

It’s the IDEOLOGY, stupid!
That means that an IDEOLOGY can be EVIL.
Islam doesn’t promote peace, but political struggle to destroy old cultures and replace everything with Islam and to do so by all means possible, whether ethical or not.

BAN ISLAM = PROBLEM SOLVED
Wellington says
No, Andy. Islam does not need to be banned anymore than does Nazism or Marxism. What is necessary is that it be exposed for the iniquity which it is, in a league with the other two totalitarian ideologies I mentioned above. Exposure, not banning, is what is paramount. Be careful, Andy, that in trying to preserve freedom you don’t destroy it.
Andy says
You have the right to your opinion Wellington, and I have the right to mine.
I believe Islam should be banned and it should have been banned after the 9/11/2001 attacks in the USA and the Judeo-Christian World should have taken the lead of the USA and followed suit.
This is my opinion and freedom of speech belief about the subject.
Andy says
Wellington with all due respect to you, the world has been exposed to Islam for 1400 years and our modern world knows full well by now what we are dealing with.
If we don’t change course and stop appeasing Islam we are going to lose our freedoms.
gravenimage says
Agreed, Wellington.
We need to isolate Islam–stop importing ravening Muslims into our own civilized nations, and realize we cannot safely go on fun bicycling trips in the heart of Dar-al-Islam. (of course, most of us here already know the latter).
Wellington says
Andy: I have NEVER denied you the right to your opinion, whether directly or implicitly. You have set up a straw man and then knocked it down. You have every right, one I fully support, to say that Islam should be banned in Western nations.
But I believe you are dead wrong in using this approach. Gee, would you have wanted to ban Marxism in Western nations during the Cold War? How about Nazism in America during WWII? Accurate and proper exposure of evil is enough in a free society. The “banning thing” will only harm freedom. It is a desperate measure that is not necessary. Perhaps one day you will grasp this verity. Perhaps.
Well, we do agree on one thing and that is that Islam really, really sucks. So, our “only” disagreement is what to do about this. I write all this in a friendly way and mean no animosity towards you.
Savvy Kafir says
“Exposing” Islam is not enough. That won’t make the problem go away. That won’t make Muslims stop being Muslims, and doing what Muslims are supposed to do. And it won’t save the West from being transformed into Islamic societies.
We need to take ACTION. We need to stop Muslim immigration into the West, then deport all Muslims from the West.
gravenimage is right. Islam needs to be isolated, totally & permanently. That’s the only way the civilized world will remain civilized.
In this conflict with Islam in the West, our distaste for banning ideologies & worldviews could be the death of Western Civilization. We need to make an exception with Islam, because Islam poses an exceptional threat.
Blurb1000 says
Agree! Forget ban Islam. It’s much better and more easy to ban muslims. That is more physical and more practical to get a grip on.
Wellington says
Savvy Kafir: I’m all for banning all Muslim immigration to the West but I would also note that this would follow as a matter of course IF Islam were exposed for the totalitarian ideology which it surely is. After all, Neo-Nazis can be banned. Die-hard Marxists often are as well. Anarchists and syndicalists too. Well then, why not Muslims? Again, the “issue” is not banning but proper identification and thereafter acting upon that accurate identification.
Andy says
No problem, Wellington.
I understand where you are coming from and yes I totally agree with you that Islam sucks.
Islam and Christianity-which most western countries (still are) as of this writing. Thank God, are not compatible with each other, It is like vinegar & oil
Perhaps the JW readers are also aware of this story about the religion of peace:

