The British establishment media is unlikely to comply. Like the media all over the West, the UK press seems to consider it its foremost priority to protect the image of Islam, and therefore to obfuscate the identity and motives of Muslims who commit crimes that are in accord with Islamic texts and teachings. And so they call Muslim rape gangs “Asian,” because no one can bear to contemplate the fact that these gangs are animated by, and justify their actions by, Islamic teachings regarding the “captives of the right hand,” i.e., Infidel sex slaves (Qur’an 4:3, 4:24, 23:1-6, 33:50, 70:30). I call them “Muslim” here because their motivations come from Islam, not from the fact that they’re “Asian.” But Pamela Geller and I are just about the only ones who dare to be that accurate and realistic.
“Sikhs Ask Media to Stop Calling Pakistani Muslim Rape Gangs ‘Asian,’” by Victoria Friedman, Breitbart, August 8, 2019 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):
The Network of Sikh Organisations (NSO) has called on the media to stop referring to grooming gangs that are predominantly comprised of perpetrators from a Pakistani Muslim Pakistani as “Asian”, which inaccurately incorporates much of the British Hindu and Sikh communities.
In the United Kingdom, the term “Asian” typically refers to people from or with roots in south Asia — principally India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh — inclusive of people from the diverse range of faiths in that region, including Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus. It is also used in government reporting services to describe all those mentioned, as well as ethnic Chinese people and people from other groups from the wider Asian continent.
The NSO, a registered charity which represents some 130 gurdwaras (temples) and other Sikh organisations in Britain, made the request on Thursday after consultation with the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO).
“British Sikh and Hindu groups have consistently objected to the use of the word ‘Asian’ to describe those convicted in sexual grooming gang cases like in Rochdale, Rotherham, Oxford and Telford,” the NSO said.
Writing on the IPSO’s blog, NSO deputy director Hardeep Singh said that during a meeting with the press standards body in July 2018, they had discussed “the use of the vague and expansive term ‘Asian’, and the consequences of ‘Islamophobia’ on other groups like Sikhs, who often find themselves marginalised in press coverage”….

Brits had a long history of protecting and favoring Muslims over Hindus in pre-independent India. The same policy continued after independence when they allowed swarms of Muslim immigrants from Pakistan to come to Britain – so it is not surprising what the British press has done to protect Muslim rape gangs – just lump them in a general category called “South Asians” where the true identity of Muslims is be hidden from the public and but it is vilifying the innocent South Asians, Hindus, Sikhs, Chinese, and other non-Muslims of these horrific crimes. This ploy has worked for far too long and it is time to call these rape gangs what they really are – Muslim rape gangs!!

So, I’ve seen Sikhs from the corner of my eye at some sketchy petrol stations and I’ve gone to higher alert, only to bring it back down a notch when realizing the bearded and head-covered gents were Sikhs, whom I consider well-mannered people who keep to themselves and are also quite brave — and also rather loyal to the country in whose freedoms they seek.
Yet I’ve wondered how long they’ve not been able to carry their kirpans….
In 1994, the Ninth Circuit held that Sikh students in public school have a right to wear the kirpan.
State courts in New York and Ohio have ruled in favor of Sikhs who faced the rare situation of prosecution under anti-weapons statutes for wearing kirpans, “because of the kirpan’s religious nature and Sikhs’ benign intent in wearing them.”
In New York City, a compromise was reached with the Board of Education whereby the wearing of the knives was allowed so long as they were secured within the sheaths with adhesives and made impossible to draw.
Since the tightening of air travel security in the twenty-first century, the Sikh practice of wearing a Kirpan has caused problems for security personnel at airports and other checkpoints.
As of 2016, the TSA explicitly prohibits the carrying of “religious knives and swords” on one’s person or in cabin baggage and requires that they be packed in checked baggage.
In 2008, American Sikh leaders chose not to attend an interfaith meeting with Pope Benedict XVI at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C., because the United States Secret Service would have required them to leave behind the kirpan.
The secretary general of the Sikh Council stated: “We have to respect the sanctity of the kirpan, especially in such interreligious gatherings. We cannot undermine the rights and freedoms of religion in the name of security.” A spokesman for the Secret Service stated: “We understand the kirpan is a sanctified religious object. But by definition, it’s still a weapon. We apply our security policy consistently and fairly.”

