Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Turkey 1894-1924: “Deliberate, state-engineered genocide aided by Muslim clerics and the Muslim-majority population”

Jul 20, 2019 9:00 am By Robert Spencer

“The Turks and their helpers murdered, straightforwardly or indirectly, through privation and disease, between 1.5 and 2.5 million Christians between 1894 and 1924.”

And the Turks still deny that they did it. Disinformation and ignorance continue to cloud this issue. Even in this article, Kemal Ataturk refers to himself as a “mujahid,” that is, a jihadi, and the word is translated as “crusader.” The jihadis fought against the cross and Christianity. They were in no sense “crusaders,” and it is sloppy thinking and sloppy writing to apply the word to them, as if religious violence ultimately derived from Christianity. See The History of Jihad from Muhammad to ISIS for the truth about 1,400 years of jihad activity, including the genocide of Anatolia’s Christians.

“Book review: The genocide of Anatolia’s Christians,” by Benjamin Weinthal, Jerusalem Post, July 17, 2019:

Israeli historians Benny Morris and Dror Ze’evi have produced a work that shocks the conscience with their forensic study of the exterminatory violence committed during the final stage of the Ottoman Empire and the lead-up to the nascent phase of the Turkish Republic.

In contrast to scholarship that has largely focused on the World War I Ottoman extermination of Anatolia’s Armenian population, The Thirty-Year Genocide: Turkey’s Destruction of its Christian Minorities, 1894–1924 broadens that time frame to study other persecuted Christian minority groups, particularly Greeks and Assyrians.

An important lesson from this masterful history concerns the role that Islamic-animated genocide played in the destruction of the region’s Christians. Morris and Ze’evi marshal no shortage of evidence.

Take the example of one sheik who, according to the British diplomat in Turkey Gerald Fitzmaurice, “ordered his followers to bring as many stalwart young Armenians as they could find. To the number of about 100 they were thrown on their backs and held down by their hands and feet, while the sheik, with a combination of fanaticism and cruelty proceeded, while reciting verses of the Koran, to cut their throats after the Mecca rite of sacrificing sheep.” This massacre unfolded during a savage period of widespread targeting of Armenians that extended from 1894 to 1896.

The book abounds with examples of Islamic ideology being combined with state directives to promote the extermination of Middle Eastern Christians. It is not a historical study for the faint of heart.

The authors conclude that what happened was deliberate, state-engineered genocide aided by Muslim clerics and the Muslim-majority population. They base their conclusion on “the massive documentation – American, British, French, German and Austro-Hungarian – that we have studied over the past decade.”

The Ottoman and Turkish Republic’s policy of elimination reduced Asia Minor’s Christian communities from 20% of the population at the end of the nineteenth century to 2% in 1924.

Morris and Ze’evi write, “The Turks and their helpers murdered, straightforwardly or indirectly, through privation and disease, between 1.5 and 2.5 million Christians between 1894 and 1924.”

The rise of the Young Turks and the Ottomans’ entry into WWI revealed a kind of grotesque historical irony. According to a contemporary witness, Wilfred Post, a doctor and missionary who was born and reared in Turkey, “The proclamation of the holy war, which failed to unite all Islam against the Entente, nevertheless had the effect of arousing the old fanatic spirit of the Turks themselves and they prosecuted the holy war within their own Empire with a zeal exceeding that of their forefathers.”

The German diplomat and archeologist Max von Oppenheim produced the 1914 “Memorandum on the fomenting of rebellions among the Muslim subjects of our enemies” that was sent to Sultan Mehmed V for approval. In short, Oppenheim and Kaiser Wilhelm II convinced the Ottomans to urge Muslims worldwide to revolt against their colonial masters based on jihadi ideology.
Oppenheim’s jihad failed while the Ottoman’s internal jihad against Christians succeeded at the cost of spectacular violence and suffering for Christian minorities.