mortimer says
The freedom of speech is sufficient to deal with Islam. Banning Islam is not needed if the MARKET PLACE of ideas is working and thriving.
HOWEVER, at the moment, POST-MODERNIST SNOWFLAKES and NEO-MARXISTS CANNOT DEBATE, believe they are INFALLIBLE, they live in ECHO CHAMBERS where no discussion or debate occurs … only REPETITION OF SLOGANS… then they assume that since their ideas are INFALLIBLE, that other ideas should be silenced. WRONG?
How can we LEARN anything if we do not challenge EVERYTHING?
BANNING ideas is ABSURD.
REFUTING IDEAS TAKES A *REAL* MAN !!!
LeftisruiningCanada says
Agree.
In the days before the well known, and reviled by leftists to this day, exposure of Communist spies infesting the US government by J McCarthy, it was Democrat policies that banned members of both Communist and Nazi parties from working within those offices.
The parties themselves however were not banned.
This same idea would be well applied to muslims and islam. But just better enforced.
Alien Republican says
“What is necessary is that it be exposed” – I agree with Wellington.
What tech companies do right now is a cleansing to the necessary platforms to inform and expose and that worries me and even more annoyed me as I’m writing on hardware from one of those tech companies.
In my personal opinion the post-modern world has reverted back to the mindset of pre-enlightenment irrationality. The rot has come before islam and is destroying our societies.
I have been aware long before islam entered public discourse (again) that we are living in extraordinary times. I and most of the readers here had the privilege never have do go through the experience of a war.
I don’t believe that this will last forever and I might see the end of it but it won’t be the end of the West.
David says
Number, Islam should be banned just exposing it will do little to nothing.

And all too many “artists” are like this–bad art and worse stupidity. I’m an artist myself, but what that conjures up these days is mostly pretty embarrassing.
I hope some at least learn from this sad case.
Andy says
My pleasure, gravenimage.
The more information we can get out about the so called religion of peace the better.
I have seen some of your art work and you are a very gifted and talented artist.
My daughter is gifted in the drawing/painting department, I tried to encourage her in that direction as a career but her desire to Serve the Country was a higher priority to her., So she chose to go into the military.
I tried to bribe her with a Pug dog (because she always wanted to get a Pug) If she stayed home and not join up in the military but it didn’t work.
She wanted to serve her country, God bless her and God bless ALL Our Service Members and also you gravenimage for your encouraging kind words.
Thank you,
Very Best Regards,

P.S. Please if you can say a little prayer before your bed-time for my daughter & all our men and women who are serving, Her name is Mary-Anne.

Thank you, Andy–I will. Where is Mary-Anne serving?
And some artists have indeed done both–many have contributed, for instance, to the Army in-house publication Stars and Stripes, or doing posters.
And maybe she can use her artistic talent later in her civilian career.

It is unbelievable to me that people are more afraid of being called a racist then telling the truth about the so called religion of peace.
Will they still be defending Islam as they are going to be burned in a cage or thrown off a building or there head is about to be cut off.
I guess they will look at the moslem captor and say but, but , I’m one of you, I’m not a racist”.
My whole family loves Winston Churchill (Wish we had a Man like that now) here is one of his quotes:

This is what is happening in our world today, Too much Appeasement. Stop political correctness and start telling it like it is and don’t be afraid to be called a racist, because I guarantee you, that if you start telling the truth about Islam, YOU WILL BE CALLED A RACIST.

Andy, Banning may not help as those savages will cry foul with “Islamophobia” and so on. There should be a concerted effort to eradicate Islam as it is a scum of all ideology which has far outlived all other evil ideologies.
Andy says
HI Raja
I don’t want to eradicate Islam, I just want to be LEFT ALONE and not be ramrodded with Islamic/diversity.
Islam can stay in there Islamic dominated lands and leave (still as of this writing) Judeo-Christian lands alone.
JUST LEAVE US ALONE.
LeftisruiningCanada says
Sadly that may be akin to saying that you don’t want to shoot the rabid dog, you just want it to leave you alone.
Some things can’t be reasoned with or held at bay….
Andy says
The biggest problem we have now is that we have brainwashed people and idiotic paid/off globalist son a bitch politicians in the Western Judeo-Christian World which have allowed a LOT OF RABID DOGS to just walk, cross, crawl, fly whatever into our worlds and we can’t do a damn thing about it now because of political correctness and the dreaded Racist world.
There numbers are going to increase while ours is decreasing which spells very much danger and possibly the end of our Judeo-Christian Civilization.
Internal strife and War I’m afraid is on the horizon for our Western Judeo-Christian Civilized World, due to past mistakes done by our leaders, who have brought this on the nations and allowed it to happen.

