Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

The Ahmadi Muslims: A Curious Sect

Sep 7, 2019 10:00 am By Hugh Fitzgerald

With an Ahmadi Muslim apologist, Qasim Rashid, running for the Virginia State Senate and charging his opponent with “Islamophobia,” it’s worthwhile to give this sect a closer look.

The Ahmadi Muslims are a curious sect. They make up only 1% of the world’s Muslims — if indeed we accept that they are Muslims at all. Because their founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, claimed in 1889 to be both a prophet who came after Muhammad, and the Mahdi, many orthodox Muslims do not accept Ahmadis as Muslims. Indeed, in Pakistan, where the most Ahmadis — four million — live, they are forbidden, by the Second Amendment to the Constitution, to identify themselves as Muslims. They have been subject to large-scale attacks in Pakistan, during the anti-Ahmadi riots in Lahore in 1953, and again in 1974, when dozens of Ahmadi mosques were demolished or set on fire around the country. The last large-scale anti-Ahmadiyya violence ending in many deaths was in 2010, when, during Friday prayers, 94 Ahmadis were killed and more than 120 were injured in nearly simultaneous attacks against two mosques in Lahore. In 2018, a historic Ahmadi mosque, as old as the movement itself, was torn down in Sialkot. And there have consistently been smaller attacks, on one or several Ahmadis at a time, killed for being heretics or Infidels.

Pakistan is not the only Muslim country to treat the Ahmadis as non-Muslims. Saudi Arabia forbids Ahmadis from living in the country. But among the foreign workers, some Ahmadis manage to slip in, and the Saudi government routinely conducts nationwide raids to locate and deport them. Nor does Saudi Arabia allow Ahmadis to make the Hajj to Mecca. Pakistan raises an additional barrier to Ahmadis performing the Hajj. It requires that all Muslims applying for a passport must denigrate the founder of the community, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, and declare that all Ahmadis are non-Muslims. This requirement, naturally, discourages some Ahmadis from applying for a passport.

Ahmadis have been persecuted, attacked, and banned in many other Muslim countries. In 1924, affiliation with the Ahmadiyya became a capital offense in Afghanistan. Since then, no Ahmadiyya Muslims have been reported in Afghanistan. In Algeria, the position of the Ahmadis has worsened in the last few years. In March 2016, Algerian authorities refused an attempt by Ahmadis to register as an association under Algerian law. In June 2016, a planned Ahmadi mosque was raided and shut down in Larbraa. Since March 2016, more than 280 Ahmadis have been arrested and have faced prosecution. Algerian officials have publicly called Ahmadis heretics and a threat to Algeria. In June 2016, the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Mohamed Aissa, described the Ahmadi presence in Algeria as part of a “prepared sectarian invasion.” In February 2017, he stated that Ahmadis are “not Muslim.” In April 2017, Ahmed Ouyahia, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s chief of cabinet, called on Algerians to “preserve the country from the Shia and Ahmadiyya sects.” In Bangladesh, in late 2003, several large, violent marches ended in the occupation of an Ahmadi mosque. In 2004, all Ahmadiyya publications were banned from the country. In India, Ahmadyyas are recognized by the government as Muslims, but they are not permitted by Muslims of other sects to sit on the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. In Indonesia, Ahmadi have been attacked and killed by mobs, and warned by the government not to try to spread their faith. In Malaysia, Ahmadis are forbidden from saying Friday Prayers at the central mosque, which also bears a large sign declaring that “Qadianis [Ahmadis] are not Muslims.”

In the U.K., Ahmadi shops have been vandalized, and Muslims instructed not to vote for Ahmadi candidates. Anti-Ahmadi hate leaflets have been distributed all over London. The Ummah Channel has broadcast interactive television programs on which religious leaders and callers alike said that Ahmadis should be killed. And Ahmadis, such as Asad Shah, have been killed by mainstream Muslims.

