Saeed Ahmad Hasan fails to understand that the Arabs’ historical memory of the Ottoman Empire makes them hostile to the Turks today. He is unaware that Saudi Arabia is the Muslim Brotherhood’s greatest enemy, while Turkey is its greatest supporter.
He has a dreamy view of Turkey’s starry place in the Islamic firmament:
“Turkey is rising fast in the world of Islam due to its administrative capacity, better governance, and fastest military and economic progress. Due to it being the descendant of the Ottoman Caliphate [which ended in 1924], Muslims have respect for it. It has better relations with Europe and America, etc. Turkey is that emerging star of the world of Islam for which the ummah has established great expectations.” the author notes.
Every one of these statements is wrong. Turkey does not have discerningly “better governance” than many other Muslim states (e.g., Indonesia, Oman, Tunisia, Morocco, Azerbaijan). Erdogan’s increasing authoritarianism, his arrogating to himself powers the President was never supposed to possess, have led to the political degringolade. In the recent election, Erdogan’s party lost all of Turkey’s three main cities: Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. People now speak, as they never dared to before, about the end of the Erdogan era. Far from the “economic progress” that Saeed Ahmad Hasan mentions, Turkey is in economic free fall. In the last 18 months, the lira has lost 60% of its value as against the dollar. As for its supposed military progress, Turkey’s acceptance of the Russian S-400 missile defense system has led the U.S. to cancel the sale of 100 F-35s to Turkey.
Turkey has “better relations with Europe and America”? Relations between Turkey and its fellow members of NATO have never been worse; articles keep appearing calling for NATO to expel Turkey, given that Erdogan has predicted a war between “the cross and the crescent,” leaving no doubt what side Turkey would be on. His call for the creation of a pan-Islamic force, with Turkey its putative leader, that would attack and destroy Israel, is not what the Americans or the Europeans want to hear from a member of NATO.
It is precisely the neo-Ottoman dreams of Erdogan that make Arabs mistrustful of Turkey. Though they did not experience it themselves, they have heard the stories about how the Arabs were treated by their Ottoman masters. They most certainly do not “have respect” for Turkey because it is the heir to the Ottomans. Quite the contrary: it is “due to” Turkey’s “being the descendant of the Ottoman Caliphate” that makes Arabs so dislike and distrust it. They don’t remember the Ottoman Empire fondly, despite what Hasan, in distant Pakistan, may think.
As for Turkey having “better relations with Europe and America” — what can Hasan possibly mean? Relations between Turkey and its fellow members of NATO have never been worse; articles keep appearing calling for NATO to expel Turkey, given that Erdogan has predicted a war between “the cross and the crescent,” leaving no doubt what side Turkey would be on. His call for the creation of a pan-Islamic force, with Turkey its putative leader, that would attack and destroy Israel, is not what the Americans or the Europeans want to hear from a member of NATO.
Turkey’s relations with Washington have gone from lukewarm to bad for other reasons as well. Erdogan became enraged with the Americans when they refused to hand over Fethulleh Gulen after the failed coup attempt in July 2016 in Turkey. The Americans, in turn, were angry both with his initial demand and with his subsequent fury. They were even angrier when the Turks seized American pastor Andrew Brunson, who for decades had tended a tiny, 25-person church that met in a tenement in Izmir, on charges of belonging to an Armed Terrorist Organization, and used him as a pawn, offering to trade him for Gulen. The Americans refused, and put enormous economic pressure on Turkey; it worked, and Pastor Brunson was freed. But there was no repair to American-Turkish relations. After Erdogan’s startling remark about a coming war between “the cross and the crescent,” after his suggestion of creating a pan-Islamic military force to destroy Israel, after his hysterical demand for Fethulleh Gulen to be extradited, after the imprisonment of Pastor Brunson, and the attempt to use him as a bargaining chip, there was one last straw. That was Erdogan’s refusal to cancel Turkey’s purchase of Russia’s S-400 anti-missile defense system, which led Washington to cancel the sale of 100 F-35 planes to Turkey. All that remains, to complete the destruction of Ankara’s ties to Washington, is for Erdogan to shut down the Incirlik air base.
As for Europe, the reluctance of the E.U. to admit Turkey as a member is understandable. The negotiations, such as they are, can be allowed to drag on, but there is no longer any chance that Turkey will be admitted to the E.U. For if it were granted such membership, this would allow not just Turks, but other Muslim economic migrants as well, once they made it to Turkey, to then travel freely throughout the member states of the E.U. The E.U. countries are now trying to cope with tens of millions of Muslim migrants in their midst. They do not want any more Muslims arriving coming from Turkey, whether they be Turks or other Muslims using Turkey as their pathway to Europe. Europeans regard with dread the prospect of an additional 80 million Muslims becoming part of the E.U.
The Europeans have been watching with dismay and anxiety as Erdogan systematically undermines Kemalism. He has been busily re-Islamizing Turkey with his tens of thousands of new mosques, and his 4,000 Imam Hatip religious schools. A change in the law now allows women to wear the hijab in civil service jobs (which includes university teachers) and government offices. Erdogan has “sanitised” the education system by, for example, changing the curriculum to reflect Muslim beliefs; evolution is no longer being taught in Turkish schools. He has imposed “national and spiritual values” on the mass media. Failure to uphold those “values” as defined by the government may explain why more journalists have been jailed in Turkey than in any other country.
Given all this, how can Saeed Ahmad Hasan claim that Turkey has “better relations” than other Islamic states with Europe and America? He simply hasn’t been paying attention.
mortimer says
Hugh Fitzgerald has correctly identified that most Muslims hate Turkey with a passion and have no interest in the creation of a second Ottoman Empire. Erdogan forgot that whole mess with Lawrence of Arabia and the tribes that fought the Turkish army from the rear.
Erdogan’s technicolor dreams may appeal to his dopey supporters, but they haven’t a chance of being realized.

