The Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee argued in an article on Thursday that the gift boxes sent to children, many in Muslim countries, stem from an organization that holds anti-Muslim and anti-homosexual sentiments…The Guardian op-ed…took issue with the Bible stories and books dispatched alongside the children’s gifts, arguing that such a strategy targets Muslim families.
Christians can believe something is wrong without dehumanizing the individual. Sin is ubiquitous, but Christianity preaches love and acceptance. If Samaritan’s Purse was against Muslim families, the charity would not be giving to Muslim families. Polly Toynbee should be attacking the Islamic teachings that call for the murder of gays and apostates, and for those Muslims who actually act upon these teachings should be held to account. She should also be attacking the Islamic teachings that deem women to be inferiors, allow for child brides and the continuation of black slavery, and the like. Instead, this coward chooses an easy target: a loving, charitable organization that gives.
Samaritan’s Purse responded:
Our purpose is to show God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. We do this by distributing millions of shoebox gifts to children who are affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine to let them know that they are not forgotten…..No matter where we go, we don’t hide the fact that we are Christians.
“Samaritan’s Purse Responds to Accusation Operation Christmas Child Is ‘Anti-Muslim Proselytizing,'” by Stoyan Zaimov, Christian Post, November 10, 2018:
Samaritan’s Purse, the organization behind the Operation Christmas Child project, has responded to accusations that it’s anti-gay and anti-Muslim.
The Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee argued in an article on Thursday that the gift boxes sent to children, many in Muslim countries, stem from an organization that holds anti-Muslim and anti-homosexual sentiments.
Samaritan’s Purse, which is led by evangelist Franklin Graham, son of the late Billy Graham, responded to the op-ed in an email to The Christian Post on Friday, stating that Operation Christmas Child is “aimed specifically to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas — the birth of Jesus.”
“Our purpose is to show God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. We do this by distributing millions of shoebox gifts to children who are affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine to let them know that they are not forgotten,” the group said.
“No matter where we go, we don’t hide the fact that we are Christians. As our name illustrates, we are upfront about who we are,” it told CP.
“Shoebox gifts are given to children regardless of religious affiliation and with no strings attached. Our method is demonstrated in love and we hope that our acts of compassion are an example of our faith.”
The Guardian op-ed made several accusations against Samaritan’s Purse, positioning that it’s ran by “fundamentalist American evangelical Christian missionaries.”
It took issue with the Bible stories and books dispatched alongside the children’s gifts, arguing that such a strategy targets Muslim families.
Graham, who’s also CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, was further accused of being anti-gay for adhering to biblical teachings on marriage — that it’s is a union between one man and one woman. The op-ed also highlighted several of his Facebook posts opposing radical Islamic extremism as an example of perceived anti-Muslim sentiment.
Toynbee, then accused participants in the annual Operation Christmas Child shoebox project of participating in “anti-Muslim proselytizing.”…

One might ask oneself how he/she would view his/her child receiving a gift accompanied by muslim teachings — however welcome the gift itself might be.
I feel that the background of the organization sending it is irrelevant, for the most part, but the inclusion of the Islamic message may not be.
In anticipation of criticism for asking this question I want it perfectly clear that I am not suggesting that it would be improper to let it be known that the gift is from a Christian group.
b.a. freeman says
the muslims are under no obligation to accept the gift boxes; in fact, i’m fairly certain that the boxes are labeled as being from samaritan’s purse, and should the ulema of a s**thole nation so desire, they could simply take the boxes and throw them away, or better yet (from their vile perspective), relabel them as being from an islamic or leftist group, and replace the christian tracts with lying islamic and/or leftist propaganda. because they’re basically criminals, they are, like all criminals, essentially lazy at base, so it doesn’t happen.
the sad fact is that the ummah does not help others, not even when the “others” are also part of the ummah. to illustrate the morality of the poisonous cult of islam, one need only read about the latest ferry sinking in banladesh or pakistan or afghanistan or any other s**thole; invariably, most of the survivors will be men, and almost all of the dead will be women, children, and old people. the ummah doesn’t give a s**t about anybody, any more than ms-13 or the mafia do (although these non-muslim gangs probably care more about their own women and children than does the ummah, since they may occasionally have some exposure to judeo-christian ethics). the ummah is all about self-gratification at the expense of others, with the exception of spreading the cult using terror and war (the latter soon to come; mr. erdogan will see to that, i’m sure).