All of this shows that the Ahmadis are discriminated against, persecuted, and even killed, in many parts of the Islamic world. Yet the Ahmadis enthusiastically proselytize for Islam in the United States. They never discuss, in their meetings with non-Muslims, what Ahmadis endure at the hands of mainstream Muslims. Many of the Ask-A-Muslim-Anything events are put on by Ahmadis, who also conduct many of the Open-Mosque meetings. The Ahmadi sect is genuinely more peaceful in what it preaches about Jihad than are mainstream Muslims. Ahmadis stress their desire to spread Islam by non-violent means, and their outreach efforts to non-Muslims are sincere. But some of their spokesmen, such as the State Senate candidate Qasim Rashid and Harris Zafar, consistently defend Sunni Muslims, the very people who deny that Ahmadis are true Muslims.

Robert Spencer took on Qasim Rashid two days ago: “Qasim Rashid has for years been a professional liar, a one-man cottage industry of deception and hypocrisy. He has whitewashed Muhammad’s support for torture and the reality of jihad violence and Sharia oppression; dissembled about the Qur’an’s sanction of deception of unbelievers; lied about the presence of violent passages in the Qur’an; lied about the Qur’an’s sanction of beating disobedient women; lied about the nature of Sharia; called for limitations on the freedom of speech and expression to outlaw behavior and speech some Muslims may find offensive; and lied about Muhammad’s stance toward the persecution of Christians. He has even blamed Christianity for Islam’s death penalty for blasphemy. He has also claimed that ‘the teachings of Islam could help us prevent more sexual abuse scandals.’ When challenged about the ‘facts’ he has presented, Qasim Rashid (like virtually all other Islamic supremacists) responds with furious ad hominem contempt, but never answers the refutations of his articles on substantive ground — because, of course, he cannot do so.”

It’s hard to fathom the reasoning of these Ahmadi defenders of orthodox Islam. Perhaps they insist on defending Sunni Islam because they keep thinking that if they deploy their taqiyya convincingly, and if they proselytize not for Ahmadiyya Islam alone, but for mainstream Islam, that eventually they will be recognized by Muslims as full-fledged members of the Ummah. It’s a vain hope. The enmity toward them, because of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad’s claim to be the last prophet and the Mahdi, is ferocious and implacable.

There is another way. Why do the Ahmadi spokesmen not openly declare, in the physical security of the West, during these outreach sessions which the Ahmadis are so tirelessly organizing, how they differ from mainstream Muslims? For the difference is not just over the claims made by and for their founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, but also in their peaceful understanding of Jihad, an understanding quite different from that of mainstream Muslims.

According to Ahmadiyya beliefs, “Jihad can be divided into three categories: Jihad al-Akbar (Greater Jihad) is that against the self and refers to striving against one’s low desires such as anger, lust and hatred; Jihad al-Kabīr (Great Jihad) refers to the peaceful propagation of Islam, with special emphasis on spreading the true message of Islam by the pen; Jihad al-Asghar (Smaller Jihad) is an armed struggle only to be resorted to in self-defense under situations of extreme religious persecution whilst not being able to follow one’s fundamental religious beliefs, and even then only under the direct instruction of the Caliph. Ahmadi Muslims point out that as per Islamic prophecy, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad rendered Jihad in its military form as inapplicable in the present age as Islam, as a religion, is not being attacked militarily but through literature and other media, and therefore the response should be likewise. They believe that the answer of hate should be given by love.”

Concerning terrorism, the fourth Caliph of the Community wrote in 1989:

“As far as Islam is concerned, it categorically rejects and condemns every form of terrorism. It does not provide any cover or justification for any act of violence, be it committed by an individual, a group or a government.

Isn’t this the version of Islam with which we kaffirs just might be able to coexist? Why shouldn’t the Ahmadis spread the word of just how they differ from the mainstream on the matter of Jihad, and why those thinking of converting to Islam should recognize that Ahmadiyya Islam, with its emphasis on peaceful Jihad, and its forthright condemnation of terrorism,  truly is what mainstream Islam falsely claims to be?

Ahmadis should cease being apologists for mainstream Islam, as Qasim Rashid and Harris Zafar have so puzzlingly been, and instead should unembarrassedly promote only Ahmadiyya Islam. They should not defend Sunni Islam, whose members have so often persecuted, attacked, and murdered Ahmadis.

