“Real Time host Bill Maher blasted George Clooney’s call for a boycott of hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei…which next month will implement Islamic criminal laws to punish gay sex by stoning offenders to death.”
Although Bill Maher admitted to the harm that Sharia brings to women, gays, and others in Saudi Arabia, Brunei and everywhere else it is implemented, he rebuked Clooney for being impractical and “virtue-signalling.” Yet Clooney argued a valid point: “are we really going to help fund the murder of innocent citizens?'”
The murder of innocent people is a daily occurrence not only at the hands of jihadists, but also under numerous Sharia provisions.
Meanwhile, Elton John has supported Clooney in his call to boycott Brunei-owned hotels.
Both Maher and Clooney have a point. Maher is right that opposition to Sharia should be consistent. There need to be a full, open, honest discussions about Sharia and the abuses it sanctions. These abuses need to be brought out into the public square. Turning a blind eye to them is not the answer. Let’s hope this spark in the entertainment industry ignites. It has long been baffling how gay rights activists and women’s rights activists could remain silent for so long in the face of the Sharia abuse of those they claim to be defending.
The least Western countries should be doing is taking immediate measures to reject all principles of Sharia that contradict the principles of free societies. Aside from its misogyny and death penalty for homosexuality, Sharia also calls for death for speech that offends Islam. Instead of discussing this, Western countries have fallen for the “Islamophobia” deception.
Islam should and must be scrutinized like all other ideologies and religions.
Clooney’s wife Amal was reported to have been blacklisted by Hollywood for being outspoken about Islamic State jihadists and for “urging the U.N. Security Council to focus on genocide against Yazidis.” As an international human rights lawyer, Amal also paired up with Nobel Peace Prize-winning former Yazidi sex slave Nadia Murad to “take ISIS to trial.”
“‘It’s chickens**t tokenism:’ Bill Maher slams George Clooney’s call for a boycott of hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei after nation announced it would stone to death any Muslims engaging in gay sex,” by Leah McDonald, Daily Mail, March 30, 2019:
Real Time host Bill Maher blasted George Clooney’s call for a boycott of hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei as ‘chicken s**t tokenism.’
Clooney called for a boycott of nine hotels in the U.S. and Europe with ties to the sultan of Brunei, which next month will implement Islamic criminal laws to punish gay sex by stoning offenders to death.
The Hollywood actor wrote Thursday in Deadline Hollywood: ‘Are we really going to help fund the murder of innocent citizens?’
He wrote that ‘you can’t shame murderous regimes,’ but you can shame ‘the banks, the financiers and the institutions that do business with them.’
However during a ‘Real Time’ panel discussion, Maher said Clooney’s call for a boycott ‘really bothered’ him.
‘It’s chickens**t tokenism,’ Maher said. ‘What about Saudi Arabia? If you really want to get back to them, stop driving, don’t use oil.
‘It’s Sharia Law, which is some version of the law in most Muslim-majority countries,’ Maher continued.
And if you want to be against that, you know, speak openly and honestly about standing up for liberal principles.’
The HBO star added that liberal activist Clooney is a ‘really smart guy’ who knows about problems in the Middle East,
However he added that the Oscar-winner’s ‘virtue signaling’ ultimately won’t make an impact….
Kay says
Well, I suppose there can be ignorance or even willful ignorance about the crimes “justified” by sharia. When there’s a public announcement, however, no one can claim to be ignorant and some stand is required. Talking about sharia’s abuses has to start somewhere– even if Maher thinks that somewhere is too small to count.
mortimer says
What is wrong with Maher? He has blasted Islam himself, but this is absolute nonsense to attack another fellow Leftard like this.
The Left knows VIRTUALLY NOTHING about Islam so all they can do is VIRTUE-SIGNAL, which is VIRTUALLY lacking in any virtue whatsoever. Their concern for human rights is commendable, but they need to learn more about Islam and its SUPREMACIST, DISCRIMINATORY doctrines. Islamic doctrines are decided by the CONSENSUS of ISLAM, and NOT by vote of the hoi-polloi.
Maher is a humorist. However, he understands neither banking nor the hotel business.
The sultan of Brunei is so mega-rich, he doesn’t care about any of them. The sultan is an old man and a former dissolute playboy who is now ‘CRAMMING FOR HIS FINALS’ (as they say) in order to gain brownie points from Allah by imposing strict Sharia over Brunei.
The sultan is now seriously religious … ISLAMICLY RELIGIOUS … with all the vicious cruelty that comes with being a SERIOUS, TURNED-ON MUSLIM. I would not be surprised if the sultan finances a jihad terror group. We should EXPECT IT and he SHOULD BE WATCHED.
Don’t people ‘get it’? This is ISLAM, Mr. Maher. Islam tramples human rights. Any call for human rights is a good call, because it calls attention to ISLAMIC DISCRIMINATION.
Clooney and Amal should be praised for condemning the ISLAMIC GENOCIDE against YEZIDIS.
Maybe they will eventually include the genocided Nigerian Christians in their concerns.

