Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Ilhan Omar in Vogue Arabia: “To me, the hijab means power, liberation, beauty, and resistance”

Mar 31, 2019 2:00 pm By Robert Spencer

To her, maybe. But what does Ilhan Omar think about Aqsa Parvez, whose Muslim father choked her to death with her hijab after she refused to wear it? Or Amina Muse Ali, a Christian woman in Somalia whom Muslims murdered because she wasn’t wearing a hijab? Has she shown any concern for the 40 women who were murdered in Iraq in 2007 for not wearing the hijab; or for Alya Al-Safar, whose Muslim cousin threatened to kill her and harm her family because she stopped wearing the hijab in Britain; or for Amira Osman Hamid, who faced whipping in Sudan for refusing to wear the hijab; or for the Egyptian girl, also named Amira, who committed suicide after being brutalized by her family for refusing to wear the hijab; or for the Muslim and non-Muslim teachers at the Islamic College of South Australia who were told they had to wear the hijab or be fired; or for the women in Chechnya whom police shot with paintballs because they weren’t wearing hijab; or for the women in Chechnya who were threatened by men with automatic rifles for not wearing hijab; or for the elementary school teachers in Tunisia who were threatened with death for not wearing hijab; or for the Syrian schoolgirls who were forbidden to go to school unless they wore hijab; or for the women in Gaza whom Hamas has forced to wear hijab; or for the women in Iran who protested against the regime, even before the recent uprising, by daring to take off their hijabs; or for the women in London whom Muslim thugs threatened to murder if they didn’t wear hijab; or for the anonymous young Muslim woman who doffed her hijab outside her home and started living a double life in fear of her parents; or for the fifteen girls in Saudi Arabia who were killed when the religious police wouldn’t let them leave their burning school building because they had taken off their hijabs in their all-female environment; or for the girl in Italy whose mother shaved her head for not wearing hijab; or for all the other women and girls who have been killed or threatened, or who live in fear for daring not to wear the hijab?

Courageous women in the Islamic Republic of Iran are taking off their hijabs as a sign of resistance to the oppressive Sharia regime under which they live, and at least 29 women have been arrested for doing so. For far too many women around the world, the hijab is not a symbol of power, liberation, beauty, and resistance, but of their own powerlessness, oppression, dehumanization and subjugation. Who is standing in solidarity with them? Not Ilhan Omar.

“Ilhan Omar: ‘To Me, the Hijab Means Power, Liberation, Beauty, and Resistance,'” by Alexandria Gouveia, Vogue Arabia, March 28, 2019 (thanks to the Geller Report):

Twenty years after becoming a US citizen, Ilhan Omar made history in her adopted country. With her hand on her grandfather’s Qur’an, she was sworn into the US Congress, becoming the first hijabi member to do so. The scene was all the more poignant as it marked the lifting of a 181-year-old ban preventing anyone from wearing any kind of headwear in the chamber. Along with Rashida Tlaib (who doesn’t wear a hijab), she was also one of the first two Muslim women to enter Congress, and the first Somali-American….

As the US representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, one of Omar’s policies includes promoting and establishing a just immigration system; something that is at odds with the current political climate in the country. “It’s challenging,” she says of living in President Trump’s America, where her status and heritage is constantly criticized. “It’s an everyday assault. Every day, a part of your identity is threatened, demonized, and vilified. Trump is tapping into an ugly part of our society and freeing its ugliness. It’s been a challenge to try to figure out how to continue the inclusion; how to show up every day and make sure that people who identify with all the marginalized identities I carry, feel represented. It’s transitioning from the idea of constantly resisting to insisting in upholding the values we share – that this is a society that was built on the idea that you could start anew. And what that celebrates is immigrant heritage.”

Wearing her hijab allows her to be a “walking billboard” not only for her faith but also for representing something different from the norm. “To me, the hijab means power, liberation, beauty, and resistance,” she says. She has a son, Adnan, and two daughters with husband Ahmed Hirsi. Whether her girls, Ilwad and Isra, want to wear the hijab, is up to them, she says. “I grew up in a religious society and my father and grandfather believed that their role was to teach right from wrong. For me, that is how I raise my kids. I work to remove obstacles so they can live at their best and happiest selves,” she says. “If that translates to adapting the hijab, that’s fine. If they don’t, that’s also fine. They have freedom of choice. Society tends to place lots of limitations, depending on what gender you are. I want my kids to be free.” She wants to share this approach with all women, advising them to be themselves. “Walk in your own path. We are as much worthy of joy, power, and pleasure as the next human. We are deserving and we don’t need permission or an invitation to exist and to step into our power.”