Fools. Right now I feel only contempt for them. Perhaps later I will feel some sorrow for this couple but probably not. If this comes across as too harsh, frankly I don’t care since for civilization to survive it must recognize that evil exists and that it must be crushed. Those who don’t grasp this truth are a menace both to themselves and to mankind at large. For example, this couple—now dead.
gravenimage says
I feel both sorrow *and* contempt for them. This may sound contradictory, but it is not.

Yours is an understandable “approach” to this unnecessary tragedy, gravenimage. As is often the case, reasonable minds can differ respecting how to assess a particular “event”—such as this one. Andy, I meant “poor” in that they needlessly lost their lives. Obviously they were at least fairly financially well off in that they could afford to take a year off and cycle around the world.
Andy says
Yes GI,
Your right.
They must have had some savings to take that trip, unfortunately, It was the last trip they would ever have in this world.
sad.

Andy, perhaps they didn’t have to save. They could be Agency and this was a front. Pretty sorry one if so. They both were federal employees and one of the FBI Traitors wife was buried in the NIH or something like that but the LAUYER work she did sure spelt Agency! Just throwin it out there.
.
Either way pretty stupid. I wouldn’t travel there without a well armed Infantry platoon as protection. Plus I did not like their site. Something just didn’t right about it to me, like it was just thrown together for cover. What else did they have to do many evenings/night as they rested. I expected a lot more interaction.

Tajikistan is a safe country, though some factional fighting spilling over from nearby Afghanistan (as well as local warlordism) still occurs in Tajikistan. Visitors should keep abreast of the security situation and not take any unnecessary risks.

When I read this story on another news site a few days ago, I thought about my friend. This couple seemed to be idealistic in their assessment of what people are all about. They posted stories about how many people had assisted them along the way, when they broke down, became ill, were hungry, etc these accounts only increased their ideas of people as having no evil thoughts or plans..
They just didn’t realize the danger of encountering someone who only wished them ill will, and made sure they died there, along with the other two bicyclists. By the time they knew, ti was too late.
It’s a sad story, but there are lessons in this for others who want only to see the good in people, and refuse to recognize the evil, that does, indeed, exist.

In the the movie “Unforgiven” there’s a scene in which Clint Eastwood is talking with a young cowboy who is having some second thoughts after he had just shot and killed his first man. Some people will kill you just because they think you’ve got it coming. This is what Muhammad taught his followers …. that “infidels” deserve death and that the world would be closer to perfect without any of them in it. In a perfect world people would not kill each other. Strive to be perfect but realize that not all people are perfect and keep in mind: we’ve all got it coming.

ISLAM IS NOT HUMAN-FRIENDLY.
Islam is 22 cults in one: a DEATH CULT, an HONOUR-KILLING CULT, a RAPE CULT, an EXTORTION CULT, a PLUNDER CULT, a CENSORSHIP CULT, a MISOGYNY CULT, a LIE CULT, a PEDOPHILIA CULT, a SADOMASOCHISM CULT, an OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE CULT, a SUPREMACISM CULT, a JEW HATRED CULT, a CHRISTIANOPHOBIA CULT, a MALE CHAUVINIST CULT, an INBREEDING CULT, an OBSCURANTISM CULT, a SUPERSTITION CULT, a PERSONALITY CULT, a CRUELTY TO ANIMALS CULT, a GROUP-THINK CULT, a SUICIDE CULT.
FYI says
The naivete of these fools beggars belief. They did not, however, deserve to be executed by these demonically filthy,Godless, islamic savages.
That it is morally wrong to commit intentional homicide appears to be lost on the muslim.
That it is a violation of an actual commandment of God{the sixth},and therefore a sin AGAINST GOD is beyond the reasoning faculties of the Godless muslims.
And even “allah” himself does not obey God’s official Laws as we see in his murderous, unholy, koran which contains endless commands to do evil and violence.
Yes,these muslims are Godless beasts,because despite their false piety and devotion to their moon god “allah” (the best of deceivers),they do not even conform to God’s Moral laws given via Moses{10+2 commandments}
Not even ONE of God’s Commandments do these demonic islamic savages obey!
Not even ONE!
And they think their god “allah” will reward their putrid, demonic souls with paradise..for doing EVIL:that is the COMPLETE OPPOSITE to how God works.
The whole point of God giving us His commandments was to reveal his laws,EXPECTING them to be obeyed:the islamic brain appears unable to grasp that fact.
What choice would you make?:-
“slay the unbeliever” koran 2:191..allah’s murderous command to do EVIL
OR
“Thou shalt not kill” {6th commandment}…God’s command to REFRAIN from murdering.
A morally good person, even someone of no religion would see that….
The correct moral choice is of course to OBEY the Sixth Commandment.
But muslims believe they are free to ignore the 6th commandment{and all the others!..} and follow the commandment-of-God violating koranic teachings of allah the best of deceivers.
Such understanding appears completely beyond the capacity of the islamic brain to
fathom.
isis are fuel for the eternal fire:they are not destined for any paradise. Why would any god reward such evil,commandment-of-God violating savages?
{God does not reward evil:allah the best of deceivers does that..}
But then they follow the islamic false god, allah the “best of deceivers” who does not himself obey God’s Commandments.