Muslims are not united but are at war with another, killing each other and hate one another because of ideological, sectarian and denominational differences. The Sunni majority consider Shiites, Sufis, Ahmadis and Ismaeli minorities as ‘infidels’ and would exterminate them if the get the chance! The Wahhabi Takfiri muslims are killing more moderate, secularist muslims and consider them as not real muslims! You conveniently leave out that the opposite is also true – shias, etc, consider sunnis as infidels. And, seeing how you can’t even keep track of your own bulls***, I’ll remind you that you adamantly declared that sufis were sunnis and vehemently denied the existence of shia sufi groups so, now, you’re telling us that sunnis consider sunnis to be infidels. Where’s the sense and logic in that?
“The Wahhabi Takfiri muslims”
I’ve asked you this like a dozen times already and you have yet to answer. “Takfir” is the act of declaring another muslim as a heretic/non-muslim. And that’s the caveat – another muslim. It takes a muslim to call takfir. You have, on numerous occasions, referred to wahabism, the form of islam most closely resembling what muhammad practised, as “takfiri”. Are you a muslim?
Angemon says
“Islam is a bloody divided mess that is hurting the whole world and Western nations are very wrong in their they support of Wahhabi Saudis ”
Funny how you conveniently leave out Russia’s support of Turkey and Pakistan, and the world’s number one terrorism sponsoring state, the shia (non-sunni) Iran. I guess that, for you, supporting islam is bad just as long as it’s the other guy supporting the “wrong” islam, not you supporting the “right” type of islam – rules for thee but not for me, etc….

Shiites, Ismaelis, Ahmadis and Sufis don’t consider Sunnis as infidels
(BTW, Almost all Sufis are Sunni themselves, but more mystical if you could understand what word (mystical) means).
PS: I can share with you tons of evidence where Sunni jihadists sort out Shiites, Ismaelis, Ahmadis and Sufis and kill them coldbloodedly in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq or Syria for being simply Shiites, Ahmadies, Ismaeilis and Sufis! Again Sunnis Wahabi/Salafis consider Shiites, Ismaelis, Ahmadis and Sufis as infidels but NOT the vice versa!
Yes, most Sufis are overwhelmingly Sunnis, there can be some Shiites that are Sunnis but most Sufis are Sunnis and you can look it up if you wish. The Shiite sect is by itself more mystical than the more legalistic and Puritanian Sunni sect may be that is why you don’t have more Sufis in the Shiite sect since mysticism is already included in their religious practices!
You are correct in that ‘Takfir’ is the act of declaring another muslim as a heretic/non-muslim by Sunnis Wahhabi/Salafi muslims but one does not have be a muslim to call a Wahhabi jihadist a Takfiri and use that term. The Sunni Muslim jihadists are known by many words and Takfiri is one of them so why do you think it is wrong by non-uslims to use the name Takfiri?
Angemon says

Sure they do. Especially shiites.