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of the Turkish nationalist leader Mustafa Kemal (later Kemal Ataturk) did nothing to diminish the role of “jihadi rhetoric” as an organizing tool.

Kemal, the military hero associated with the Gallipoli campaign and who later become Turkey’s president, declared there was a “national holy war now commencing to save our sacred race and fatherland from the danger of dismemberment.”

Kemal made that statement after resigning from the army, saying he had then become a “crusader [mudjahid] fighting for the glory of the race.”…

Rubbish – I simply quoted from the article you posted, as I have done elsewhere. Hence the personal attacks – you know very well what the article reads because I pointed it out to your face. And I’ll qute it again for good measure, tovarisch Christianblood:

          THE UKRAINIAN HOLOCAUST OF 1932-33

Sixty-five years ago, between seven and twelve million Ukrainians were systematically and deliberately starved to death in Ukraine, the “Bread Basket of Europe”.

Long before there was a Russia, Kyivan Rus’ (Ukraine) was a free and fiercely independent nation. Indeed, it was to Ukraine that Christianity was first delivered by St. Andrew – the First called Apostle – and only much later, from Ukraine, on to Russia. In the 13th century Kvivan Rus’ was decimated by invasions from Asia; and by the time the invaders were driven back, the base of power had shifted North to Muscovy. For centuries thereafter, Ukraine was subjugated to Tsarist Russia. Then in 1918, following the murder of the Tsar and his family by the Communists, the Ukrainians declared Ukraine a free and independent country, just as it was centuries before there even was a Russia.

Communist forces eventually recaptured the land and once again, as in the time of the Tsars, Ukraine would become little more than a part of a larger whole. But as never before in their long history, Ukrainians would be forced to pay a dreadfully high price in their survival as a people. Probably more than other Bolsheviks, Stalin had an exceedingly low opinion of peasants; for he considered them to be incurably conservative and a major barrier to revolutionary change. And because Ukrainians were an overwhelmingly peasant people, among whom native nationalism was on the rise, they were doubly vulnerable to his designs. Ukraine continued to be a land of innumerable villages of peasants working the land, with the Orthodox Church and traditional values dominating their lives. Perhaps most galling for the Bolshevik revolutionaries was the fact that the peasant showed little inclination for sharing their dreams of a Communist utopia.

Stalin’s plans for industrial expansion were based on the state purchasing cheap grain, from the peasants, which would be sold abroad at a profit; the proceeds would then be used to finance the industrialization of the nation. But the prices that the state offered, often at one eighth of the market price, were so low that the peasants refused to sell their grain. Infuriated by what he called “sabotage”. Stalin ordered an all-out drive for total collectivization. All land and all property, including livestock, were to be taken away from private ownership and given over to the state. Small farms were to be incorporated into huge Collectives. The plan was accompanied by such brutality and horror that it can only be described as war waged by the regime against the peasantry. It was to be one of the most traumatic events in Ukraine history.

Those who resisted most stubbornly were shot. Others were deported to forced labor camps in the Arctic and Siberia. The rest were deprived of all their property – including their homes and personal belongings – barred from the collective farms, and told to fend for themselves. In the winter of 1929-30 hundreds of thousands of peasants and their families were dragged from their homes, packed into freight trains, and shipped thousands of miles to the north where they were dumped amidst Arctic wastes, often without food or shelter. In this way a large part of Ukraine’s most industrious and efficient farmers ceased to exist.

When even these severe measures failed to have the desired effect, the government dispatched thousands of urban workers to implement its policies in the villages. Their efforts produced pandemonium and outrage; often officials were beaten or shot. The most common form of protest, however, was the slaughter of farm animals. Determined not to let the government have their livestock, peasants preferred to kill their animals instead. Between 1928 and 1932 Ukraine lost about 50% of its livestock. Because of poor transportation facilities, much of the grain which was produced either spoiled or was eaten by rats. Even more serious was the lack of draught animals, many of which had been slaughtered earlier. Government officials were confident, however, that they could provide enough new tractors to replace the missing horses and oxen. But the production of tractors fell badly behind schedule, and a very high percentage of those which were delivered broke down almost immediately. As a result, in 1931 almost one third of the grain yield was lost during the harvest. To make matters worse, a drought hit southern Ukraine in 1931.

