DESTRUCTION OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN SHARIA LAW MANUAL (Reliance of the Traveller):
Q5.6: Fighting the Wrong By Hand
-2- and to break the instruments, for example, just enough to obviate their being used for disobedience and no more, or to be careful not to break the bottles when pouring out wine. If one cannot manage except by throwing rocks at the bottles or the like, then one may do so and is not obliged to cover the damages.
Chapter R40.0: MUSIC, SONG, AND DANCE
@R40.1: Musical-2- “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress.”
-3- “Song makes hypocrisy grow in the heart as water does herbage
-4- “This Community will experience the swallowing up of some people by the earth, metamorphosis of some into animals, and being rained upon with stones.” Someone asked, “When will this be, O messenger of Allah?” and he said, “When songstresses and musical instruments appear and wine is held to be lawful.”
-5- “There will be peoples of my Community who will hold fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments to be lawful….”
All of this is explicit and compelling textual evidence that musical instruments of all types are unlawful (Kaff al-ra`a’ `an muharramat al-lahw wa al-sama` (y49), 2.269-70).
Instruments
(Ibn Hajar Haytami:) As for the condemnation of musical instruments, flutes, strings, and the like by the Truthful and Trustworthy (Allah bless him and give him peace), who
“does not speak from personal caprice: it is nothing besides a revelation inspired” (Koran 53:3-4),
R40.2
(Nawawi:) It is unlawful to use musical instruments-such as those which drinkers are known for, like the mandolin, lute, cymbals and flute-or to listen to them. It is permissible to play the tambourine at weddings, circumcisions, and other times, even if it has bells on its sides. Beating the kuba, a long drum with a narrow middle, is unlawful (Mughni al-muhtaj ila ma`rifa ma`ani alfaz al-Minhaj (y73) m, 4.429-30).
Westman says
Muhammad’s reasoning was simple: Destroy delicate and deep relationships between men and women to one based sex; replacing them with booty women and a lusty paradise(jannah) to incentivize men to die in his armies.
Eliminating music replaced romance with war and made it easier to keep Muslim women in an inferior status.

I, for one, don’t care what moslims like or don’t like or find unacceptable. They don’t like anything worthwhile, and hate all that is good, clean, virtuous, wholesome, and pleasant.
Beautiful music is a gift from the True God for the enjoyment of His children. Those who are blessed to compose and write, play and sing beautiful songs, have a special gift from our Creator.

Well you know, once they got things under control they would probably become more liberal, just like China and the Soviet Union. But of course how long would it take to get things under control. They were in Spain and India for centuries until they were driven out. Now they claim these countries till belong to them, they just have to take them back. Probably it will take a lot of bloodshed before it all settles down.

Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia are under Muslim control–and none of them are liberal.
James says
One thing though, there is music we associate with Islamic countries. Loreena McKennit uses these sorts of music in her performances, combined with new age and Celtic. How can that be? Is this music of the cultures the Muslims conquered and Islamized? Or do they allow a little music, like some of the Christian sects that do not approve of dancing, singing, having fun, drinking alcohol and enjoying life? Or is it something that goes on in spite of it? I think they have bands in the Near East and even play bagpipes. That is probably where the bagpipe came from, I guess. Portable so nomads can carry them along on the camel or llama or horseback? And one does see music. I was once in Afghanistan, and I remember seeing musical performers in a cafe. So I guess they must allow some music at least under Islam. It is sort of ironic that there have been musicals with Muslim themes. Alladin and also in the 50s Kismet, which had music from Borodin as the source of the music. Of course his inspiration may have been music in Central Asia, where the Muslim influence must have met and merged with native cultures. One of his pieces is called “In the steppes of Central Asia”.
gravenimage says
Music in Muslim countries is in spite of Islam–and there is always fear of an Islamic crackdown, as indeed often occurs.
St. Croix says
James, before Islam, the “Islamic” nations existed as cultures of their own, of course, with music and all the rest! Mohammed had to knock it out of them, like the love of alcohol, for example, that was a toughie to get them to accept. And music, that’s another that goes with Islam, but must surely go against the grain of ordinary people in those cultures, as it’s a natural expression of the human spirit. I believe Islam tries to crush anything which might make us more humane and might light the fires of truth within the human heart. Music moves people, and also counters the stern and angry disposition that is essential to carrying out the Islamic agenda. One ex-Muslim I heard speak was a founder of Hezbollah, and he was Iranian actually. He is now a Christian and has an amazing story of how he survived and his life changed. Now he educates people about the truth of Islam.
He said he was in charge of teaching a few subjects within the group when they were training to be terrorists etc at the start of Hezbollah…and he taught the class on “anger” and “how to be angry” was a big part of it. As he said it takes a lot for a person to cut someone’s head off, you can’t do that normally, you have to work at developing the anger and mindset that will eventually make you capable of doing that kind of thing.

Islam would condemn all the great beautiful Christian classics by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven – and many others – earlier sublime liturgical music by Palestrina, John Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, Giovanni Gabrieli (and a hundred others of the Renaissance period) then later composers of religious works: Bruckner, Verdi, Dvorak, Elgar, Faure – and on into the 20th C: Olivier Messiaen, Gyorgy Ligeti, Arvo Part, James MacMillan.

I do not understand the lyrics of “The Wine of love” but I can comment on the title. One must be careful when generalizing about Muslims. It is the worst in any group that makes news. In the case of Muslims, this is the Salafists. But there are also the Sufis, persecuted though they are. They would have no problem with the idea of the wine of Love. E.g.,
Through Love all that is bitter will be sweet,
Through Love all that is copper will be gold.
Through Love all dregs will turn to purest wine
—Jalaluddin Rumi, translated by Annemarie Schimmel
(Avoid Coleman Barks’ “translations” of Rumi; Barks is a fraud.)

Jedothek, it is not just Salafists–it is any pious Muslims. As for Sufis, they still embrace Jihad terror. They are not benign as too many seem to think.
And most Muslims reject Rumi–he is more popular in the West than in any part of Dar-al-Islam.