        Mar 31, 2019 at 4:18 pm

“to distinguish her from the nasty “infidel” women”
        That’s it.

        Per Omar:
“To me, the hijab means power, liberation, beauty, and resistance”

The only accurate part of that is ‘power’ (over others):

        Qur’an 33:59:
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known [distinguished from unbelieving and slave women] and not be abused.

        Qur’an 24:31:
And tell the believing women [i.e., Muslims] to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., their slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment.

Don’t know what it ‘liberates’ her from, and she’s certainly not ‘resisting’ Islamic law.

        • mortimer says

          Mar 31, 2019 at 9:58 pm

All points of PRCS are correct. The Islamic veil ‘EMPOWERS’ Muslim women not to be raped by Muslim men. But the non-use of the veil signals to Muslim men that they may rape and get away with it.

          Regarding WHD:

Feminist activist Asra Nomani says “as Muslim women, we actually ask you not to wear the hijab in the name of interfaith solidarity,” going on to say, “This modern-day movement spreads an ideology of political Islam.”

The political commentator Maajid Nawaz accuses the day as being a “well-financed effort by conservative Muslims to dominate modern Muslim societies,” and says that the event spreads the “misleading interpretation” that the head covering is always worn voluntarily, and that “hijab” purely means headscarf. He also described the event as “worse than passé,” suggesting that the name be changed to “Hijab is a Choice Day”.

In 2018, Canadian human-rights campaigner Yasmine Mohammed started a #NoHijabDay campaign in response, to celebrate the women who have defied social censure and the state to remove the hijab.

          She says:

No Hijab Day is a day to support brave women across the globe who want to be free from the hijab. Women who want to decide for themselves what to wear or what not to wear on their heads. Women who fight against either misogynist governments that will imprison them for removing their hijab or against abusive families and communities that will ostracize, abuse and even kill them.

          —————————
          So, NO HIJAB Day!

          Y’all…. Peace!!!

The writer used the word “poignant” in describing the fact that her wearing of the ugly scarf meant the end of the prevention of anyone wearing head coverings in the “chamber.”
    poignant definition
evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret.

    synonyms:
    touching · moving · sad · saddening · affecting · pitiful · piteous · pitiable · pathetic · sorrowful · mournful · tearful · wretched · miserable · bitter · painful · distressing · (Oxford Dictionary)

Although “touching and moving” are the first synonyms, the majority of the remainder are of the variety that denote Unhappiness with the situation. The origin of the word meant “to prick.” Obviously, to “hurt.”

Yes, she is using her scarf to gain power…she is daring people, everyone, everywhere, to say something about it, to criticize it and to point out what it really means so she can accuse them of bullying and “a fear of her as a moslim without any reason.”

and Yes, “resistance.” She is resisting the idea that she is supposed to represent **all of the people** and not just moslims, esp those who have committed terrorism and those who want to get into the country, by hook or crook.

But…”beauty.” Ha. Just the opposite, esp in her case. If she wanted to remove it, but was afraid to, afraid for her safety if she did, then she might not be ugly on the inside, but the outside…She definitely needs a mirror. Stop resisting the mirror, moslim.

  7. Walter Sieruk says

Wow ! how bazaar to even think the the hijab “means power ,liberation, beauty” To all logical sane people the hijab represents oppression, misogyny and cruelty .

The evils of the hijab are even worse ,it also means murder. . For example a few years ago in Saudi Arabia ,at night, a girls dorm caught fire..Those young girls , naturally ran out of that dorm in great hast because of the fire. The Saudi Islamic state police literally made the girls renter that burning dorm because they forgot to take and put on their hijab before they left the burning building. All those girls died ,suffering in that fire. This is more brutal cruel Islamic murder , this time connected with the hijab.

Omar speaks nonsense and outright falsehoods.

