These were members of the Afghan judiciary, which the Taliban consider illegitimate and not fully Sharia-adherent. This happened, moreover, while American troops are there. It will keep on happening after American troops are gone. Our expenditure of blood and treasure in Afghanistan is useless, and should have ended a very long time ago.
“Judges killed in attack in Afghanistan,” Reuters, November 8, 2019 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):
Three judges and a court staffer have been killed in Afghanistan after Taliban militants stopped their car in the latest attack on the judiciary.
A spokesman for the governor in eastern Paktia province says the incident took place in the Mohammad Agha district of neighbouring Logar province.
“They were travelling in a car but were stopped by the Taliban checkpoint on the road,” Abdullah Hasrat said on Thursday.
No group has claimed responsibility for attack, which came as the victims were driving to the capital, Kabul.
Taliban insurgents fighting to overthrow the foreign-backed Afghan government have long targeted the judiciary in retaliation for harsh sentences given to their fighters….
The Taliban now controls more territory than at any point since the US invasion of the country in 2001….
As Afghan police casualties mounted, the Afghan government this year pulled back from hundreds of checkpoints in isolated areas that acted as a magnet for Taliban attacks.
However, many Afghans complain that the Taliban and other militant groups have now set up checkpoints along the main highways, searching cars and looking for government employees.

We are practically back at the status quo ante. So the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and the subsequent years of conflict accomplished what exactly? Nothing much, apart from many casualties and running through billions of dollars, of course.
The US made the same mistake as the Soviet Union did years before. This debacle shows the limits of superpower reach.
Infidel says
The US won that war in 2001 itself, and should have withdrawn in 2002. It could have let the Taliban now fight an uphill battle against every other militia – Tajik, Hazara, Pashtun and Turkoman. That way, the Taliban would have had to struggle every step of the way, while Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and anyone else interested could have backed their own favorite militia.
That would have been a lot less expensive than the Bush/Sharansky experiment

Grimly true, Lotus. You can’t civilize a place like Afghanistan, which is almost 100% Muslim.

These judges and the court officer are martyrs of the rule of law and should be honored. The Afghan people have a choice between the RULE OF LAW (which obtains in civilized countries) and the VIGILANTISM of normative Islam.
99% of Afghans want discriminatory, duplicitous (and somewhat whimsical) Sharia law, rather than modern law based on reason, equality and solid precedent and human experience.
We have a big job to convince Afghans that SHARIA law itself is ENTIRELY man-made, rather than a divine miracle. Once Muslims see that Islam is a hoax, they leave it immediately … at least inwardly.

It took two nuclear bombs to destroy the Japanese conviction in their faith in Shintoism and their rabid conviction that they were destined to rule the world. It took the complete destruction of Germany to destroy the same conviction in the German Nazis.
In my opinion it will take nothing less than the complete destruction of Mecca and Medina to destroy the Muslim conviction in the existence of or at least superiority of their Allah. Once Mecca and Medina are reduced to rubble the majority of Muslims will lose the conviction that Allah is greater and that he will protect them. A more peaceful solution would be to invade Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Iran, etc., and take over their oil fields, destroying their access to the petro-dollars that fund their Islamic Jihad. The West handed the Muslim savages those oil-fields and oil technology that the West invented back in the 1950s, why did the West do that? Because by the 1950s the West was already collapsing, it’s confidence in it’s values already eroding.
How likely are those solutions to happen? Highly unlikely right now, we live in a different America and a different Europe today. The confidence and conviction that our Western values are worth defending at all costs has substantially eroded, we live in an age of growing Moral Relativism, Multiculturalism, Skepticism, Collectivism, Tribalism, Irrationalism, and Subjectivism. It is not that Islam is winning, it is that Western Civilization is in a state of collapse. This is no longer John Wayne’s West, this is more and more Caitlyn Jenner’s West.
The primitive, pathetic, supremely irrational, cancer of Islam did not and could not invade and grow in the West in the more rational age of Teddy Roosevelt or Winston Churchill, but in the age of Obama, Merkel, Hillary, McCain, Bush, and Caitlyn Jenner, it can and it is. Caitlyn Jenner is the perfect example and symbol of the transformation and collapse of the West, from Olympic hero to whatever Caitlyn Jenner is. I’ve seen the enemy, and the enemy is us.

Great post ! Great analogy of the current insane society the leftist liberals have created!
The enemy is us! We must stop the madness before it’s too late!
God save America!
Hello Hello says
The analogy is quite accurate except it expresses only the results as to what is happening in the Western countries; particularly America, without looking at the cause of America’s decline. Caitllyn is the result of a root cause. It is a singular cause. America has turned away from its Founding and is seeking to establish a new Christianity/Religion and we are failing, which is so obvious by the decline of family, churches and academia, and they have been replaced by an entertainment and self centered mentality-resulting in a total social and moral breakdown. .
America has become foolish in that it thinks it can neglect so great the Sovereign God and the Bible, and remain powerful. God is being replaced, and as a result, there is a void in the hearts and minds of people, and therefore, that void is being replaced by Islam and Humanism, resulting in many moral issues.
America is like a tree in the summer. The tree is filled with many leaves of moral issues and we try to pluck them or restore them, As we deal with all these moral issues, the root continues to feed the tree bad nutrients. Deal with the root and that tree will again produce its original structure and purpose.
I do not believe God is able to overcome the TV entertainment mentality in our homes, and thus, the family declines and as the family goes so goes America.

Wow – succinctly stated. It is very sad that most of the deluded West cannot see this plain logic.

Mortimer, these judges probably are not what we would consider secular–but they still weren’t Islamic enough for the Taliban.

Mortimer, you have never said why pious Muslims will listen to the ‘filthy Infidels’, whom they hate and despise.

Applause for mortimers post above. Does this occurrence surprise anyone? How long will it be till British or American Muslims emulate their brothers? Some have tried already.