George Clooney is the biggest lying liberal hypocrite in Hollywood! And Bill Mahler calling him out is priceless! If BS was music, Clooney alone is a brass band! Hopefully he moves back to
England full time and takes his phony wife with him!!
Hollywood is as bad today as it was prior to World War II. It’s parallel to what Reagan fought against
back then with the SAG, and communism etc. A great book covering this history is “Hollywood Traitors” Blacklisted Screenwriters, Agents of Stalin, Allies of Hitler” by Allan H. Ryskind. An excellent historical read!
If you like history and the truth, get this book! Amazon has it. You won’t be disappointed!
God bless and save America!

Sharia is the lynch-pin of Islam. It is the ultimate goal of Muslim terrorists and moderates alike.
Every time the word Sharia is brought up in our political discourse, it should be accompanied by the words “stonings, amputations, the killing of apostates and blasphemers, the execution of gays”….and so on.
Discredit Sharia….expose it for the monstrous jurisprudence that it is,….make it radioactive, even if just in the West, and you short-circuit the agenda of CAIR and other Islamic-advocacy groups pushing for its gradual implementation.
K WAGNER says
Bill Maher is afraid of …yes scared of being labeled “Islamophobic”!
So instead he’s willing to support sharia
He believes “don’t hurt the hand that feeds you”!!!
He, himself must be a sharia loving, muslim supporting socialist PIG!!!!
mortimer says
Wagner, Maher has said that ‘Islam is the motherlode of bad ideas’. I don’t think he could be more adamant than that. He is critiquing the HIGH-CLASS, ineffectual slap on the wrist for the sultan. (Pooh, pooh, sultan, you cad, I shan’t stay at your 5-star hotels, you dastardly heathen!)
gravenimage says
True–but even a small gesture against barbarism is better than none.

I agree with both Maher and Clooney. They both deserve credit for this. Clooney deserves credit for starting down this road at all. A boycott spearheaded by Clooney is not just virtue-signaling. It could have a real effect and educate a lot of people about what is going on, and be the beginning of so much much more. But Maher, despite his mischaracterization of Clooney’s boycott as virtue-signaling, also deserves credit for saying that what Clooney calls for is not nearly enough and that more should be done. Both stories are quite good news.
gravenimage says
Agreed, Eduardo. Good analysis.
mortimer says
Completely agree with Cornelius. We should explain briefly why Sharia is wrong.
I include the word ‘DISCRIMINATORY’ whenever I write ‘SHARIA’ as in ‘DISCRIMINATORY SHARIA LAW’.
Franklin P. Uroda says
Under Muslim law, those folks being stoned are guilty of the crimes which carry such a punishment. For those of us, not subject to Muslim law, such punishments seem awful.
mortimer says
But, FPU, Sharia punishments may be carried out by vigilante mobs. If the governments are not responding, then local govt’s may take the law into their own hands.
gravenimage says
To decent people these punishments seem awful–because they *are* awful.

Jim Austin says
Much of the gay rights movement is leftist bait and switch.
The bait is equality and safety for gays, definitely a righteous goal.
Then the left switches 180 degrees to support the very opposite. They ally with a death cult that seeks to kill gays.
Leftist bait and switch.
CRUSADER says
“Green” New Deal is also a bait and switch trojan horse scheme for socialist/globalist power grab of policy mechanisms.
mortimer says
Agree with Jim Austin. The only freedom the Left is concerned about is sexual freedom, and then possibly, their own freedom of expression (but not yours).
The Red-Green Axis is an absurd alliance of opposites. Their common goal is to impose censorship.
I think Clooney, Amal and Maher have officially broken ranks with the Leftist party doctrine and become HERETICS.
It will be interesting to see if others follow them in recognizing Islam as the ENEMY OF SEXUAL FREEDOM … the biggest concern in the mind of Leftards.
Old Fat Bald Socially Inept Ron says
Hey Mr Clooney, don’t call for a boycott of hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei, doing so implies that the Sultan is terrible and needs to be punished.
Instead do something useful and intellectually honest that gets to the true root of the problem. Ask your high profile buddy Elton to collaborate on a public service announcement proclaiming that “Islam is terrible and needs to be exposed & abandoned.”
Beneath the Veil of Consciousness says
Maher is the same guy that said the Twin Tower terrorists were brave and courageous to have carried out their attack. His show was cancelled soon after. Sometimes Bill is insensitive to an appalling degree. We attended the same high school and grade together. At the time, he impressed me as very smart, but not so much intelligent. He was popular with the “in” crowd in high school, (if I remember correctly, he held a position in the student government), and seemed to carry himself with an air of priveledged arrogance. Let’s hope Bill can learn something from his latest social blunder and develop a little humility while he’s at it.
gravenimage says
Yes, Maher can be an arrogant jerk–but his is also pretty consistently Anti-Jihadist–that’s not a bad thing.
eduardo odraude says
Yes, Maher seems to see Islam as it is and he is willing to talk rather often in public venues about its totalitarian character — so for all his flaws, that makes him something of a hero. I don’t agree with many of his otherwise left-leaning biases, nor with his views about what can or should be done with respect to Islam. And I wonder that he does not seem to feel any cognitive dissonance in publicly critiquing Islam while simultaneously supporting the Democrats.
Wellington says
Maher’s fallacy here is that unless you fight evil everywhere, in this case Sharia, then you should fight it nowhere. You have to pick and choose your battles because you can’t fight every battle.
CRUSADER says
Raymond Ibrahim’s book “Sword and Scimitar” is all about particular battles which made differences…
thebigW says
Bill ain’t saying if you don’t fight sharia everywhere you shouldn’t fight it anywhere, he’s just saying be consistent. George Looney is a hypocrite like anyone who’s against something obvious like Brunai stoning gays, but doesn’t get out there and demand for example that Ilhan Omar’s gotta submit to interrogation. Course, I don’t think Bill himself is consistent on this either….
Wellington says
Query, the bigW: How is being consistent different from fighting everywhere? What if Clooney, whom I am no fan of like you, also called for boycotting Saudi Arabian investments but didn’t call for boycotting Qatar’s investments (and Qatar is very cozy with certain terrorist groups)? I trust you see my point and I don’t mean to be difficult, I just want to clarify matters.
Hope you are doing well. Take care.
thebigW says
well you don’t have to actually list all the countries to be consistent, you can just say you’re against all Sharia –which means you’re against all groups, all countries and all Muslims who support Sharia, and if someone brings up some Muzzie country you didn’t mention, all’s ya gotta do is say “Yup, I condemn that one too”. Them Clooney types are masters of selective outrage. Glad another liberal called him out on it.

