The CBC’s Shanifa Nasser, her bio tells us, “holds a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies,” and here she is doing her best to transform a feel-good story about a teenage girl rescued from danger into something ugly and suspicious, from which the “far-right,” those ever-present bogeymen, will benefit.
“What happens the next time a teenage girl or adult woman from Saudi Arabia flees her family and declares herself to no longer be a Muslim, does that mean automatic sanctuary?”
Well, why not?
“In Saudi Arabia, leaving Islam is treated as a crime punishable by death.”
Nasser, despite her Master’s degree in Islamic Studies, neglects to inform us that the death penalty for apostasy is not just Saudi law, but Islamic law. The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law. It’s based on the Qur’an: “They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.” (Qur’an 4:89)
A hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
This is still the position of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunni and Shi’ite. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-‘ashriyyah, Al-Ja’fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”
Qaradawi also once famously said: “If they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment, Islam wouldn’t exist today.”
“Who benefits from rescuing Rahaf? Questions linger after whirlwind story of Saudi teen’s asylum, by Shanifa Nasser, CBC News, January 14, 2019:
It was a whirlwind affair that began with a Saudi teen barricaded in a Thai hotel room bravely defying the laws of her country and against long odds, refusing to return to her allegedly abusive family.
Just days later, Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun was on Canadian soil flanked by smiling officials and local service providers amid the flash of cameras — a swift resolution to a story that could have had a very different ending….
Now, as Qunun begins a new life in a new country, questions are being raised about the reasons for Canada’s speedy decision to grant her asylum, the message it sends and its implications for the future of the country’s already-frosty relationship with Saudi Arabia, where an estimated 17,000 Canadians currently live.
“Canada and Saudi Arabia are in a political battle currently, so because this woman is Saudi, my sense is that there was some political motive in promoting the ‘rescuing’ of a Saudi girl,” said Ryerson University professor Mehrunnisa Ali.
“Of course, the rescuing of oppressed people is a Western narrative in many different ways, but the securing of a Saudi woman being oppressed by her family and her country sharpens this narrative in ways that may not have been possible otherwise.”…
Thai immigration police Chief Surachate Hakparn told The Associated Press Qunun’s father denies physically abusing her or trying to force her into an arranged marriage, which were among the reasons she gave for wanting asylum….
So why was it that Qunun’s case was processed so speedily?…
But at least one former diplomat said Canada’s privileging of Qunun’s case could set a “dangerous precedent.”
“The Australians were prepared, as I understand it, to accept her as a refugee claimant. What we did is go one step further and accept her not as a claimant but as a refugee. And that’s a process that in Canada typically requires an assessment of the claim, a vetting of the individual and a decision that typically can take as much as two years,” said David Chatterson, Canada’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2009-2011.
“What happens the next time a teenage girl or adult woman from Saudi Arabia flees her family and declares herself to no longer be a Muslim, does that mean automatic sanctuary?” In Saudi Arabia, leaving Islam is treated as a crime punishable by death.
Asked on Sunday about how and why Qunun’s claim was processed so quickly, Global Affairs Canada was tight-lipped.
“When the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) made a request of us that we grant Ms. Rahaf al-Qunun asylum, we accepted. Out of concern for her safety, we ask that her privacy be respected,” said spokesperson Stefano Maron.
‘A prop for our disputes’
For some, including senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue Amarnath Amarasingam, it’s concerning how Qunun’s case is being celebrated by figures that often push an anti-Islam or anti-immigration message.
“Many on the far-right love ex-Muslims, and many ex-Muslims on the far-right often present themselves as so-called native informants presenting to the mainstream the real ‘truth’ about Muslims,” he said.
“It’s perhaps not surprising that many of these individuals on the far-right encouraged Canada to accept Rahaf after it was rumoured that she had abandoned Islam. To be clear, I’m very happy that Canada let her in but … I’m going to go out on a limb and say there are some ulterior motives there.”
Dennis Horak, who served as Canada’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia until he was expelled from the country last year, said the next few days could make a big impact on diplomatic relations between Canada and the kingdom.
“I would hate to see us use this to keep trotting her out and have meetings with the Prime Minister … various photo-ops things like that [and] that become the mallet with which we bash Saudi Arabia,” he said….
Meanwhile Ali, who was herself involved in sponsoring two Syrian refugee families — of which one case took almost two years to process — remains concerned with the message she said this high-profile case sends, including that winning public attention could make a claim more likely to proceed than another.
“That’s the biggest risk of power being exercised in a way that prioritizes some refugees versus others,” she said.
“The message that we may be giving is that rather than go through the system, reach a powerful person.”
Geoffrey de Brito says
Those who practice deceit will always seek to portray truth as false. The Left is desperate to prevent the Western public from learning of what Islam’s ‘truth’ consists.
The Left’s ploy is made futile by Islam’s tenets, it’s supporter’s actions and the inaction of its ‘moderates’ in the face of Islam’s terrorism and antipathy toward liberty.
b.a. freeman says
sadly, Geoffrey, the left’s ploy is *NOT* made futile by the tenets of islam, because almost *NOBODY* of *ANY* political persuasion has bothered looking at islam. and why would that be? perhaps the takeover of education by hard-core leftists – *decades* ago – might have something to do with that.
the truth will indeed set U free, but only if U bother to *LOOK AT IT*. we have been indoctrinated to be sheep.

Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun really is not a poster girl for Islam, that has to be a concern for the Liberal Party and their Islamists….The Liberal narrative of the most benevolent most merciful ideology is being sullied …..& that’s blasphemous…..
Ms. al-Qunun, who has renounced Islam, is concerned about her safety in light of continued online threats, including from family members, said Yasmine Mohammed, a human-rights activist living in British Columbia. Ms. Yasmine Mohammed, helps individuals who have left Islam.
……. an ‘APOSTATE’ …. hush now…. HUSH…..
The Liberal media are burying this bit of Islamic sacrilege ! They can’t be seen to be complicit in enabling a Muslim teenager to leave her faith …..
That’s blasphemous { & it doesn’t jive with the Liberal’s M-103 blasphemy edits} and could cause quite a bit of Liberal grief…. we do have our fair share of Islamist fundamentalist fanatics in this country ….
It’s little wonder the Libera media and their islamists are sweeping Ms. al-Qunun’s apostasy under the proverbial prayer rug …

The pope and the Lutheran bishops would never hound a Christian apostate to death: This exercise was disposed of a couple of hundred years ago. That a single young muslim girl leaves a bestial religion, is only natural.
Any religion which sanctions murder of apostates, should be forbidden in any morally sane country.
Apparently there will be no sane countries in the world, until the foul religion is legally forbidden by politicians. Politicians who dare demand removal of the brutal sharia law, as a precondtion for islam to be allowed in any civilized Christian country.
Jayme says
The left in Canada has said in the past Sharia Law should be allowed in Canada as in there view its protected under freedom of religion.

This muslim is another misleading figure of the fake news tv channel. I am tired of these liars and people who are trying to hide the real face of islam. And there are many morons who watch all day long the fake news, as CNN, CBS, NBC and PBS which still gets millions in grant form our government.

Wow, “Master’s degree in Islamic Studies”. This is exactly the same as BS Studies. This chick Shanifa N should NOT be @CBC in ANY capacity. And actually nowhere near a microphone.
Carrying water for Islam in an already socialist/politically correct media environment like Canada’s = NOT GOOD! 🙁
David M says
What’s the final exam before getting your Masters degree in Islamic studies anyway? Participate in a FGM procedure? Cut off the hand of a thief as per Sharia law? Whip someone several hundred times for adultery? Kill an apostate? Kill an infidel?

No–just spout a lot of Taqiyya at some Western university.
James Lincoln says
The CBC’s Shanifa Nasser apparently “holds a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies.”
That credential would give anyone holding it a certain amount of credibility with the general public.
Individuals who are highly informed regarding Islam can do one of two things:
1. They can tell the truth about Islam, like Robert Spencer, etc.
2. They can expertly lie about Islam. They can align with the left, whitewash Islam, and use deceit, etc., to further their cause.
Apparently Shanifa Nasser has chosen choice number two.
No Muzzies Here says
Who benefits? The girl benefits, by staying alive.
What a religion! It’s so horrible that most would leave except that they will be murdered if they do!
Like the Berlin wall. Communism was so horrible that many tried to leave it, knowing knowing they might get shot and killed for trying to leave it.
gravenimage says
*Exactly*, No Muzzies Here.
And here’s a question for everyone here–if you thought that the far Left might gain political points if a young girl’s life was saved, would you prefer that she was murdered?
Any decent person, of course, would much rather that she was saved–and then either grit their teeth at the Left taking credit for it, or take efforts to try to set the record straight–but they *would not* prefer the girl was murdered, whatever the political fallout.
But that is not the stance that the CBC is taking. *Despicable*.
tim gallagher says
I agree, gravenimage. There’s what humane, decent people would be happy to see happen, even if the lefties take some credit and then there’s the despicable (as you put it) and cynical attitude of striking poses and making cynical political points on issues like the Saudi woman, which this CBC “commentator” seems to be indulging in. Such people don’t seem to really care about the individual person involved ( in this case, Rahaf) but only about pushing their agenda. I think pretty well all the nasty “far right” people are really glad that Rahaf’s life was saved, no matter how it was achieved. I agree with your comments, No Muzzies Here and Peggy. Now, if only someone could get Asia Bibi and her husband out of that hell hole, Pakistan.

