“Pope Francis trotted out a scene from the 11th-century French epic poem La Chanson de Roland this week to prove Christians have tried to convert Muslims by the sword, just as Muslims have done to Christians.”
The Pope’s moral equivalence is obscene at best. He also stated: “Beware of the fundamentalist groups: everyone has his own.”
True, but no religion but Islam has a history of aggression and an imperative — supported by religious texts — to conquer the world and subjugate unbelievers as inferiors, while murdering those who leave the faith.
Nowhere in Christian tenets is there a command to conquer by the sword; however, this is prescribed in Islamic texts and law, and has been steadily followed in varying degrees for 1,400 years.
Christians also defended themselves against expansionary Islamic marauders from the 7th century onward, as the latter rampaged through the Middle East and Africa, murdering far more Christians than Christians killed Muslims in all the Crusades combined.
And they’re still doing it. Christians are facing genocide at the hands of Muslims in the Middle East and Africa; most of the world ignores this, including the Pope, who instead insists that “it’s not fair to identify Islam with violence.”
The Pope has been a powerful promoter of Islam, going so far as advance theological reforms in Catholic schools to promote a “common mission of peace” with Islam. He largely ignores the gross human rights violations against Christians, women, minorities and apostates that are justified by normative Islam. He has not called on the leaders of Islamic states and mainstream Islamic leaders to condemn the Islamic texts that sanction such abuses. Instead, he has stated that “Christianity and Islam have more in common than people think…and the two religions defend common values that are necessary for the future of civilization.”
“Hours before Pope Francis called for the abolition of capital punishment” last Friday, he warmly embraced the Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayeb — the revered Islamic scholar and cleric who has endorsed jihad suicide attacks against Jews and wants converts to Christianity to be killed. Pope Francis and el-Tayeb early this year published “A Document On Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together.”
Then last month, Pope Francis installed new cardinals who “share his vision for social justice, rights of immigrants and dialogue with Islam.”
Regarding La Chanson de Roland, “the French themselves to cry foul, reproaching the pontiff both for besmirching one of their most beloved pieces of epic literature and for using a fictional narrative to illustrate a point about how Christians supposedly behave.”
“Pope Cites Fictional French Epic to Prove Christians Are Violent,” by Thomas D. Williams, Breitbart, November 21, 2019:
ROME — Pope Francis trotted out a scene from the 11th-century French epic poem La Chanson de Roland this week to prove Christians have tried to convert Muslims by the sword, just as Muslims have done to Christians.
“A scene from The Song of Roland comes to me as a symbol, when the Christians defeat the Muslims and line them up in front of the baptismal font, with one holding a sword,” the pope told an Argentinian interreligious dialogue group Monday.
“And the Muslims had to choose between baptism or the sword. That is what we Christians did,” he declared.
It did not take long for the French themselves to cry foul, reproaching the pontiff both for besmirching one of their most beloved pieces of epic literature and for using a fictional narrative to illustrate a point about how Christians supposedly behave.
“La Chanson de Roland is obviously not a historical chronicle of events, but an epic poem, a chanson de geste, the oldest and most complete manuscript, written in Anglo-Norman, and dates back to the early twelfth century, four centuries after the facts it is supposed to recount,” wrote Vini Ganimara Thursday for the French Catholic news site Riposte Catholique.
The Song of Roland was indeed inspired in part by a historical event, namely Charlemagne’s expedition to Spain in 778, Ganimara observes, but this expedition to Spain was actually undertaken at the request of several Muslim governors of Spain, in rebellion against the Emir of Cordova.
Moreover, the invasion was unsuccessful, and is recounted as such in the poem.
“The memory of Pope Francis evoking the victory of the Franks over Muslims is therefore confused, because the expedition was not a victory,” Ganimara observes.
“The fictitious case of the forced baptism of Muslims supposedly defeated after the capture of Zaragoza — which did not take place — is not historical, but is a pure imagination of the poet,” he adds, noting that contrary to the pope’s account, there is not even a Christian holding a sword in the original work.
“How then can he affirm that ‘this is what we Christians did’?” he concludes.
In his address, Pope Francis was attempting to show that it is not just Islamic extremists who practice violent fanaticism, but that Christians are equally guilty of religiously motivated violence….

