Does the Rev. Johnnie Moore actually believe that Islam’s teachings are fully and accurately represented by what he summarizes here of the teachings of al-Husayn? Does he not know about Qur’an verses such as these?
“And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from where they drove you out; persecution is worse than slaughter. But fight them not by the Holy Mosque until they should fight you there; then, if they fight you, kill them — such is the recompense of unbelievers, but if they give over, surely Allah is all-forgiving, all-compassionate. Fight them until there is no persecution and the religion is Allah’s; then if they give over, there shall be no enmity save for evildoers.” (Qur’an 2:191-193)
“We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allah of which He had not sent down authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.” (Qur’an 3:151)
“They wish that you should disbelieve as they disbelieve, and then you would be equal; therefore do not take friends from among them, until they emigrate in the way of Allah; then, if they turn their backs, seize them and kill them wherever you find them; do not take for yourselves any one of them as friend or helper.” (Qur’an 4:89)
“This is the recompense of those who fight against Allah and His Messenger, and hasten about the earth to do corruption there: they shall be killed, or crucified, or their hands and feet shall be struck off on opposite sides; or they shall be exiled from the land. That is a degradation for them in this world; and in the world to come awaits them a mighty chastisement.” (Qur’an 5:33)
“When your Lord was revealing to the angels, ‘I am with you; so confirm the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers; so strike the necks, and strike every finger of them!” (Qur’an 8:12)
“Fight them, till there is no persecution and religion is all for Allah; then if they give over, surely Allah sees the things they do.” (Qur’an 8:39)
“Make ready for them whatever force and strings of horses you can, to strike terror into the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides them that you know not; Allah knows them. And whatever you spend in the way of Allah shall be repaid you in full; you will not be wronged.” (Qur’an 8:60)
“Then, when the sacred months are over, kill the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them, and confine them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, and perform the prayer, and pay the alms, then let them go their way; Allah is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.” (Qur’an 9:5)
“Fight those who believe not in Allah and the Last Day and do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and do not practice the religion of truth, even if they are of the People of the Book — until they pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued.” (Qur’an 9:29)
“Allah has bought from the believers their selves and their possessions against the gift of Paradise; they fight in the way of Allah; they kill, and are killed; that is a promise binding upon Allah in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Koran; and who fulfils his covenant truer than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him; that is the mighty triumph.” (Qur’an 9:111)
“O believers, fight the unbelievers who are near to you; and let them find in you a harshness; and know that Allah is with the godfearing.” (Qur’an 9:123)
“When you meet the unbelievers, strike their necks, then, when you have made wide slaughter among them, tie fast the bonds; then set them free, either by grace or ransom, till the war lays down its loads. So it shall be; and if Allah had willed, He would have avenged Himself upon them; but that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He will not send their works astray.” (Qur’an 47:4)
Is Johnnie Moore completely unaware of how Muslims throughout history have actually understood the Qur’an’s exhortations to warfare? He can find out in great detail, largely from Muslim sources, in The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS, which you and he can order here.
Does Johnnie Moore really think that the mullahs would be able to get away, in a country full of Shi’ite Muslims, with ignoring the actual teachings of Shi’ite Islam and “hijacking” the religion? If he would respond, “Why, yes, because they brutally repress dissent,” what about the Shi’ite authorities in Iraq and elsewhere outside Iran? Why haven’t they ever denounced the Islamic regime of Iran as un-Islamic? The Iranian regime gets its legitimacy, insofar as it has any at all, in the eyes of the Iranian people precisely by claiming to implement Islamic law in its fullness and with exacting rigor. Does Johnnie Moore really think that an American Christian such as himself, who clearly is unfamiliar with core Islamic texts and teachings, would be able to spot the ways in which the regime is un-Islamic at a glance, but that the regime would be able to last forty years while calling itself Islamic without there ever being a murmur of protest about how un-Islamic it really is? Protests continue all over Iran, but if Johnnie Moore has seen any of the protesters say that the Islamic regime is un-Islamic, or that it should follow the teachings of al-Husayn, I respectfully request that he send me some evidence of this, because I watch all the protest news and video out of Iran that I can find, and have never seen any hint of that.
