It wasn’t implemented? Really? On July 26, 2017, I posted this at Jihad Watch: “Google bows to Muslim pressure, changes search results to conceal criticism of Islam and jihad.” In it, I recounted Texas imam Omar Suleiman’s successful effort to compel Google to drop search results about Islam-related terms and topics that reflected negatively upon Islam. Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported happily: “Google’s first page results for searches of terms such as ‘jihad’, ‘shariah’ and ‘taqiyya’ now return mostly reputable explanations of the Islamic concepts. Taqiyya, which describes the circumstances under which a Muslim can conceal their belief in the face of persecution, is the sole term to feature a questionable website on the first page of results.”
“Reputable”: i.e., acceptable under the Sharia prohibition on criticism of Islam. “Questionable website”: i.e., one that tells hard truths about Islam and jihad.
So this has been going on for quite some time, as it is virtually certain that Google wasn’t skewering the results only about Islam and jihad in July 2017. Only now is it being discovered by the general public. President Trump is right to call the social media giants out. Let’s hope he can stop them before the make the First Amendment an entirely dead letter.
“Google staffers wanted to manipulate search results to combat Trump’s travel ban, emails show,” by Brian Flood, Fox News, September 21, 2018:
Google is in the spotlight after internal emails show conversations between employees highlighting a desire to manipulate search results on the heels of President Trump’s controversial travel ban in order to mute conservative viewpoints and push ways to combat the ban.
Like many Silicon Valley titans, Google has drawn the ire of conservatives who feel right-leaning views are condemned from within. But internal company emails made public by Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Thursday appear to show employees wanted to curate Google’s algorithm to boost left-leaning political views on immigration.
The emails were written on Jan. 29, 2017 — two days after Trump signed the initial travel order that resulted in protests across the country. The emails indicate that Google employees suggested ways to “leverage” the search engine to combat what the tech giant staffers considered anti-immigration rhetoric and news. The email chain, which was first obtained by “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and quickly matched by the Wall Street Journal, shows Google staffers admitting to colleagues that action must be taken immediately to rally against the travel ban.
“Overall idea: Leverage search to highlight important organizations to donate to, current news, etc. to keep people abreast of how they can help as well as the resources available for immigrations [sic] or people traveling,” an email sent by a marketing employee said.
“I know this would require a full on sprint to make happen, but I think this is the sort of super timely and imperative information that we need as we know that this country and Google, would not exist without immigration,” a product manager responded.
According to “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” responses from other Google employees included comments such as, “we’re absolutely in,” and “excellent initiative.” Other emails reveal an employee called the situation a “highly political issue,” while a separate email detailed a “large brainstorm” that was apparently taking place throughout the company.
The emails show Google staffers chatting about methods to alter the company’s algorithm to point users to pro-immigration organizations, lawmakers and agencies that fit the staffers’ political beliefs. Google didn’t deny the validity of the emails and provided the same response to both “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and the Wall Street Journal.
“These emails were just a brainstorm of ideas, none of which were ever implemented. Google has never manipulated its search results or modified any of its products to promote a particular political ideology — not in the current campaign season, not during the 2016 election, and not in the aftermath of President Trump’s executive order on immigration. Our processes and policies would not have allowed for any manipulation of search results to promote political ideologies,” a Google spokesperson said.
A Google insider echoed the company spokesperson and said the ideas mentioned in the emails weren’t even close to being put into action.
Media Research Center Vice President Dan Gainor told Fox News that the scandal would be more significant if there was evidence that the Google staffers had “actually taken action on this left-wing insanity,” but “it is scary that manipulating the search to push a liberal agenda was even discussed.”…
Trump’s initial travel ban temporarily stopped immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries. According to the email chain, Google staffers suggested actively countering “islamophobic, algorithmically biased results from search terms ‘Islam,’ ‘Muslim,’ ‘Iran,’ etc.” and countering ‘prejudiced, algorithmically biased search results” regarding the words “Mexico,” “Hispanic” and “Latino.”…

