History has a notorious Islamophobic bias. The only way to get rid of Islamphobia is to dispose of history entirely.
That’s a difficult challenge. Censorship is a lot easier.
An American art museum is demanding that a German far-right party stop using one of its paintings, portraying a 19th-century slave auction, in a campaign poster for the European elections.
“We are strongly opposed to the use of this work to advance any political agenda,” Olivier Meslay, the director of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, told The Associated Press. “We did not supply the painting to the AfD,” he said, using the acronym for the party Alternative for Germany.
The 1866 oil-on-canvas painting “Slave Market,” by Jean-Leon Gerome, shows a black, apparently Muslim slave trader displaying a naked young woman with much lighter skin to a group of men for examination.
The AfD’s Berlin branch said they put up 30 posters of the painting across the German capital with the slogan: “So that Europe won’t become Eurabia.”
The party, known for its anti-Muslim stance, said it won’t take down any of the posters.
The Clark Art Institute owns the painting because Sterling Clark, a man its current staff don’t seem to like very much once bought it. It doesn’t own the rights to it.
So it has no legal authority to do anything.
The painting, and some of Gerome’s other work, were clearly meant to depict the dehumanizing qualities of slavery. While most viewers focus in on the woman in the painting, it also depicts an African man being examined and forced into slavery.
The Islamic slave trade was conducted in both Africans and Europeans.
Finally, Gerome was both an artist and a scholar. The painting is set in an actual place in Cairo. It’s unknown whether the artist personally observed the slave trade, but it’s likely that he did. And the trade continued for much longer than most people care to realize. In some Muslim countries, it continues today.
The Cairo setting is an important reminder that Egypt was a major gateway for the African slave trade. Censoring the painting won’t banish that truth.

The attack was the largest by Barbary pirates on either Ireland or Great Britain.”

Smithsonian Portrait Gallery in Washington DC has had this on display:
https://www.si.edu/newsdesk/releases/portrait-yarrow-mamout-view-national-portrait-gallery
Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection exhibition “American Origins.”
Yarrow Mamout’s portrait and story will be added to the space. Mamout, an African American Muslim man and former slave, was portrayed by James Alexander Simpson in 1822. The portrait will be on view through August 2019.
“The Portrait Gallery has collaborated with the District of Columbia Library in Georgetown in order to pay tribute to an enslaved man who overcame great odds,” said Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery. “His portrait reminds us that Muslims have been a part of the fabric of this nation since the beginning.”
Born in Guinea in West Africa, Mamout (c. 1736–1823) was enslaved at age 16. Accounts report that he was educated, as he could read and write in Arabic before his capture, and once he came to the U.S. he learned to speak English. In America, he was sold to Samuel Beall in Takoma Park, MD., and was later inherited by Beall’s son and brought to Georgetown.
Mamout was freed at age 60. He chose to remain in Georgetown, where he became known for his work as a brick maker, basket weaver and more—a jack-of-all-trades. After saving his earnings and purchasing stock at the Columbia Bank of Georgetown, Mamout bought a property on Dent Place. In 2015, this property was excavated to learn more about Mamout’s history.
This portrait by Simpson is a respectful depiction of an African American Muslim man at a time when there were nearly 6,400 slaves in Washington. Free blacks were at constant risk of being jailed or sold into slavery if unable to prove their free status by showing a certificate. In the portrait, Mamout wears a hat that could be a kufi, traditionally worn by African Muslim men in recognition of their religion or African identity. Whereas many historical portraits show figures wearing Western attire, such as the museum’s portrait of Pocahontas, Simpson’s portrayal illustrates a rare instance in which a subject had the freedom to assert his cultural heritage.
This portrait is on loan from the District of Columbia Library, Peabody Room, Georgetown Branch.

The Muslims were enslaving people from all around the Mediterranean for a thousand years before the US was formed. It was Wilberforce in Britain and Lincoln in the US who eventually put an end to the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
It might be too late now to stop the Islamisation of many places in Europe without a lot of bloodshed. As Bat Ye’or pointed out in her book ‘Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis’, the socialists in the EU (mainly the French) agreed decades ago to allow Muslim immigrants into Europe, because they wanted cheap labour for a United States of Europe; and to support the Palestinians and oppose the USA. And in their Euro-Arab Dialogue (EAD), these immigrants were to be given the same rights as the native Europeans. The leaders of Europe were traitors to their own people – and still are!