Exactly what crossed my mind as I read the first paragraph – the Pope using a work of fiction to “document” how Christians acted. I could point out other counter arguments – like, for example, that being common practice at the time, or how that happened nearly one thousand years ago – but he’s using a work of fiction to prove make a case. Idiotic buffoon.

Rufolino says

RegT says
This one is indeed a “fiction”, in the sense that he pretends to be something that he is not. He holds no love for Christians nor Christianity. As already written, he is a globalist, and a supporter of the globalists, and is using his position and the Church to assist the globalists in conquering not only Europe, but also America, Australia, and wherever Christians live.
He does come off as a buffoon when he makes pronouncements such as this, but he is not a total fool. He knows full well what he is doing. I’m sure he is coached by those more intelligent than him, but he _does_ do the work of the Father of Lies, whether he believes in him or not.
I am not religious, but I do believe in evil, and it is more rampant today than at any other time in my seven decades of life. Evil does not exist in a vacuum, but it is there to destroy the moral values we all know are worthy of being followed and promoted.
James C. says
He would have been on stronger ground if he had mentioned that Charlemagne offered the Frisians a choice of baptism or death. But that did not involve the Muslims, so it would not have made his point. Nor were there Muslims in Scandinavia, or in Lithuania. And Charlemagne’s choice has no basis in the source texts of Christianity – but the Koran does very definitely encourage – or rather, command – the use of violence to spread Mahometanism.
He is comparing two unlike things.

It would seem that the best thing here is to give Francis the benefit of the doubt and have him involuntarily committed to a hospital for the mentally infirm. We have to assume that he is either pure evil and is frantically doing all he can to destroy the Church (which is what I believe) or take the more benign approach – that he is certifiably insane. It could be both. But he needs to be taken away and put in a straight jacket and replaced. Perhaps Benedict could come back? Or maybe it is time for a black Pope – Cardinal Sarah? Or time for an American Pope? Cardinal Burke? We’ve had our token South American now. Let’s call it done.

Terry Gain says
This Pope is not just an idiot and a fool, he is an enemy of Catholicism. He has disgraced Catholicism by equating it to the the most evil ideology ever invented. The fact that he uses a fictional account of Catholic violence from 9 centuries ago to downgrade Catholicism to the level of an ideology that mandates killing and conquest and rape and terrorism is strong evidence that he has lost his mind. One does not need to go back centuries to see evidence of Koran inspired atrocities. One needs to go back no more than a day, or perhaps an hour. Or a minute.
I anticipate that before he dies this traitor will remind us that Christ will come again to break the crosses.
RegT says
Terry he has not actually lost his mind – only his soul. He panders to those who would destroy Christianity and the Judeo-Christian moral code. The Left has been working for hundreds of years to infiltrate and take over key political and religious positions. They almost got a female “anti-Christ” elected in the U.S., and they are hard at work continuing the harm they have done to Western civilization. Europe is almost gone, including England, even if it does finally leave the EU. They have far too many muslims in their country to recover from, at this point. Hopefully we will not follow in their footsteps.
Winston Churchill wrote of the place we now find ourselves:
“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.”
“There may be even a worse fate. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves.”

