Just imagine the New York Times publishing an article entitled “What a Christian Could Teach Supporters of the Saudi Crown Prince About Muhammad,” or “What a Christian Could Teach Supporters of the Ayatollah Khamenei About Islam.” This is not to compare Trump either to the Saudi Crown Prince or the Iranian Supreme Leader, although many Leftists are so deranged regarding Trump that they would endorse such comparisons with relish. The point I’m making, on the other hand, is that the New York Times editors would rather have their teeth pulled out with rusty pliers than ever to publish an article by a Christian telling Muslims what they should think about anything, but they don’t hesitate to publish this self-righteous and disingenuous propaganda by Wajahat Ali lecturing Christians and trying to shame them out from supporting Trump.
Ali doesn’t know as much about Christianity as he wants you to think he does; for example, he claims that he read the King James Bible while at Bellarmine High School in San Jose, California. Maybe he read it on his own, but apparently graduated from high school in or around 1998. Few, if any, Catholic schools ever used the King James Bible, which was a Protestant translation first published in 1611 and rejected by the Catholic Church. Because of its archaic language, it was widely discarded in the mid-twentieth century. The idea that a Catholic school was using it in the 1990s is ludicrous. If he read the Bible at school, Ali almost certainly read the translation known as the New American Bible, and if he read the King James Version on his own, it’s unlikely he understood much of it, unless he had mastered Shakespearean English by the time he attended high school.
Even less plausibly, Ali claims that “at the monthly Masses that were part of the curriculum, that meant grape juice and stale wafers were offered to pimpled, dorky teenagers as the blood and body of Christ.” No Catholic school in the 1990s anywhere would have used grape juice for communion. Ali’s attempts to provide atmospheric verisimilitude to buttress his arrogant lecturing of Christians slips on the comic banana peel of his ignorance.
More importantly, Ali in this article continuously confuses socialism and state control with Christian charity, as if having the government confiscate citizens’ wealth and redistribute it to those it sees fit is the only way Christians can love their neighbor today. He also tells his Times-reading marks that Jesus would want open borders, with no apparent regard for the Christian obligation to love one’s neighbor at home — is inundating a country with migrants who will raise the crime rate and saturate the welfare rolls really charitable to those who must suffer as a result of this inundation?
The arrogance of it all is what is overriding. Bringing in a cynical and deceptive Muslim who endeavors to shame Christians by claiming they’re bad Christians for rejecting a globalist, socialist agenda — that epitomizes the New York Times today.
“What a Muslim Could Teach Trump Supporters About Jesus,” by Wajahat Ali, New York Times, December 22, 2018 (thanks to Vikram):
At Bellarmine, an all-boys Catholic school in San Jose, Calif., I was often the token Muslim and probably the only person who began freshman year thinking the Eucharist sounded like the name of a comic book villain. I eventually learned it’s a ritual commemorating the Last Supper. At the monthly Masses that were part of the curriculum, that meant grape juice and stale wafers were offered to pimpled, dorky teenagers as the blood and body of Christ.
During my time there, I also read the King James Bible and stories about Jesus, learned about Christian morality, debated the Trinity with Jesuit priests and received an A every semester in religious studies class. Twenty years later, I can still recite the “Our Father” prayer from memory.
Growing up, I’d been taught that Jesus was a major prophet in Islam, known as “Isa” and also referred to as “ruh Allah,” the spirit of God born to the Virgin Mary and sent as a mercy to all people. Like Christians, we Muslims believe he will return to fight Dajjal, or the Antichrist, and establish peace and justice on earth. But it was everything I learned in high school that came together to make me love Jesus in a way that made me a better Muslim.
Even though I don’t personally celebrate Christmas, the season always makes me think of his legacy of radical love. This year, it’s especially hard to understand how Trump-supporting Christians have turned their back on that unconditional love and exchanged it for nativism, fear and fealty to a reality TV show host turned president.
According to a Washington Post/ABC poll conducted in January, 75 percent of white evangelicals in the United States — compared with 46 percent of American adults over all — said “the federal crackdown on undocumented immigrants” was a positive thing. Sixty-eight percent of them believe America has no responsibility to house refugees, according to a Pew Research poll conducted in April and May.
The numbers aren’t quite as jarring when we look at different slices of religious America. According to a PRRI poll conducted in late August and early September, 59 percent of Catholics and 75 percent of black Protestants view Trump negatively. Still, I can’t fathom how anyone who knows the Jesus I encountered at Bellarmine could be comfortable with this administration.
Jesus was a humble carpenter from Nazareth who miraculously fed 5,000 people but never humiliated them with condescending lectures about God favoring those who pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Mr. Trump has expressed enthusiasm for gutting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the nation’s most important anti-hunger program, by adding unnecessary and cruel work requirements for food stamp recipients.
Mr. Trump also chose Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon who admitted he isn’t qualified to run a federal agency, to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Dr. Carson, who says his Christian faith helps him “serve the nation even better,” tweeted he’s “moving more people toward self-sufficiency” by advocating huge cuts to housing aid, increased rent and more stringent work requirements. In high school, I must have missed the sermon where Jesus told the poor, hungry and homeless to stop asking God for handouts.
President Trump and Republicans have also waged a nonstop war on Obamacare for nine years, allowing 14 states to opt out of Medicaid expansion, leaving four million eligible Americans unable to enroll. The Jesus I met in high school healed a blind man. Guess what he didn’t do? Rail against the socialist evils of taking care of people’s health.
The Jesus I know commanded, “You shall love your neighbors as yourself.” He didn’t add “unless they are undocumented immigrants or Muslim or gay.” He would welcome refugees from Central America, feed them, wash their feet. He would have been horrified at the conditions that led 7-year-old Jakelin Caal to die of dehydration and shock in Border Control custody after seeking refuge in this country with her father.
Christianity isn’t unique: Every religion is abused as such by some of its followers and manipulated to advance political agendas. But the hypocrisy of white Evangelical Christians’ support for Trump in light of his undeniable cruelty and apathy — toward refugees, Puerto Rican citizens recovering from a devastating hurricane, victims of California fires and a newspaper columnist killed by Saudi Arabia — is too much to bear. Despite this barrage of hate, Evangelical leaders like Franklin Graham still support Mr. Trump because they believe he “defends the faith.” How?…

