I’m never in favor of burning books. It was the Nazis who made the practice famous, and emulating the Nazis is never a good idea. Also, the Left today is engaged in a large-scale effort to silence perspectives that dissent from their own, and that insidious effort could mean the total destruction of free societies. The antidote to bad speech is not the shutdown of the offensive speech, but more speech: discussion and debate, which generally Leftists and Islamic spokesmen shy away from, because they know their positions are intellectually weak and that they would not be able to win a debate.
Also, I believe it is important to know the beliefs and understand the ideology of those who are making war against free societies. People should not burn, but read and understand, the Qur’an.
This incident, however, took place in shattered, staggering, dhimmi Britain. Would Frankie Rufolo be under fire and have been reported to police if he had burned a Bible? What do you think?
“Election candidate, 19, set fire to Quran in Exeter pub during heated debate,” by Alex Richards, Devon Live, April 13, 2019 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):
An ‘atheist activist’ standing for election in Exeter shocked punters at a city pub by setting a copy of the Quran on fire.
The incident, condemned by city leaders, happened at a heated ‘after party’ in the Old Fire House pub following Katie Hopkins’ visit to the University of Exeter – where he had been handing out flyers.
Frankie Rufolo, 19, admits the inflammatory and offensive act and has been left to question whether it was a step too far, even for him.
The copy of the Quran, the central religious book of Islam, was burned with a candle during a heated political debate….
Mr Rufolo, currently campaigning to be a councillor in St Thomas representing the ‘For Britain Movement’, explained: “It was 90 per cent white, left wingers and even some right wingers.
“They were saying all the usual rubbish and it descended into nonsense. I was holding up the Quran and calling it evil.
“They were defending Shamima Begum and effectively calling me a racist.
“I lost my patience a bit, this was after a long night, and it was just to make a point that I am not afraid to say what I think.
“I see Islam as a threat to freedom of speech in this country.
“You need to do something ‘out there’ and provocative, I do lose patience when some people are defensive of a religion which is oppressive.”
When questioned by Devon Live on whether he thinks any point he wished to make has been over-ridden by his actions, he answered: “You do have to be outspoken sometimes. Obviously some stuff can be counter productive.
“I will have a think about whether it was counter productive.”
The Quran which was burned is owned by Mr Rufolo, who says he carries it in his bag wherever he goes and can even “recite passages from memory.”
Mr Rufolo, who has lived in Exeter all his life, said: “It is no secret that I am critical of Islam as an ideology in particular. Some people will want to demonise me because of that.”
He says he is not associated with the Far Right, despite his beliefs about religion: “To be clear I describe myself as an Atheist activist. I dislike religious ideas but I find many religious people to be nice.
“Being an LGBT atheist the Quran says a lot worse about me than I can say about it. It is my private property and I can do with it what I like.
“I criticise the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, which some believe contains Mormon ideology, but it doesn’t mean I hate all teenagers that are fans of it.
“I meet people in Exeter who are gay and ex Muslims, it is sad how casually their family now hate them. We’re demonised and called bigots and far right all time, but I am trying to give minorities within minorities a voice.”…
He was recently reported to police following an incident where he labelled the Quran a ‘book of evil’ at a debating society event at Wetherspoons pub The Imperial.
The case was later dropped by those offended by his remarks, thought to have been university students at the debating event.
“A lot of University of Exeter students have gone on to be politicians and I am quite worried about people in cabinet being dead against free speech.
“At the end of the day offence is subjective, this is a free country and if you want to live here you have to live with being offended sometimes. I see Muslims as equals so I expect them to live with offence as I do. ”
He says he is also vocally against branches of Christianity, including Catholicism and the Church of England….
MP Ben Bradshaw said: “Exeter is a friendly and tolerant city and there should be no place here for hateful, racist or islamophobic behaviour of this kind.”…
Walter Sieruk says
It’s far better to expose the many errors of the Quran than to burn that religious book.
So since the very foundation of and for Islam is the Quran ,this leads to very important question: “Is the Quran the Word of God or is it a fabrication of a man. Thus, is the Quran the truth or a fiction and a hoax ?” The answer is clearly given on pages 145 through 157 in THE ISLAMIC INVASION by Robert Morey in which he wrote a section on the Quran with its self-contradictions. Just two of the many he cited are the following “The Quran differs on whether a day is a thousand years or fifty thousand years in God’s sight’ and “Who was first to believe? Abraham or Moses [Sura 6:14 versus 7:143]? The above is inconsistent and illogical. Further, Morey wrote about “The fact that Judaism and Christianity broke up into different sects was used in the Quran to prove that they are not of God [Suras 30:20-32. 42:13, 14]. Yet Islam has broken up into many warring sects and therefore cannot be true if the Quran is right.” Moreover, Morey in his book shows many more contradictions and absurdities in the Quran, there are and how Muhammad incorporated extra Biblical and Jewish folklore along with pre-Islamic Arabian myth and parts of Zoroastrian and Hindu stories into the Quran. Furthermore, the Muslims claim that “the Quran is the direct, literal word of God unmodified in any way by the Prophet who uttered them at the bidding of God.” Nevertheless, in the book UNVEILING ISLAM by Ergun Mehmet Caner and Eethi Caner has shown that the Quran was modified in the following account on pages 45. “Muhammad felt the need to improve on the words of Allah, since he changed Allah’s wisdom for his own on several occasions. A hadith tells of the nonchalant emendations of Muhammad:’ On a number of occasions he [a scribe] had, with the Prophet’s consent changed the closing words of verses. For example, when the prophet had said ‘God is mighty and wise ‘ Adbollah b. Abi Sarh suggested writing down ‘Knowing and wise’ and the Prophet answered that there was no objection. Having observed a succession of changes of this type, Adbollah renounced Islam on the grounds that revelations, if from God could not be changed at the prompting of a scribe such as himself. After his apostasy he went to Mecca and joined the Qorayshites.’ Other writers reveal that later Muhammad and his people did go war with the Qorayshites and he personally killed Abdollah. Obviously Abdollah knew too much and Muhammad wanted Abdollah’s knowledge to die with him.” In conclusion, the Quran is not only a fiction, it’s also a hoax.
Even though the above essay was posted before, it should now be added that the last statement of the above that “the Quran is not only a fiction, it’s also a hoax.” To put this in a Biblical way. As in from the Bible, it may be truly explained that the Quran is a deceptive work of “the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.” Ephesians 14:12.. [N.I.V.]