JOHN says
Catholic’s and Christians resorted to violence only when threatened and attacked for self defense only, and never in brutal, naked aggression, as is the case with Islam. In the case of the Crusades, Christians did not take up arms until caravans of Christians, seeking the Holy Land, were massacred, tortured and enslaved by Moslem hordes for close to 500 years, and even then, The Pope did not call for an armed response until Moslem’s forces encircled the city wall of Constantinople and the city’s fall was imminent. The Holy Land will always belong to Christians and Jews, the Moslem’s were merciless invaders who pillaged, murdered, raped, tortured and enslaved their victims. There is no moral equivocation or comparison, period.
Ray Jarman says
John,
I am glad someone has echoed my views here and elsewhere about the Crusades. You are correct in that the only request made by Christians originally was safe passage to the Holy Lands for religious purposes and only fought back when attacked in 1095 and Godfrey would reconquer Aleppo and Antioch.
My wife, who is Peruvian, keeps reminding me of the forced conversions of Catholicism and I remind her that it is true than many horrific crimes have been committed in the name of Christ but that Jesus Christ never once advocated forced conversion. He and his original disciples preached love and forgiveness not retribution, much less conversion by the sword.
SKA says
Spaniards in the New World were aping what the Muslims had done to them for seven centuries. Their behavior after 1492 in some ways became a mirror image of Islamic behavior e.g. for viable conversions and the excesses of their Inquisition. Jacques Ellul also held this view.
Westman says
Why would the leader of a major religion attempt to convert the religion into a vassal of one-world government? It seems as if a Marxist has taken the reins with a false belief that human competition can be soft-hammered into pacifism. His kiss-up with Islam leaders reminds one of Neville Chamberlain. The Catholic Church will never recover its respect in France and Germany when the results of Islamism are realized by the citizens.
His ignorance of Islam is astounding, making statements like, “..its not fair to identify Islam with violence..”
Anyone reading the texts of Islam would conclude that it is not fair to identify all MUSLIMS with violence and it is completely fair and accurate to identify Islam with violence.
Islam’s texts, Quran and Sunna, are infused with hate that has produced and will produce violence. It offers a carnal heaven for any Muslim who is killed while killing the enemies of Islam; which is anyone opposing the rule of Islam. The most hateful figure in the Quran is Allah and his(its?) delight in describing the multiple sadistic tortures, in detail, that it will endlessly exact upon all unbelievers. It spews specific hatred for Jews.
James C. says
He’s correct – because there are, have been, and will be, many other sources of violence in addition to Islam. As the history of the last 2,000 years alone makes clear. One cannot simply say Islam = violence. It is violent, in many ways, but has never had a monopoly of doing violence. All states use violence – they would collapse if they did not. Violence is a human failing – not an uniquely Mahometan one.
This is in no way a defence of Mahometanism; simply a statement of fact.
Westman says
Comparing a political religion to Nations?
Where in the Pope’s religion does it say that humanity is divided into the loved(believers) and hated(unbelievers) and the hated should be subdued and enslaved or killed?
Islam has a mandate to rule the world and eliminate the unbelievers by and in the end times, including all Jews. Which nation equates to that?
I’m agnostic, but if religious, it would appear that the Pope is trying to do Satan’s work for him – inviting the enslavement of the human race.
RegT says
James, every other religion I know of has grown up, has rejected violence, and matured. islam cannot mature, will not renounce violence and the killing of non-believers, because the very books they follow, qur’an, hadith, and sira, all tell them it is blasphemy to change islam in any what whatsoever. They have no desire to “grow up”, to cast away the vile, violent commands of their cult.
They have followed these commands for the 1400 years they have existed, hiding their hatred and violent plans of subjugation until such time as it is safe for them to “come out of the closet”. Major parts of the world suffered under islam for many years, and – if this anti-pope and the rest of the globalists and muslims have their way – it will do so again.
Norger says
I’m an atheist, but I have to say that this kind of false equivalence is just pure bullsh*t. So centuries ago, before the Reformation and the Enlightenment, terrible things were done in the name of Christianity. So the f*** what. Where is the modern day Christian analog to ISIS? Where are the Christian suicide bombers? What’s the Christian analog to Boko Haram, the Taliban, Al Quaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah etc. etc. etc.? Where is the endless wave of modern day “crusader” terrorists? The Pope is at best a moral coward.