“but NOT the vice versa! ”
Again: shiites consider sunnis to be heretics. Not that it prevents your precious little Iran from providing support to sunni terror groups…
“Yes, most Sufis are overwhelmingly Sunnis, there can be some Shiites that are Sunnis ”
Again: you called me ignorant for saying that there were non-sunni sufis. Are you going to admit you were wrong and apologize for insulting me?
“You are correct in that ‘Takfir’ is the act of declaring another muslim as a heretic/non-muslim by Sunnis Wahhabi/Salafi muslims”
You didn’t think that through, did you? You’re saying that one needs to be a wahabi/salafi to declare takfir – thus making you a wahabi/salafi…
“but one does not have be a muslim to call a Wahhabi jihadist a Takfiri and use that term.”
You have. By its very definition – takfir is when a muslim declares another muslim to be an heretic. So, are you a muslim? I’m asking because you often call wahabis, the form of islam closest to islam as practised by muhammad, “takfiris”.

The problem is the US-led Nato, the West consider Russians as the “other” and wish to Westernize them, colonize them or capture or control them. Mind you, for the past 200 years Western nations of various kinds invaded to destroy and colonize Russia and the last and the most bloodiest of those invasions was the Nazi invasion which caused the death of 26 million Russians!
Today as we speak the West, this time led by the US (Nato) are once again gathering their armies on Russian Western borders to try another invasion and Russia has NO option but to defend itself as it did over the past 200 years! Concerning China, Russia has NO option but to Aline itself with China, Russia has absolutely NO hope of improving relations with the West, it has tried that for over 20 years and received back only threats, sanctions and constant demonization of its country, people and leaders!
I would highly recommend that you watch the discussion below which is addressing your questions and concerns about Russia and China relations. Thank you!
Angemon says
“The problem is the US-led Nato, the West consider Russians as the “other” and wish to Westernize them, colonize them or capture or control them.”
Nothing could be farther from the truth. This is the fear-mongering Putin uses to stay in power – the threat of westerners coming to kill Russians and taking Russian children to turn into gays. If the West wanted to conquer Russia, we could have done so right after the fall of the USSR. What did we do, instead? Lend a helping hand. What have we got to show for it? A hatred far greater than anything seen during the Cold War era.
“Mind you, for the past 200 years Western nations of various kinds invaded to destroy and colonize Russia and the last and the most bloodiest of those invasions was the Nazi invasion which caused the death of 26 million Russians!”
Was it the same Nazis Russians signed a pact with? A pact where they split Eastern Europe amongst the two? And, of course, other than the direction the armies went, there’s nothing “Western” about these invasions – how about you name these invasions so we can see if any of them was caused by a leader sayng “We are Westerners, we need to invade Russia”?
“Today as we speak the West, this time led by the US (Nato) are once again gathering their armies on Russian Western borders to try another invasion”
Is that so? Where, pray and tell, is this army located? When is this invasion supposedly taking place? You’ve been spouting this rubbish for 5 years now – surely you can point to the HQ of this army you, for years, have assured us is going to invade Russia any moment now…
“and Russia has NO option but to defend itself as it did over the past 200 years!”
I know what you call “defence” – shall we ask Ukraine about Crimea?…
“Concerning China, Russia has NO option but to Aline itself with China, Russia has absolutely NO hope of improving relations with the West”
Not while you keep demonizing the West, as seen in your opening statement… And, of course, Russia has had several conflicts with China through history. Funny how that works – “no, Russia can’t trust the West because it had several conflicts with the West, but Russia can trust China, despite the conflicts with China”…
“it has tried that for over 20 years and received back only threats, sanctions and constant demonization of its country, people and leaders!”
Far from it – in fact, it’s the other way around. Western powers were far more lenient than they should have been with a defeated foe. What do we have to show for it? Anti-Western propaganda, delivered to the very heart of the Western world. And stop playing the innocent victim card. You know very well why Russia is facing sanctions. It’s because, among other things, Russian militiamen armed by the Russian government shot down a civilian plane murdering scores of European citizens. Those Russian militiamen were caught trying to hide the evidence of what they did and scavenging the bodies of the dead for valuables. Those Russian militiamen are currently living in Russia, under all the protection and freedom the Russian government fives them. “Good relations” are earned, not given – that means, among other things, that Russian criminals don’t get to murder citizens of a sovereign nation, with the support of the Russian government, without there being consequences.