At that time, and to date, Assad was killing his own people. Then Vogue did a vomit worthy puff piece on Assad and his wife, while the Syrian people were under attack! Pres Bush was in office at the time .
Refused to allow another Vogue magazine in my home again. Of course, editor Anna Wintour is a flaming progressive, Obama supporting Nazi liberal! This cover, with treasonous Oman , is beyond disgusting.

  12. Wellington says

    Mar 31, 2019 at 4:28 pm

Sartorial symbols are important. They are indicative of the beliefs behind what is worn. For instance, a beautiful, well-shaped woman wearing a bikini (I would not advise doing this in an Islamic nation—but I digress) is conveying that she is understandably proud of her body and she does not mind displaying a goodly amount of it (though with men who can control themselves, and I think it best here to assume that no Muslim man can—yeah, safer this way—this certainly does not serve as a carte blanche to deal at all with such a woman in a predatory way—she has every right to proudly show off what nature and discipline has done for her and with nothing negative coming her way for doing so). Likewise, a Jewish man wearing a yarmulke is conveying to others his belief in, and respect for, the Jewish faith, a faith which, like Christianity and contra Islam, places a significant emphasis upon the dignity and worth of the individual and which has adopted a Golden Rule for all.

Then there are those who display some kind of attire that betokens malevolence and supremacist thinking. A Ku Klux Klan “outfit” does exactly this as does wearing a swastika armband. And so is it the case with the hijab, which indicates female submission to the male, the onus completely on the female for the male being attracted to her, the Implication that women who do not “cover themselves” deserve what they get (this is so Islamic) but, even worse (and deuce difficult to get worse here but Islam “manages” to do so), supremacy of Muslims over non-Muslims, even to the extent that not only does Islam, wherever dominant, create inequality under the law between Muslim and non-Muslim by way of establishing a Jim Crow system based not on race but on belief, but even goes so far, per every major Islamic school of theology to this very day, Sunni or Shiite, as to consider non-Muslims the equivalent of human waste a la the ten unclean things per Islamthink.

So, thus and verily, when I see a woman wearing an hijab I immediately consider it the essential equivalent of a KKK “hoodie” or some Neo-Nazi wearing a swastika armband. Yes I do and I will never desist from doing so. Never because the hijab betokens a belief system which is a mortal enemy of liberty, equality under the law, real women’s rights, overall fun in life, music, pictorial art, a Golden Rule for all and last, but not necessarily least, great beer, which, btw, I am having right now—a Yuengling Porter, which is no more compatible with Islam that is a Beethoven symphony.

Yep, this is what I think of the hijab. Guess Omar and I have a major disagreement on this “matter.” Damn right we do. Forever.

The hard left *loves* the term “resistance”. That Omar is “resisting” freedom and democracy does not much seem to concern them.

The veil deliberately marks women as private and restricted property, nonpersons. The veil sets women apart from men and apart from the world; it restrains them, confines them, grooms them for docility. A mind can be cramped just as a body may be, and a Muslim veil blinkers both your vision and your destiny. It is the mark of a kind of apartheid, not the domination of a race but of a sex.

    Power over the Infidels, maybe.

And resistance against…what? Against Infidels being in control of their own civilized societies?

And while her daughters are free to wear or not wear the Hijab–unless, of course, their family decides to murder them–the same is hardly true in Saudi Arabia, as she pretends.

Only in the upside-down world of sharia compliant taqiyya (lying in the service of Islam) is a hijab the symbol of “power, liberation, beauty, and resistance.” In the carefully crafted taqiyya language of CAIR, Omar presents the Islamic symbol of female subjugation as freedom. Americans can best understand this deceitful jibber-jabber by reading the opening chapter of George Orwell’s 1984, “War is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength.” Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is a staunch Democrat who donated heavily to Obama and Hillary. It appears Anna Wintour is doing her political best to try to make female subjugation fashionable. In 2014 Wintour decided to get political and hired the former National Finance Director of the Democratic National Committee, Hildy Kuryk, as the Director of Communications for Vogue Magazine. Kuryk is a co-chair on the advisory board of Obama’s activist Organizing for Action which is heavily funded by mega donors like George Soros. Vogue has disgraced itself by trying to manipulate public opinion to accept the unacceptable Wake up America! War is war, freedom is freedom, slavery is slavery, ignorance is ignorance, and the hijab is the universal Islamic symbol of female subjugation.