I watched it happen to an only child young friend of mine, who’s American Swede mother supported the daughter’s desire to go to Europe for the summer on her “journey” before college. About 1958, she was 18, father successful, could afford, wasn’t in favor, but let her go, alone and unaccompanied. Result: lost forever one teenager, to murder, found months later by detectives, and years later, her murderer. Parents destroyed, and the marriage and funds too.
All who might have counseled wisdom, caution and intelligence failed. Nor were they ever taught how to research for truth for themselves, if they believed they could not trust any of their influencers for advice. Nor were they taught logic, nor wisdoms.
They at minimum could be taught this from the Bible:
Matthew 10:16 16″I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
Matthew 7:15-20 15″Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Two of the most fundamental lessons for all time, let alone in these devious times of evil’s ascendency. Still as true, 2000 some years later, and always.
Nearly none of all those who have the charge to advise and counsel, and be knowledgeable were responsibly so informed. And others lied. So, there they were, sheep going into the wolves domain, unwise and uncounseled.
“Islam is the fundamental training of human parasites, to amputate, murder, rape, torture, hate, inflict maximum pain, control women, commit rape sex, and marriage abuses, even with or onto tiny children, and lie, thieve, commit crime unlimited, with unthinkable atrocities on humankind and other species, too, and never love anyone, except sex, and 72 virgins in mythical afterlife. That sums up 1400 years of history, the longest war in world history, their koran, hadiths, sura, and their sharia, succinctly!!!!!” – via mh
Added is the truth, ‘FOLLOWERS OF A TRULY PEACEFUL RELIGION, DO NOT COMMAND TO CUT OFF THE HEADS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE’, for not believing, or leaving islam, as apostates, etc.…
Islam lies in perfect opposition to the principles and practice of Christianity, and Judaism, too.
From another article elsewhere:
““I treat others with respect”, says one of the police,” and I expect the same from others.”
“Learning curve needed. Islam does not expect or instruct any such outlook. “
[As well as lying and pure underhanded deviousness, and that “allah is the best of deceivers” k. 3:54; 7:99; 8:30 and muslim are taught to lie in many named ways,]
“Muslims are “the best of peoples”, Koran 3:110. The kuffar, “filth”, are “the vilest of beasts”, K. 98:6.
“Let them find in you harshness”, commands K. 9:123.
Muslims are merciful to one another but ruthless to the non-muslim, K. 48:29.
“Between us and you enmity and hatred forever”, K. 60:4, part of Islamic law.
“We Muslims have not even a gram of respect for you infidels”, Sharia4Belgium
(https://libertygb.org.uk/news/tariq-ramadan-respect).
There. That is a start.”
With the above considerations evident to us all, a black market among the democrats well known American uneducated (of course for the rawest evidence of this long-term democrat party principle see “J. Gruber” and “B. Rhodes” YouTube, proclaiming depending on the ignorant Americans to get Obamacare deviously past them!) would result from such banning, leading to a further corruption of America’s Founding Principia, which is the opposite of what America needs. Knowledge and education, the rooting out of the massive criminality and corruption which has overtaken America, and which our-my Trump is working to accomplish that Herculean task- the horrific Swamp! Great success partially, and working mightily towards that goal, which we must all, work to assist and support this knowledgeable and true actual American leader.
With respect for all free speech comments, Wellington is right, so to Gravenimage. Only in a massive civil war of violence should any type of martial law such as banning ever be considered, and perhaps, almost certainly, not even then.