bottom line: as a born-again christian, i’m all for muslim liars handing out boxes with islamic scripture in them. unless it’s rich western groups like CAIR and its pious ilk handing out propaganda, it just won’t happen. and usually, CAIR et al. want to spend most of their money teaching muslims to be pious, rather than helping non-muslims in *ANY* significant fashion, so we don’t really have to worry about any da’wa or other propaganda getting handed out other than through the usual leftist channels.

It’s best to have a good understanding of the meaning of both words and terms. In this above article
A very good example is the phrase “attacking Islamic teaching” regarding what may be contained in Christian booklets that are distributed among Muslims The fact is any Christian literature printed in the genuine Christian spirit , the way God wants it to be printed, that might criticize Islamic doctrines is not intended to offend or upset but to enlighten and inform. This in keeping within the instruction of the Bible that Christians are to ,in love,, expose doctrinal errors , Ephesians 5:11. Second Timothy 3:16, for the benefit of the people reviving the message.
Concerning the phrase in part of the title of the above article which is “Anti-Muslim proselytizing ” A better and for accurate term would be “Sharing the Good News of the Christian Gospel with Muslims.”, First Corinthians 15:1-4. For the fact should be kept in mind that “Muslims are not Islam..”
Christian Bible messages to Muslims need to be given in the Christian spirit and mindset as of one of the early Christian apostle who wrote the Galanian Christians when they had fallen into doctrinal error For the Apostle wrote “”Am I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth ?” Galatians 4:16.
In addition to all this, for Muslims and Christians there is a Bible based Christian site which replies to the many different claims made by the many apologists for Islam .It’s answering-islam.org
somehistory says
If she criticized a moslim for sending their books and papers to others who are not moslim, she would be visited by the police, perhaps fined, perhaps jailed, etc. But she has freedom to speak against anyone attempting to tell a moslim about Christ.
Jesus Christ openly criticized those who fought against Him and the Truth He spoke. He called some “snakes, vipers, unwashed graves,” among other things. He asked them how they would “flee the Judgment of Gehenna.” He didn’t hold back, as the Truth means Life to those who listen.
One of His Apostles said that, “Christ left (you) a pattern to follow His steps closely.”
What is more, it is perfectly sane…and right…to point out to people the Truth when it is known that they believe a pack of lives that will mean only bad for them.
The Bible condemns homosexuality. True Christians agree with this, though not “condemning” individuals, not “judging” them as worthy of death. True Christians leave the Judging to Christ and His Father. But, tell the Truth they will.
The Bible also gives us enough information to know that islam is evil, straight from God’s enemy, the devil and True Christians are aware that we must speak the Truth about this evil. If that is heard by a moslim, and that moslim listens and leaves islam, a life can be saved. If a moslim hears and flies into a rage, claims a “phobia” on the part of the Christian, then the life of that one is still at great risk.
Like the Apostles Peter and John, Christians “cannot hold back from speaking the Truth.” Jesus said that “knowledge of God” and “Truth” means “everlasting life.” How can this be a bad thing…to try to reach more people with the “knowledge of God” and the “Truth”?
Only haters of Truth see it as a bad thing.

It’s pretty easy to see it as proselytizing children. We are very critical when muslims do it to our children so why wouldn’t the same rules apply here?
Because your religion is the “right” religion?
A touch hypocritical wouldn’t you say? Muslims believe their religion is the correct one.
Remember that 80% of the world is not Christian and that that 80% do not consider their children to be “fair game” for Christian proselytizing any more than you consider yours fair game for muslims to try to convert.
You can’t have it both ways. Trying to will certainly get a reaction.
somehistory says
Parents of *any* or *no* belief, are free to discard what they do not wish their children to have. If a moslim gave one of my children anything, and my children were still minors, I would be obligated to trash it.