The Ukraine continued to resist and to dream of a free and independent nation; and since Joseph Stalin could not kill that dream, he first decided to deport all Ukrainians to other parts of the Soviet Union. Discovering that there were too many of them to move, Stalin decided to kill the dreamers instead; and his weapon of choice was a man-made, artificial famine which was designed to eliminate the troublemakers and force the survivors into total, complete submission. The famine which occurred in 1932-33 was to be for Ukrainians what the Holocaust was to the Jews, and what the Massacres of 1915 were for the Armenians. A tragedy of unfathomable proportions, it traumatized the nation, leaving it with deep social, psychological, political, and demographic scars that it still carries to this very day. The central fact about the famine is that is did not have to happen. Food was available; but the state confiscated most of it for its own use. All crops were requisitioned by the Soviet government and shipped elsewhere. This confiscation of food included seed which was intended for spring planting. Any man, woman or child caught taking even a handful of grain from a government silo could be, and often was, executed. In Moscow a law was enacted stipulating that no grain could be given to the peasants until the government’s full quota had been met. Gangs of party activists conducted brutal house-to-house searches, tearing up floors and delving into wells in search of any grain which remained. In fact, if a person did not appear to be starving, he was suspected of hoarding food.

Famine, which had been spreading throughout 1932, hit full force early in 1933. Lacking bread, peasants ate pets, rats, bark, leaves, and the garbage from the well provisioned kitchens of Communist Party members. Whole villages were erased and people were dying by the tens of thousands. Cannibalism existed. At first cannibals were shot on the spot, but later were thrown into concentration camps. The most terrifying sights were the little children with skeleton limbs dangling from balloon like abdomens. Cordons of troops prevented peasants from entering cities; those who managed to break through wandered about until they fell in the streets. Such people were loaded onto trucks, together with the corpses, and dumped into pits outside of the city.

With the climbing death rate during the famine, the publication of death statistics was forbidden by the Soviet government. When deaths due to famine took on major proportions in Ukraine in 1932-33, physicians certifying the cause of death were forbidden to name the killer – starvation. The word “holod” (hunger) was decreed as counter-revolutionary, and no one valuing his own life and those of his relatives dared use it publicly. When the results of the census of 1937, for example, revealed shockingly high mortality rates, Stalin had the leading census takers shot.

Elsewhere there was no famine – much of Russia proper barely experienced it – but the borders of Ukraine had been sealed by the secret police; there was no escape. The Ukrainians had been sentenced to death. And thus, the greatest genocide in history was systematically accomplished. A noteworthy aspect of the famine was the attempt to erase it from public consciousness; the Soviet position was to deny that it had occurred at all. To curry Stalin’s favor, for example, Walter Duranty – the Moscow based reporter of the New York Times, repeatedly denied the existence of a famine in his articles (while privately estimating that about ten million people may have starved to death). For the “profundity, impartiality, sound judgment and exceptional clarity” of his dispatches from the USSR, Duranty received the Pulitzer Prize in 1932.

Yet, even to this very day, there are those who deny or minimize the Ukrainian Holocaust to such a degree that it is being referred to as “the hidden holocaust of the twentieth century”. In 1984, for example, a documentary film entitled HARVEST OF DESPAIR was shown on Canadian television. This film won numerous prizes at World Film Festivals and a 1986 Academy award nomination; yet all three top commercial networks in America refused to show it. As recently as 1994, the New Jersey state legislators were being pressured to exclude the Ukrainian Holocaust from Resolution A-589 (The Holocaust Education Bill). Media coverage has been just as one-sided about the Greek, Armenian, Syrian and Nestorians Holocausts of 1984-1923 and, more recently, the Serbian Holocaust. The atrocities against Christians – especially Orthodox Christians – continue to this day!

