And your point is…???
Freedom of Speech gives us the right to offend but to gratuitously offend for the sake of offending certainly goes against the spirit of this most basic right.
confiteor says
Mo’ , if he ever existed, is dead and so cannot be offended.
And yet Mo’ , although dead, is himself extremely offensive by the proxy
of his insane followers who now saturate the West. Everyday the news is about Islam, about the whinging demands of muslims for their right of freedom to practise their religion in our plural societies -an absurd demand from a theocratic, medieval religion organised down the centuries by overwhelming violence and rigid intolerance towards so-called infidels.
Humor is an excellent and civilised response to the dour demands of the hijabis and the bearded who are now everywhere making the West grey and forlorn.
This humor is especially wonderful, and particularly ironic, because, as the Ayatollah glooming intoned, “There are no jokes in Islam” -ha ha ha ha ha ha…

What claptrap. The idea that being allowed to exercise freedom of speech is “gratuitous offense” is just appalling.
This demand that Infidels submit to Shari’ah law by not “offending” Muslims by daring to draw Mohammad cartoons is sickening–and rejected by those who stand against Jihad and Shari’ah.
Moreover, almost every Mohammad cartoon is critical of his actions–the idea that criticizing pedophilia, piracy, slavery, rape, and mass murder is “gratuitous” is disgusting.
Here is my cartoon criticizing the “Prophet’s” rape of little nine-year-old Aisha. Is this “gratuitous” as well? *Ugh*.

Well said!
These kinds of objections to very good critiques of Islam are perhaps the most repugnant attacks upon freedom of speech I have ever seen.
They involve an attempt at self-righteousness, but clearly reveal a smug knee jerk ignorance and naive acceptance of propaganda.

Here’s a quote that supplies some context for this conversation:
“My Name is Bosch and I’m a Recovered Muslim
….that is, if Muslims don’t kill me for leaving Islam, which it requires them to do. That’s just one of the reasons I’ve been writing and drawing against Islam and its Jihad for a number of years now. But fortunately for us, Islam hasn’t been able to make every Muslim its slave, just as Nazism wasn’t able to turn every German into a Nazi.”

Bosch Fawstin is under constant death threats, both as an apostate and as a Mohammed cartoonist.
Check out his book “Peaceful Death Threats”, which is alarming, disgusting, and–thank’s to Fawstin’s talent–also extremely entertaining:

“Freedom of Speech gives us the right to offend but to gratuitously offend for the sake of offending certainly goes against the spirit of this most basic right.”
GI already gave a great response to this! I want to add something. I am against harassment and not every “venue” is appropriate to exercise free speech. With that I mean that in the public space, on the streets, in restaurants etc, people should not be accosted with offensive remarks. At the workplace, colleagues and visitors should be left alone, I suppose.
But when it comes to the media, books, comics, internet, tv, all sorts of publications I say; even if people are offending only out of malice, LET THEM! This does not go against any spirit, because the offended people can avoid this, turn off the TV etc, and of course can respond with just as withering insults.
I’d say Bosch Fawstein has plenty of legitimate motive for ridiculing Mohammed. But even if he hadn’t fair motive he has every right to be as vicious as he can. The sharp “border” of freedom of speech is incitement to violence.
But no one, no group, has the right “not to be insulted”. The law does protect bodies from harm, but not HURT FEELINGS.
And to me that is only just. Especially when religions, ideologies, ideas are ridiculed and BLAMED. ALL OF THEM. Especially because there is plenty of PRAISE and propaganda and support for religions, ideologies, many ideas, from its adherents, allies and apologists. And there should not just be Praise, there should be balance between Praise and Blame. Only in that way, in the end, can religions compete in a fair way and the best ideas win. Impeding freedom of speech, esp. hatespeech, really is impeding progress and justice.

Islam is at war w/ the West since the 7th century and continues unabated to this day. We mocked Hitler and Emperor Hirohito…nothing wrong w/ gratuitous mocking of the leader of a fascist ideology. It’s interesting that the 1st amendment that allows “freedom of religion” (which unfortunately includes Islam even though “religion” is certainly a misnomer for fascistic, terroristic Islam) but that same amendment gives us freedom of expression…but somehow criticism and mockery of said “religion” should be curtailed so as not to “offend” that phony “religion?” Who says?
gravenimage says
Spot on, Patrolitz. Our mocking of Hitler and Mussolini and Tojo was deserved and anything but gratuitous.

I’m looking for an e-book version, but can’t seem to find it for the Muhammad cartoons. I have your entire Infidel series at Comixlogy. I don’t like getting hard copies. Electronic copies collect much less dust.

