Interesting! Human brotherhood, eh? Will they renounce these Qur’an verses and others like them?
“Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the most vile of created beings.” (Qur’an 98:6)
“Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are those who have disbelieved, and they will not believe.” (Qur’an 8:55)
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are ruthless against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves.” (Qur’an 48:29)
“O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them.” (Qur’an 9:73)
“O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness.” (Qur’an 9:123)
“And kill them wherever you find them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, for persecution is worse than slaughter.” (Qur’an 2:191)
“They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.” (Qur’an 4:89)
“And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Qur’an 9:5)
“Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Last Day, and do not hold forbidden what has been forbidden by Allah and his messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of truth, of the People of the Book, until they pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” (Qur’an 9:29).
“Egypt to Hold ‘Human Brotherhood in Islam’ Int’l Conference,” International Qur’an News Agency, September 19, 2019:
TEHRAN (IQNA) – An international conference on “Islam’s invitation to human brotherhood for reaching peace in society” will be held in December at the Islamic Studies Faculty of Al-Azhar University in Alexandria, Egypt….
Stressing the virtues of human brotherhood and its principles, investigating the challenges in achieving it, the necessity of strengthening moderation and peaceful coexistence, interfaith and inter-civilization dialogue, promoting the culture of global peace and fighting extremism and extremist discourse are among the objectives of the conference.
The participants will also discuss other themes including the development of moderate discourse and fighting religious extremism, taking joint responsibilities to realize global peace, activating the role of civil rights institutes and human rights organizations, activating the role of religious educational and media institutes to disseminate the culture of brotherhood and peace in society and monitoring extremist thoughts and dogmatic viewpoints which are dangerous for the peace in society.
DHazard says
“…monitoring extremist thoughts…”
The idiots who run the EU would LOVE to be able to monitor thoughts. And some of them would die from joy if they had the ability to know people’s thoughts before they thought them. We’re actually heading that way, a dystopian world with very little external conflict but where unelected bureaucrats know more about you than you do, and wield that power with all the pettiness their cowardly hearts can bear.

HOW CAN ISLAM SUPPORT ‘BROTHERHOOD’ between people if Islam doesn’t contain the Golden Rule? Islam imposes a two-tier society where Kafirs are always unequal to Muslims.
12 verses in the Koran say that Muslims may not be a true friend of a Kafir. Mohammed attacked ALL of his neighbors.
Brain physiology is such that we feel good when we help others. The Golden Rule, treating others as we would be treated, is hard wired into our physical makeup. However, Mohammed attacked each and every neighbor. Attacking your neighbors is not an expression of the Golden Rule. But, there is no Golden Rule in Islam.

Mortimer, I agree with Bill Warner. The brains of normal people are ‘wired’ such that we get enjoyment and fulfillment out of helping others – hence the golden rule is fairly ubiquitous among human communities across the world. But the brains of psychopaths are different. Psychopaths are the ‘Mr Hydes’ of this world who have a psychological disconnect in their brains. It’s obviously a dysfunctional limbic system (and quite likely a defective amygdala), which prevents them from having normal empathetic reactions to the plight of others, or remorse for their actions which might cause harm. I have known many psychopaths, but never once have I ever encountered one who could be helped by any form of psychotherapy. It would seem that a complete brain transplant is the only solution – and good luck with that!
Unfortunately, Islam was founded by a psychopath, and it is still run by psychopaths – such as these clowns at Al-Azhar, pushing for “an international conference for reaching peace”. As Robert asks, “Will they renounce those Qur’an verses and others like them?” Most jihadis are also psychopaths, which is why they can happily carry out their barbaric acts against anyone who they regard as ‘unIslamic’. When people argue that Islam should be allowed the same constitutional freedoms afforded to other religions, they are effectively arguing for the legalization of criminal behavior – and the eventual demise of Western culture.
Islam is a criminal ideology which has no place in a civilized society.

“Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them, put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]….Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for the Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other ayahs and hadiths urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all this mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

Mohammed ended his letters with the following two words: “Aslim, Taslam!” (Surrender, be safe).
It virtually means: “Surrender or face death.”

Can we get real now?
The Koran and Sharia don’t teach peace with kafirs, but warfare against the disbelievers until victory over them is achieved.
Koran 48:29 is a verse that clearly and unmistakably, perhaps even deliberately, contradicts the Golden Rule: Koran 48.29 “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah; Those with him are VIOLENT (ashiddaa’) against the unbelievers (kufaar), Compassionate amongst themselves.” This verse has no time limit.
Sharia law teaches: “The caliph FIGHTS all other peoples until they become Muslim”, Book O: Justice, Chapter O-9.0: Jihad, Reliance of the Traveller.
The Koran teaches “FIGHTING TO THE DEATH” (q-t-l) … “And FIGHT (q-t-l) them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief in Mohammed or belief in any religion other than Islam) and the religion (government system) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world). But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do. – Koran 8:39
It should be clear that the above doesn’t teach co-existence.