This is, in short, self-deception and wishful thinking at its finest.
“Iran should return to ancient teachings of Islam, a religion hijacked in 1979 by a dictatorial regime,” by the Rev. Johnnie Moore, Fox News, February 19, 2019:
…When I think of the 1979 Iranian revolution I see the tragedies of the past 40 years against the backdrop of another idea of Islam best articulated by an early Islamic leader named Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn. He lived from s659 [sic] to 713 and wrote a book called “Risalt al-Huquq,” which translates as “Treatise on Rights”[.]
Al-Husayn called on Muslims to follow these rules of good conduct in dealing with others:
1) Protect your neighbor’s interests when he is absent.
2) Show him respect when he is present.
3) Help him when he suffers an injustice.
4) Do not remain on the lookout to detect his faults; and if you happen to know any undesirable thing about him, hide it from others.
5) At the same time, try to dissuade him from improper habits, if there is any chance that he will listen to you.
6) Never leave him alone at any calamity.
7) Forgive him if he has done any wrong.
8) In short, live with him a noble life, based on the highest Islamic ethical code.
We could certainly use more of these enlightened sentiments in our modern world. Despite our education, prosperity and sophistication, many of us have found it increasingly difficult to accept our neighbors who look, think, believe or vote differently than we do.
Al-Husayn said Muslims should embrace tolerance, coexistence and acceptance of those who are different from them and hold different beliefs. He said Muslims should promote these values of understanding in their societies.
These rules of good conduct reflect a fundamental piece of theology shared by all Abrahamic faiths. Each teaches in its own way that every man, woman and child is made in the very image of God.
Yet Iran’s current theocratic leadership, while claiming to be loyal followers of Shiite Islam, rejects the rules laid out more than 1,000 years ago by al-Husayn, a revered figure who was the great grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
As a student of religion, I’ve often wondered how especially frustrated many of Iran’s Shiite citizens – whose ire for their tyrannical regime is emblazoned daily on social media – must be to see how far their nation’s leaders have departed from the teaching of al-Husayn.
The Iranian people have seen extremism hijack their historic faith and seen their government instead adopt a dangerous mix of Marxism and Islamism – both political ideologies that are only as old as the last century and that have left extraordinary suffering in their wake. These ideas are not part of Islam – they only masquerade as Islam.
The current supreme leader of Iran is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He and his and his henchmen – along with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the 1979 revolution – have entirely rebranded Shiite Islam in our popular imagination through their unrelenting pursuit of personal political power.
The true Shiite Islam is the religion of al-Husayn – a religion marked by benevolence towards one’s neighbor. Khomeini and Khamenei have ruthlessly perverted Islam to turn into a hateful ideology that has victimized Iran’s own citizens and justified hatred against America, Israel and many Western nations….
All of Iran’s activities against its own people and those in other nations have been carried out under the protective cover of religion, defiling the name of God with actions that are not only inhumane, but also irreligious.
Take, for instance, the fact that Iran rounded up more than 100 Christians right in the middle of Advent season, days before they were to celebrate Christmas.
This is not a version of Islam that most Iranians support. It is un-Islamic hatred disguised in the cloak of a great world religion.
Iranians must continue to proclaim from every corner of their country their support for the Islam of the Prophet Muhammad.
The prophet himself once wrote a letter to “the Christians in Persia” that said “they shall not be persecuted for their faith or their customs, but shall be allowed to pray as they will in their own places of worship and according to their own rites.” This is the true Islam.
Yet Ayatollah Khamenei defies the Prophet Muhammad, making a mockery of his claim to be a follower of Islam….

