Turkey has occupied northern Cyprus since 1974, ostensibly to protect the Turkish Muslims there from attacks from the Greek Orthodox Christians. Those attacks were not, of course, really happening. And now Turkey’s Defense Minister, Hulusi Akar, has threatened that Turkey may renew its jihad in Cyprus: “We are at the same point in Cyprus that we were in 1974. No one should doubt that we will do what we did then if we have a similar situation today.”
Sure. Because it is part of the Turkey’s new jihadist expansionism. Cyprus was a goal of the warriors of jihad from the very beginning. As The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS shows, jihadis first conquered Cyprus in 649, and the island was thereafter a point of contention between the forces of Islam and those of Christian Europe for centuries. In 1571, the Ottoman Sultan Selim the Sot ordered a new jihad conquest of Cyprus because his favorite wine was made there, and he had drunk through all his stores of it. This course of action didn’t work out so well for Selim. Find out why in The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS.
“Akar renews Cyprus invasion threat,” Ekathimerini, August 30, 2019:
Reiterating remarks he made earlier in the month, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar suggested Friday that Turkey will not hesitate to invade Cyprus again.
“We are at the same point in Cyprus that we were in 1974. No one should doubt that we will do what we did then if we have a similar situation today,” he reportedly said during an event marking the 97th anniversary of the end of the 1922 Greek-Turkish war, which is celebrated in Turkey as Victory Day.
He also expressed Turkey’s determination to continue activities in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean.
“We will never back down from our rights and interests,” Akar said, warning that no one should test Turkey’s power and resolve, before seeking to clarify that this should not be viewed as a threat.
At the same time, Turkey issued another navigational telex (Navtex) yesterday reserving areas from September 4 to November 1 within Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) for gas exploration by the Fatih drillship.
Meanwhile, Cyprus said yesterday that it will resort to the European Council to preempt plans by Turkish Cypriots in the occupied north of the island to develop the fenced-off town of Varosha.
On Thursday, the so-called foreign minister of the self-declared entity in the north, which is only recognized by Turkey, opened up the Greek Cypriot town to some 40 Turkish and Turkish Cypriot journalists, telling them he wants to “turn it into Las Vegas.”
Cyprus Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides denounced the move yesterday, saying it was an affront to residents who were forced to flee in the 1974 Turkish invasion.
terry sullivan says
turkey should be expelled from nato and expelled, by force if necessary, from cyprus
mortimer says
Terry, you know that won’t happen. The world can’t start a big war over an island. A war among NATO countries is a non-starter. All foreign policy in Turkey comes from the dictator. This is going to depend on when Erdogan leaves the political arena. I predict that will happen sometime after his 70th birthday, when younger men decide this whimsical fool has damaged Turkey enough. This general might even be one of the group that eventually unseats Erdogan in future. Turkey has a geographic importance for NATO and two military bases with American and British troops there. You should blame France and Germany for this situation, since they are not tough on Turkey. Foreign policy should not be based on one cause.
SAFI says
“You should blame France and Germany” Really? Why? France is by far the least culpable country on this issue. Why not blame Britain? It’s the Brits who have for decades been promoting Turkey’s agenda in Europe. (Not to mention it’s Brits who’ve been the main buyers of stolen Greek properties in N. Cyprus, thus Brits have a direct economic interest for Cyprus to remain occupied, lest they be asked to return the properties they’ve bought illegally)
Not France. Without the brave French opposition to the British machinations the Turks would have gotten everything they wanted and would have already been enjoying full EU membership while remaining a dictatorial islamic rogue state. France has consistently been furstrating Turkey’s plans. It even officially recognized the Armenian Genocide in recent years, something which Britain would never dream of doing for fear of upsetting its Special Relationship with the Turks.