The implications of describing numerous communities as “Asian” are very much a factor in racial tensions in the UK.
Sikh’s and Hindu’s, quite rightly, should be concerned about being identified as part of a group that is abusing young girls.
While it has long been established in the UK that all from south east Asia are called Asian, it is no longer appropriate, and each community should be referred to by their distinct name, thereby identifying those who are guilty of such heinous crimes, but more importantly, eliminating those groups who are innocent, from suspicion and hatred.
Doing so will go a long way to placing the blame where it should be and will assist in racial and ethnic relations between the innocent groups and those in the general
population.
If we are to beat the threats of Islamic terrorism then we must unite against it and knowing that not all groups from a specific region are guilty of it will help unite us and present a united front in the fight against those who would kill and maim our families.
Sikh’s and Hindu’s have long suffered Islamic attacks and know the threat of Islamic oppression. They are allies in this fight and should be welcomed as such.

Why Sikhs don’t throw Muslims under the bus ?
by Simran Jeet Singh
***************************
Some accused me of selling out my Sikh roots, others called me a terrorist sympathizer; others, still, called me some very not nice things. Let’s just say that my block button was even more active than usual on Twitter last week.
In response to the misguided messages, I would like to share some thoughts on the anti-Muslim hate Sikhs endure and why I, along with many other Sikhs I know, continue to stand as allies to our Muslim sisters and brothers.
First, I will note that although Sikhs aren’t Muslim, we remain frequent targets of anti-Muslim violence. Other scholars and I refer to the process that produces the negative feelings animating this violence as “racialization.” This process ties directly to how people perceive our visible identity, including our beards, turbans, and brown skin.
Most people in the world don’t know anything, or not much, about Sikhs, despite the fact that Sikhi is the world’s fifth-largest religion. This general ignorance is a huge problem, especially when coupled with Islamophobic racism.
Over the years, many have asked why we don’t just tell people that Sikhs aren’t Muslims and leave it at that. “Why don’t you let Muslims deal with their own problems?” is a typical one. Or, “Wouldn’t it be easier and safer for you all to just tell people who attack you that they got the wrong person?”
The problem with this response is that it just deflects the hate onto another community. That’s not right, nor is it fair.
Nor is it Sikhism. My faith teaches me to engage in authentic solidarity, to see others’ oppression as our own. It’s just not an option to throw another community under the bus — even if it might make our lives easier or safer.
At a meet-and-greet with constituents in 2017, Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, and a Sikh, was subjected to a racist, Islamophobic tirade and famously responded with love and courage. Afterward he wrote, “Once allowed to grow, hate doesn’t pick and choose, it spreads like fire. Once we say it’s okay to hate someone based on their religion, we’re also opening the door to hate based on race, gender, sexuality, and more. It’s important that we stand united against all forms of hate.”
Jagmeet followed that up with a similar sentiment to what I’ve laid out above: “Many people have commented that I could have just said, ‘I’m not Muslim.’ In fact, many have clarified that I’m actually Sikh,” he said. “While I’m proud of who I am, I purposely didn’t go down that road because it suggests their hate would be OK if I was Muslim. We all know it’s not. I didn’t answer the question because my response to Islamophobia has never been ‘I’m not Muslim.’ It has always been and will be that ‘hate is wrong.’”
Authentic solidarity is both ethical and strategic. It’s ethical because standing with those who are oppressed no matter the consequences is the right thing to do. It’s strategic because confronting hate intersectionally (rather than deflecting it) is the only way forward.
Anti-Muslim racism is not just a problem in what’s termed the Western world. It’s a global phenomenon, with immense and violent implications. We see it in China with the genocidal killing of the Uyghur Muslims. We see it in Myanmar with the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims. Islamophobia is especially bad in modern South Asia, where right-wing nationalists push anti-Muslim propaganda to construct false historical narratives.
For instance, it has become increasingly popular to depict all rulers from the Mughal period (an early modern dynasty that claimed a large swath of South Asia) as tyrannical Muslim fundamentalists who demonized and persecuted all Hindus. This is patently untrue, yet it remains the standard story of modern India, disseminated to the children through schoolteachers and “history” textbooks.
This propaganda not only distorts the truth of what we know about the histories of these communities — it’s also putting innocent Muslim lives in danger.
I get hate messages from right-wing nationalists daily that push this propaganda, Sikhs and Hindus alike. They call me a traitor and a fake Sikh. They say a true Sikh would hate Islam because that’s what Sikhi teaches. They say the Sikh gurus would be ashamed of me for standing against Muslim hate.
As a historian of religion in South Asia, I know this isn’t true. There is ample evidence to which I could point to make my case, not least the strong relationships between the early Sikh gurus of the 15th and 16th centuries and Muslim leaders of the time. The founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Sahib, was so close to his Muslim friend Bhai Mardana that they traveled together for years throughout South and Central Asia.
Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Sikh guru, was so close to Sain Mian Mir, a prominent Sufi from Lahore, that Guru Arjan Sahib invited him to lay the foundation stone for Darbar Sahib of Amritsar, the most historically significant gurdwara (place of worship) in the Sikh tradition.
The sixth guru in the line of the founder, Nanak, Guru Hargobind Sahib established a mosque in his town for Muslims who had no other place to pray. Aptly named “Guru Ki Maseet” (the Guru’s Mosque), it is still standing in Punjab today.
The Sikh gurus incorporated the writings of another prominent South Asian Sufi — Baba Farid — into their compiled scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib. Centuries later, Sikhs continue to sing, recite, and honor Baba Farid’s work on a regular basis.
Each of the examples above makes it clear the Sikh gurus did not hate Muslims — nor did they see befriending Muslims and respecting Islam as antithetical to their teachings. Their lives show us that. History shows us that.
Equipping ourselves with knowledge like this is a critical tool for protecting ourselves from propaganda that gets thrown our way. In a time when anti-Muslim tropes are used increasingly for political machinations (especially from our sitting president), it becomes increasingly important for us to reflect on our own values and to know what we stand for.
It’s also critically important that we dig into our own histories and reflect on what lessons we can learn from them, because failing to do so often means being deluded and manipulated by others with ulterior motives.
At the end of the day, I believe we know in our hearts what is right and what is just. I think we also know intellectually how hard it can be to do the right thing when the stakes are high and the outcomes are uncertain. This is why Jagmeet Singh received so much love for his compassionate response to hate. We all admired him for sticking to his values and showing authentic solidarity in the toughest of moments.
And if he could do it when his career and his personal safety were on the line, perhaps we can try doing it while the stakes are a little lower. Let’s commit to standing with our fellow sisters and brothers who are being demonized and marginalized. Isn’t that the least we can do?