With respect to the author I’m somewhat sceptical with some of his points.
The lira may be in freefall lately, largely thanks to Sultan Recep’s “quranomics” with regards to interest rates, but that doesn’t change the reality that under his nearly two decades long rule the turkish economy has tripled in size and is now in the G20 (G17 to be precise). As for his relation with the west being at an all time low, well it may be so, but the fact that he can’t stop calling the Germans “nazis” at his rallies, is not going to stop Volkswagen from constructing new plants in Turkey to produce its cars. https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/volkswagen-picks-turkey-new-factory
Plus the Turks can compensate for worsening relations with the west by strengthening their ties with the “Eurasian” block and I believe that is actually their plan.
Also with regards to the Arabs (I mean the broader arab public opinion) having a lingering dislike for the Turks and the Ottoman “legacy” I’d like to see some actual polls before I concede that point. My own impression is that much of the muslim world today does indeed see Turkey with respect and admiration, because on one hand it’s an islamic country, and on the other hand it’s one that’s powerful enough to be treated with respect by the leaders of the kuffar powers at their G20 meetings.
CRUSADER says

SAFI, Turkey is treated with respect, by Kuffars? Really?

More than just respect. Western leaders regularly prostrate themselves before the Sultan for a chance to do business with him. To quote the leader of the biggest kuffar superpower at the recent June 29th G20 summit in Osaka (just after the first parts of the S-400 began arriving)
“… It’s my honor to be with a friend of mine, somebody I’ve become very close to, in many respects, and he’s doing a very good job: the President of Turkey. And we have a meeting largely to do with trade. We’re doing more and more business, and we expect to be able to quadruple that business with Turkey. We think it will be great. They’re great craftsmen. They have great product. And we’re opening it up. We also do military trading, and they buy a lot of our military equipment. And it’s an honor to be with you, Mr. President.”
Then pointing to Erdogan’s entourage in the room, Trump said: “And look at these people, how nice they are. Look at them. They’re so easy to deal with. Look at them. Central casting. There’s no Hollywood set where you could produce people that look like them.”…

Meanwhile, this top admiral who entered the US presidential campaign has been criticized for devaluing Israel:
Former Pennsylvania congressman Joe Sestak, the 25th Democratic presidential candidate this year, took sharp criticism in 2010 for his Israel record en route to losing a U.S. Senate election that year.
In the summer of 2010, the newly founded pro-Israel outfit Emergency Committee for Israel released its first ad, blasting Sestak for speaking in front of the Council for Islamic Relations (CAIR) in 2007, as well as signing a left-wing J Street letter to President Barack Obama criticizing the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. Sestak was also hit for not signing a defense of Israel circulated by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Sestak erupted at the charges, saying he had a pro-Israel record and the ads were a smear. He said the CAIR event was not a fundraiser and rejected the notion the group was a front for the terrorist group Hamas. He pointed to letters in his career calling Israel a “vital ally” and J Street jumped to his defense in an ad touting his support for Israel and a two-state solution. His campaign asked Comcast to stop running the ad from the Emergency Committee for Israel.
However, Sestak admitted in September of 2010 he was wrong to sign the J Street letter, which Politico called a “win for the hawks and a blow to J Street’s attempt to create political space on a pro-Israel left of the Middle East conflict.”
Nevertheless, J Street touted that Sestak did not back off the policies outlined in the letter. The Gaza blockade, imposed by Israeli-Egyptian forces in 2007, is for security reasons, due to the governance of the terrorist group Hamas in the Palestinian territory.
Senator Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) went on to defeat him in the wave Republican year.
Sestak served two terms representing Pennsylvania’s Seventh District in Congress from 2007 to 2011. After his failed 2010 Senate bid, Sestak ran again in 2016 but lost the Democratic nomination to Kate McGinty, who was also defeated by Toomey.
Sestak joins two-dozen other candidates for the 2020 nomination, the majority of whom are polling at 1 or zero percent. The retired Navy admiral said in his announcement that the U.S. was retreating from the world and described himself as a champion of the working class.