Yes, Guy, what SHARIA LAW TEXT IS THIS LIAR READING ??? Certainly, he is not reading the following AUTHORITATIVE SHARIA PUNISHEMENTS OF GAYS …
What Sharia law says about punishing homosexuals: flogging, stoning, thrown from high place, wall pushed over to crush, burning to death
Homosexuality is not only a sin, but a crime under Islamic law.
– Islam Question and Answer says: “The crime of homosexuality is one of the greatest of crimes, the worst of sins and the most abhorrent of deeds, and Allaah punished those who did it in a way that He did not punish other nations. It is indicative of violation of the fitrah, total misguidance, weak intellect and lack of religious commitment, and it is a sign of doom and deprivation of the mercy of Allaah.”
– In the Hanafi school of thought, the homosexual is first punished through harsh beating, and if he/she repeats the act, the death penalty is to be applied.
– In the Shafi`i school of thought, the homosexual receives the same punishment as adultery (if he/she is married) or fornication (if not married). This means, that if the homosexual is married, he/she is stoned to death, while if single, he/she is whipped 100 times. Hence, the Shafi`i compares the punishment applied in the case of homosexuality with that of adultery and fornication.
– In the Hanafi school, the two acts are differentiated, because anal sex [something that is prohibited, regardless of orientation] may also be involved, while in adultery [and fornication], the penis/vagina (which are reproductive parts) are involved.
– Some scholars hold the opinion that homosexuals should be thrown from a high building or stoned to death as a punishment for their crime, but other scholars maintain that they should be imprisoned until death occurs through starvation.
-Some of them (Islamic jurists) said that he should be punished in the same way as an adulterer, so he should be stoned if he is married and flogged if he is not married.
-Another view is that between two males, the active partner is to be lashed a hundred times if he is unmarried, and killed if he is married; whereas the passive partner is to be killed regardless of his marital status.
-Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas said: The highest point in the town should be found and the homosexual should be thrown head first from it, then stones should be thrown at him.
Ibn ‘Abbaas derived this hadd punishment from the punishment that Allaah sent upon the homosexuals of the people of Loot.
– It is narrated from Khaalid ibn al-Waleed that he found a man among one of the Arab tribes with whom men would have intercourse as with a woman. He wrote to Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq (may Allaah be pleased with him) and Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq consulted the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them). ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib had the strongest opinion of all of them, and he said: “No one did that but one of the nations, and you know what Allaah did to them. I think that he should be burned with fire.” So Abu Bakr wrote to Khaalid and he had him burned.