It past due that Sikhs should speak out seperating themselves from Muslism. Some Sikhs felt this was throwing Muslims under the bus, but Sikhs should not have to suffer for the hate and crimes of Islam. Sikhs have suffered enough. All Sikhs were driven from Pakistan in 1947 by Muslims, Muslims killed millions of Sikhs , three of the Sikh Gurus and their children were tortured and killed.Sikh Women were abducted , raped and forcibly converted. Muslims Sacked all Sikh Holy sites. Finally just before 9-11, the Taliban declared Sikhs as enemies of Islam. What I learned teaching Islamic studies in Texas
by Simran Jeet Singh
****************************
As far as I know, I was the first Sikh hired to teach Islamic studies at an American university. I loved every minute of it, especially because my employer, Trinity University, was located in my beloved hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
My first real job also shed new light for me on what it’s like to be an underrepresented minority in this country. Most Americans, in short, don’t know who Sikhs are. Typically they presume we are Muslims, mostly as a result of Islam being racialized in the past few decades: It’s not just a faith, it’s also a look, and the resulting stereotypes square with the appearance of many Sikh men — brown skin, turban, beard. That’s me.
Of course I had long since learned what “looking Muslim” meant in post-9/11 America. I knew firsthand the violence that came with misguided understandings of Islam, and as a Sikh especially, I felt compelled to do something about it. It’s precisely what sent me down the path of studying religious communities and addressing the racism they experience. I decided to make allyship with Muslims and those affected by anti-Muslim hate a centerpiece of my life.
Because my path seemed so obvious to me, I never considered my field of study to be odd. Only when I began interviewing for jobs did I realize that some might find it strange for a Sikh to teach Islam. “How can you teach a religion you don’t even practice?” people would ask, including the president of a university during a job interview.
I wanted to point out to the president that the scholars in his own religion department, like most of the religion scholars I knew, did not practice the faiths they taught. It’s considered normal for white scholars to be interested in traditions other than their own. I didn’t alert him to his bias — I wanted the job, after all. But ever since I’ve wished I could have asked why it was problematic for me to express the same interest — because I’m a person of color? Because I identify as a religious minority?
My wife lived in New York City when I was hired at Trinity, and because she was working and we didn’t yet have kids or a firm long-term plan, I commuted to and from Texas every week. I would fly out Monday morning and return on Thursday evening, a brutal schedule that my generous colleagues bent over backward to accommodate.
But traveling had its perks — tons of frequent flier miles, for one. I also got so familiar with airport security officials that they often let me slide through without subjecting me to otherwise common racial profiling and secondary screening procedures.
But there were uncomfortable aspects. On my regular carrier, Southwest Airlines, whose first-come, first-served seating policy normally sets off a scramble for favorable seats, my fellow passengers consistently chose not to sit beside me, no matter where I was sitting, until no other option was available. I sometimes made a game of it, counting how many empty seats were left for the unseated passengers, trying to guess if I would get a row to myself or at least an empty seat next to me so I could spread out a bit more freely.
It wasn’t just me. Check out the Twitter hashtags #FlyingWhileBrown or #FlyingWhileMuslim or #FlyingWhileSikh. It’s a real thing. I was grateful for the extra space, but part of me would feel sad that people viewed me as someone they didn’t want to be around.
My conundrum in this situation was whether to prepare for class. If I pulled out a book on the Quran or on Islamic history or on politics in the Middle East, would it cause unnecessary distress? After hiding my books for months, reflecting constantly on the Sikh teaching that “A truly wise person neither fears anyone nor inspires fear in anyone,” I eventually put fake book jackets on what I was reading.
Some may say I gave in to illegitimate fears and should have simply read and graded unapologetically; if people felt worried, that was their problem.
I see that argument and honor it. But as a racialized body, it’s not always easy to dismiss others’ fears. For one thing, these fears often have consequences for people who look like me. This is a reality that all people of color know because they live it every day of their lives. There is a real psychological impact of being so cognizant of one’s own appearance and how it’s perceived in public. Even things that seem mundane to many people raise questions for me.
For instance, I was surprised (though I probably shouldn’t have been) by the hate aimed at me in my job. People were angry when I spoke out about a 14-year-old Muslim boy in Texas who had been wrongfully accused of bringing a bomb to school. Local law enforcement handcuffed, detained and questioned him for 90 minutes without permitting him to see his parents. My tweet of solidarity with the boy became part of the story on “Good Morning America” and CNN International. Some called our university president’s office demanding I be fired.
My university supported me, as it did when I got a credible death threat and had to involve authorities. And the time right-wing outlets published defamatory pieces that confused me with another Sikh man, landing me on the notorious Professor Watch List.
In this sense, what I learned by teaching Islamic studies will always be with me. I can only hope that other universities won’t have second thoughts about hiring me because I’ve appeared on an academic watch list.
But this stays with me too: the wonderful students, colleagues and administrators who welcomed me and listened when I shared my darker lessons as I have here. The sharing of our experience helps others see realities that would be hard to imagine otherwise. Through my own stories I hope they too saw what our Muslim neighbors and every minority goes through in trying to overcome the racial and religious supremacies so deeply embedded in the world around us.