I totally agree with Maher that Soddy Barbaria is the home of the problem called Islam. We should stop buying their damn oil which finances the terrorism and spreads the MENTAL VIRUS called Wahhabism which is actually no more than JIHADISM.
Wahhabism is JIHADISM and comes from Soddy Barbaria.

Anjuli Pandavar says
The sultan of Brunei is one of the richest men in the world, and his country is one of the richest. A boycott of his US and European hotels by those of his patrons who care about the judicial murder of Brunei’s gays, will not affect him one jot. However, while you may not be able to bankrupt a billionaire’s regime, you most certainly can shame it. What *might* get this self-styled iron man to relent is if openly gay couples, in very large numbers and as publicly affectionate is legal, book into all his hotels, and sue them for discrimination if they turn them away. And then go back to stay there again and again, putting all the fabulous pics on Facebook and sending them to the sultan of Brunei. That *might* just work.
gravenimage says
I doubt Brunei will relent.
The main thing such a boycott would do is expose this savagery of Islam–which I think is a good thing.
Rufolino says
Exactly Mortimer, in this instance publicity is a good thing.
If (or when) people see film of a gay man being stoned to death in Brunei, it will likely have a salutary effect.
peter says
What a brilliant idea except for the fact that a lot of gay couple themselves want to hide their identity even in USA
gravenimage says
Gays live openly in the US. Pretending they are in fear of being stoned to death is just ridiculous.
Dapto says
This is to be expected as Maher is a Nazi German name and this man supports ISIS and Hamas.
gravenimage says
Well, this is just absurd. Firstly, Maher’s name is not “Nazi German”–it is Irish. Then, having a German surname doesn’t mean you support the horrors of Islam–my own surname by marriage is German.
Then, despite his being dead wrong here, Maher has actually generally been *very* critical of Islam.
David M says
George Clooney has called for a boycott of hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei. That’s good, but George is also married to a Muslim woman. Sharia law is just Islamic law. He wants it both ways, by marrying a Muslim he gives de facto recognition to Islam, but he doesn’t like Islam in practice, which is sharia law. So which is it George, is Islam ok as per marrying a Muslim, or is it not ok when you see Islam in practice with these barbaric sharia practices?
David M says
Actually I just read that Amal Clooney is not a Muslim herself, despite her parents being Muslim. George says his wife is not religious at all. So I take back by comment on George, & we should all boycott these hotels as per his request.
Dachlan says
Yes I agree with these two men. While boycoting Sultan Brunei hotels, we must go after Saudi Arabia.

“Virtue-signaling”: Bill Maher blasts George Clooney’s call to boycott Brunei-owned hotels over stoning of gays

Well, this is depressing–Maher is usually pretty sane on Islam, but Clooney is right here.
And while Maher is correct that it is better to be completely consistent, I am not going to condemn anyone standing up against the horrors of Islam.

Joe Biden gets racked over the feminist coals for a hug, a squeeze to another human but seems to be aware of sharia law’s brutality to the LGBT community. Amazing for a democrat to speak out and have the courage to do so… so why are hugs forbidden, but Islamic sharia law gets protected, Joe gets slammed for his concern and he is seen as an Islamophobe by the Dems , media and strangely muslims. I guess same could be said that George is aware, which is a surprise.

He’s not as committed to his leftopathy as most, but is still pretty bad.
I’m surprised Clooney actually grew a bit of a spine – probably his wife’s doing.

As far as I could remember Maher is consistently opposed to the law firm of “Mohamed Mohamed and Mohamed ” As far as Clooney is concerned, his wife is not probably too fond of law firm of “Mohamed,Mohamed and Mohamed” as a competition !