The Ahmadis are good at proselytizing, and as their numbers, influence, and power increase in the Western world — they are now the fastest-growing sect of Islam — they may perhaps be able to affect, for the better, the position of Ahmadis in Muslim countries. Some of those countries — especially in black Africa — are already well-disposed to the Ahmadis. It would be wonderful if Muslims in those places, disturbed by the violence and terrorism of mainstream Islam, were to turn to, and embrace, Ahmadiyya Islam. The Ahmadiyya Movement has won converts, despite the obvious danger Ahmadis face not just in the West, but among mainstream Muslims in such places as India, Indonesia, and Egypt. It can be seen as a kind of stepping-stone out of Islam for those who are dismayed by the violence in the orthodox version of the faith, but too afraid to become apostates outright. As for the world’s Infidels, they have a vested interest, too, in having Muslims in their own lands turn toward the Ahmadiyya Movement, for that would lessen the domestic menace of violence and terrorism.

If there were not 20 million Ahmadi in the world, but 100 million, it would be harder for orthodox Muslims to treat them with such contumely and murderous hate. But first, the Ahmadis must distance themselves completely from those in the Ahmadiyya Movement, such as Rashid and Zafar, who have been apologists for mainstream Islam. As for those Ahmadis who continue to serve as apologists for orthodox Islam, they should be held up, as Robert Spencer has done so devastatingly with Rashid and Zafar, for inspection, examination, and condemnation. Instead, Ahmadis should not attempt to hide, but instead openly discuss, the kinds of mistreatment (including murder), that Ahmadis have received from orthodox Muslims, and discuss, too, how very different from the mainstream view is the Ahmadi understanding of Jihad.

At these Open-Mosque meetings held by Ahmadis, whenever a stout defender of Islam, following the Qasim Rashid-Harris Zafar model, is conducting the event, visitors should come prepared to ask questions about two things. First, what are the precise differences in doctrine concerning Jihad and terrorism between the Ahmadis and all other Muslims? This will force the Ahmadi apologist to admit that mainstream Islam sanctions both violent Jihad and terrorism, and the Ahmadiyya Movement does neither. Second, a question about  the persecution, discrimination, and murder of Ahmadis by mainstream Muslims will remind visitors to the mosque of the cruelty and barbarousness  of Muslims, in dealing with those — in this case, the Ahmadis — who are seen as heretics, or even as Infidels, and thus deserving of such treatment.

What about Ahmadi efforts to convert non-Muslims in the West? Here we need to underline, for other Unbelievers, that the Ahmadis are not regarded as true Muslims in many Muslim countries. Whether by constitutional amendment (Pakistan), or  law (Saudi Arabia), or whipped-up popular sentiment (Indonesia), they are in many places discriminated against, persecuted, even murdered. They are not allowed to make the Hajj. Would-be converts in the West should know that joining the Ahmadiyya sect can be a dangerous thing. Surely that will dampen the enthusiasm of some.

We should wish the Ahmadis success in converting those who are already Muslims, wherever they may be, to a “kinder, gentler” form of Islam that may lead them eventually out of Islam altogether. But at the same time, we should wish that their proselytizing in the West not succeed among us, the still insubmissive Infidels, for whom embracing Ahmadiyya Islam would be a step in the wrong direction.

The above information surely refutes the ‘notion’ that Islam is a ‘religion of peace’. as claimed by both non Muslims, despite all the evidence to the contrary, and most Muslims alike.
If Muslims cannot tolerate even other Muslims who differ in their beliefs how is it a ROP.
Christians by and large tolerated other branches of Christianity, although as we know they did not in earlier centuries with disastrous consequences.

The leader of Ahmadis is called ‘caliph’ (a political title that is the equivalent of ‘caesar’.) A caliph is the ‘viceroy’ of the worldwide Islamic empire, ruling as the legal, political appointee of Allah.

Ahmaddiya is thus a supremacist theocracy, since ‘who can argue against Allah?’