First off, we don’t need someone named “Shanifa Nasser” telling us what to think about ANYTHING. Second, just the fact her name is “Shanifa Nasser” means she knows pretty much what Spencer is explaining there, no need for a Western college degree. She’s a freaking Muslim for freak’s sake.
eduardo odraude says
The articles at points refers to ex-Muslims and their allies as “far-right.” Talking about turning the truth on its head. Muslims in vast numbers adhere to a far-right program of theocracy. Ex-Muslims want to live with freedom of religion and freedom of speech, and they are far-right? The mainstream is filled with ignoramuses and cowards who turn the truth on its head because it’s fashionable and no one will give you much trouble over it.
Savvy Kafir says
Good points, Eduardo!
tim gallagher says
Eduardo, I also agree with you and I find this endlessly puzzling, this weird process where leftists support Islam’s vile, backward attitude to every aspect of human life. I’m very glad to be “far right” in their view because I wanted this young woman to escape from barbaric islam ( I want that for everyone) and wanted her life to be saved. This Shanifa Nasser surely knows that the young woman would have been murdered if she went back to Saudi Arabia and must know how oppressed women are in that vile country. I feel sure there’s a special place in hell for people like Shanifa Nasser for doing the dirty work of supporting barbaric Islam when they know what evil they are working for. As you say, eduardo, they continually turn the truth upside down.
gravenimage says
True, Eduardo. Anyone who is opposed to Islamic savagery is dubbed “far right”, no matter how liberal they might be.
Or Else! says
Islamic Studies is littered with inconsistencies. As usual, the Left are fooled again.
I’ll see Nasser’s Masters…and give you Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s PhD in Quran’ic studies from Iraq’s Saddam University for Islamic Studies.
I have a feeling that the programs studied by the likes of Shanifa Nasser are nothing but taqiyya/kitman. Because we KNOW the leader of ISIS is following Mo’s manual and all Muslim jurisprudence to the letter.
Michael Copeland says
As Mr. Spencer says: “Nasser…. neglects to inform us that the death penalty for apostasy is not just Saudi law, but Islamic law”. She also neglects to inform us that Islamic law authorises ANYONE to carry out that death sentence vigilante-style with no penalty “since it is killing someone who deserves to die” (Manual of Islamic Law, “Reliance of the Traveller”, o8.4).
Jihad Watch carried the story a few years ago of a Saudi teenage girl who converted to Christianity. Her father cut out her tongue, lectured her on the Koran, then poured gasoline on her and burnt her to death – “someone who deserves to die”. That is the sort of danger facing a Saudi girl who leaves Islam. She has not only been treasonous to her “deen” (system of governance) by leaving Islam, she has sullied the “honor” (the male supremacist ownership) of her owner-father.
Michael Copeland says
Additionally, under Sharia law, a father is authorised to kill his daughter. Not subject to retaliation (the penalty for a killing) is a parent who kills his offspring (“Reliance” o1.2(4)).

Yes–any pious Muslim can murder an apostate.

——————————————————————————————————
So allowing in one person who credibly fears for her safety is evidence of having “ulterior motives”, but allowing in millions who are no danger whatsoever and haven’t the slightest intention of abandoning islam, is absolutely fine ? How does that work then ?
This is just part of the same underhand agitation that causes cowardly Western governments to refuse to rescue genuinely-endangered Christian populations, or the Yazidi, white South Africans/Rhodesians etc – instead much preferring to leave them there to be wiped-out. After all – rescuing people from certain death might be seen as “islamophobic”…. or “Right-wing” …or even “Christian” – and being mistaken for a Christian must surely be the most horribly embarrassing thing that could ever happen to a Marxist politician such as Merkel, Macron, May, Mogherini etc, or even to a modern Pope….
I assume that the ludicrously-named “Institute for Strategic Dialogue” is in fact yet another Soros/Saudi-funded CAIR/ISNA etc-linked front for the advancement of mass Third World migration and the criminalisation of fair comment ?

It is to the great shame of Canadian taxpayers that our taxes are being flushed down the despicable hole that is the CBC.
The CBC is like its own self contained entity and, in spite of being almost totally funded out of the federal government coffers, does not even reflect the government’s position except by accident. It is desirable, if not necessary, to keep the media free from government interference but the CBC is accountable to no one. Somehow or other it has evolved into a super far left think tank. Consequently no one should be surprised when it comes out with such rubbish as this.

Where does it say that this girl rejected Islam? Nowhere. She wanted to get away from her strict family. Another rich, rebellious teen. She flew to Canada first class (pics on her twitter feed; I saw one) and tweeted to her pals that she “did it!”
If she is an apostate, they will have to hide her, not parade her around, coz she will be on a kill list.

I want to make a comment on that quote from Qaradawi that “if they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment, Islam wouldn’t exist today”. I have read that quote a few times on Jihad Watch and it has always struck me as indicating such a bizarre mentality in this influential MUslim. Whenever I’ve read it, I’ve thought how could anyone support a religion or ideology where you admit that the ideology can only keep its followers by threatening them with death if they dare to leave. These Muslims have such twisted minds. If I was in some religion and I could see that it can’t win people over by preaching or argument but had to threaten anyone who leaves with death, I would know for sure that the religion was a load of rubbish. Islam just seems like some Mafia type criminal mob which no one can dare leave because they will be killed if they do. But then the Mafia crims stick in some rubbish about how it’s god (allah) who commands this. I thought I’d make this comment because this quote from Qaradawi has always struck me as so weird and sick to me. It indicates such a weird mentality that people like Qaradawi are OK about continuing to work for a religion as pathetic as Islam. Islam is full of horrible stuff but this quote from Qaradawi strikes me just about the weirdest of all. Surely saying Islam wouldn’t exist if we didn’t kill you if you try to leave is admitting defeat.
