The force was largely used in a wrongheaded and counterproductive manner. However, the idea that we should have done nothing to counter al-Qaeda after 9/11 is simply a counsel of surrender. Traitors and saboteurs have become mainstream on the Left today.
“Ocasio-Cortez: U.S. Should Not Have Authorized Use Of Force Against 9/11 Perpetrators,” by Ryan Saavedra, Daily Wire, March 5, 2019:
Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made radical statements Monday night on Twitter, suggesting that the United States should not have authorized the use of force against those who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks — the deadliest terrorist attack in world history.
“It is disturbing that Rep. Omar continues to perpetuate hurtful anti-Semitic stereotypes that misrepresent our Jewish community. Additionally, questioning support for the U.S.-Israel relationship is unacceptable,” Democrat Rep. Juan Vargas (CA) tweeted. “Israel has and remains a stalwart ally of the United States because of our countries’ shared interests and values. I condemn her remarks and believe she should apologize for her offensive comments.”
Ocasio-Cortez responded in a dishonest manner, suggesting that Vargas was calling out Omar’s foreign policy stances, not her anti-Semitism.
“I‘m curious if Rep. Vargas will further explain his stance here that it’s unacceptable to even *question* US foreign policy,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Plenty of Dem members have asserted that discussion + debate on this issue is fair and merited. Is this stance a departure from that?”

Ocasio-Cortez continued with another tweet that contained some false information: “I remember a time when it was ‘unacceptable’ to question the Iraq War. All of Congress was wrong, including both GOP & Dem Party, and led my generation into a disastrous + wrong war that virtually all would come to regret, except for the one member who stood up: Barbara Lee.”
After being called out for the tweet’s inaccuracies, Ocasio-Cortez clarified that she meant the Afghanistan war, and added: “(But honestly we shouldn’t have been in either, and we should end the AUMF now while we’re at it)”
Ocasio-Cortez plainly stated that “all of Congress was wrong” to vote in favor of the Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) and that Barbara Lee was correct for not voting for it.“The AUMF was passed with Lee’s lone dissenting vote on Sept. 14, 2001, three days after terrorists from Osama Bin Laden’s al Qaeda organization crashed commercial airliners into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania killing more than 3,000 people,” The Huffington Post reported.
The Hill noted that the AUMF “authorizes the president ‘to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons’— in other words, al Qaeda and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.”….

Never have I come across a finer example than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of the truth that Mark Twain stated long ago about those in the federal American legislature, which I have previously noted here at JW. Twain said, “Suppose you were a member of Congress and suppose you were an idiot, but I repeat myself.”
This women is woefully ignorant, even dangerously so. And a la Disraeli, she has few ideas and all of those are wrong. She’s a self-righteous, foolish piece of work all right. And beware of anyone who admires her because they’re trouble too.

It has been accurately stated that the only people dumber than Allie Occasional-cortex are the ones that voted for her. Normally that would be a contained number in a single district. Unfortunately there are at least a million dummies online who clutch on every one of her bird-brained utterances……and they’re old enough to vote! Thankfully her idiocy is being called out.

Spot on, Wellington.

Agreed, AOC is a dangerous woman to be in Congress.
And – most people who do run for Congress already have a background in politics.
What does AOC have?
Barista on her resume.
That should be a red flag right there.
And no, organizing Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign does not count.

I don’t think barista is a “red flag”. It should not be one of the more recent jobs on a Congressperson’s resume, though…

Ocasio-Cortez is only an ignorant leftist who doesn’t know anything about jihad. So let her be a victim of jihad so she has a taste of it.

I maintain she is a danger to American way of life. She is dangerous because she is charismatic and speaks nonsense in a manner liberals find amusing. She has too large an audience of followers based on appearance, not substance. Her ideas, like getting rid of “farting cows” unbelievably are taken seriously by the left wing. Moreover, her animosity toward Israel is troubling.

Just think what it must have been like with upwards of 60 million of those farting animals running loose. Or don’t bison fart? I wonder if there were huge herds of farting dinosaurs? Is that why the Earth’s climate was warmer millions of years ago? Oh, thank you, AOC, for getting me to ponder those questions.