What’s worse than an Imam in full Islamic gear is a well-groomed Muslim who looks Western.
These well-groomed are twice as dishonest and ten times as sanctimonious. They use the guiding principles of their host country to promote their mediocre and intolerant religion, and if you heard them speak and observed their body language, you’d think they were true fighters and resisters.
Actually, they have an identity crisis which they resolve by “sweetening” their Islam (just as the Ottomans did in the past) to make it look charming and mysterious, not to mention ethical and gracious. It’s a seduction game.
But believe me, when the going gets tough, and France/UK/Sweden/Germany have a jihad on their hands – one that they’re not prepared for – these well-groomed Westernized Muslims, who are paragons of a European Islam, will side with the jihadis, and talk down about the jihadis in flattering and condescending ways to anxious policy makers and ivory tower leftists. Never trust a Muslim.
Frank Riley says
Well said! The extent of their humanity can be measured almost by the amount of Islam they reject. Without contact with Christianised society how much more different would they be? From its conception Islam has been a crafted and fearsome parody of Christianity. Alas, Christianity, itself, is now in a greatly weakened state with a diminishing influence in society, so, in that respect, things aren’t looking good.

Jesus could have fed with a few fishes and loaves of bread not just 5,000 but every person on Earth. But Jesus knew that man did not live by bread alone and He fold those who came to Him looking for a free meal to accept also His body to eat and His blood to drink. Those who could not stomach that walked away and Jesus let them go. Some things to Jesus are more important than food and drink for the body. Nourishment for the soul is what matters most to Him. So yes, there is at least one time that Jesus asked people to stop asking for handouts and when He did most of the people walked away from Him thinking he was insane.

What I don’t understand is: many of the same Muslims who hate homosexuals (that is, consenting adult homosexuals) and want to kill them, is that these same Muslims often believe that there is nothing wrong with Muslim men who rape non-Muslim women and girls, or who sodomize young boys (Muslim or non-Muslim).
While the story of Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah does indeed condemn homosexuality as a sin, it even more strongly condemns rape, as the men of Sodom sought to rape the male angels whom Lot had as guests in that city. Why doesn’t the Qu’ran mention that? Also, note, the angels’ religion didn’t matter, they were foreign (really, celestial) guests, and the men of Sodom didn’t care about their background.
It’s true that Lot also sinned by offering his 2 daughters to those rapist men to test their reaction, and also by getting drunk and committing incest several days later. However, this doesn’t change the fact that the story asserts that rape was one of the major sins for which God destroyed those two cities (Sodom and Gomorrah). Yet, many anti-gay Muslims seem to think that there is nothing wrong with that sin, and even that it is sanctified. Go figure….