Good story! Great points! Thanks for sharing them! I am surprised even people in the West were just as in 1958 as they are now! I thought common sense was still alive at that time!

I can’t believe the level of stupidity of these two people. You don’t want to go around being paranoid and expecting the worst of everybody (ie being the opposite of these two people) but reading the quote from the man, in the article, is nauseating. It is living in such a fantasy land that, whether it is ISIS murderers or someone else, such people probably aren’t going to stay alive long, believing that “badness is rare”, etc. There’s so much evil (or badness) in Islam. Pretty much all of it. So they were certainly in the wrong place to avoid evil. But these two people, with such a philosophy, would wander into all types of dangerous areas and would be very lucky if they survived. They are the type of people who would hitch hike and be picked up by a serial killer. I can’t remember the details, but there’s been a few cases like this where naïve people have been captured, maybe not killed but held for ransom, usually in Muslim countries. Also, I vaguely remember a couple of Australian guys who were backpacking through some Mexican drug dealing area who were murdered by members of some drug cartel. It was a couple of years back. I thought, at the time, how foolish they were. Probably didn’t have a clue about how bad the area was. People have to have a realistic idea of human nature and be alert to what’s going on around them and the type of area they are in. Especially these days, with Muslim terrorist attacks happening in so many locations.
tim gallagher says
I just wanted to add a couple of comments to what I wrote above. People such as this murdered couple, people who see pretty much all people as good, are exactly the type of people who would support opening the borders and letting all people, all “refugees” who arrive at a country’s borders, into that country. After all, if they think all people are good, and, no doubt, think all cultures equal and full of good people, then they’d say to let everyone in. Such an unrealistic view of life endangers all of us. Nonetheless, it is sad that these two people were murdered. It’s a shame they didn’t wake to reality in time to survive.

I have to say I found it rather sad, Wellington.
When they describe themselves as “just two bright-eyed Americans simply cycling into the horizon” it breaks my heart.
This is what American optimism–normally a good and praiseworthy thing–looks like when drained of all common sense or even residual sense of self-preservation. I feel bad for their families.
By the way, my husband and I recently had a visit from one one of his oldest friends, whom he had met in college. He said that his son had gone to Tajikistan briefly and had been thinking of going back. He was very relieved when his son instead stayed at school in the Northeast US–and all the more so after hearing about this story. So some people do learn.
Mac-101 says
Thanks for the link. If those kids could see the nasty comments posted in the last couple days maybe they would believe in evil. I didn’t see one compassionate one. That bein said, it is a miracle they biked in ALL the areas they did without bein murderd and or at least raped till now. I wouldn’t go to half of them without an armed infantry platoon as bodyguards. I believe I passed through Tajikistan once, however I was part of the 101st. Maybe not. At least one of those Stans, all the Stans appear the same!

Also, how is it possible to bike through Africa without bein killed? Did they have local escorts providing protection? Just think of the wild animals if nothing else! I bet that there are numerous areas in the USA where two yuppies can NOT bike through safely, especially after dark!