Ahmadis maintain the delusion and fiction that ‘original’ Islam was pacifist and that the Sunnite and Shi’ite caliphs changed it to suit themselves. The historical record shows that the early caliphs followed both Mohammed’s teachings and his practices, so the Ahmadi narrative is a fantasy.

The pacifist jihad of Ahmadis is an oxymoron and the wishful thinking of the founder of the sect.

Ahmadis have never formed a government in any country, but if they did, I believe it would resemble every other Islamic government and would be similar in corruption, nepotism, high-handedness and discrimination against minorities.

Nice Ahmadiyya *pats on head*, good Ahmaddiay:

The problem of Palestine entered on a new phase after 1 December 1947 when, through the joint efforts of the United States and the USSR, the General Assembly most unjustly adopted its resolution recommending partition of Palestine. Hazrat Mirza Bashirud Din Mahmud Ahmad Sahib, Khalifatul Masih II, Head of the Ahmadiyya Movement, wrote two strong articles revealing the background of the partition of Palestine. The first of these was published on 28 November and the second on 11 December 1947.

We have received a tract which comprises an address of Al-Syed Mirza Mahmud Ahmad Sahib which he delivered in Lahore. In this address he has urged the Muslims to unite and has drawn attention to the need of solid and effective efforts towards rescuing Palestine from the grip of Zionist criminals and has asked the people of Pakistan to render immediate help to the Palestine Arabs. Reminding the Muslims of their common allegiance to the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and arguing from verses of the Holy Quran the speaker has urged them to organize themselves to with-stand the onsets of the Zionist criminals who are being supported by the United States and Communist Russia in pursuance of their interests and special purposes. He has asked the Muslims not to display weakness or distress, but to keep in mind their obligations of Jihad for the upholding of Islam and Muslims.

“I had thought it was the case the the Ahmadi eschewed violent Jihad”

Offensive to spread the faith? That’s what they claim. “Defensive” violent jihad to combat “oppression” and “persecution” (terms that can be interpreted to mean pretty much anything, just ask any teenager)? It’s perfectly halal.

          For the sake of completeness:

          https://www.alislam.org/book/truth-about-ahmadiyyat/suspension-of-jihad/

They clearly indicate that he did not reject the concept of Jihad by the sword but believed that the obligation of such Jihad had been postponed in this age on account of the absence of the conditions that call for it. He did not abrogate Jihad by the sword, nor could he do so as he was bound by the Holy Quran. He merely declared its postponement. He cited the hadees that the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had prophesied that the Promised Messiah would not fight with the sword as his age would be a time of religious freedom.

Finally, we would draw attention to a statement of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II which explains the attitude of the Ahmadiyya Community towards Jihad. He states:

As the salat is obligatory so, when the need arises, is fighting for the faith obligatory… It should be remembered that of the matters which have prescribed as the principal constituents of faith, one is Jihad… He who turns away from Jihad when it becomes obligatory is condemned to hell. (Report of the Majlis Mushawarat, 1950)

At a time when the conditions for Jihad by the sword did not exist the Ahmadiyya Community eagerly carried out Jihad with the Holy Quran, which has been called the Great Jihad, and Jihad against their own selves, which has been called the Greatest Jihad. They continue to refute the Christian and Arya Samajist opponents of Islam. After the establishment of Pakistan, when the Dogra forces and the Indian army were suppressing the Muslims of Kashmir, the Ahmadiyya Community of Pakistan was the only one that raised a volunteer corps called the Furqan Force to fight in Kashmir along with the army of Pakistan and thus carried out Jihad by sword in practice. Several young men of the Furqan Force became martyrs in this fighting. Thus, when the time came for Jihad by the sword the Ahmadiyya Community participated in it at once and should the conditions of Jihad by the sword arise again, the Ahmadiyya Community will, God willing, not hesitate to discharge the obligation of Jihad by the sword.

          For Angemon:

The Ahmadis apparently, from your clip, are willing to fight if they see Islam on the defensive. The key term is “if they see”.

My question is, should there be a battle in Europe between the Muslim immigrants and Europeans, would the Ahmadis constitute a fifth column force striking at the heart of the Europeans? I guess it would all turn on whether they see the war as defensive.