WAJAHAT ALI writes about Christ’s “legacy of radical love” and feels no cognitive dissonance in endorsing it, but in so doing, Ali has REJECTED ISLAM.
Islam teaches RADICAL HATRED directed against Jews, Christians, polytheists and atheists ‘FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH’.
ALLAH DOES NOT LOVE THE KAFIR! So Muslims should not practice ‘RADICAL LOVE’ towards the kafir OR ANY SORT OF LOVE AT ALL !!!
WAHAJAT ALI KNOWS THAT, but he LIES about it.
Hatred for the sake of Allah and love for the sake of Allah is called Al Walaa wal Baraa, a fundamental principle of Islamic ethics and Sharia. A Muslim is to hate what Allah hates and love what Allah loves. Allah hates the Kafir, therefore, a Muslim is to act accordingly.
40:35 They [Kafirs] who dispute the signs [Koran verses] of Allah without authority having reached them are greatly hated by Allah and the believers [Muslims]. So Allah seals up every arrogant, disdainful heart.
h8.24 It is not permissible to give zakat [charity] to a Kafir, or to someone whom one is obliged to support such as a wife or family member.
Here are a few of the Koran references: A Kafir can be mocked–
83:34 On that day the faithful will mock the Kafirs, while they sit on bridal couches and watch them. Should not the Kafirs be paid back for what they did?
A Kafir can be beheaded—
47:4 When you encounter the Kafirs on the battlefield, cut off their heads until you have thoroughly defeated them and then take the prisoners and tie them up firmly.
A Kafir can be plotted against—
86:15 They plot and scheme against you [Mohammed], and I plot and scheme against them. Therefore, deal calmly with the Kafirs and leave them alone for a while.
A Kafir can be terrorized—
8:12 Then your Lord spoke to His angels and said, “I will be with you. Give strength to the believers. I will send terror into the Kafirs’ hearts, cut off their heads and even the tips of their fingers!”
A Muslim is not the friend of a Kafir—
3:28 Believers should not take Kafirs as friends in preference to other believers. Those who do this will have none of Allah’s protection and will only have themselves as guards. Allah warns you to fear Him for all will return to Him.
A Kafir is evil—
23:97 And say: Oh my Lord! I seek refuge with You from the suggestions of the evil ones [Kafirs]. And I seek refuge with you, my Lord, from their presence.
THAT’S WHY MUSLIMS ATTACK CHRISTIANS ON CHRISTMAS AND EASTER … because PRACTICIING, DEVOUT MUSLIMS MUST HATE THE KAFIR.

Should you also love your neighbor if the person only desire to rob you of subsistence, culture, land and probably despises you ?
The famed sentence “You shall love your neighbors as yourself.” also applies in reverse. If your neighbor loves you as himself, he should abstain from robbing you of subsistence, culture and land.
Thus everybody must love each other by respecting the integrity, property, culture and land of everybody else.
You don’t need any special commands to obey the obligation to relieve immediate physical harm.
No one-sided restrictions on the universal “neighbor love” command is claimed anywhere.
The undocumented migrants, straight or gay muslims, do NOT love their Christian neighbors as long as the invading muslims transfer their physical bodies uninvited to Christian lands. Their objective surely is to occupy, dominate and control the invaded Christian land.

Nor does it spiritually-equip him (or any other lost person) to accurately expound upon the Scriptures, the history of Christianity, Christian doctrine nor the numerous facets of Orthodox Christianity.
This guy is a Muslim! That fact, alone, disqualifies him from making valid claims regarding the truth of Scripture.
‘Satan (the god of this evil age) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so they cannot see the light o the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.’ 2 Corinthians 4: 4
It is crystal clear (to me at least) that the Jesus he claims to have met at Catholic school (but still does not know nor follow) is, in so many ways, not the Jesus of the Scriptures (who he clearly does not understand-nor can he because he is spiritually-dead, blind and lost in his sins. 1 Corinthians 1: 14, 2 Corinthians 11: 4, Galatians 1: 8-10
So when he attempts (in vain) to lecture Christians, conservatives and Trump-followers- coupling false notions regarding contemporary politics with false notions regarding the truth of Scripture-he exposes himself as someone who ‘thinks more highly of himself than he ought to think.’ Romans 12: 3
Therefore he misses the mark on all accounts. So does (as usual) the New York Times.

C’mon, guys, give Ali and his editors a break. It is clear, apart from Ali thinking he read the King James version at a Catholic school (perhaps it was the Douai-Rheims version?), that Ali has little understanding of what he read–and his editors may possibly have had even less. What you have here is a mere recycling of the liberal social gospel taught and halfheartedly believed in the former “mainstream” Protestant denominations during the 20th century.
The story of Jesus’ love and his association with the outcasts of society is an attractive one. But, if you actually read the Bible, you see that the Lord’s purpose was to “give his life a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45). Of this, Ali and his editors exhibit no knowledge at all. As for homosexuality, our Christian disapproval is of a piece with our disapproval of murder, theft, malice, gossip, and a host of other sins: the Word of God declares it to be sin–hence among the reasons why God had to become man, live among us, and offer his sinless life in atonement.
Nor do Ali and his editors seem to get it that the point of the New Testament is how God himself has actually broken into our sinful, fallen world, not merely spoken to someone. That’s also the point of the virgin birth of Christ: we have a new beginning for humanity in the God-Man Jesus Christ, who is both fully God and fully man, and so continues as such forever. God shares himself with us; he does not merely scold us.
In many ways, I’m a little sympathetic with Ali and his editors. Yes, there’s plenty to criticize about Trump and his associates (but please don’t get me started on the Clintons and the O)–as with any of us. But then I see the demand we need to accept homosexual behavior (as opposed to the person), and I sense that Ali and his editors trying to wax “prophetic” (as the theological liberals of the mid-20th century would put it) seems to end up with the wannabe “prophets” exalting the idols of the moment.
It is really a crying shame that the editors of America’s newspaper of record are so ignorant of the basics of the book that has shaped our world so much. Maybe, as an antidote, all of us here ought to make it a point to carefully read the Bible (all of it, including Habakkuk, Leviticus, and the Epistle of Jude) itself.

