Whether or not it is wise for the US to be backing the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), this shows yet again that the old Cold War alliances have far outlived their usefulness, and the US needs to reconfigure its international relationships on the basis of the new realities of the global jihad. This has begun to happen with Erdogan’s Turkey, which is neither a friend nor an ally of the United States, but few recognize that fact yet.
“Turkey shells US-backed Kurdish militia positions in Syria: media,” AFP, October 28, 2018:
ISTANBUL (AFP) – Turkey’s military on Sunday fired artillery shells at a Kurdish militia in Syria that is backed by the United States but deemed a terrorist group by Ankara, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
The shells targeted “shelters” of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) east of the Euphrates River in the Kobane region of northern Syria, Anadolu said.
The strikes come a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted a summit in Istanbul on the Syrian conflict with the leaders of Russia, France and Germany, in which they adopted a joint statement committing to work “together in order to create conditions for peace and stability in Syria”….

It seems as if the US State Department is trying desperately to manage our relationship with Turkey, but Erdogan is out of control.
We have soldiers embedded with the Kurds, east of the Euphrates. If Erdogan invades, will US troops fight the Turks? I wonder how those US/Turkish ‘joint patrols’ in Manbij are working out?

Both Turkey and the US are illegally occupying Syrian territory supporting their respective terrorist proxies! They better leave Syria peacefully now or they will have to be forced out in the near future!

Why is turkey still an ally and in NATO they have been anti U S no a very long time
Is there still an air force base there ?
If so why ?
gravenimage says
Good question. Turkey is no ally of ours, and needs to be kicked out of NATO yesterday.

yup, there’s an airbase at incirlik, and it reportedly has nukes stored there. saudi arabia can buy nukes, but turkey can steal them! they may not be able to set them off as currently configured, but no doubt it wouldn’t take that much work to remove the machined explosive and fissile materials and put them into a turkish bomb.
the coming civil wars in eurabla will be the most interesting of times!

The US should arrange the creation of an autonomous Kurdistan within the Iraq federation and then move most of its NATO materiel to Kurdistan.
That way, Turkey will realize that if they don’t play ball with the US, that Kurdistan will be a more loyal ally.
The Kurds will become the staunchest US allies in existence if they US follows my advice.

I support the Kurds 100%. When I was in Iraq 2005 to 2006 the Kurds were the only ones who had a civil society where ALL had rights, at least by ME standards! There areas were the only ones where one felt that a normal people lived.

I suspect Erdogan’s plan is to occupy then calve up Iraq into a Turkish territory in the North and leave Iran with control of the South. That way he neutralizes the irritating Kurds.

b.a. freeman says
Theo, “whether or not it is wise” to support the YPG has much less to do with iran and the criminals running it than with turkey and its leading criminals. we *indeed* need to support the persian opposition, but it is also important to throw turkey out of NATO and pull our forces out of turkey – even if we lose a vantage point to watch russia, which isn’t worth the danger from being in bed with pious muslims.

I advisedly support the Kurds here–but it is still important for us not to forget they are also Muslims:

i see that the joint statement accidentally left out the word “islamic” between “for” and “peace.”