The best alternative to burning flags is to scrub them publicly, on a sidewalk for instance, to symbolically cleanse the places, persons, or things they represent of what besmirches them. Bonus: cleaner sidewalk, if you do it right.
I’m sure there’s some similar non-combustive way to deal with your own copy of a book the contents of which disgust you. I’ve seen some remarkable drawings for sale done on pages of old books, for instance. But ultimately, paper is paper and there are many ways to turn the bad to the good– in the end, it can be composted.

“I’m never in favor of burning books.”
While I understand that point, this candidate/debater did it to make his point which, among others, is that there is nothing beyond dispute or discussion, most particularly the ideas that undergird Islam.
What’s more, he burned his own Qur’an, and among the freedoms we have is the right to dispose of your property as you see fit. In the case of the Nazis, they burned the property of others, not their own.

He was showing his contempt for the Koran … fair enough. I don’t like the burning of any book.
The Koran can be excoriated with words sufficiently.
THE KORAN is: a troop motivator, a Machiavellian hoax concocted by Arab dictators for the benefit of their own emolument and power, a plagiarized text that is self-referentially incoherent, ungrammatical, illogical and unhistorical, incomprehensible in the original text, a racist manifesto of hatred towards non-Arabs, a solicitation of murder, an anti-Semitic hate text, an anti-Christian death warrant, an extortionist’s manual, a justification for slavery, pedophilia, polygamy, rape and violence against women. The Koran appears to be the rantings of a schizophrenic. There isn’t a single useful idea in it, and much that is in it is obviously erroneous, stupid and morally repugnant. It preaches implacable hatred and endless world war against non-Muslims until victory. So long as there is this book, there will be no peace in the world. The viciousness of the Koran cannot be edited out of it for it is alleged to be the perfect, complete and eternal words of Allah, even though these words are absurd, irrational and amoral.

There is so much information and explanation in this statement. Wow! You know so much Mortimer! I think you referred to Abd Al Malik, caliph 685-705, who rather “formalized” Islam. As explained in Roberts book “Did Muhammed Exist?” Which was fascinating and corroborated by Tom Hollands book about Islam’s origins. Jay Smith on youtube also explains these origins very well. He says: “Attack the man and the book” but, but, not out of spite, but especially to let the truth be known. And let Islam really, on the basis of truth, compete with other religions or beliefs for the adherence of men.
In this context; Mortimer, the “book” may continue to exist, in museums perhaps, but it is our hope that in future ever more Muslims leave their faith, until Islam is a small manageable cult.
Demsci says
Rather for the adherence of man (kind).
Demsci says
In your excellent “summary/ review” you point out the flaws of the Quran. These are exacerbated by the Sira and Hadiths. Perhaps we could say that the whole of the sacred texts, which are a finite identifiable collection, the trilogy, are a mess.
Now, we can recognize that Muslims are mostly fine humans, of which Islam is only one aspect.
As to these core or sacred texts; the Muslims have as tenet that they are Divine and clear, in a good way.
Now we as critics can go 2 ways; 1. Islam is clear but in a bad dangerousway. 2. Islam is unclear, but precisely because of that also dangerous, because prone to violent anti democratic interpretation.
Position 1 affirms Muslims belief in clarity of core texts and thus some respect for them.
Position 2 is like your post, it has contempt for their low level of clarity, consistency, with its mistakes etc.
and moreover it acknowledges that even if the core texts were uniformly understandable in the same way, still interpretation of them by many-faceted different Muslims in different lands must vary. Like in “if the texts are PREscriptive or now only DEscriptive”. And it is important to note that this UMMAH has no authoritative leadership about interpretations.
It argues that Islam is useless for Muslims and mankind, unworthy of any God. A Hoax with its promise of Heaven. And in 2nd place dangerous because of interpretations all over the place (of the core texts), including those which incite to violence and lead to anti-democratic positions..