I wonder what Wajahat Ali thinks about Qur’an 9.30 that says that those who believe in the divinity of Christ as the Son of God are accursed?

Perhaps, in a display of interfaith solidarity, the Times would see fit to publish an essay by a Hindu, Jew, Christian, Jain, Buddhist or Sikh, lecturing Muslims — “What a [Hindu/Jew/Christian/Jain/Buddhist/Sikh] could teach “Beto” O’Rourke/Elizabeth Warren/Kamala Harris/Bernard Sanders supporters about Mohammed?”
Namely, that he was a sadistic, rapacious, bloodthirsty, self-serving and opportunistic warlord who co-opted two of the great pre-existing monotheistic faiths, Judaism and Christianity, and, arrogantly and blasphemously anointed himself a “prophet” in their traditions, but, supplanting their benevolent and tolerant teachings with a new, supremacist, totalitarian and hate-filled doctrine of goose-stepping fascism?

Dabbling in a crash course of sorts about Islamic “end times” and the role of Jesus the sequence seems to be the appearance of a Satanic Dajjal who is then defeated by Jesus and his cohorts; Jesus then conveniently disappears into some netherworld and muslims are left to bicker and finally prevail and hold center stage – try 7:30 to end of The Apocalyspe: Crash Course World Mythology #23 (sic)

Watching this led to curiosity re the Dajjal and finding rather concocted and “conflated” comments from this site:
https://www.answering-christianity.com/que5.htm
The paragraph beginning “Now without being biased, we Muslims have a story that makes a lot more sense and is empty of contradictions! We believe…”
From that point on we learn of bad Zionists and Christian Trinitarians who support A PRETEND JESUS NAMED DAJJAL. As opposed to this are supposedly SOME good Jews and good Christians who support the REAL JESUS IN HIS FIGHT AGAINST THE DAJJAL. The “real” Jesus wins and then (conveniently) gets lost. The muslims are left to fight further (of course) and they end up being the only ones in the spotlight on center stage as the “play” ends. Surprise, surprise!

I’m of the mind that the Muslim view of Jesus and the Apocalypse comes from a garbled hearing of II Thessalonians 2 being read aloud. Indeed, I think that for many Christians, the apocalyptic portions of the Thessalonian Epistles are the main source for their eschatology.
BTW, as a Christian, I am in no wise belittling or dismissing the Thessalonian Epistles! They are not the only portion of the Bible (or its derivative folklore) that the Muslims have garbled.

I wonder what his comments would be on the ‘Infancy Gospel of Thomas’, a known 2nd century forgery, circulating in Arabia at the time of Mohammed. It contains some of the revelations Gabriel gave to Mohammed to put in the Koran……???

Great question. I’ve read some of the “New Testament apocrypha” (for lack of a better term) such as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas and Protevangelium of James, and see how they worked their way into the overly fervid imagination of Muhammad ibn Abdallah.

The way to deal with the people who read the Times is as follows, because I do it:
Walk up to their homes where they have the “Hate has no home here,” sign or the “Refugees welcome sign,” and yell until you get their attention. It’s fun, and the First Amendment protects you. When you have their attention, let them know that the refugees are down a the border. They can go get some to shelter and also ask them if their Black neighbors feel the same way they do. Invariably, they’ll look scared because you’ll never see these signs anywhere where Blacks live. The people who read the Times and put up these signs live in segregated hoods where they can feel great about themselves. They’d just as soon have a refugee live with them as they’d live near a Black person.
As far as hate having no home, they really hate Trump voters
