There has an Islamic revival sweeping Indonesia. So-called “born-again” Muslims are driving social change, as well as the economy. Sharia is fast becoming the center of every aspect of Indonesian life, featuring Muslim-targeted housing, Sharia banking and a soaring demand for halal food.
Invariably, with Islamic revival come the abuses that go hand-in-hand with it.
Indonesia is poised to pass a new penal code that criminalizes sex outside marriage and introduces stiff penalties for insulting the president’s dignity….Lawmakers said the new penal code, which would replace a Dutch colonial-era set of laws, is a long-overdue expression of Indonesian independence and religiosity.
Abusive laws under a new criminal code were set to be passed next week, but have now been delayed by Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo:
After an outpouring of opposition to many of its provisions from rights activists, women’s groups, legal experts and other Indonesians, Mr. Joko announced that he had asked lawmakers to drop the legislation and leave the matter for the next Parliament, which will be seated in October.
Under these laws, Indonesia’s “substantial Christian, Hindu and Buddhist minorities” will be increasingly persecuted, while millions will risk jail for sex-related offenses.
Everywhere in the world that Islamic law is applied, intolerance and gross human rights violations follow, and of course, accusations of “Islamophobia” for calling it out.
“Millions may risk jail as Indonesia looks to criminalize sex outside wedlock,” Reuters, September 19, 2019:
JAKARTA – Indonesia is poised to pass a new penal code that criminalizes sex outside marriage and introduces stiff penalties for insulting the president’s dignity.
Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country and has substantial Christian, Hindu and Buddhist minorities but has seen a recent trend toward deeper religious piety and conservative Islamic activism.
After parliament and the government agreed on a final draft on Wednesday, four parliamentarians said the new criminal code will be adopted in the next week.
Lawmakers said the new penal code, which would replace a Dutch colonial-era set of laws, is a long-overdue expression of Indonesian independence and religiosity.
“The state must protect citizens from behavior that is contrary to the supreme precepts of God,” said Nasir Djamil, a politician from the Prosperous Justice Party. He said leaders of all religions had been consulted on the changes, given that Indonesia’s founding ideology was based on belief in God.
Under the proposed laws, unmarried couples who “live together as a husband and wife” could be jailed for six months or face a maximum fine of 10 million rupiah ($710) — three months’ salary for many Indonesians.
A prosecution can proceed if a village chief, who heads the lowest tier of government, files a complaint with police and if parents or children of the accused do not object. Parents, children and spouses can also lodge a complaint.
The inclusion of the new power for village chiefs was warranted because “the victim of adultery is also society,” said another lawmaker, Teuku Taufiqulhadi.
The Institute for Criminal Justice Reform, an NGO, said millions of Indonesians could be ensnared by the new laws. It noted a study indicating that 40 percent of Indonesian adolescents engage in pre-marital sexual activity.
“Across the board, this is a ratcheting up of conservatism. It’s extremely regressive,” said Tim Lindsey, director of the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society.
A maximum one-year prison term also can be applied to a person who has sex with someone who is not their spouse and a close family member lodges a complaint.
The law also affects homosexuals because gay marriage is not recognized in Indonesia. The code establishes prison terms for those found to commit “obscene acts,” defined as violating norms of decency and politeness through “lust or sexuality,” whether by heterosexuals or gay people…..

The Libtards defending Islam as benign will now see that it isn’t, even in ‘moderate’ Indonesia … if they are paying attention. Most likely, however, Libtards will just screen Sharia law’s cruelties out of their consciousness until the beheadings begin. Eventually, there will be weekly videos of whippings of adulterers streaming out of Indonesia. (Chant after me: Islam is vibrant multiculturalism … Islam is our ally … Sharia law is benign, and for Muslims only … etc)
‘Moderate’ Islam of Indonesia? Well, they can’t say that anymore.
Yoo hoo, George Clooney … are you going to stop using Indonesian-owned luxury hotels to protest?
revereridesagain says
It’s on the other side of the world. They’ll ignore it. The sharia-compliant media won’t cover it. Indonesia is not a major tourist destiny. And if all else fails there is always “racism”.
Carolyne says
Nah—Libtards won’t even be aware of it . They only read and listen to articles with which they agree.

From now on, the president of Indonesia will be ABOVE CRITICISM. There will be dozens of journalists in prison at all times. Just like ‘moderate’ Islamic Turkey.
But this is what the Un-Democratic Party wants in America, isn’t it? They want an Un-Democratic president-for-life too, who is above all criticism ! How jealous the Un-Democrats must be.