This country and Google would not exist without immigration? Immigration is simply moving from one land to another. So what if the immigrants had brought with them beliefs in totalitarianism? What would the country be like then? It’s not due to the act of immigration that the United States exists as the land of the free; it’s because the immigrants believed in freedom and wanted to leave behind a land where others told them what to think and what to do. A growing number of the new immigrants do not support that freedom and when their way of thinking becomes the viewpoint of the majority of voters in America, freedom in America will die and all will live under the oppression of mind control. Thinking the U.S. exists because of immigration is flawed thinking.
James Lincoln says
Absolutely correct, an immigrant needs to bring with them a mindset that is consistent with American values.
CogitoErgoSum says
The plaque on the Statue of Liberty speaks of those who yearn to be free; not about people who yearn to spread a religion of oppression. The early immigrants to the U.S. came to be free of any kind of oppression, to make it on their own and to be left alone, to have the type of religion they wanted or even no religion at all. These new immigrants want to be given free things and to be free to tell others how to live their lives. America was not established for people like that; it was established for us to live as we see fit. We need to honor those who risked everything to make it here with that dream of freedom in mind and insure that the dream remains alive. Helping flood the land with people who do not share the dream is to kill the dream.

True, CogitoErgoSum and James.

Well, I’m fired up tonight so here’s some more. I know some people were brought here to the U.S. unwillingly but we fought a terrible civil war because of it and suffered greatly to put an end to slavery so that all people in this country may live free. We also fought to integrate those who were once slaves into the fabric of our society and we are still fighting that battle. There were those who wanted to keep the old ways of division alive and those who fought for integration to make our society one that stood for equal justice and freedom for all (who shared the dream). This new emphasis on ‘diversity” is just another way to re-establish the old ways of segregation. Diversity, my eye …. segregation is the dream of the new immigrants calling for “diversity.” The KKK must be sorry they didn’t think that one up.
James Lincoln says
CogitoErgoSum,
Agree 100%!
Countries like UK, Sweden, etc., can say that they are “multicultural” by accepting large numbers of Muslim migrants, but they are rapidly losing their country in the process. A country can be “multiethnic” but should have one culture, i.e., a melting pot.
E pluribus Unum.

Of course they implemented it. It’s a lot easier to lie about it than to deal with the fallout of being found out.
Google’s mantra: “Do evil if we can get away with it.” So far, they’ve been pretty effective at getting away with it.

……………….
Just appalling.

It is hilarious to hear that “Google”, (the behive) whoever that is, believes they have complete control over all the search code when there are thousands of politically motivated code monkeys in the organization with the capability to alter it.
Page and Brin haven’t read 10% of the code, if any, being up to their ears, years ago; swamped by the requirements of managing a huge corporation that requires them to constantly personally communicate with other corporations, governments, and staff. Zuckerberg is in the same situation, the code generation bypassing the founder, years ago.
Think of Google as a beehive where the queen has no idea what is in the minds of the individual workers other than the expectation each will do its instinctive job – in Google’s case, its “politically correct” job.
Congress is so ignorant of the nature of software in the hands of a mob of generally, anarchist minds that have an axe to grind with society, that they believe they can actually regulate or control it. That horse left the barn, long ago.
When a “Google” spokesman declares that “Google” actually knows whether the search code discriminates against certain ideas or organizations, it is pure propaganda without firsthand knowledge.

Of course Google is monkeying with search results. I used to see the website “answering-Islam” on the first page of results whenever I was looking up a Qur’anic verse or other Islamic concept. I found it to be thorough and detailed. Now it never comes up; not on page one, not on page two, not on page three — now I have to type it in specifically if I want it.

I’ve noticed similar things. It is a lot more difficult to find Jihad Watch stories, as well–even when you have the exact title of the story. There were also stories I have been able to Google in the past that don’t come up at all now.

Google became synonymous with search by using backlinks which is pretty simple to replicate. The more they compromise their integrity, the easier it is for some other company to steal their thunder.

Most of these technology companies seem to be staffed by zealous Lefties who think nothing of distorting the truth or suppressing any “free speech” that offends them. It rather explains why Google can happily work with a totalitarian state like China. They have the same values.
Westman says
You’ve outlined exactly why Page, Brin, and Picchai don’t actually have full control of the software being written by their code monkeys – code monkeys who can implement their own biases.

Big Tech loves moslems because they traffic so many in under the H1-B visa system to take American jobs in their corporations.
Google wouldn’t exist without them? Likely true. Same goes for Microsoft and a plethora of other tech giants.
Techies working for these corporations are exposed only to the “moderate” moslems in their offices, who actually come here to work under our visa programs. It’s why they defend them so viciously. They haven’t a clue about islam itself. In their beady little eyes, all they see are peaceful, hard working moslems being “attacked” by islamophobic, bigoted, racist, xenophobic, fascist white supremacists who need their faces bashed in a la their “Bash a Fash” commandments.