Exustiolibrorum, burning of books, plays into Muslim hands. Instead, Mr. Rufolo could have read aloud Qur’anic verses, s-l-o-w-l-y. E.g., 2:191-193, 3:151,4:34, 4:89, 5:33, 8:12, 8:60, 9:5, 9:29, 47:4, 98:6. Much more effective.
Hugh Fitzgerald says
Though I enjoy making up words — my hapax legomena have been etched on walls in twenty-seven countries — exustiolibrorum was perhaps a jape too far. So, on second thought, I think “exustio librorum” is better.
Now back to the matter at hand: How Best To Handle The Qur’an. I suggest reading it, straight through, accompanied by Robert Spencer’s Blogging the Qur’an, then reading it again, then reading it to find the 120 verses that are especially disturbing, then reading those verses aloud to all and sundry..

As an American member & enthusiastic supporter of the For Britain party, I have mixed feelings about this candidate burning a Qur’an.
On the Not-So-Great side of the ledger: 1) It MIGHT have a net/overall negative effect for the For Britain party, and for the anti-Islam movement in general. 2) I’m generally not too keen on the idea of book-burning. 3) As others have stated, reading & quoting from the Qur’an might be more effective.
On the other hand… 1) Frankie Rufolo probably did plenty of reading & quoting from the Qur’an, before he lit this one up. 2) This incident has no doubt raised public awareness of the For Britain party – which gets ignored by the mainstream media (except when it’s being vilified) and denied public venues, etc. 3) At this point, plenty of patriotic Brits (and potential For Britain supporters elsewhere) probably have no problem with someone burning this particular book. 5) The act of publicly burning a Qur’an is a bold one; and we need far more boldness in the global resistance to Islam. And 6) Torching a Qur’an must be pretty satisfying, since it pisses off Muslims so VERY much. And they’ve surely got it coming.
BTW: I’m very impressed by the fact that this anti-Islam activist & political candidate is only 19 years old. If only I had been that aware & on the ball at 19! Or at 29, for that matter.

On the 25th year of the hijra (647), During the Caliphate of Uthman, many Muslims in different regions were arguing that they can recite the Qur’an better, and they had differences between them.
Upon hearing this, Caliph Uthman is said to have ordered the burning of both fragmentary manuscripts and whole copies of the Qur’an[9] and sent a message to Hafsa, one of Muhammad’s wives, requesting the manuscripts she had in her possession. Making a codex from what Zayd bin Thabit had originally compiled. He then issued it. No doubt he is MORE opposed to Islam than to Christianity — for the same reasons as many other godless foes of Islam, myself included. And, in his case, there’s the additional threat of being murdered by homophobic Muslims, which I’m sure he’s aware of.
Although some of the more politically correct atheists still defend Islam & Muslims for some perverse reason, fortunately there are some non-religious types — both progressives & conservatives — who see Islam for what it is: a religious/ political/ legal & cultural system that promotes medieval barbarism & savagery, and poses a grave threat to human rights, free societies, & women’s fashion. Those people probably won’t show up at your church barbeque; but they do have your back when dealing with the Muslim enemy.
From my own perspective, I can sum it up like this: I’d like to see more Christians learn to be skeptical of religious faith, of their own accord, just as I did myself. That’s it. That’s all. On the other hand, I’d like to see all Muslims expelled from the West at gunpoint. Islam poses a unique threat, and requires a unique solution.

Robert is being diplomatic here, but he is entirely correct. Burning the Qur’an does nothing to offset the affect of Islam globally. It is truly an affliction, a historical plague on the world. This chap espouses that he burned the Qur’an because it is so “intolerant”, because he can recite it from memory based on his extensive exegesis of the war doctrine. Islamic doctrine needs to be read, explored, examined and critically commented on. Not burned.
I don’t believe him. Do you? Rufalo appears to be in his salad days, espousing talking points to support a political agenda. Given the current state of the dead western European continent, (eastern Europe is improving, albeit at an apparent glacial pace), and assuming on face value that he indeed studied the doctrine of Islam, the collective trinity of abject evil in the Qur’an, Hadith and Sira, burning a portion of the doctrine seems on its face as a perfectly reasonable response to the horror of the revelation of actually reading Islam’s plan contextually, as a whole. Any sentient non-Muslim should, and would be, horrified. But is is indeed a mistake. Islamic doctrine, as supported by the abhorrent actions of Muslims world-wide needs to be exposed and documented, and the correlation by historical and modern day Islam, not burned.
That was the purpose of Jihad Watch, post 9-11. I personally owe an debt of gratitude I cannot repay to Robert in this regard. Hugh is certainly no slouch either. He emboldens the atheist principle who can, did, and will continue to avoid the normative trappings of religious moral equivalency inherent in atheists. The nom de plume will continue to identify the unique threat that Islam poses to our existence. For that, my gratitude is also offered without hesitation.