For example, the war in Serbia over Kosovo and the Muslims can be described as an invasion by Serbians. Or perhaps, it is Serbians responding to Muslim provocations on Serbs and wanting to consolidate Serbians into one country. Do we want to roll the dice on how Ahmadis happen to see a particular fight?

And thanks for the link to the archived reference.

For the record, I share the doubts of those with the gravest misgivings on the Ahmadiys. As Muslims, their philosophy is not live-and-let-live, but that any way of non-violently spreading Islam is mandatory. Hello, identity politics; hello infiltration of community organizations, school boards, and government bureaucracies; hello support of blasphemy laws and hate crime oppression.

I believe the Ahmaddi sect performs what Ed Dutton and Michael Woodley of Menie in At Our Wits’ End: Why We’re Becoming Less Intelligent and What it Means for the Future call a group selection function.

The definition of the group selection function is that a coherent group might find it beneficial to support the presence of individuals who as individuals are unpleasant to be around and who may be erratic as individuals and unable to support themselves. However, they have a specialized trait that is beneficial to the group as a whole. An example is Isaac Newton, a super-genius who was unpleasant to all the people around him. Albert Einstein had to ask for help in finding his way home. But, these super-geniuses make a contribution to society far more beneficial than the trouble and effort necessary to sustain them as individuals.
    https://www.toptenz.net/top-10-geniuses-shockingly-horrible-people.php

My contention is that Ahmadiyya Islam serves group selection as the fall-back position for Islam if external pressures on Islam become so great that Islamic expansion actually feels threatened. The Ahmaddiyas were closer to the mainstream Islamic community in the 1940’s and 50’s, when Abdus Salaam, an Ahmaddi nuclear scientist, helped develop the Pakistani nuclear bomb when it appeared India was winning wars with Pakistan on a regular basis.

Of course, at the present time, Islamic expansion is going full-guns ahead with the active complicity of Western leaders, so mainstream Islam is confident enough of itself to dump on the Ahmaddiyas on general principle. The Ahmaddis, as loyal Muslims, are not about to criticize mainstream Islam. They are providing an alternative path, seemingly not needed now, for Islam to inject itself into non-Islamic societies.

  7. Flavius Claudius Iulianus says

Hugh Fitzgerald is wasting his breath on the Ahmadis. The Ahmadis are like a lead coin that has been spray painted with a shiny gold lacquer. Painting a lead coin does not make it gold. The fact that they are pacifists is irrelevant. The vast majority of Muslims never act in violence. But they DO transmit (from generation to generation) and promote a faith that, at its core, celebrates violence and oppression. (And so when a Muslim becomes “more religious” then they revert to the more virulent core form of the faith.)

And the fact that they are victims of other Muslims is irrelevant. This is just the reality of being a Muslim. Islam is internecine by nature.

And the Ahmadis, like all Muslims, celebrate Mohammad and present him as the ultimate example to emulate. (As we all know, Mohammad is at the center of Islam; there is no Islam without him.) They whitewash a man, who was first and foremost a terrorist (Sahih al-Bukhari 4:52:220: “I have been made victorious with terror..”) and a war criminal (examples abound).

In fact, I would say that they are hugely detrimental to our fight against Islam since their dissimulations allow greater penetration of Islam and Shariah into the West. An example: this word game around “jihad” that they are reputed to have created. It is a useful tool of deception for all Muslims worldwide. With it they can hide the true meaning of jihad (see chapter 8, “The Spoils of War,” of the Koran) under some noble sounding, inauthentic poppycock of “the Greater Jihad” and “the Great Jihad.”

And what if Ahmadis were to break from the Uhmah (which they cannot)? What then? Well we already have such a group: the Bahá’í. But the Bahá’í still make apologies for and legitimize Mohammad, and they are still globalists calling for a worldwide theocratic government.

Our hope for Islam to reform is in vain. Islam CANNOT be reformed. And if the Ahmadis were really pacifists and truly honest (truthful) then they would convert to something like, say Christianity.