Unbelievably, it is still popular to repudiate the efforts of such criticisms as Fawtin presents without the least bit of acknowledgment that such truthful illuminations of Islam put the author at very real risk to his life — that these people who heap ridicule and scorn on such efforts, as ‘provocation’, don’t acknowledge nor own up to the damage they do him and society. It is criminal if not treasonous. And they should be subject to charges of slander.
Regrettably the forces of evil, lies, misinformation on our enemy Islam’s behalf are making more progress in limiting the ability for truthful discourse to be disseminated.

Who’s selling out Freedom Of Speech? At no time have I suggested, nor shall I in the future, that any such cartoons be banned. You certainly have the right to “offend for the sake of offending” and I would not restrict it in any way. I just think it’s a tad childish, accomplishes nothing and is outside the spirit of the right to Freedom of Speech. BUT I wouldn’t deny you, or any other cartoonist, the right to publish them.
If someone publishes a cartoon book depicting Christ or Hassidic Jews in a way as to be offensive to Christians or Jews and for no other purpose than to be offensive I would make the same observations.
The purpose, I believe, of Robert Spencer’s cartoon contest in Texas a few years ago was to assert his right to Freedom of Speech and expression and that I wholeheartedly supported it Although it was clearly going to offend muslims that was not its purpose. Hence it was not “gratuitous”.
Charlie Hebdo, as I understand (or misunderstand it) was shooting at every religion within sight. Most of the cartoons were pretty tasteless to say the least. But at no time have I even suggested that they should have been stopped and I found the insanely vicious and horrendous attack to be totally unjustified and wholly barbaric.
Also, I have no use for sharia law other than as manure and in no way should my comments suggest support of it.
My comment on barbarism was somewhat of a non sequitur and I apologize if it appears that I was equating your cartoons with truly barbaric behavior.
Rarely says
Also, about “”respect”. My comments have absolutely NOTHING to do with respecting islam or sharia law. “Respect” is not a “right” but something to be earned and they certainly have not done so. In fact, for them to gain any respect is a very steep uphill battle.

Of course, Jews and Christians are not threatening people who do so. It was not Jews or Christians who slaughtered staff at Charlie Hebdo–that would be Muslims. There are no laws where their is the death penalty for offending Jews or Christians.

Here is his winning entry:

So is this new book of Mohammad cartoons.

David Wood is awesome…
I…really DO hope his English friend, the esteemed Journalist, “Miles Cowperthwaite” {BBC panodrama}makes an appearance again.
It is simply amazing how much he looks like David..
I listen to Christian Prince on YT too:someone who knows all about islam and speaks the language.
The usual muslim tricks too are to be seen when phoning in:shouting, heavy breathing, loud blaring noises…it really is pathetic. It makes me laugh when CP points out all the errors and illogicalities wriitten in Arabic in the koran, especially to some pakistani muslim who only knows Urdu and not Arabic.
The same tactics are used by the Dawa teams against Christians:usually a bunch of islamic heavies loitering about with their easily identified {and silly} islamic beards:pushing,shouting,laughing,heckling..
The “You don’t know Arabic” Trick:This won’t work with Arabic speaking ex-muslim Atheists,Christian Arabs or anyone who grew up in an Arabic speaking environment. The Dawa folk don’t like Arab speakers who know all about the nonsense in the koran:they depend on non-muslims NOT knowing Arabic.Take along an Arabic speaker with you if you go to deal with these Dawa dissemblers.
The “Whataboutery Trick”:What about Leviticus x verse y..?…Samson in the temple..ya see?The Jews invented Suicide Bombers!….bad christians{yes of course there are but the Gospel CONDEMNS bad behavior by christians unlike allah’s koran which preaches disobedience to God’s exodus 20 laws and HATRED instead of love}
muslims shouldn’t really be attacking the Bible anyway:koran 10:94.
Amazingly,.Al-lah tells muhammed to consult those who know the Bible.
Also, muslims must not attack the Gospel koran 5 v46-47.In fact they are to be condemned according to allah.Muslims will say the Bible was corrupted:NOT according to allah when the koran was written k3:3!
ALWAYS remember that the Dawa teams depend on Christians not knowing the truth when they say
Jesus said “Lo!I am the slave of allah”{koran 19:29-30}:that alleged statement comes from a newborn TALKING INFANT.In the koran ,Jesus the Aramaic-speaking Jew becomes Issa the Arabic speaking muslim:ludicrous!

This book of cartoons is proof that moslims do not control everything…some things are beyond their evil control.
To know that there is something they don’t like, but cannot change, causes at least a little smile for those who abhor islam.