That went on well into the 90s and in the US too…procurement of children and thus kidnapping, agonized families never seeing their daughters (and also young boys) again. I came across a website that explained all this and had some pictures of those involved which included a British politician. Under the Bill Clinton administration this was knowingly happening. Saudi Arabia’s handlers on the US knew. Some came from the missing persons and crazily enough KSA then donated money to the national missing persons organization. I don’t have the information. It goes along with some visiting Saudis who partied in the US and got young girls and boys sent to them for fun-teenagers. Flagrantly Violating sharia law. It’s very ugly information and no doubt true. When they tired of some girls they were cast away, to quote, probably dropped out of a plane over the Rub’a Kali Empty Quarter desert. Explained one woman-it’s their culture.
So, I’m not surprised you were told that in the 70s except it kept on going and probably to this day. Two girls were saved in Egypt in the 90s by luck. People kidnapped. The contempt some Saudis had was calling our ambassadors “blue-eyed slaves.” Americans should know the many ways we were screwed over and the perversity involved. Perhaps that’s why some men convert to Islam…because of the lust and perversity contained therein…might be for some because some American men have been seen in Thailand paying for sex with as young as 8 year olds the poor parents selling out their daughters.
If you wonder where some “runaways” ended up, sex trafficking is one good guess.

Muslims trying to claim the moral high ground when they & their “Religion” are morally bankrupt & they know it. Some like 125Million souls they openly enslaved. In 19th.Century Africa & India what stopped them was the expansion of British Adventurism. [In Africa it was initially the British Missionaries]. The last slave market to close in Saudi Arabia was in 1961 at the urging of the UN. However, the Sex Slave Markets are reopening in Mauritania. Why the pretence from our political ‘Leaders’ & Mainstream Media? At least one would think the Free Press would “like to print the Truth”, or perhaps the “Truth” won’t sell newspapers or boost TV Station viewership, & therefore advertising space. Perhaps they’re waiting for the Slave Markets to reopen in Galveston, New Orleans, Europe etc.

SFWhite says
Our first formal U.S. military force, the Navy, was formed to fight the Barbary Pirates, who were what Jefferson called “Musselmen” (Muslims), who were attacking shipping lanes, taking cargo and killing or capturing and enslaving the crews of ships from all countries. Both the cargo and the ships’ crews were considered by the Muslim pirates to be “booty”, a spoil of conquest, a Muslim tradition. ALL non-Muslim countries, including America, plying shipping lanes in the Mediterranean were targets of the Barbary Pirates.
That first American naval force was nicknamed “The Leathernecks”, that’s right, the Marines were our first naval force. “From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli,” Tripoli was a Muslim city on the north African shore of the Mediterranean. The Marines were called Leathernecks because they wore wide straps of thick saddle leather around their necks to prevent the Muslim raiders from cutting off their heads during the heat of battle.
At first, hoping to end the war peacefully, America tried to pay the jizya, a tribute the Quran mandated to be paid by Christians and Jews (that was later extended to all non-Muslims) which put our country into debt. The Muslims didn’t honor the agreement, kept raising the agreed upon jizya amount and attacking or ships anyway.
What Muslims are doing around the world today isn’t new, and it’s certainly not “radicalized”, it’s their SOP, how Muslims took over every country they ever entered. The Muslims have been trying to wipe out Christianity and Judaism from shortly after the conception of their religion, when they took over Medina and Mohammed reformulated the dictates of Islam. In turn, America has been fighting for our lives against Muslims for almost the entirety of our country’s existence.

And Jean-Léon Gérôme did indeed visit Muslim lands–including Turkey, Egypt, Syria, and what is today Israel and was then under Muslim conquest.
Here is what a contemporary had to say about this piece:
Maxime Du Camp, who had travelled extensively in the Near East, reviewed the painting from the 1867 Salon. He located the motif to Cairo’s slave market and described the painting as “a scene done on the spot”. Du Camp wrote:
“It is one of these [more expensive] women, an Abyssinian, that M. Gérôme has taken as the principal figure of his composition. She is nude and being displayed by the djellab, who has the fine head of a brigand accustomed to every sort of abduction and violence; the idea of the eternal soul must not very often have tormented such a bandit. The poor girl is standing, submissive, humble, resigned, with a fatalistic passivity that the painter has very skillfully rendered”.
Note that Du Camp was a photographer.
