Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Couple Tries to Dispel Iran’s “Bad Rap,” Goes to Jail

Sep 28, 2019 4:00 pm By Robert Spencer

The latest victims of the Left’s fantasy world.

The story has invited more ridicule than sympathy: an Australian couple has been arrested in Iran after only traveling there in the first place to “try to break the stigma around travelling to countries which get a bad wrap [sic] in the media.” Jolie King and Mark Firkin should have known better, but they are by no means the first naïve Westerners to mock that ridiculed the idea that “the world is a big, scary place” and then place themselves in harm’s way. Those were the words of Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan, an American couple that was murdered by Islamic State (ISIS) jihadis last year while biking through Tajikistan.

As naïve as all four of these people certainly are or were, the responsibility for their plight lies not just with the Islamic Republic of Iran or ISIS, but also with the Leftist world in which they moved and lived. The Left’s leaders constructed a fantasy world, because Leftist ideas are dead on the drawing board without it.

In this fantasy world, Islam is peace. Borders and nation-states are unwelcome relics of a bygone age, because people are good everywhere — with the exception of Donald Trump and the “far-right.”

Austin and Geoghegan made this clear as they embarked on their journey. Austin, an employee of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Geoghegan, who worked at Georgetown University, decided two years ago to leave their jobs and go on a bike ride around the world. They kept a blog about their journey, on which Austin wrote:

You watch the news and you read the papers and you’re led to believe that the world is a big, scary place. People, the narrative goes, are not to be trusted. People are bad. People are evil. People are axe murderers and monsters and worse.

I don’t buy it. Evil is a make-believe concept we’ve invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans holding values and beliefs and perspectives different than our own — it’s easier to dismiss an opinion as abhorrent than strive to understand it. Badness exists, sure, but even that’s quite rare. By and large, humans are kind. Self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes, but kind. Generous and wonderful and kind. No greater revelation has come from our journey than this.

Yes, Austin and Geoghegan were unwise to carry this Pollyannish philosophy into Muslim Central Asia, just as King and Firkin were to take it to Iran, but they didn’t originate it. Where did Austin get the idea that “evil is a make-believe concept”? Most likely in today’s universities, which are saturated with moral relativism, contemptuous of absolutes, and dogmatically convinced that there is no dispute between people that can’t be settled by mutually respectful “dialogue.”

This perspective dominates contemporary culture, and is taken for granted even at the highest level. When Barack Obama and John Kerry entered into negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran during Obama’s disastrous post-American presidency, they were working upon the assumption that it was wrong to think that people “are not to be trusted” and that “people are evil.”

Obama and Kerry were essentially embracing the idea that “evil is a make-believe concept.” That the mullahs were perhaps “self-interested sometimes, myopic sometimes,” but ultimately good-hearted. The Leftist intelligentsia was and still is unanimous in applauding that initiative.

Likewise, it is a matter of dogmatic certainty for the Left that Islam is a religion of peace, and that only racist, bigoted “Islamophobes” think otherwise. Why should King and Firkin have had any reason to be concerned about traveling through the Islamic Republic of Iran? All it had was a “bad wrap.”

Those who don’t believe that “evil is a make-believe concept” are subject to furious and concerted demonization. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) — and the establishment media that treats the SPLC as if it were a reliable source — sees only one group of genuinely evil people in the world. Those who recognize that there are evil forces in the world that are set against the United States, and who want to protect Americans against Islamic jihadists, criminal migrants, and more, are the only evil ones. King and Firkin no doubt had nothing but contempt for such “intolerance” and “hate” manifested by foes of jihad terror and unrestricted illegal immigration.

The Left forces people to believe these fantasies, lest they be charged with “hatred” and “bigotry.” The people who filled King’s and Firkin’s heads with this nonsense bullied them towards their deaths.

The problem with these fantasies is that reality keeps breaking through. Jolie King and Mark Firkin have discovered too late that some people are evil. Will the West rid itself of the Leftist fantasies that led to their imprisonment before many more end up in similar predicaments?

The Left seems largely unaware of it’s arrogance; it relies completely on it’s own claims about Islam rather than learning about what Islam claims about itself.