This Pope seems to fail to understand that when Christians do horrible, violent acts, it is against the teachings of their holy book, the New Testament. On the other hand, when Islamists do horrible and violent acts, it is their “holy” book, the Koran and hadiths, which instructs and guides them to do so.
vlparker says
This man is either the biggest fool on earth or he is evil. Has he read the Koran? Does he know that it is an anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, anti-anything but islam rant by allah that exhorts muslims to kill non-muslims? Does he know that there is nothing like it in Christian theology, and that the violent Christians were actually breaking their own religious rules? When did Jesus ever say to spread Christianity by violence? Never.
During its history the Catholic Church has had many leaders that were politicians more than they were theologians. Thus, they became Church leaders in order to amass political power and consolidate empires. The Borja and Medici popes were interested in power and the Church was one vehicle to achieve that power. The same with the Habsburgs and the Holy Roman Empire. They weren’t interested in spreading Christ’s gospel, they were interested in empire building. They couldn’t have cared less about saving souls. Politicians corrupt institutions all the time, so it is no surprise that they corrupted the Church and continue to do so today. The pope is just another politician using his soapbox to advance his communist ideology.

Perhaps the greatest problem in the World today is how to deal with the exploding muslim population and influence without triggering an Armageddon.
Religious fundamentalists are being very polarizing and the World is being divided along religious lines as perhaps never before.
A solution to this MUST be found before all Hell breaks loose. I give the Pope credit with trying to find a road to peaceful co-existence. However I fear that he is having difficulty distinguishing between this and outright capitulation. I suspect that he has no idea where to draw the line. But he has lots of company because the Western democracies are struggling with the same problem.
We must maintain our principles and humanity in dealing with this problem or we are no better than they.
A wise man I once knew prophetically stated: “If you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything”. The Pope and our democratic leaders had better figure out what they stand for…and soon.
James C. says
A problem for the Pope is that since 1964 all Popes have been Islamopanderers. More and more this evil creep fits the profile of the “false prophet” of Revelation 13 (and other chapters).
“the wild beast, the false prophet, and the original serpent,” build an “image of the beast,” to cause everyone to “bow down and worship the wild beast and its image.”
And image can be literal or figurative. this creepy pretender to Christianity, is continually attempting to convince everyone…**everyone**…that Christianity is no better than islam, that it makes people behave in the same immoral and godless ways, that it is the **same** as what we all can see with our eyes is the Truth
about islam.
By his lying words, and his hugging and kissing the foul devil-worshipper from Egypt, he is attempting to portray islam in a positive light…to “build an image of the wild beast” that everyone will bow to in worship. In effect, he is saying that islam is a religion that is misunderstood by Christians and others, but that he is setting the recod straight, giving the moslims a face-lift, using all of his PR skills to improve the “image” islam has made for itself in the world as a war-mongering, murdering horde of rapists, liars all.
pope guy is lying through his yellowing teeth. And he knows it. Just as when satan lied to Eve, knew he was lying. When satan spoke to Judas about betraying Jesus, the demon made it sound like a positive thing, but Christians know how that turned out. The creepy pope knows that Christians are not like moslims, do not worship the devil as do moslims, and that any violence of the past was due to the Christian **not** following Chris’s commands or it was purely self-defense.
Jesus commanded us to “Love one another, just as I have loved you.” (Christians loving Christians) He said that we should, “Do to others what you want others to do to you.” ( family, friends and strangers). Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” And He gave an example…parable… to show who is our “neighbor.” Jesus said, “Those who live by the sword, will perish by the sword.” He said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” He said, “I give you my peace.” Christ also spoke about the importance of speaking the Truth and condemned lying as being from “the devil, the father of the lie.”
In the Book of Revelation, which Christ gave to an angel to give to the Apostle John, Jesus told us what is going to happen to all the “liars and those disgusting in their filth.”
“As far at it depends upon you, be peaceable with all men,” wrote the Apostle Paul.
moslims have their own islamic definition of “peace.” moslims don’t show love to anyone, not even family members. moslims don’t “do to others what they wish to be done to them.” moslims are not “peaceable” with anyone and they have no “love among themselves.”
and, moslims lie like the filthy rugs they plan to prey on. They lie to each other, they lie to everyone else. they pretend ‘peace’ and all the time, knowing it’s a pretense. And…their friend and fellow liar…the pope knows this.
He fits the profile of the “false prophet” that works along with the “wild beast” and the dragon, satan the devil, to build the image to the beast and then force everyone to bow down to it.
RegT says
Somehistory, in one sense islam IS the religion of peace. They believe that, once they have killed or enslaved all non-believers, there will be “peace” – the universal caliphate will be formed, and there will be none left to fight. That is why they continue to claim that title.
But even _that_ falls apart, because ten seconds after there are no longer any living infidels (except some sex slaves), they will go back to killing each other, Shia against Sunni.