Let’s do the math, shall we? (12/50)*100 = 24%. One quarter = 25%. Hence what said: nearly one quarter of them were murdered by Russia in Ukraine alone. In any case, if anyone here defends Turkey it is you – at least since the Turks started waving money at Russia…

“Don’t wana waste time with your nonsense here”

The “nonsense” being me quoting from the article you provided. The actual nonsense was your rambling about me defending Turks.

          “but understand that
both Russians and Ukrainians and other USSR Slavic Christians were ALL victims of the Bolshevist Marxism
          ”

It was not the Ukrainians who imposed a famine on Russians that killed millions – do not try to capitalize on their suffering, you ghoulish, soulless fiend. In any case, aren’t you, by your logic, an “Anti-Christian traitor defending his Ottoman/Turkish masters”?

“which was NOT indigenous to the Slavic people but was imported from Germany and was forcefully and brutally imposed on Russo-Ukranian Christians by others who hated them.”

Again with that nonsense? Same responses at the last time. Again: Ukrainians aren’t Russians. Stop trying to capitalize on the deaths of millions of Ukrainians. And again: it was not Germans or Americans who invaded Russia to impose Marxism. it was eagerly adopted by Russians – what nationality was Lenin again?…

“BTW, you keep accusing Soviet repression on Russians”

Again: where have I did that? I pointed out that your very own countrymen starved millions of Ukrainians. Your usual response to that is “but Russians also murdered other Russians” – no different, in nature, thans muslims apologists saying that islamic terror groups murder muslims as well as infidels…

“alone while the three longest serving Soviet premiers who led the USSR for much of its 70 year history were not even Russians. Joseph Stalin was Georgian and Khrushchev and Brezhnev were Ukrainian nationals!”

According to you, Russians and Ukrainians are one and indivisible. You need to keep your schizophrenia under control…

This requires no saying, but I’ve stated my distaste for Erdogan on many occasions, and stated, also on many occasions, that Turkey should be kicked out of NATO.

Now, I didn’t force CB to post an article stating that his very own countrymen – Russians – starved millions of Ukrainians. He did it out of his own free will. True God says just the opposite:

        Psalms 5

        Psalms 10
7 His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.

        Psalms 17
1 Hear a just cause, O LORD, give heed to my cry; Give ear to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips.

        Psalms 24
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully.

        Psalms 26
4 I do not sit with deceitful men, Nor will I go with pretenders.

        Psalms 32
2 How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit!

So is it good with you if the USA sells its most high tech weapon systems to Turkey but Russia shouldn’t be allowed?
Was it good with you when the Turks invaded Cyprus in 1974 with weapons made and purchased from the US, murdering 3500 Greek Cypriots and annexing over half of the country?
Communism in Russia (Soviet Union) lasted about 74 years. That is but a blink of an eye compared to how long Russia has existed and yet you use these dark years to “define” Russia. Russia for centuries defended many East European nations from the depredations of the Ottoman Empire. In the Crimean war of 1853 Russia would have extinguished Ottoman Turkey for good but France and Great Britain sided with Turkey, forcing a truce.
For centuries Russia has been a constant hammer against Ottoman expansion and the main cause for this wicked caliphates final implosion.
It is the Western powers, including the US that has brought this monstrosity of a country back to life.

Ah, I was wondering when the backup would show up.

“So is it good with you if the USA sells its most high tech weapon systems to Turkey but Russia shouldn’t be allowed?”

My point here is that your fellow CB seems to think the opposite – he went from denouncing Turkey as an evil, terrorism sponsoring allied of the US to defending Turkey as an independent nation who can buy weapons from whoever they want – I guess CB only cares about Turkey arming terror groups when they do it with weapons bought from the Americans. No amount of your asinine questions will change that.