Their very last blog, # 39, actually ends with this sinister passage…:
“We climb gradually. The sky greys and it begins to rain. We pass a man standing outside his vehicle and we smile. “Photo!” he shouts.
We get plenty of requests for photographs, traveling as we do. Usually we go along with it, objectifying as it can often be, but some days we just have to say no. Today’s one of those days. We got a late start, and we’re headed up a big pass, and it’s really important we make it to the other side before dark. We’re down one sleeping pad, and it’s going to be cold regardless, and besides, it’s raining right now and we don’t want to stop. We wave, we point to the sky, and shrug.
пожалуйста, he begs. Pozhaluysta—please!
He’s welcome to take a photograph of us riding by, but he seems to want a photograph with us. We apologize, smile, and keep riding.
Five hundred meters later, a sedan passes. It stops up ahead and the man gets out. Before we’re even in earshot he’s miming shutter-presses and mouthing pozhaluysta, pozhaluysta.
We pass, a little more peeved than the last time. Fewer smiles. I shake my head back and forth. He reaches for the back of my bicycle and I bark a firm nyet! in his direction. We ride on.
We don’t make it very far. A gold sedan skirts by us once more. It parks up ahead. This time, two men exit the vehicle. They stand in the middle of the road blocking our path. Pozhaluysta! the first man says, and I can’t tell if it’s an earnest plea or a cruel sneer. In Russian, a lot of things can sound like a cruel sneer.
Nyet! we shout. Leave us alone!
Lauren’s in front and she threads her way in between the two men. She keeps going. I make to follow. I gnash on my pedals, lean to the left, and get in between them.
And then the man on the right pushes me off my bike.”

Chatillon says
Evil is a privation of good. What these murder victims failed to grasp is that “good” can be partially grasped in all sorts of way, so as to lead a band of jihadis to view it as “good” to murder non-Mohammedans. The evil of the Mohammedans’ act is based upon the privation of their knowledge of good. Their knowledge of good contains no Golden Rule, no sense of a Lawful God, no equal justice before the law.
I do not take any Schadenfreude at the deaths of these people, quite likely stereotypes of those who might be found in large cities in the West. But the evil of their demise may yet serve the good of challenging those of their surviving friends and relations who may hold similar pollyannish worldviews. And that would be a major good.
Kepha says
Greetings to Wellington and Gravenimage. I share your belief that we should not sacrifice the First Amendment–even if I hold no candle for Islam. I also nod to Chatillon, who asks us to refrain from Schadenfreude in this case (and God forgive me, I find myself tempted to it).
I consider this murdered young couple and sigh that but for the grace of God, I could’ve been in their position. I was also raised to believe that “science” had somehow gotten us beyond such unenlightened views that people can be and are pretty evil–especially when possessed by an evil faith. But one thing I have also learned from the Old and New Testaments is that I may never deny that the murderers are human, too. Nothing like a good reading of the Bible to expose how we are all sinners who have fallen short of the glory of God, and in need of grace.
As a teacher, I also agree with the posters here who are handing down an indictment against my profession and institution. On the one hand, there is something to be said for recognizing the plurality of beliefs and worldviews in the school community; but on the other hand, enthroning a kind of relativism-as-absolute does indeed get people killed, as this young couple’s tragic fate show clearly shows.
Let me report that in the past school year, when my World History class got into the World Wars, I presented the Armenian, Assyrian, and Anatolian Greek genocides along with the Shoah. I further offered the cases of the Indian subcontinent and the Mizrahi Jews as well as the displacement of the Falastin Arabs. In touching on the “gunpowder empires”, I noted Babur Shah’s boast of massacring nearly 70,000,000 Hindus. I have also left it with my classes that while we are often told of the destructive power of religion, I noted R.J. Rummel’s studies on _Death by Government_, which show that in the 20th century alone, more were murdered in the names of progress and social justice than were killed for heresy in the 15 centuries between the conversion of Constantine and Napoleon’s shutting down the Inquisition. It did get some thinking. I plan to work these into the lessons again.
And, should I ever get called out on this, I am prepared to fight for the Free Speech rights of the minority view in my profession.
Further, I leave it with my students that the source documents of all religions and ideologies are available for scrutiny, and that they should not simply take the media’s word for things. To do so would be intellectually and irresponsible.
Kepha says
While I’m at it, and recognizing fully the evil that is Islam, I continue to pray for the conversion of Muslims to the Messiah Jesus of the Old and New Testaments (NOT the Isa of Qur’an and Hadith) and will support such efforts. There have been humbling and gracious successes in this endeavor in recent years, and I firmly believe that cracking the spiritual foundations of Islam and bringing people to Christ is a far greater victory than any military one (even if I accept Augustine’s just war theory and recognize that sometimes God imposes this fearful temporal judgment on people and nations).