If I knew the moslim intended to give my child something….whatever it may be…it would be refused.
There is no trying to “have it both ways” here. If the moslims don’t want their children to have the gifts, they can throw them away if the child is given the gifts while away from the parent.
This organization is not holding guns to the heads of the children and forcing them to accept the gifts. No Christian holds a knife or gun or bomb and threatens another with harm if gifts or Truth is not accepted.
Rarely says
Fair enough. They can always trash the Christian content or the whole package.
BUT, even though you could trash the entire package without your kids seeing it, wouldn’t you be critical that the attempt was made to hit on your kids? I know that I would but I wouldn’t make a federal case out of it.
somehistory says
We must protect our children from this evil scourge, but unless the moslim commits a crime, just telling them “no” should suffice.
If one actually tried to give a gift and the intended said, “no,” knowing how they behave, the intended recipient could expect a bad reaction. A “federal case” might be made by the moslim, claiming a “phobia.”
Christians are taught to behave in a far different manner than are moslims who are taught to be as offensive as possible so as to cause fear and terror. It’s what they know.
The photo shows Mr. Graham and the child looking at shoes. He’s teaching her Love, but not from something written.
Do moslims object to these kinds of gifts? Or is it just to things they consider an affront to islam…like literature about Someone they claim to honor…or medicine to help prevent disease…?
The woman writing the article has swallowed the moslim propaganda. moslims must not be told the Truth. They are too special to be made to realize others have good reason not to agree with their belief… they believe a lot of lies. And those lies make them do evil deeds.
Kay says
Rarely,

Graham answered the criticism by saying they try to make known the true meaning of Christmas.
To explain a meaning of a holiday is a pretty mild thing.
The outreach is directed at children but certainly with the expectation that the parents will also benefit–and in no way to turn children from their parents.

And if they approached your child to explain the meaning of Ramadan you wouldn’t find that objectionable?
Christians view of Christmas is fine but Christians can’t expect the rest of the world to fall into step and honour it. It’s a Christian event, not a muslim one.
LINDA CAROL JOHNSON says
Any religion that prescribes the indiscriminate killing of anyone who doesn’t agree with them can’t possibly be the “right one”. Islam is evil and coincidentally against the law in the U.S. although that law isn’t being enforced presently. It’s not a religion — it’s a death cult that has far reaching political ambitions.
Elisha says
Christianity is certainly the truth. The Bible is historically, prophetically and scientifically consistent. There is compelling evidence for the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. People like Simon Greenleaf, Sir William Ramsay, James Warner Wallace and Lee Strobel, as strident atheists, had the courage and humility to seek truth and became Christians. Go figure. Here’s some clues:
I, the Lord, SEARCH THE HEART, I TEST THE MIND, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. – Jeremiah 17:10
And you will seek Me and find Me, when you SEARCH FOR ME WITH ALL YOUR HEART. – Jeremiah 29:13
The Lord IS NEAR TO ALL who call upon Him, to all WHO CALL UPON HIM IN TRUTH. – Psalm 145:18
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God RESISTS THE PROUD,
But GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” – James 4:6
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But THE NATURAL MAN DOES NOT RECEIVE THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, BECAUSE THEY ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED. – 1 Corinthians 2:11-14
The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among THOSE WHO PERISH, because they DID NOT RECEIVE THE LOVE OF THE TRUTH, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth BUT HAD PLEASURE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. – 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. – Hosea 4:6

Your choice of violence is deliciously varied.
Were you as a woman to aim for holy martyrdom, I don’t know what provision is made for you on your arrival in heaven where men receive the gift of sex for all eternity with their virginal harem, plus endless feasting on jolly good food. Breaking News! Top sleuth Toynbee uncovers consignment of Christmas presents ready to be shipped to Albania. “Albania? That’s the clue – a mainly Muslim country, the kind of place where most of these shoeboxes are destined.” What were some of the other “mainly Muslim countries” where most of these shoeboxes were destined? Liberia, Uganda, Sudan, DR Congo, Angola, Tanzania, Kenya, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Russia (Eastern Siberia — plenty of unsuspecting Muslims to lead astray there), India, Pakistan (“[In] Pakistan, persecuted believers can now worship in four new churches built by Samaritan’s Purse. We also provided relief aid for Christians who were victims of attacks by religious extremists”1), Vietnam, Cambodia, Kosovo, Bosnia, Serbia, Romania, Armenia, Macedonia, Albania, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and the United States. Guardian super-sleuths are yet to uncover “gift-wrapped Hindophobia”, “gift-wrapped Buddhistophobia”, “gift-wrapped animistophobia,” and “gift-wrapped atheistophobia,” but rest assured, they’re on the case.