One cannot slap the nom “Christian” on something and expect it to be anything other than what it is. Roman Catholicism is NOT Christian now, or has it ever been. I am not religious in the least, but your contention that Roman Catholicism “is NOT Christian now, or has it ever been” is ludicrous on its face. No serious, sensible, knowledgeable person (this of course would not include you) could possibly extend to you any credence here.
BTW, what is your opinion of Pope Urban II? Just wondering.
Ecosse1314 says
Well said Wellington
owensgate says
My point was in reference to Galatians 1:8, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” The Catholic Church has amended Gospel Scripture to include praying to Mary as “co-redemtrix” among many other non-Biblical dogmas. Prayer to anyone or any THING other than Jesus Christ is idolatry, a MAJOR Sin. Jesus is the be-all and end-all of all Salvation. “Religion” is MAN’s way of reconciling Man to God: Christianity is GOD’s way of reconciling God to Man. There is a distinguishing difference. Pomp, ceremony, gaudy vestments and paraphernalia are not the way to Salvation; Jesus will return to Jerusalem, NOT the Vatican. As for Urban II, beginning a war against the Moslems was perhaps the wrong way to address the issue. Maybe he should have proselytized a bit, and shown the error of their ways.
Wellington says

The Bible teaches us to love our enemies (and I’m not denying that sometimes it is tough love) and to pray for our persecutors.
The Koran and Hadiths teach the death of unbelievers. I wonder if the Pope thinks he will be exempt? or will he convert to save his life?

Of course the Pope may wish to find one written in his first language, Spanish. I’m assuming he knows how to use a computer but maybe he doesn’t. tim gallagher says
This Pope needs to read Robert Spencer’s book, “The History of Jihad” to find out why Christians had to fight back against the murderous hordes of Muslims who had invaded Europe. I just can’t believe how ill-informed this Pope seems to be when it comes to Islam. I think Christianity is the complete opposite of islam. Islam’s content is so full of calls for violence whereas Christianity always seems to seek peace, wherever that is possible. Christianity espouses the highest standards (which obviously human beings won’t always live up to) whereas Islam has a hate-filled attitude towards all non-Muslims, as far as I can see. The two religious ideologies are like chalk and cheese. This Pope seems to want to undermine and tear down Christianity, because saying that Christians are as violent and evil as Muslims, and just as bad as Muslims are, is, I think, really a terrible insult to Christianity. This is surely not what the leader of a Christian church should be doing. Maybe, if he thinks Christianity is no better than Islam, he should even leave Christianity behind. If Christianity is no better than evil islam,(which I don’t believe for one moment), then it hasn’t got much going for it, because Islam is a terrible ideology and a force for evil.

“Nowhere in Christian tenets is there a command to conquer by the sword; however, this is prescribed in Islamic texts and law, and has been steadily followed in varying degrees for 1,400 years.”
Pope Francis has consistently and conveniently overlooked this fact. He is bound and determined to support Islam as a peaceful religion, ignoring both the Qur’an and history.
Lavéritétriomphera says
Indeed, it seems forced conversions of Muslims to Christianity took place in Spain during the early 16th century.
Carol the 1st says
For self-protection of themselves and what they valued no doubt. Forced conversions to Islam always go hand in hand with rape and pillaging. The tenor is very different.

I’ve watched this Jesuit ideologue in a few meetings e.g. one with Leonardo Dicaprio. His eyes wander strangely (seems more than to do with language problems) and he often looks like he’s lost his place and is mistrustful of his surroundings. These flaws are likely what’s landed him his position as flunky and facilitator.