By speaking of “Asians” the media can pretend this is all about race. Whereas if you talk about Islam, it’s not a race, it’s a choice. And people can be held accountable for choices. But the idea of holding Islam accountable is just too scary for the media. After all, anyone with the guts to publicly confront Islam is not recognized as a hero, but slandered as a racist. Hard to throw yourself in the line of jihadist fire when you realize you’ll only be slandered for it.
tim gallagher says
What you say is true, Eduardo, but, if our societies are ever going to wake up and deal with Islam, some of these media types and the authorities are going to have to find the courage to tell the truth. As someone who lives in Australia, far away from the UK, I know that I have been stunned when I read about this pathetic lie where they try to pretend that the Muslim Pakistani rape gangs aren’t specifically Muslim, but use this very vague, nonsense term, “Asian”. I guess that’s the main point I was trying to make. To my mind, the lie is such obvious bullshit that it just seems too embarrassingly stupid for anyone to try to use it. Anyone who would buy such a mega lie is too gullible to make it in this world. But maybe it has actually worked and a few people have been fooled by this lie. It is true what you say though that telling the truth about islam can make people a target. The murders at the Charlie Hebdo offices in France proved that. Nevertheless, if people won’t tell the truth about islam, our societies are going to end up in huge trouble.

Comely agree with you and at the same time we have British people telling us the truth then bmget jailed for it. For telling the truth he got longer than most rapists. Getting fed up with our government and its crappy laws. Need to ditch the UN migrant pact too that May signed without asking if we want them or not t,hat only means more terrorism.
Kepha says
It was probably only a matter of time before some other South Asian community in the UK complained about being lumped in the same boat with these Muslim rape gangs.
Tony says
Absolutely right.. I back the Sikhs
And hindu, s… We all know they are not the perpetrators
Lt Mason says
Why not refer to them just as ethnic Pakistani or ethnic Indian or ethnic Sri Lankan, which ever is appropriate?
The term Asian includes people from Bangladesh, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, The Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, China, Taiwan, Korea, Mongolia, and Japan.
Kepha says
It includes everyone from Haifa and Izmir to Hualian and Iloilo.

Of course this story hasn’t been reported at all in the British media. I’m not surprised that Sikhs (and Hindus come to that) want this point made clear. As I’ve commented before I live in Britain and until last year lived in West London where there are many Sikhs/Hindus. The average Sikh/Hindu is as peaceful as the average “Briton” (I acknowledge that most actually have British citizenship!). Their values are broadly the same as those of British heritage. They are not a problem in our society. The problem we have is the Muslim population and their values and beliefs.