I was opposed to the invasion of Iraq until I read McGrory and Bhattia’s book Saddam’s Bomb. I believe Saddam Hussein would have renewed his 30 year quest for nuclear weapons as soon as sanctions ended and the world turned its back on him.
Wellington says
Bush was correct in taking out Saddam Hussein who was a megalomaniac out of control and he gave every impression that he was still hiding WMDs (every major intelligence agency thought so too). SH was also many times over in violation of the truce terms established after the 1991 Gulf War (e.g., firing regularly on American and British jets patrolling the two no-fly zones over Iraq). No American President could have left SH in power after 9/11 (well, maybe Obama would have).
Where Bush erred, grievously, was in thinking that democracy could be implanted in an Islamic polity. What Bush should have done after getting rid of SH and his psychopathic sons, was keep the Iraqi army in tact, pick a strong man from among it who would have run Iraq pretty much as Mubarak ran Egypt, and then, minus perhaps a few American Special Forces left to take out the worst of the Islamic dead-enders, simply pack up and leave. This would have saved many American soldiers’ lives and would have also saved us untold billions (trillions?) of dollars.
Terry Gain says
I disagree that it made any sense at all to keep Saddam’s Sunni Army intact. And it would have been grossly immortal. They would have continued to massacre the majority Shiites, just as they did while Saddam’s was in power.
I don’t think there was an easy solution but Iraq is now not a threat to the West and is no longer engaged in the wholesale slaughter of its own citizens.
I think that what was lost was any reasonable sense of the sacrifices it takes to win a war. Those sacrifice might have been lessened if the Rules of Engagement weren’t so stupid.
As for “the good war”, the one in Afghanistan, it wasn’t worth the loss of one American life. It should have been fought from the air only and repeated as necessary.
Terry Gain says
Please just ignore the auto-errs.
Wellington says
Well, again, Terry we disagree (mostly). What a surprise. I’ll take your points in reverse order.
First, as far back as WWII it was determined by the vast majority of military thinkers that you cannot win a war by air power alone. Boots on the ground are necessary, at least Special Forces personnel.
Second, respecting the rules of engagement, yes, American forces were restricted way too much, even to the point of putting said military forces in grave danger. Political correctness never works anywhere but, arguably, it is at its most idiotic on the battlefield.
Third, Iraq to the extent that it is not a direct threat to the West is a smoke and mirrors assessment since it is now a client state of Iran. How is this a positive for America and the West?
Fourth, my suggestion that the Iraqi Army should have been kept largely in tact and some officer from it installed as leader of Iraq is predicated on the assumption that such a new leader would keep the Iraqi military mostly in check. If he did not, he would know only too well America could remove him just as they did Saddam Hussein. Besides, to the extent that such a new leader would allow the occasional and so typical killing of fellow Muslims here and there, far better that this occur than that American soldiers die or are grievously injured. As I have written before at JW, there are four givens in life: 1) death; 2) taxes; 3) Muslims killing non-Muslims; and 4) Muslims killing fellow Muslims. 3) and 4) overlap with 1) and 4) is far preferable to 3).
Terry Gain says
Wellington
1. I never suggested that Saddam’s Hussein could be removed by air power alone. Nice straw man. It seems you have never read Saddam’s Bomb. Are you suggesting Saddam should have been left in place?
2. We seem to agree. Should I reconsider my point of view?
3. Iraq is not threatening America.
4. Leaving Hussein’s Sunni army intact “to protect” Iran’s majority Shiites – the very people they had been massacring for the previous 25 years – is the dumbest idea I had heard prior to Obama’s Iran deal.
Wellington says
NO straw man whatsoever on your first point, Terry, by me. I was referencing ONLY your comment about Afghanistan and not Iraq at all. You just got this plain wrong.
As for your other points, and specifically the Sunni minority going after the Shiite majority in Iraq, did you not pay attention at all to what I already said, to wit, minus some minor killings here and there, said selected Mubarak-type by America would be on notice that slaughters en masse would not be an option.
Also, I do indeed value American soldiers’s lives more than any Sunnis or Shiites in Iraq. Maybe you don’t but I do. Review my four “givens.” And also think of all the billions America would have saved had Bush done as I outlined.
You should really read things more carefully, Terry, before responding.

I like Terry’s responses mostly. Anyway, there’s only two types of Muslim regimes, the dictator who’s temporarily putting a lid on the boiling pot of Islamic jihad, and the boiling pot of Islamic jihad. Both of them are part of the jihad against us, and there ain’t NEVER been an American or Western political leadership that recognizes this (except maybe so far back it doesn’t really count for us now).
What this means is the West should cut off all ties to the entire damned Muslim world and send them all their Muzzies back. Just ’cause we ain’t probably gonna do this don’t mean it ain’t the only way to save us from Islam.

“We were taken to war on a lie” is correct. No WMD’s in Iraq, & Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. If 19 Saudi hijackers + Saudi Osama Bin Laden + funds from high up Saudi places did 9/11, Saudi Arabia should have been invaded, not Iraq. It was an illegal invasion according to the UN.
………
Your post is not just a lie but a vicious one. Every single western intelligence agency believed Hussein had WMD. The ceasefire agreement required that Iraq destroy its weapons before inspectors. It failed to do so. We still do not know what was in those convoys of truck which went from Iraq to Syria just prior to the war.
In any event, it is brain dead to suggest that Hussein would not have resumed his WMD programs as soon as sanctions ended and the world looked away.
The UN is nuts. It is now facilitating an Islamic invasion of Europe.

SURNAME GAIN
This very interesting surname, one of the very earliest ever recorded anywhere in the world, is English, but of Olde French origins. It was first given as a nickname for a clever person, deriving from the pre 7th century word “engaingne”, itself arguably from the Roman – Latin “ingania”, and meaning “ingenuity”.