Polly Toynbee’s headline reads: “The Samaritan’s Purse charity sends gift boxes to children in Muslim countries. They contain a pernicious, hidden agenda.” Well, they send those boxes to over 100 countries, most of which are in fact not Muslim, and the agenda, far from hidden, is openly declared. What is more, it is the same agenda, regardless of which country the shoebox goes to. It is proselytising *for* Christianity, not *anti-*anything. Muslims have difficulty with the concept of something not being about them in particular. Cartoonists, for example, mock all religions. In the Muslim’s mind, cartoonists set out specifically to mock Islam. Now, of course, they do, Muslims having given them reason to do so.
No matter, the dhimmi dogs will attack on cue, as did Toynbee’s source for the “giftwrapped Islamophobia” motif, Giles Fraser, in an article, The Evangelicals who like to Giftwrap Islamophobia, (The Guardian, 10 November 2003). Why was this particular attack on Samaritan’s Purse significant? Because in 2003, that aid agency was drilling wells, providing safe drinking water and curing the sick in Eastern Sudan (work gratefully received by the Sudanese government). At the same time, the Sudanese Arab Muslim government and its allied Muslim militia were carrying out racial genocide against the black African Muslims in Darfur in Western Sudan (including mass rapes, of course). The image of Muslims as nice peaceful people, morally superior to white colonialists, took a bad hit. The “Islamophobia” spell looked shaky and needed a boost, so guess what? Attack the only people who were not part of the orgy of Muslim-on-Muslim, Arab-on-black slaughter: the aid agencies working in Sudan, et voila! “Giftwrapped Islamophobia.” Six years later, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was indicted for genocide, crimes against humanity and murder, and naturally, the Arab League announced solidarity with him. The umma always comes first. Dhimmi journalists just don’t know that yet.
But Toynbee’s concern about charities with hidden religious agendas must be taken at face value. We’ve only seen one case and she should be given the chance to prove what she’s really made of. I would like to recommend to Toynbee that she direct her considerable investigative skills to zakat. Unless I’m wrong, I believe she will find:
“The alms (zakat) are only to be given to the poor, to the needy, to those employed in collecting (zakat), to those whose hearts are to be won (over to Islam), in the cause of freeing slaves and those encumbered with debt, in fighting in the way of Allah and to the traveller. This is an obligation prescribed by Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise,” Qur’an 9:60.
This is Islamic charity, zakat, alms, one of the five pillars of Islam and there’s no getting around it. One of the permitted things such money is to be spent on is those whose hearts are to be won over to Islam, yes, proselytising. Exactly. But that’s where the similarity ends, for this gift-giving is in an altogether different league to cutesy little Operation Christmas Child that Toynbee is so exercised to warm parents about. This charity bankrolls terrorism and all other forms of jihad, all forms of “fighting in the way of Allah,” and finally, it can be lavished on the needy traveller, especially if said traveller is off to fight in the way of Allah. Two categories with one disbursement, masha-Allah! Did anyone ever wonder how it was that no sooner had ISIS declared a caliphate than 30,000 ordinary Muslims somehow managed to converge on Syria from all over the world in double-quick time?
Just one more thing: while the eight categories of zakat are the only permitted categories, it does not mean that a zakat collection must necessarily be spent on all of them. It is permitted to drop categories. However, it is not permitted to drop jihad. So if an entire zakat collection is to be spent on just one category, that category must be jihad. If you want some seriously dodgy gift-giving to investigate Toynbee, there’s one right here. It’s called zakat. Just be careful no one accuses you of Islamophobia.