Noting that Islamic law (Qur’an and sunna) applies only to Muslims, dhimmis, slaves and travelers where it is THE law of the land (being irrelevant to you, to me, and to Western hijabis who are protected by secular, man made laws from its full imposition—

Although Qur’an tells Muslim women to not “stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment (modesty), the actual purpose of that Islamic symbol is to distinguish “free, Muslim women”—when in public—from “unbelieving and slave women”; in order to prevent them from being “abused” by Muslim men.

      Essentially, rape her. Not me.

      Qur’an 33:59
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.

      Qur’an 24:31
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women.

To their frustration, Western “unbelievers” are under no obligation to treat Muslim women better than any other.

“hijab the symbol of “power, liberation, beauty, and resistance.”

As one who loves to study history I like to point out that 7th century Islam came way before 18th century ENLIGHTENMENT and the founding of Democratic nations with their free constitutions.

    The founders/ organizers/ leaders and supporters of those nations/ constitutions;

THEY were rebels, a resistance against the earlier dictators; the hereditary kings and nobles and yes, also part of the church. And their culture.

These Enlightenment democrats certainly were in big disagreement with Islam and in that way rebels and resistance against that too. And new, fresh, progressive at the time.

So as I see it, WE are the rebels/ resistance to the archaic religion of Islam and it’s societal system.

Ilhan Omar is merely a throwback in time, she symbolizes, with her hijab and all, a recurrence of the culture of the old oppressors. She has nothing new, nothing progressive to present, I wish young people would see that.

“She has nothing new, nothing progressive to present,”

As the Byzantine Emporer, Paleaologus, said, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

As Islam is not a warm and fuzzy ideology, Islam has nothing progressive to present.

I appreciate your comments Ilhan. However, since a woman’s opinion is worth half that of a man in Islam, women suffer from a mental deficiency according to Mohammad, and most women are going to hell (I haven’t quite figured out the math on that one given that every jihadi is supposed to get 72 virgins, but Mohammad said it, so I guess he should know); there is absolutely no reason why we should listen to anything you have to say. It would be foolish, to say the least, to listen to a half-human, idiot, who is most likely going to hell. But thanks for speaking up anyway.

In the WEST a Muslim Supremacist like Ilhan Omar, actually gets to mouth off to infidel men and therefore she must feel really “EMPOWERED.” Yet, she can get away with wearing a ton of make-up even though that’s haram in Muslimville but that makes her feel BEAUTIFUL and Voguish chic…sort of LIBERATED you could say…but that’s by special dispensation of her male master so that she can carry out her stealth RESISTANCE Jihad against America. Muslim supremacists say that the hijab is for modesty…dontcha know?! But when she wears her hijab in the land of the House of War…she is showing off her supremacy against us filthy kaffirs just like the KKK wore their supremacist tall pointy white hats to intimidate Blacks. Normalizing the “hijab” is in essence normalizing Sharia Law for us filthy kaffirs who hate Islam and all that it represents. When she wears her hijab she gets to play both VICTIM and SUPREMACIST….then you add plenty of lipstick and her face on the cover of Vogue. Nonetheless, if you put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig.

The hijab gives you power, liberation, beauty, and resistance, muslima? Well, hey, you should be giving the niqab a try? Wanna look even more beautiful? Then the niqab will make you look 100 times more beautiful! trust me on that one. If the cloth is thick enough it will liberate use from having to listen to you. The niqab would give you the power to shoplift without anyone being to identify you. And you can resist any attempts by government to legislate revealed faces. You’d be a (cough, cough) winner all ways around!

Easy for her to say…She is in the U.S. But as noted, in several Islamic countries where there is no such freedom look what happens to the women.

In this article, Mr. Klein quotes the creepy creature saying she was happier in the refugee camp in Kenya than she is in the U.S. He also points out that her brother-in-law works for the government of somalia and there are threats to U.S. security because of her position on the foreign affairs committee.

Daniel Greenfield also wrote an article her and her use of campaign funds to pay her attorney to divorce her brother. That article was featured on the Washington Standard site.

She says her two daughters will have the “freedom” to choose whether or not they will wear the hijab. Could that be because they live in the United States, a country that welcomed Ilhans family and gave her the privilege to get a law degree, which she has used to bite the hand that helped her. She has never said, to my knowledge, that she is thankful to be here. Dorothy Gianaras