“Was it good with you when the Turks invaded Cyprus in 1974 with weapons made and purchased from the US, murdering 3500 Greek Cypriots and annexing over half of the country?”

Is it good with you if the Turks use weapons bought from Russia to murder Greeks and Cypriots? Would it be good with you if the Turks had used, for example, Russian-made Kalashnikovs, like most islamic terror groups use nowadays? Would that be OK with you? I already stated, on several occasions, that Turkey should leave Cyprus, as well as NATO. Do you need me to repeat it again?

“Communism in Russia (Soviet Union) lasted about 74 years. That is but a blink of an eye compared to how long Russia has existed and yet you use these dark years to “define” Russia.”

Didn’t Russia used to define it self as communist? And considering the lasting impact your commie nation had during those 74 years, am I supposed to pretend they didn’t exist? Or did you cheer in joy when the Soviets created the “Palestinians” to use as a tool against Israel for being a US ally? Do you shed tears of joy when a “Palestinian” murders an Israeli civilian? Or perhaps you are a bigger fan of other Russia-supported terror groups? Perhaps the Japanese Red Army? Maybe Italy’s Red Brigades? The Sandinistas? MPLA?

“Russia for centuries defended many East European nations from the depredations of the Ottoman Empire.”

More recently, Russia conspired with Nazi Germany to split Eastern Europe between them. And, also more recently, you Russians had your dirty paws on most of it – which prompted most Warsaw pact countries to seek the protection of NATO as soon as they got the chance… And weren’t a fair number of Ottoman-Russian wars a simple matter of seizing territory, as imperial powers are known to do? Perhaps we should ask, let’s say, the Poles what they think of Russia?

“In the Crimean war of 1853 Russia would have extinguished Ottoman Turkey for good but France and Great Britain sided with Turkey, forcing a truce.”

Didn’t Russia had a larger army fighting closer to home? Didn’t those Western powers force the Ottomans to abolish the jyzia? And didn’t Russia side with Turkey against UK-backed Greece during the Greek-Turk wars?

“For centuries Russia has been a constant hammer against Ottoman expansion and the main cause for this wicked caliphates final implosion.”

Right – and no one in the West fought the Ottomans and their predecessors and allies ever. No Reconquista, no Tours, no Lepanto, no Covadonga, no Vienna – twice – no Tolosa. Italians, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Austrians – none of them ever lifted a finger against the Ottomans, their allies and their predecessors. Let me tell you a little secret – because, apparently, the best way to keep a secret from you is hiding it in a book. Westerners were fighting islamic caliphates before the Rus vikings settled in Novgorod. But, were I to believe your forked tongue, I’d think that I’d owe my Christian heritage to Russia instead of the Holy League….

“It is the Western powers, including the US that has brought this monstrosity of a country back to life.”

Even if that were, in fact, the case, I don’t see Russia refusing to deal with Turkey as a matter of principle. No, your precious little Putin is more eager to take Turkish money than the US or the West, so you can take that and shove it.

Russia did aid some Eastern European nations in their fight for freedom from the Ottomans–and this is a very good thing, as I have noted here many times.

The implication that this now means that it is a good thing that Russia is enabling Islam in Iran and Turkey is *quite* mistaken, though. These Muslim thugs are not allies with any Infidels.

I am impressed Mr Spencer – three Türkiye bashing articles in two days (19-20 July). You’ve outdone yourself – whipping your crowd of bigots into a feeding frenzy! ofcourse what all this has to do with religion beats me.

You of course forget to mention the genocide of 5 million Ottoman Turks, during the same time periods you state above, in the Balkans, Eastern Turkey, Western Turkey, by Greek, Serbian armies, irregulars, Armenian Dashnaks…etc.

of course we can always apologise for our existence, apologise for conquering Anatolia in the 12th century from the Eastern Roman Empire, apologise for the Seljuk and the Ottoman Empires. We should pack our stuff and go back to Central Asia, oh wait can’t do that either as the Chinese Huns are holding our ancestors – the Uighurs – at gunpoint committing ethnic cleansing on a scale not seen since WW2. So we are stuck aren’t we! what can we do? where can we go?