What is the problem? The Muslim god Allah is most merciful and accomodating all male sexual desires abundantly demonstrated in Prophet Muhammad’s life.
Allah did something completely alien to the biblical God Elohim, he prescribed the written procedure for short term sexual relations like 72 hours renewable. In this perspective I cannot understand where the problem is for any proper self righteous Muslim, unless, of course he never cared to find out what the Koran says.
Don McKellar says
Sounds like there will be a fresh new wave of terrorists coming out of there. That is what happens whenever moslems are “born again”.
Angemon says
For the time being… In any case, islamic apologists love to flaunt Indonesia as a place where islamic expansion didn’t happen by the sword. Does that make any difference for non-muslims living under sharia?…
Christie says
Expansion didnt happen by the sword? Have you ever heard Bali, a Hindu-majority island in Indonesia? Many of Balinese ancestors were Javanese who fled Java due to *cough* decline to embrace a religion 🙂

THE CONVERSION OF INDONESIA WAS LED BY CONQUEST …
Wiki: “Initially, the spread of Islam was slow and gradual.[4] Though historical documents are incomplete, the limited evidence suggests that the spread of Islam accelerated in the 15th century, as the military power of Melaka Sultanate in Malay Peninsular today Malaysia and other Islamic Sultanates dominated the region aided by episodes of Muslim coup such as in 1446, wars and superior control of maritime trading and ultimate markets.
(The process was actually led by a military conquest of formerly Hindu lands) … a clear turning point occurred when the Hindu empire Majapahit in Java fell to the Islamised Demak Sultanate. In 1527, the Muslim ruler renamed newly conquered Sunda Kelapa as Jayakarta (meaning “precious victory”) which was eventually contracted to Jakarta.”

WHAT! You mean I just sat up real late here composing a comment for nearly TWO HOURS (about Bali and Suharto and heaps of historical stuff) only to be told it has been ‘denied’ when finally I hit the ‘post’ button? WELL F**K THAT!
gravenimage says
What? I’ve seen a “denied” message. You might want to contact Jihad Watch at the “Contact Us” box and ask what the problem was.

The Quran and the Bible were written in the old times when there was no condom, people didn’t want children to grow up without father and men wanted to be sure that the children are really from them. But now its 2019.

Here in Australia, this possible new law has received a lot of attention, because so many Australians go on holidays to Bali, because it is so close to Australia. Australian commentators are saying that it will probably apply to the tourists. People have mostly been joking and saying, well, there goes the holiday in Bali, and I also heard someone, more or less jokingly, saying, well, who the hell is going to go around checking on unmarried holiday makers having sex in their hotels, etc. I suspect a law like this won’t apply to Bali, which I think is a Hindu island, but part of Indonesia, because destroying the tourist trade there would be a huge economic cost to Indonesia. Such an extremely repressive law is certainly a very bad sign for the Indonesian people. Islam always seems to get more repressive and harsher. It never seems to go in the opposite direction and become more mellow.
Watto35 says
You may be closer to Bali than most of us but Islam rarely allows economics to disrupt their diabolical religious schemes. Forty years ago Lebanon was a wealthy, pleasant, Mediterranean country where moslems and Christians seem to live amicably together. It might be better if Australians now found another holiday base.
tim gallagher says
Thanks for the comment. You’re probably right, Watto35. I’ve never been to Bali and have never wanted to go there. It seems so overcrowded with tourists. I hear that it has been a pleasant place, probably because it is a fairly mellow Hindu type place, but there was that appalling Muslim terrorist attack, when a bomb went off in a nightclub there (I think it was way back in 2002), killing around 200, mainly western tourists. I’m relying on memory, but I think close to 100 were Australians. I would never go to any Muslim country. I don’t want to give them any of my money. These days, I’m a bit too old and unhealthy to want to travel to any far away destination. I thought Indonesia might be so hard up for money that they wouldn’t start targeting tourists to Bali and killing the place as a money spinner. Some Australians who go to Bali, absolutely off their faces on booze and drugs, do behave appallingly. Recently, there was a TV news report which showed an Australian man, drunk as a skunk, who flew through the air and karate kicked a local Balinese man, who was driving past on a motor scooter, and knocked him flying. The Australian guy is, deservedly, off to gaol for a long sentence. The footage was unbelievable.
gravenimage says
Yes–it is not just non-Muslim Indonesians who will suffer under these laws, but also tourists. Deeply concerning.