You don’t have to ride a bike in a muslim country to suddenly meet trouble try some cities in the U.S. that have become sanctuary cities or overly diversified work places. Evil does not know race…nor country, nor city but the soul that never heard about the value of mankind. Many muslims can be inviting and kind, and fight off the obligation of the doctrine to slay the infidel or visiting person. But it could be dangerous to do so if observed by a fellow muslim in a muslim country. We are according to a comment by our former president the largest muslim country……and already have 3300 mosques where the quran is taught and so is the doctrine of jihad. If we don’t want to be in a country of jihadist, the training centers and migration and building has to go away. In my opinion it is too risky if not removed.

To not be aware that some races, some countries and some cities are more likely to be dangerous to your well-being than others is also a kind of naivete. It is the same kind of thinking that says “All religions lead to God” and suchlike.
Mac-101 says
Exactly, did these kids bike through Inner American Cities also, especially after dark?
LeftisruiningCanada says
It’s a good point.
There are actually quite a lot of cyclists who pass along the Pamir highway every year, and i’ve not heard of any trouble finding them before this. There is even a national tourist organization in Tajikistan (and Kyrgyzstan too) which helps travelers find homestays in villages along the way.
The whole of central asia hasn’t, until this, been safer for travelers for quite a long time, and all of the Stans, though sadly not Afghanistan (which used to be the grooviest place to hang out not too long ago), are becoming more and more tourist friendly. The recent death of Uzbekistans mad and aged dictator for instance has brought about changes to visa requirements that seemed impossible 10 years back.
But they all know the danger of their more serious minded muslim brothers, who obviously want to make their lands kuffar frei.
Mac-101 says
Left. YA, Afghanistan was the party place back with the Soviets, at least in Kabul. Did you KNOW Dr Timothy Leary escaped Prison back in the late 1970s with the help of the Weathermen/SDS and Black Panthers, later to be Obama’s friends, and went to Libya? From there he went to Afghanistan and hung out till the Agency did a snatch on him. LOL!
LeftisruiningCanada says
That’s interesting Mac. Smells like a whole lotta leftist bedfellows to me.
Mac-101 says
Left, it is even crazier than that. I spent a week about 10 years ago trackin ALL I could on Dr Timothy Leary. It was because I couldn’t take the JFK BS anymoe about a single bullet and a lone gunman. Especially after I ran across an article in Readers Digest about the JFK Stuck Motorcycle tape/Dictaphone drum. I’ll git into that if you care to later, let me know.
\.
Well, Leary was most likely an Agency associate who had a contract to test LSD on people. He actually used Charles Manson and his surf city boys and their wild parties to test it. ALL was good and the Agency most likely wanted to squash it and around 1969 or there abouts, BAD Acids and trips started to be all over the place. I need not tell you about Charlie. Well they even shared a cell at one time.
.
The escape is crazy and the Senate Church Committee around 1973 or so stated that 55% of the KKK, 25% of the Weathermen and 15% of the Black Panthers were gubermint agents or informants. That explains the escape and Obama’s bein Mentored by Bill Aires and None of these terrorist doin time and ending up with chushy professorships!
.
Well the JFK connection goes to the murder of Mary Cabot Myers who’s ex ole man was Agency and a Operation Mockinbird participant. Well Mary was a good friend of Dr Leary as she was very close to JFK. She’d move into the White House as soon as Jackie would go on her travels. She partied hardy with JFK and smoked weed and possibly dropped ACID. There was a CIA operation to give powerful politicians in Washington LSD. No one ever claimed for sure JFK was one of the targets..
.
Well after JFK got wacked she told her neighbor that she had an extensive diary with ALL the White House partying. She got wacked the next day I , I believe in the same park Vince Foster and Sandra Lebe were found. Her house was trashed by the #1 agent Angleton, or something like that, and her diary never did surface.
.
Anyone please, I can’t say any of this is ALL related. But there are thousands of these dots that make a picture and they are not hard to document individually!
gravenimage says
This is not about race, but ideology.
eduardo odraude says
Agreed. There is no race that has an aggressive, expansionist, totalitarian program and a billion plus members. Being opposed to Islam is no more a racial question than is being opposed to Stalinism. To overemphasize race is to reduce human beings to material factors and lose freedom. Once everything is conceived as material, there is no place for free will. To overemphasize race is to depart from the Judeo-Christian foundations of our civilization. There would be little point in fighting Islam if we were only doing that in order to bring in some race-based system of society. If we did that, it would be our downfall.

