“‘ISI and Pakistan Army trained al-Qaeda and all these groups to fight in Afghanistan. There were always links, there had to be links because they trained them,’ Imran Khan said at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. PM Imran Khan’s statement is seen by many an admission of Pakistan’s Army’s support to terror groups like al-Qaeda to fight in Afghanistan against the Soviet forces with the help of the United States (US).”
Yes, the US aided in this, as the government was as clueless and willfully ignorant of the nature of the jihad threat as much then as it is now.
“However, it must be noted that al-Qaeda was not formed during the Soviet War.”
There were jihad groups there, out of which al-Qaeda arose.
“ISI trained al-Qaeda to fight in Afghanistan, admits Pakistan PM Imran Khan,” by Hamza Ameer, India Today, September 25, 2019 (thanks to Henry):
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is in the United States for the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) session, has admitted that it was the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan top spy agency, which trained al-Qaeda to fight in Afghanistan during the Soviet war.
“ISI and Pakistan Army trained al-Qaeda and all these groups to fight in Afghanistan. There were always links, there had to be links because they trained them,” Imran Khan said at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
PM Imran Khan’s statement is seen by many an admission of Pakistan’s Army’s support to terror groups like al-Qaeda to fight in Afghanistan against the Soviet forces with the help of the United States (US). However, it must be noted that al-Qaeda was not formed during the Soviet War.
It was after the exit of the Soviet forces that al-Qaeda was formed and claimed its territorial power in Afghanistan.
However, Imran Khan’s statement that Pakistan trained militant groups during the Soviet War, who later transformed into al-Qaeda, would be the right and factually correct.
“The resistance was organised by ISI training these militants, who were invited for jihad against the Soviet Union. And so, we created these militant groups to fight the Soviets. They were indoctrinated that fighting foreign occupation is jihad. But now, when the US arrived in Afghanistan, it was supposed to be terrorism. So Pakistan took a real battering in this,” Imran Khan said….

The heading of this article ,alone, reveals much ,as the title put it “Pakistan’s Prime Minister admits: Pakistani spy service and army trained al-Qaeda in Afghanistan”
After all Pakistan is a Sunni/Muslim nation and the jihad terror entity is a Sunni/Muslim Islamic terror organization. It’s very easy to connect the dots.
As the former US Defense Secretary James Mattis’ remark that he considered Pakistan to be “the most dangerous” among all countries he had dealt with,..”
Furthermore , with that successful US plain to have the Navy SEAL’s exterminate that al-Qaeda terrorist chief ,Osama bin Laden , the American military intelligence staff ,and others, who knew about this plain to eliminate that Muslim terrorist fiend , understood not to inform any Pakistan official about it or they would tip bin Laden off.
Thus Pakistan is not really a friend of America.

Since WWII it has been troublesome to identify who the enemies are and who poses the greatest threat. Also the decisions as to what actions should or should not be taken have too often been faulty, Unfortunately the guess work has too often been disastrously erroneous..

The Communists were always a pretty good bet–and as is increasingly obvious, Muslim nations as well.
Infidel says
One thing that the Tu Quoque crowd misses while blaming the US/CIA for al Qaeda or the Taliban: it simply wasn’t true. When the US backed Jihadist enemies of the Soviets, the Jihadist warlord that both the US and Gen Zia of Pakistan backed was Gulbadin Heqmatyar, of Hizb-e-Islami. Like the Taliban, that too was a Pathan/Pashtun based militia, and that too was committed to Jihad and an Islamic Afghanistan.
However, when Benazir Bhutto came to power after Gen Zia’s death, she had an agenda of reversing everything that Gen Zia did, since she hated him for her father’s execution. So she pulled support for Heqmatyar, and so did the US. But she, or her ISI, started building up the Taliban from Pashto refugees in Pakistan, and they started their jihad in Afghanistan. Along the line, they joined forces w/ Osama.
So no, the US was not one of the parties that inadvertently enabled 9/11 by supporting the Taliban or al Qaeda
Don McKellar says
And Reagan had the US back the Taliban. There was even a Rambo movie … remember???
gravenimage says
Yes, the US was foolish for considering these thugs to be freedom fighters against the Soviets–but few in the West knew much about the threat of Islam at the time. Surely Don McKellar is not claiming that Pakistan was ignorant about Islam?
Infidel says
Actually, the underlying question was a tough one even for today: which was/is more dangerous? Communism or Islam?
gravenimage says
True, Infidel–they are both hideous totalitarian creeds. Yes, it is hard to say which is worse–certainly, Communism was overall a bigger threat at the time.

“However, it must be noted that al-Qaeda was not formed during the Soviet War…It was after the exit of the Soviet forces that al-Qaeda was formed and claimed its territorial power in Afghanistan.”
This is incorrect. Al_Qaeda was founded in Peshawar Pakistan in 1988, I don’t know the exact date, by Osama bin Laden and other mujahidin who had fought in the Soviet-Afghan War. The last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989. An Afghan civil war continued until the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan government eventually fell in 1992. The Taliban was founded in 1994. I don’t know why author Hamza Ameer misstates these facts.
John says
Al-Qaeda is a militant Sunni Islamist multi-national organization founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden/ After years of supporting the Afghan mujahideen, Osama bin Laden and some of his top associates meet in a suburb of Peshawar, Pakistan. With Soviet forces withdrawing from Afghanistan, the idea of a global jihad suddenly seems possible, and al Qaeda, literally “the Base,” is born. “We used to call the training camp al Qaeda,” bin Laden would later recall. “And the name stayed.”

“The United States has poured billions of
dollars into Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts…
Much of the money went to buy conventional
military equipment for the constant struggle
with India, and thus did little to help
Pakistan to fight Al Qaeda or other jihadists.
Corrupt officials siphoned off much of the
aid, and the money did not significantly
improve Pakistan’s ability to fight terrorism.”

PERSONAL COMMENT:
Expecting Pakistan to fight against Islamic
terrorism is like expecting the KKK to fight
for the civil rights of African-Americans.
Expecting Pakistan to fight against Islamic
terrorism is like expecting neo-Nazis to fight
for the civil rights of Jews.
Expecting Pakistan to fight against Islamic
terrorism is totally irrational and illogical.