Al Azhar University said they teach what ISIS does. Has Egypt gotten a handle on the persecution of the Copts there? How’s Pakistan doing? Iraq? Nigeria? I don’t think human brotherhood is in their repetoire.
It might have been in Bat Ye’or’s book that they have conferences after conferences and form all these various committees or spout this kind of lip service and discuss “Islamophobia.”
Someone online was accusing me of dehumanizing Muslims by lumping in Muslims with extremists. I wasn’t even talking about extremists. It’s the Qur’an, ahadith and Islam that dehumanizes people. By my standards it’s the Qur’an that’s extreme; it’s 7th/8th century war and dehumanizing enemies, slaves, women, unbelievers.
If they want some kind of HUMAN brotherhood then they need to say the Qur’an and Muhammad are not perfect and Muhammad is not to be emulated. It is indefensible to say the Qur’an doesn’t lend itself to HUMAN brotherhood at all.
The mendacity and hypocrisy of Muslims is rampant. The Muslims who don’t agree with the dehumanization in the Qur’an should get some courage to say so or like in Iraq and elsewhere they too will be perpetual victims in several ways; physically, economically and mentally.

It’s useful to remember that barbaric Islam was invented 6 centuries after the enlightenment brought to the world by Christ. Islam should be referred to as pre-Christian and then perhaps the reality of this barbaric ideology will sink in.
gravenimage says
So true, Terry–you sometimes find apologists for Islam saying that Muslims had no choice but to have a violent creed, since the dark ages were so brutal–but this completely ignores the example of Christianity. (It also ignores Muslims not civilizing their ugly beliefs for 1400 years).

Admittedly, there have been uncountable events in recent years which justify the skepticism apparent in earlier comments but there have been other events and movements which might, just might, suggest that this conference could be seen slightly favourably. I have in mind declarations by Al Sisi, Egyptian President, that Islam needs to modernize. See https://www.jpost.com/Opinion/President-Sisis-religious-war-573361 for a somewhat unsympathetic article on his efforts. Various leaders of small groups in the West are also calling for re-interpretations. See Christine Douglas-Williams’s The Challenge of Modernizing Islam: Reformers speak out and the obstacles they face.
It’s worth noting that the announcement from IQNA states that the conference will also discuss such other topics as “… activating the role of civil rights institutes and human rights organizations, … monitoring extremist thoughts and dogmatic viewpoints which are dangerous for the peace in society.”. It is just possible that some small attention is being paid in Al Azhar to the persistent bad press that Islam gets outside the Islamic world, thanks partly to Robert’s work, and that it is looking at ways by which to counter this in some way other than insisting that no changes are necessary.
This might be an important conference but admittedly, it might not be. We will be able to have an opinion only when the discussions have been reported in English in such detail that any small movements from traditional positions are detectable, assuming there are some. In the mean time, a wait and see attitude might be healthier that automatic dismissal. Even the holding of the conference with such terms of business as quoted above, could be regarded as a first very small step. Change, if any, will come at a glacial pace.
On the subject of the glacial rate of change of religion, let’s remember that the Catholic church fought the work of Copernicus and Galileo for centuries and that of Darwin for about a hundred and fifty years. However, today the Pope recognizes that the modern sciences based upon their discoveries are true. There are millions of educated Muslims who also know that these sciences simply cannot be ignored for ever.

…………………………
Peter, Al Sisi is not an Islamic cleric. Note, also, that Egypt still allows the persecution of Christians, and FGM is widespread. None of this is particularly “modern”. Al Sisi is better than the Muslim Brotherhood would have been, but this does not mean he is apt to reform Islam.

Muslims are not apt to listen to Infidels–or to Muslims they consider “heretics”. Most Muslim reformers, no matter how mild, are under constant death threat from their more orthodox coreligionists. Also, often the recommended “reform” is skin deep. Mostly they are preaching to non-Muslims.

This is mostly a reference to Muslim states not wanting to see violent Jihad waged in their own countries, because it is a threat to the powers that be. This *does not* mean that such powers actually oppose Jihad–they just don’t think they should be considered valid targets.
Remember that Al Azhar would not even say that ISIS is un-Islamic.

I think it is valid to look at conference attendees track record. If it turns out that Al Azhar and the other attendees all disavow Islam’s violence, antisemitism, hatred of Christians, and Muslim supremacism and desire to force everyone to submit to Islam, then I will take notice. Until then, it would be naive to consider this a good faith effort.

There is nothing in the teachings of Christianity that rejects science–these were the actions of various churches. But Islam itself is shot through with violence and–and I can see no evidence that these Islamic institutions are trying to change Islam’s legacy.

To gravenimage.
I have no major disagreement with what you wrote.
The utility of careful English translations of the presentations, proposals, speeches, recommendations, etc. made at the conference should be that Islam watchers are able either to confirm to themselves and to the world that there is no prospect of any change in the pronunciations of the most authoritative voices of Islam, thereby arming Islam’s critics in their battle with western apologists, or that a few small steps appear to be taken in the direction of modernization.
It is certainly too much to hope that “that Al Azhar and the other attendees all disavow Islam’s violence, antisemitism, hatred of Christians, and Muslim supremacism and desire to force everyone to submit to Islam” but if a few speakers make speeches in this direction against a carefully orchestrated background of non-condemnation, then such speeches could constitute the small step I am suggesting might, and only might, be taken.
In one sense, we critics of Islam can only win: either the most important voice of Islam reveal themselves as resistant to change as ever or they take a small step in the right direction.
