“The University of Aberdeen has revoked the Sultan of Brunei’s honorary degree in protest against the introduction of severe anti-LGBT laws,” laws that mandate that gays be stoned to death, among other harsh Sharia punishments such as amputation for theft.
Here’s a revealing statement by the University of Aberdeen principal George Boyne: “the Sultan’s introduction of the new penal code is contrary to the institution’s ‘strong commitment to the value of diversity and inclusion.’”
Boyne has in effect revoked Sultan Hassanal Bokiah’s degree because of the Sultan’s commitment to be “more Islamic.” No religion is more opposed to genuine diversity and inclusion than normative Islam, which hails the supremacist and abusive Sharia to as divine law. The Sultan of Brunei has in fact called for “stronger Islamic teachings” and he is certainly far from unique as a committed Sharia enforcer. What does the University of Aberdeen think of Saudi Arabia? Iran? Pakistan? Sudan?

It comes amid an international outcry over the nation’s new Islamic criminal laws punishing gay sex by stoning offenders to death.
University of Aberdeen principal George Boyne said the Sultan’s introduction of the new penal code is contrary to the institution’s “strong commitment to the value of diversity and inclusion”.