Europeans should be thankful for Brexit. With Perfidious Albion on it’s way out the islamic influence in Brussels will be significantly weakened. Too bad the “humanitarian superpower” (Sweden) is still allowed to wreak havoc. Lets hope that Swexit is not very far.
Also turkish foreign policy is not the brainchild of Erdogan. You’re very wrong about that. Turkey has an expansionist agenda against its neighbors that is endorsed by all turkish governments and has been there at least since the last Ottoman Parliament’s 1920 “Misak-i Milli” proclamation which was then adopted by Ataturk and all his successors. (I’ve posted about it before and how it relates to turkish actions in Syria and Iraq (and Cyprus also) https://www.jihadwatch.org/2019/08/iraq-christians-evacuating-their-villages-due-to-turkish-bombardments#comment-2131551
But I agree on one thing, there’s no way NATO would decide to expel Turkey, at least for now. Both due to its geographic/geostrategic importance and because of its status as a major customer of US-made Arms and technology. Altough with Turkey already moving to create it’s own export-oriented Arms Industry it may soon start being seen by the US less as a customer and more as a competitor.
The unexpected voice says
It need to be done. Turkey doesn’t deserve a plce in NATO in the first place and their illegal occapation in Northern Cyprus and Balkan strait must be cede to the rightful owners. Also, no one should sell weapon to Turkey anymore, as I think they’re even worse than Iran because even Iran didn’t invade it’s neighbour and shamelessly denying its own crime like Turkey did.
gravenimage says
Mortimer, you saying that we have to roll over for Muslim aggression here and hope that whoever takes over from Erdogan in the future is somehow more reasonable is pretty disturbing. And protecting Cyprus would not be starting a war–invading Cyprus would be.
And Turkey *should* have been kicked out of NATO long since. Why should we have to go on pretending that Turkey is an ally?
Avenger says
If a “red line” should ever be drawn by the USA or EU it should be now in Cyprus.
The invasion of a sovereign nation is nothing to take lightly, if it’s allowed in Cyprus, for a second time then it won’t be long before Greece, Armenia, Bulgaria, Lebanon and others are in Erdogan’s Caliphate dreams.
If this Turkish invasion occurs then war must be declared on Turkey by NATO and the US.
Remember NATO and USA bombed Christian Serbia into submission just for defending the Serbian State of Kosovo from Albanian muslim terrorists.

Avenger is right in this case re Cyprus.
GreekEmpress says
I have to agree. I have a cousin on Cyprus, so this is personal for my
family. There will always be enmity between the Greeks and the Turks,
and Erdogan is a very dangerous man.

Scary, GreekEmpress. I hope there is pushback from the West, and that the Turks reconsider their ugly saber rattling.

Indeed – shame on the world for throwing Ukraine to the mongrels.

There is a teaching in Islam called ‘maslaha’. Look it up. And you thunk that Islam can’t justify juss bout anythin’ … what it can. A hadith tells us Mohammed drank wine. So who are you going to imitate?
SAFI says
A Muslim’s piety is best measured through their adherence to Jihad. Waging Jihad against the kuffar can absolve of convince Allah to overlook any other sin you may have committed. It’s Islam’s ultimate get-out-of-hellfire-free-card. And in that sense we can say that Sultan Selim was a very pious Muslim despite being a boozer.
No Muzzies Here says
Turkey plays a game with us. It pretends to straddle East and West, and to be friendly to both. In reality, Turkey is oriented toward Islam and benefits royally from the undeserved trust the West places in Turkey.
Turkey should not be trusted. It has regressed and is now a promoter of the expansion of Islam.
black adder says
Kemalists in Turkey are desperate. Islam is back for good and they will all dance to its tune, whether they like it or not.

Sickening. There are no attacks on Muslims in Cyprus.
The West should act to protect Cyprus now, unlike in 1974 when we just rolled over for this Muslim aggression.

The UK and the US would never let Cyprus full.itb would be war and we know who would win and just maybe the hole island would become one again.

Shame that Cyprus allies will let them fall again. Turkey has the full support of russia so they feel they can do anything they please. Turkey will eventually take over cyprus fully, the cypriot government is willing to sell out their own people for profit.
NECTARIOS Photiou says
What I don’t understand is what do the Turkish-Cypriots say about this? Surely they can also have a saying in this. America, Britain and the rest, if its not bennefitting for them, they will do nothing for Cyprus. Whats also funny is Turkey such a big country, yet want more.
gravenimage says
Islam *always* wants more.

What do you expect from Mulla land ,All they want to do is occupy Cyprus then Europe which is already ripe for take over next few years .Turkey is only singing since Germany help them in industry etc and they sold items to Europe at low cost and help Turkeys economy over time intention was as per Islam doctrine , Now they will back stab Europe , did Europe expect anything better from Islamic state. All ready Europe is eating Halal and contributing build Mosque and promoting Islam. Note even though less then 90% are non Islamic yet they have to eat Halal??