Iran should return to Zoroastrianism. It was Zoroastrian long before it was Islamic. Zoroastrianism is a lot more peaceful than Islam and it has a concept of good and evil.
FYI says
Absolutely.
islam was forced on the Persians : Zoroastrianism was their religion.
It would be great if somehow, the Iranians got rid of the mad mullahs who enslave them and returned to their religion. It is a far better religion than islam..

It would be a wonderful world if we could ALL live by the words of Jesus…”Love your neighbor as yourself” and the “neighbor” don’t just mean the person next door or the one down the street but have we have gone too far from Jesus teachings to ever be able to love our neighbor? The key thing in the koran vs the New Testament (The Jesus Covenant) is this…Jesus didn’t tell l us to kill anyone…not so in Muhammad’s koran.
FYI says
The thing about the 2nd chief commandment is that if truly followed, you get Love, tolerance and the Golden rule.
On a practical level,it indicates that Love is better than hate and trying to get along is better than not trying to get along.
It certainly does not mean you have to go hugging all your actual neighbors!!You might get punched in the face…

Let’s not lose sight of the fact that Rev, Johnnie Moore is *not* talking about Zoroastrianism but about the last caliph of SHIA MUSLIMS (the one they howl and flail their backs about). In his usual missionary form Moore attempts to mislead the poorly informed and gloss over the centuries-old, exceedingly oft-demonstrated core cruelties, apathies, and dualities of died-in-the-wool, intransigent, “perfect” Islam (Shia or Sunni) and thus fill any gullible audience with misleading, soothing pap instead while the jihad progresses using its age-old, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde tactics.
He should be ashamed of himself. He has been given a good and influential position (by gvm. if I recall correctly) and I’m sure he adores the status plus his thirty pieces of silver.
mortimer says
Zoroastrians are positive, industrious and high-functioning due their religious philosophy and high ethical standards.
Renate says
I have only ever met one Zoroastrian. That was a young man I worked with years ago. He was a very pleasant and nice young man, so I had a favourable impression of him.
Renate says
One day at work, we got talking about religion. He didn’t say anything, so I asked him, “And what religion are you?” He said very seriously, “Oh, [my name], I’m from an old, old religion.” (He didn’t think I’d know, but the description “old, old” gave it away), and I said, “You’re Zoroastrian.” He looked up with a twinkle in his eyes and a million dollar smile from ear to ear on his face. He was so happy that someone knew about Zoroastrianism. That was years ago and I have never forgotten that day.
gravenimage says
Thanks for that account, Renate. Few know anything about Zoroastrians–but they are terribly persecuted by Muslims.
Renate says
gravenimage, I hope Islam doesn’t take over. We all stand to lose so much in the way of culture and religion and just plain humanity if they do. They can’t leave anything alone. Even in Afghanistan they were destroying Buddhist artifacts. If it isn’t Islamic, they want it gone. What a destructive attitude!
Lynn says
I also worked with an intelligent and hard working young woman who was a Zoroastrian. Her family had escaped from Iran and moved to India generations ago.

Agreed, Renate.

Zoroastrians were Persians; Invading Arabs were muslims. More and more Arabs have continued to invade Iran since the Ayatollah’s coup. My impression is that physically and mentally a great muddling is making strides and the biggest objectors are those smart, decent Iranians who value their oldest and most representative heritage – Zoroastrianism.

Rev. Moore is CONTRADICTED by the horrific VIOLENCE of Islamic history from its INCEPTION. Moore has done ZERO READING IN ISLAMIC HISTORY if he believes his own malarkey.
Moore is MAKING UP HIS OWN HISTORY OF ISLAM and of JIHAD.
Early Islamic history has been called ‘A RIVER OF BLOOD’ by a former teacher of ISLAMIC HISTORY, Mark Gabriel, PhD, who taught in the past at AL AZHAR UNIVERSITY.
mortimer says
Does Moore not realize that Ali ibn al-Husayn (whom he quotes) was poisoned at Medina upon the order of Caliph al-Walid I ???

Yes–I was going to mention that, as well, Mortimer. This was the beginning of the Sunni-Shia split, and Muslims were slaughtering each other right and left. This is what the foolish Reverend Moore considers a golden age…
Rufolino says