I for one have never seen a Turk, much less a turkish leader, be apologetic about anything, the exact opposite. I’ve only seen Turks celebrating, bragging, and gloating over those conquests and imperial glories. Often accompanied with dreams and promises of more to come in the near future.
And for another, though I personally wouldn’t object to you “going back to Central Asia” we must always try to be realists. So, for now, all we’re kindly asking is that you stop trying to steal even more lands than what you’ve already conquered and “turkified” (a polite term for ethnically cleansed).

There were well over two million Chri8stians–Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, and Levantines–in Turkey before the 1890s–by 1923, there was just a pitiful remnant remaining. There are almost no Chr8istins surviving in Turkey today. For the appalling “Falsafa” to pretend that the genocide of Christians was instead that small minority wiping out Muslims is grotesque, but should not surprise.

It all seems very strange. I remember the movie Lawrence of Arabia and how he supposedly loved Arab culture so much and wanted to organize Arabs to fight against the evil Turks. I guess the story in the film was not based on an historical analysis of the issues involved in the Near East. And of course there was the other film about Chinese Gordon and the mahdi. Such films probably do more to muddy the issues than to clear them up. Now I am not sure what to believe or who was in the right.

the recollection by the British diplomat Gerald Fitzmaurice was based on hearsay, He did not personally witness the supposed events that is claimed in this book. Not factual, self serving, poor scholarship.

    For those who have an intention to acquire a more balanced historical assessment through true scholarship I may recommend the following historians;

    Lord Kinross
    Norman Stone
    Gunther Lewy
    Bernard Lewis

          Falsafa,
People of Islamic faith do all kinds of evil in the name of religion and also quote Koran etc. to justify them.
Every terror attack is followed by breast beating and whining of victim-hood by Muslims. Not even Sep 11 was spared of this drama. The supremacist nature of Islam is defended shamelessly through lies.

After an Islamic terror act the Muslims apologists usually refer to imperialism, plunder of Islamic lands and so on as though Islam was NEVER A PARTY to those atrocities.

Islamic world knows very little about Christianity and the Western empires of the past. They can only brag that the bible is “corrupted”, which again is the biggest con job of Islam. Propaganda?
Aren’t all the lies, a propaganda of Islam because EVEN THE VICTIM-HOOD CLAIM CAN NEVER BE APPLIED UNIFORMLY ACROSS THE GLOBE by Islamic apologists.

    Toxic Zaki

Please read and explain the last major sub-paragraph
to Article Seven of the Hamas Covenant, which, in
turn, is a direct quotation form the Hadith, and spells
out Islam genocidal agenda against all Jews, regardless
of Zionism, occupation, Palestine or anything else.

A similar agenda is shared by all Islamists not only
against all Jews, but also against all Hindus, Christians,
the adherents of all other religions other than Islam
    and all secular humans.

“Islamophobia” is a fake excuse used to justify
the Islamic genocidal agenda of all others,
while Humanophobia is practised by Muslims
    against all others.

It’s time the genocidal Turkish Muslims end
the occupation of Anatolia and restore it
to the Greek Christians, and should end the
    occupation of North Eastern Cyprus.

At the same time the close to forty million
Kurds oppressed by Turkish rule should
be granted full self rule and allowed to
    establish their own independent state.

They have a far greater justified claim
for it than the “Palestinians” who already
fully control more than 82% of the original
territory of “Palestine” under the guise
of “Trans Jordan” later renamed “Jordan”
which was established on what was
originally designated for a national home
    for the Jewish People.

Jordan is under populated with just under
ten million on land more than five times
that of the whole of Israel, with just under
nine million, even if you include the so
    called West Bank.

    Christians are still being exterminated
by Muslims in Syria, Iraq, the Lebanon,
    and Egypt, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan
and many other parts of the world.