So what’s there about, “Because of what my family, friends and culture have taught me, it is my “opinion” there’s nothing wrong with torturing, killing, beheading and blowing up people who don’t hold my religious beliefs; expecting financial support from, and/or swindling people who don’t hold my religious beliefs; raping men, women, little girls and little boys who don’t hold my religious beliefs; that I am superior to people who don’t hold my religious beliefs; oh and I can also kill, rape, rob and swindle, men, women and children of my religion if they don’t cater to my particular brand of said religion.” that I’m not supposed to find abhorrent?

Understand, lest one thinks I am not compassionate (hey, who of sense and knowledge could doubt that I am?—but I digress), if I had the power to rescue this couple from their present state I would do so most surely. But thereafter, I would go into detail with them on what colossal fools they have been.

Enough said for now. But I will be back because I will NEVER let the maliciousness of Islam, and the foolhardiness of Westerners who continue to defend Islam, get away with their lies and ignorance. NEVER so long as I am alive, which the last time I checked I still am.

And may the COMPLETELY fictional Allah strike me dead tonight if Islam is the true faith (God help us if it is because it would mean God is a jerk and we live in a bizarre universe).

Pondering this ridiculous PC lunacy, I was thinking that exact same thing, KWJ, just alter your choice of wording. Surely this could be tried in a court of law if it had to come to it. IE, if some one was in the country illegally (by either by having overstayed their visa, or by having crossed the border or entered the country illegally, etc) and you were charged and dragged into court for having referred to such a person as an ‘illegal alien’, or ‘illegal entity’, or illegitimate resident’, or similar, it could be argued that you were doing nothing more than stating truth and factuality. It could be asked of the court and the presiding judge or magistrate if it were now not only against the law to state or declare a truth or a factuality, but also a felony in what (heretofore legitimate) words of the English language vocabulary we might freely have chosen to express that truth or factuality?!
Very recently a butchery business here in Australia was ‘dragged over the coals’ by the Advertising Standards Authority nazis, over their shopfront and on line advertisement stating that they sell only non-halal certification [or was the wording non-halal ‘certified’?] Meats – the Advertising Standards Authority nazis having received a big sniff and whinge from some complainant in their their complaints in-box that this was being ‘islamophobic’ – and were therefore ordered by the ASA nazis to immediately cease and desist using this ad on the (pedantic technicality) grounds that there is no such thing as ‘non-halal certification’.
Anyway, the said business, has complied with the sniffy order of the ASA nazis by rewording their advertisement to just saying they only sell ‘non halal’ meats (minus the alleged offending pedantic technicality). And ,so far, since then with the alyered wording, it seems the ASA nazis have not had any legal leg to stand on in which to engage in any further bullying of the company.

King/Firkin are pretty lucky to have landed in an Iranian jail. As opposed to getting lynched by some Islamic lynch mob.

On the Austin/Geoghegan issue though, I’m not so sure. The ex Soviet stans did become free to be Islamic, but none of them have gone all the way, and many still have Soviet era regimes in place to prevent that. In the case of Tajikistan, that country’s been in a civil war, so it may not have been a good choice for them. But while Islam has been attempting a comeback in the region, the regimes there have been battling to curb it, and the average citizen ain’t the wild eyed ‘rage-boy’ image that they find w/ their neighbors to the south. Otoh, this couple, being DC residents, should have known better than to bike across a country that had undergone a civil war b/w Islam and Communism.

That said, I hope that neither the US nor Australia try to spring King/Firkin out from jail while trying to negotiate w/ the Iranians on other things, be it their nuke program, Hormuz shipping lanes, attacks on Saudi oil installations or anything else

Of course, there are areas that should be avoided do to government policy too, some states and cities where poor public hygiene is encouraged and not observing the law ( well, some law) is tolerated, and common criminal activity is allowed, etc. But, even if our erstwhile couple participates in some of the local traditions (yesterdays taboos) I doubt that this couple would end up arrested or in jail. Of course, the people of some of these countries might, indeed, be OK, (I’m sure some Iranians and North Koreans and others would be decent people, the poor buggers) but the regimes are appalling. All you can say about people like this couple, who may be intelligent in some areas of study, is that common sense just isn’t that common, and this couple lack common sense and are out of touch with the harsh realities of life. No hearing, no wonder such people get in trouble. The people who do not have to go near these terrible regions are the lucky ones. If they had visited the jihadis in jails in the West, they could at least have tried out their ideas in relative safety. I recall how Normal Mailer supported the parole of a man in prison. After he was released he soon murdered a waiter at a restaurant because the waiter did not let him use the staff toilet. These people are simply asking for trouble.