mortimer says
Rev. Moore believes there is an ‘ANCIENT ISLAM’ that was hijacked by terrorists and which they should return to.
Hmmm … let’s CHECK the facts?
Mohammed and his companions obviously ‘HIJACKED’ right at the time of Mohammed. Mohammed and the Caliphs that followed him were nearly ALL ASSASSINATED by their RIVALS …
Sunni Islam’s earliest caliphs were assassinated, mostly by poisoning …
1) Mohammed was poisoned by his closest ‘friends’ Abu Bakr and Omar and their daughters Aisha and Hafsa, but it was blamed on the Jews…blame shifting is another Islamic tradition.
2) Abu Bakr was poisoned next, along with his chief adviser… by Omar. Then
3) Caliph Omar was killed with a poisoned spear. Next,
4) Uthman was killed with a poisoned sword. Mohammed’s grandson, caliph-candidate
5) Hasan ibn `Ali was poisoned by Caliph Muawiyah. Mohammed’s great-grandson, caliph-candidate
6) Alī ibn Ḥusayn bin Ali was poisoned by Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik. Thus, six of Islam’s MOST IMPORTANT figures were murdered by poison!
As well, the Twelve Imams of Shi’ite Islam were mostly poisoned
1.Ali ibn Abu Talib (amir al-Muminin/Commander of the Believers), 660-661AD was assassinated in Kufa by Abd al-Rhman ibn Muljam, a Kharijite, who slashed him with a poisoned sword while he was praying.
2.Hasan ibn Ali (al-Mujtaba/The Chosen) 624-270AD, poisoned by his wife in Medina, Arabia, on the orders of the Caliph Muawiya.
3.Hussain ibn Ali (Sayed ash-Shuhada/The Master of Martyrs), 626-680AD, killed and beheaded at the Battle of Karbala, Iraq.
4.Ali ibn Hussain (Al-Sajjad, Zayn al’Abidin/The One who Constantly Prostrates, The Ornament of Worshippers, 658-712AD, dided from poisoning at the order of Caliph al-Walid I in Medina.
5.Muhammad ibn Ali (Baqir al-Ulum/The Revealer of Knowledge), 677-732AD, poisoned by Ibrahim ibn Walid ibn ‘Abdallah in Medina on the order of Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik.
6.Ja’far ibn Muhammad (As-Sadiq/The Righteous), 702-765AD, poisoned at Medina on the order of Caliph al-Mansur.
7.Musa ibn Ja’far (Al-Kadhim/The Calm One), 744-799AD, imprisoned and poisoned at Baghdad, Iraq on the order of Caliph Harun al-Rashid.
8.Ali ibn Musa (Ar-Rida/The Pleasing One), 765-817AD, poisoned at Mashad, Persia, on the order of Caliph al-Ma’mun.
9.Muhammad ibn Ali (Al-Taqi, Al-Jawad/The Godfearing, The Generous), 810-835AD, poisoned by his wife, Al-Ma’mun’s daughter at Baghdad, Iraq, on the order of Caliph al-Mut’tasim.
10. Ali ibn Muhammad, (Al-Hadi, Al-Naqi/The Guide, The Pure), 827-868AD, poisoned an Samarra, Iraq on the order of Caliph al-Mu’tazz.
11.Hasan ibn Ali, (Al-Askari/The Citizen of a Garrison Town), 846-874AD, poisoned on the order of Caliph al-Mu’tamid at Samarra, Iraq.
12.Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, (Mahdi, Hidden Imam, Al-Hujjah/The Guided One, The Proof), 868AD- ???? … supposedly living in occultation since 827AD.

Joe says
There was a religion in Petra where people from all over the world visited on a pilgrimage. The “rocks” in Mecca used to be in Petra. The qiblas of the old mosques point to Petra. There is a direct connection. The governor of Petra (not Mohammed) rebelled and they took the rocks south. This was before Mecca was built. The rocks were not immediately taken to Mecca because it was not built. While between Petra and Mecca, Mohammed became the warlord leading the group. It is easy to tell from his sutras that he hijacked Islam (or whatever it was called before Mohammed). The religion of Petra goes back as far as history, but we don’t know much about it. We know that it was the holy pilgrimage site for those who attended mosques.
The sutras in the Koran before Mohammed are written by Christians and Jews. They are still in the Koran. We know this because they copy word for word from texts that preceded the sutras. For example, some sutras are from a speech given by a Byzantine emperor. The warlord sutras are from Mohammed, and it is those that everyone hates.
Ancient Islam might have been peaceful enough. It was hijacked by Mohammed.
In addition, John of Damascus who lived right after Mohammed was told by the Muslims that Mohammed received his sutras in his sleep (not in a cave or given by Gabriel). John did an essay on Islam right after Mohammed died. The point is that the divine origin of the Koran was changed to make it seem more authentic. The sutras from Mohammed are just dreams of a warlord.
Carol the 1st says
And so are the dreams of a “divine” Islam. Lost in the mists of time even if we’d care to assume it relevant or conceivable that ‘something’ with biblical sutras once glimmered in palatable form – a lot like the Camelot fantasy. What’s that got to do with the price of bread? The dough was badly proofed and came out tough, flat, and deserving of total rejection.