Aside from their somewhat naive view of the world, which is far from unique to this couple, the story brings me only sadness.
Sadness, because most people in most places in the world don’t really want to harm anyone. Look around their blog to see how usual it was for people all over the middle east and central asia to be kind and welcoming rather than hostile….
Sadness because unreal worldviews and therefore unrealistic expectations of the world are so dominant in our schools and universities and culture at the moment. Thank you leftist political ideologies.
Sadness because their idealism, though speaking of a certain lostness and nihilism, things not at all unusual with younger folks these days, led a young couple into a dangerous place.
And sadness because, before it all, mohammad has scored yet another in a long long line of murderous hit jobs by proxy upon people going about their business without bowing down to his cult.
islam is at fault here. And we’re having more cyclists killed in our own backyard than out on the shitty ‘roads’ of far off ‘Stans. Because of islam. Naivety just means you don’t see it coming.

The killers commented, “given that both Brad and Janet did not believe in protein they were on their last legs anyway. This was what you weak-willed-westerners would call a mercy-killing. But we did it for our faith!”

If the photo is indeed the murdered couple, I am further saddened. They are people I know too well–not those exact same people, but people just like them. The healthy, confident, attractive smiles of those who know that they are “on the right side of history” and that “science” is on their side; that they are the truly “educated” while people who believe there’s such a thing as real, moral evil are beinghted “barbarians”; the easy assurance that if they are good, progressive, “open” people the world will hold no terrors or dangers for them.
O, God, forgive us that we educators have produced such a breed that seems to have overrun our whole civilization!
Once upon a time, they said that an American conservative was just a liberal who’d been mugged. But now, I sometimes wonder if people are still capable of learning from harsh experience.
L says
Yes. In terms of their context and travel experiences to the time the photo was taken, i’d say they have the look of people on an adventure where everything has gone well so far; the look of optimism after many strangers have greeted them with open arms; the look of people who have let their guard down because being guarded takes more effort and suspicion than is comfortable.
But then again, who can be guarded enough to protect themselves from a car attack, when, as a traveling cyclist, you get passed by thousands of cars everyday, some of them not well driven to start with?
Kepha says
L: I just got home from a trip to Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro, and Greece. In Bologna, the Church of San Petronio of the Piazzo Maggiore (which holds a meridian and the place where Chalres V was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) had an armed soldier as well as police guarding the entry, and people were not allowed to sit on the front steps to relax. Why? Muslims threatened to bomb it due to a 15th century fresco of the Last Judgment which shows Muhammad lying naked on a rock in Hell. In the Cique Terre, I had to yell bloody murder to get an African trinket seller off of my wife, and came close to walloping him with my cane (I admit that I lose my pacifistic streak when wife, kids, or grandkids are threatened).
I’ve done a bit of traveling myself, and have run into lots of welcoming and generous people. Try the Far East with a decent command of a local language while looking like an obvious “ousider”. For all their reputation for snootiness towards Americans with badly mandage high school French, I myself found the French decent enough. But, the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs or someone really ought to put up posters reading “Your Brain: Don’t Leave Home Without It.”
Then again, I’m sure those two poor lost souls who got knifed in Tajikistan were probably accounted by their peers as highly intelligent. 🙁

Glad the street hawker didn’t get violent with you, as happens sometimes.
It’s interesting to see several comments on the cyclists blog talking about how the couple didn’t know the area was dangerous, and that they should have been told that violent muslims were in the area.
This is the thing i find most irritating about the whole thing: You’re a cyclist, you of all travelers should be doing the most research about where you’re going to travel.
But then, here in Canada too i find in so many folks a basic lack of self protective thinking, even in daily life. It’s as if they believe anything that might happen to them will be someone else’s fault, and everything will be taken care of by another party.