The mistake made by both couples is resultant on the culture of disbelief, In God (All values are equal), in satan (there is no such thing as evil), and in hell (optimism and benevolence are sufficient to avoid bad consequences). In part their perilous error stems from a false conception of virtue that sees eg. tolerance and intolerance as opposites, where in fact tolerance is the prudential mid-point between absolute brittle intolerance and supine acceptance of anything. It is imperative that the west recover the Aristotelian-Thomist concept that error lies at the extremes, and the facility of clearly determining them. Thus open borders are an extreme position, as are iron curtains, whilst controlled borders are the wise mean. We largely have a false conception of centrism based on a head count of opinions, and so a disdain for centrism as the wishy-washy fence sitting attempt to accommodate all idiots. True centrism is based on logic, and may well be the most rarely held position, but no less correct for all that, and worthy of the most militant defence and vigorous polemical advancement. Logic is our sharpest weapon, as the Logos is our surest refuge; this is not unrelated to the use of lexiconoclasm as the preferred weapon of the antinomian left.

I think of the Centrist position in the following way. Imagine an equilateral triangle (three equal sides and angles).

The left-side angle is left-wing totalitaranism (Marxist-Leninism, etc and these days Xi Jinping’s China).

The right-side angle is right-wing totalitarianism (Mussolini, Hitler, Franco and various other juntas that come along).

The top angle is religious totalitarianism in the form of oppressive theocracies. Several religions are capable of this, but these days the most powerful and dangerous one is Islam.

In the central space of the triangle lies the Centrist position. It repudiates all three kinds of totalitarianism and emphasises democratic openness by means of freedom of speech and assembly, civil rights, a free media, the separation of religion and state, and so on.

Unlike the Left, the Centrist position does not tolerate Islam, because it clearly sees the need to protect an open society from the forces that would undermine and eventually overthrow it. The open society should not be a naive one.

They have now realized that evil is not a make-believe concept. Those different values, beliefs and perspectives include slicing the necks of naive delusional non-Muslims.

‘That’s funny right there…I don’t care who you are’..

A Somali born Canadian journalist tried that as well.. She went back to Somalia this year to film a documentary about how wonderful and rich the culture of Somalia is today.. She was assassinated along with several others in her crew, and others..

    ‘Stupid is as STUPID does’..

It was quite stupid for them to fly a drone in Iran, which is what they were arrested for per the BBC article. They had been flying it around Asia when traveling but apparently didn’t study up on Iran. It’s like the fools who hiked over the mountains once and we’re arrested as spies.

How they traveled with a drone is beyond me. I find drones obnoxious.

Iran doesn’t like journalists, Iranians with duel citizenship visiting family in Iran, people working for NGOs or human rights groups nor military. They arrested a blogger once who wrote about human rights, is all the could come up with about why he was arrested. You also don’t want to be taking photos in areas. Otherwise it’s a country worth visiting.

These folks travel to show countries that get a bad rep that they aren’t bad. We know most countries aren’t entirely bad-the people or sights. But some countries have people that like to kidnap or kill foreigners besides their own people. Also with the political tensions you can’t do something stupid. A bunch of countries can get their visa right at the Tehran airport; Americans have to go through the Pakistani consulate in D.C. to get a visa for Iran. Who wants to deal with the Pakistanis given those Twitter messages, etc.?

I once went into a Mexican takeaway and ordered a quesadilla. I got a bad wrap. 🙂

They will be encouraged in these fantasies and to go on these trips by their Left-wing professors, precisely because the extreme-Left want them to be captured and used as hostages for the release of imprisoned jihadis in the West.

Left-wing politics is about controlling humans, not protecting them – the individual human is expendable in their view. What value is placed on human life by the likes of Prof Jonathan Brown of Georgia University who speaks up for slavery ? another who attacked conservative students with a bike-chain ? the faculty-members at Oxford University who defended serial rapist Tariq Ramadan ? or Cambridge University who recently invited the Malaysian Prime Minister – a Jew-baiting Hitler-enthusiast – to make an address recently, and obligingly sniggered-along to his anti-Semitic comments ?

None – unless it’s their own.