Member of US Commission for International Religious Freedom: “Iran should return to ancient teachings of Islam”
…………………………..
*Good lord*. What does the witless Reverend Johnnie Moore think the Islamic revolution there forty years ago was all about?
More:
…When I think of the 1979 Iranian revolution I see the tragedies of the past 40 years against the backdrop of another idea of Islam best articulated by an early Islamic leader named Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn…
…………………………..
Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn was the grandson of the violent warlord “Prophet” Muhammed, and was not opposed to Jihad, which he took part in himself. And his mother was the daughter of the last pre-Islamic ruler of Persia, who was kidnapped and raped by the Muslim conquerors.
This last was of course not his fault–but he is not recorded as having any problem with this perfectly Islamic savagery.
And note that all of the above only applies to same-sect Muslims–not Infidels or other-sect Muslims, whom he waged violent Jihad against.
mortimer says
Superb point, GI ! Upon what IDEOLOGICAL foundation does Moore assume the violent Islamic Revolution in Iran was based? Not upon ‘real’ Islam, he surmises. But it was not based on Marxism or on Seventh-Day Adventism !
In what CENTURY was Islam a benign and non-militant and non-aggressive IDEOLOGICAL force?
From 640AD onwards, Europe has been HAMMERED BY HUNDREDS OF JIHAD ATTACKS.
Where is the CENTURY of PEACEFUL ISLAM, MOORE? A century in which Muslims did not spread Islam by the sword?

How can people like this Rev be so f’ing stupid and ignorant?
He says: “Each [of the Abrahamic faiths] teaches in its own way that every man, woman and child is made in the very image of God.”
He does not know Qur’an 42:11, which says in one of the most popular translations that “Naught is as his [Allah’s] likeness.” In other translations of 42:11 one reads one or another variation of “Nothing is like Allah.” Qur’an 42:11 is clearly a rejection of the Bible’s claim that human beings are made in God’s likeness or image. That rejection is very much in tune with the lack of basic human rights in most of the Islamic world.

Unfortunately after the fall of the Shah, Iran did return to ancient teachings of Islam. It would have been better for them if they had returned to Zoroastrianism. Unlike Islam, Zoroastrianism teaches morality.

I saw this piece by the Rev. Johnnie Moore when it was posted on the Fox news website a couple of days ago. I was immediately suspect.
I conducted due diligence and came to the conclusion that the op-ed piece was grossly inaccurate. And I did do a significant amount of digging.
Fox news is much better than the liberal mainstream media so I was disappointed that the op-ed piece was not followed up with counterpoint, etc. to give the article some balance.
Unfortunately is very likely that a high percentage of Fox news readers did not bother to conduct any type of independent research and thus came to the wrong conclusions.
Perhaps Robert Spencer could submit his above article to Fox news in rebuttal to the peace by the Rev. Johnnie Moore.
mortimer says
Only a handful of the mainstream media interviewers have a clue about Islamic teachings. The rest are too lazy and careless to learn anything whatsoever about Islam.
Their editors are no better. They pass uncritically whitewashing material about Islam, because they personally were too lazy to learn anything about it. Most journalists are only interested in local or federal politics and nothing beyond that.
Kepha says
The rights Moore mentions were probably only intended for persons belonging to the Ummah. Others, including Dhimmi, had to know their [subordinate] place.
The ignorance about any traditional belief seems to be institutionalized in Washington. Back in the days of the elder Bush, when I joined the State Department (so aptly named Foggy Bottom), the line was that “fundamentalism” was a Shi’ite disease to which Sunnites were immune; Sufi’ism was kinder and gentler, especially in “monsoon Islam” (as opposed to “desert Islam”), and there was a sense that somehow, somewhere, there were Islamic modernists (comparable to Protestant modernists), who would obligingly roll over and play dead at the command of their [Western, self-appointed “enlightened”, liberal or socialist] cultured despisers.
If this Johnnie Moore is the same guy who used to be at Liberty University, I can only say that either that institution has gone soft, Moore himself has gone soft, or proximity to the centers of power corrupts and clouds the minds of even the best.
Uncle Kepha remains of the mind that the only reform of Islam worth contemplating is the wholesale movement of Muslims to the Christ of the Old and New Testaments.