I have nothing but the highest regard for Hugh Fitzgerald. I know my opening sentence was a touch harsh. I think I intended it more as an rhetorical opening. It’s just … there was a hint of what one sees so frequently among those who wish to see a reform of Islam: the statement that hopefully the Ahmadis and their ilk will “convert” the rest of the Islamic world. Perhaps he was just being ironic or sarcastic. I don’t know.

For me, the most important point to understand about these apologist fringe Muslim sects is that, by and large,
“… they are hugely detrimental to our fight against Islam since their dissimulations allow greater penetration of Islam and Shariah into the West.”

    Key points:-
The slide appeared to cite controversial American anti-Islam campaigner Brigitte Gabriel as a factual source.

Holmesglen Institute removed the “inappropriate” material and apologised to Ms Quddus for its inclusion.

Islamic politics expert Greg Barton said the inclusion of content from Ms Gabriel was, at best, “very naive”.

The quote — sourced from a prominent anti-Muslim activist and presented without qualification in online lecture material — left Ms Quddus feeling “disempowered” and bewildered that a claim she described as “sickening in its bigotry” would be part of her tertiary studies.

That way the doctrines of islam are to be seen as benign.
A very Ahmadic way of jihad; using the “pen as the sword”

Pakistani physicist Nobel laureate Dr. Abdus Salaam was a Ahmadi Muslim.
In 1974 Pakistan, by way of a constitutional amendment, declared Ahmadiyas as non-Muslims. In protest Dr. Salaam left Pakistan and settled down in UK. When he died in 1996, he was buried in his native place in Pakistan. Pakistan govt. removed the word ‘Muslim’ from his epitaph (which read “First Muslim Nobel laureate of Pakistan”).

For sure, Salaam was treated poorly by the Pakistani government. But, what did they care? The really important event for them was, due largely to Dr. Salaam’s efforts, they had the bomb. Now, they could sponsor terror and murder in India and Kashmir without having to worry about Indian invasion.

The Ahmadi Salaam left in a huff at having his Muslim credentials questioned, but enabled murder and terror.

I had a friend who was an Ahmadi in UK who was an Indian and would make friends with Hindus than Pakistani muslims but away from muslims will criticize HIndus for caste ism and such and Eulogize Islam as religion of universal brotherhood and and how he could stand shoulder to shoulder with a pakistani muslim physicist in his mosque who had won nobel prize in physics(who happened to be a Ahmadi) .He thought that I was not probably aware that how Ahmadias are not even considered as muslims in many muslim countries .Lot of them have a deep inferiority complex as most of them in India were converts from low social class Hindus and thought joining islam was a way to attain social equality but was just a dream that got shattered. They should realize as a sect they are accepted better by christians and Hindus than muslims and but any any potential converts among Hindus and Christians should be aware of the pitfalls about joining a religion which claims universal brotherhood .

The different sects of “Islam” will always be in perpetual warfare with each other. Let them do that “over there” with no involvement by America…don’t want ANY Muslim of whatever variation, sect or reformist movement over “HERE.” Nothing good ever comes from anything Islamic. Reformist “kinder and gentler” Muslims will always be overpowered by the TRUE Muslim followers of the warmonger Muhammad. “Kinder and gentler” Muslims only help pave the way into the West for the hard-core Muslims who kill infidels, heretics and apostates. Islam by any other name still stinks.

If ‘regular’ Muslims aren’t bombing Ahmadi mosques like they are those of ‘regular’ sect mosques then it must be because the ‘regulars’ find them useful idiots, like a child knocking at the door followed by a vacuum salesman lurking in the bushes. We should not find Ahmadis cute and fuzzy.

Lets not put any Muslim in office, they are not representing anyone but their ideology.

Can someone please bring order to the nomenclature here? When do you use Ahmadi(s), and when Ahmadiyya? Also, I see both Sunni, Shia and Sunnite, Shi’ite (Mortimer uses the latter terms).

I don’t think there is any real standardization, Mark.

“Moderate” sects of Islam such as Ahmadi will help bring Islam into the coming one worl religion fold which is essentially a new age spiritualist movement.

And also when you understand new age spirituality, you will understand why the elite billiionaire class supported Hillary over Trump. It’s the only explanation.