What is wrong with Pope Francis? Where did he get this distorted idea of history? The Muslims have been slaughtering Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, Buddhists, Hindus and Pagans – and anyone else who disagrees with their violent supremacist ideology – since the inception of Islam some 1,400 years ago. The jihadist war-cry “Allahu Akbar!” (Our God [Allah] is greater), goes all the way back to Muhammad himself. The Islamic jihad has claimed the lives of some 270 million people around the world – far more than the Crusades (which Muslims often use to denigrate the West), together with Communism, Nazism and Fascism combined.

Excellent summary, Aussie Infidel. It says all that needs to be said about the evil, murderous nature of Islam. I can’t believe what a liar this Pope is on Islam (or maybe just a complete idiot). How he somehow thinks islam is “peaceful” (as he seems to say quite often) is beyond me.
Wellington says
You understandably ask where Pope Francis got his “distorted idea of history.”
May I suggest, since Francis comes from Argentina, you look to Latin America as a whole for the answer, a major region of mankind suffused with bad economic ideas, perennial military rule, a “place” where you have a maid or are a maid, a victim-oriented mentality, an ingrained hatred of the most successful polity in history, i.e., the USA, et al.
Many Latin Americans are wonderful people but Latin America as a whole is a monumental failure. Look to this to understand Francis first and foremost.
Aussie Infidel says
Wellington, that’s as I suspected. Rightly or wrongly, I’ve always thought of Francis as an unreconstructed leftist. I’ve visited most countries in South America, and also met some wonderful people of all religious persuasions – and none. However, as you imply, South America per se, is a basket case economically and politically, because they followed some “bad ideas”. Argentina was once the most prosperous nation on earth, but endemic graft and corruption has left the people scraping the bottom of the barrel, so to speak. Other SA countries are not much better off – eg Venezuela – and it’s not likely to improve until the people extricate themselves from religious and political domination. Religion has no place in politics. People must be free to worship or not worship as they please. That’s everyone’s fundamental human right – and the essence of the UDHR.
OLDGUY says
My Pope is a little out of touch and comparing something that happened in the 11th century to the evil of islam in the 21st century makes no sense at all. The Pope is out of touch with reality! Promoting islam as a religion of peace is wrong.

I think this pope chose the wrong profession . He is admirably suited to be a policitician!
SamB says
Isn’t this true? And, the Papacy playing the biggest role in history. It required reform minded Christians to break this mold of violence. Me like Martin Luther, Knox, Calvin…are testimony to this religion’s violence. Then there is the Spanish inquisition, again this leader’s response to humanity. The Papacy has an agenda and it is for all to see that it has to make Islam moderate to subdue them theologically. The Pope is the de jure ruler of this world and Muslims ought to understand this.
Carol the 1st says
Hadn’t the Spaniards had about 700 years of Islam to deal with? Some muslims claimed they’d become Christian in order to be allowed to stay – but then they’d play Trojan Horse. I think I read that’s when the Inquisitors stopped being nice as they questioned these recent “converts”. It had been a tough centuries long battle and they very, very, very much did not care to lose.
UNCLE VLADDI says
So, islam commands its holy-mobster “muslim” gangsters to extort, enslave, and murder all non-muslims, on pain of death if they refuse (“apostatize”). Once caught and subdued, they are generously offered the chance to leave islam, or die. Since this is already the only choice islam itself has left them with, how is it our fault?!
UNCLE VLADDI says
As Archie said: “Pope sounds like a Muslim Convert, check the rugs in the Vatican.”

As Archie said: “Pope sounds like a Muslim Convert, check the rugs in the Vatican.”
Who told you that?
The pope did not say he agrees with forced conversions whether it is one way or the other. And he is “right” to a certain extent, because in the epic poem La chanson de Roland, Marsile’s wife was forced to convert to Christianity, this fact reflects probably a political reality at the time

The Pope isn’t God and does not speak for all Christians. He is a poser. He is NOT a man of God, he has turned himself into a man of politics. He has crossed that line.

Pope cites French epic poem to “prove” Christianity is as violent as Islam
…………..
The Pope is an idiot. The incident he refers to in the Song of Roland never took place historically.
