Steyn called Robert a “brave crusader”, using a trigger word, thereby outing himself as a shameless Islamophobe. He probably secretly dresses in period costume (armor, maybe) and runs around his bedroom waving a sword and belting out “Onward Christian Soldiers” at the top of his lungs. It’s really amazing how these books bring out the beast in supposedly respectable conservative commentators. Please do not feed them.
Matt says
Sounds like you’re the one they got triggered.
gravenimage says
Matt, Jewdog is a staunch Anti-Jihadist with a mordant sense of humor.
Littleone says
Bingo
Infidel says
Matt, jewdog was obviously being facetious. But that said, Steyn is on record as describing himself as an old school imperialist, and has in his videos, spoken highly of British colonialism. There is nothing about him that’s out of character when it comes to reviewing this book. Steyn has also described himself as an ‘Islamophobe’, w/o probing into the major question of whether or not the term itself is a valid one.
The only thing about Steyn that I find hard to reconcile: on one hand, he is a Roman Catholic, but on the other, he is a major fan of an empire which, among its major missions, fought Catholic imperialism in Europe on the side of emerging Protestant states, such as Prussia, Holland and the Nordic countries.
Carol the 1st says
Infidel – here are some thoughts from a ‘native’: Catholic and Protestant are both Christian and there’s no big sense of alienation. Catholicism likes to fancy it’s in first place however and is possessive – they discouraged young Catholics from attending Protestant services and they wanted married couples to both be Catholic. The English Reformation was a good counter to church corruption but that was way back then. As a young person I’d sometimes go into the church with Catholic friends; mass was in Latin and you’d sit and experience the statues, candles and incense and it inspired reverent feelings (but not much thought). It was stately but taboo-ridden and a little dull however – with lots of crabby nuns running the schools and emphasizing sexual ‘virtue’. By contrast Protestant churches had good sermons in plain English, placed little attention on Mary, and were often more lively with music, song, and youth and family events. Both sides of Christianity compliment and balance each other somewhat IMO.
Infidel says
Carol, thank you for your insight into this aspect of Catholic vs Protestant (I’m imagining that it’s Anglican, since the Lutheran church does have its differences from Canterbury)
gravenimage says
Thank you, Carol. I also grew up Episcopalian (Anglican) but in a Catholic neighborhood, so I often attended Catholic mass with friends–including Midnight Mass on Christmas eve.
James says
I guess this a humorous ironic comment meant to imply the opposite of what it says.
Infidel says
Since this seems to be the last story up today, off-topic, but Netanyahu rushed off-stage in Ashkelon after an incoming alarm on a threat of a rocket attack from Gaza. Thankfully, the attack was intercepted by the Iron Dome.
By now, the Israelis should state that enough is enough, invade Gaza and evict Hamas and Islamic Jihad completely from there. Maybe put them on the next flight to Turkey or Qatar, if they can’t simply massacre them
jewdog says
Right, except they won’t because they don’t want to babysit Gaza afterwards – the same sentiment has led Trump to a hands-off policy where possible. Erdogan’s Turkey is the biggest threat, at least as bad as Iran.
Infidel says
Don’t babysit it: return it to the status it was in 1989, before the first Iraq war. When the bulk of Palestinians were in Tunisia and elsewhere. And even consider annexing the territory, and deporting anybody who doesn’t want to be a peaceful citizen of Israel.
The comparison to Trump is not exactly apples to apples: an apples to apples would be if Mexico was lobbing rockets at the US despite a wall being there. Unlike the US, Israel can’t exactly fully disengage from the Middle East, since it’s a part of the Middle East
Infidel says
Also, Turkey is a bigger threat than Iran to Israel. In case of Iran, the Arabs have felt threatened by Shi’ite expansionism, and coalesced around Riyadh, and now, even Shias in Lebanon and Iraq are revolting against Iranian backed militias. That incompatibility is less a factor w/ Turkey, which is Sunni like the Arabs.
Not just that – Israel currently has diplomatic relations w/, and is recognized by the ex-Soviet ‘stans’, whose post Soviet but anti-Islamic leaders decided to have normal relations w/ Jerusalem, unlike other Muslim countries. But w/ Turkey drawing these countries into its orbit under the auspices of the Turkic Council, there would come a day – maybe sooner, maybe later – when one or more of these countries have leaders like Erdogan. Who in turn decide to strengthen relations w/ their Turkic brother Turkey, and become less friendly at best, and hostile at worst, to Israel.
Trick_or_Treat says
Just as this apostate heretic now heading the Roman Catholic Cult [‘imam Francis’] now appears to be looming ever clearer as the book of Revelation person of ‘The False Prophet’ with every day that passes, likewise, Iran, Russia, & Turkey, also appear to be looming ominously ever clearer with every day that passes as being the eschatological ‘Prime Triad’ of, “Persia, Gog, and Magog” alliance associated with Isaiah 17:1; Daniel 9:25-27; and Ezekiel Chapters 37 & 38.
There are many who seem to be living with their eyes ‘wide shut’.
James says
that is interesting and probably also true. Turkey is sort of disappointing. I thought they were the Westernized Muslim country that was compatible with the West and Germany especially. At least they have good restaurants. But I guess it is different now.
gravenimage says
James, there was a kernel of truth to this under Kemalism when Islam was partly sidelined; this is less and less the case there now.

Mark Steyn: Robert Spencer is “a brave crusader against the dopier multiculti illusions”
………………
Bravo, Mark Steyn!
Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY) says
Why is there no link to where Steyn said this about Spencer?
gravenimage says
Mark, I did some searching on Mark Steyn’s fine site and found it here:
“The Poisoning of Robert Spencer”
https://www.steynonline.com/7820/the-poisoning-of-robert-spencer
“Robert Spencer, the author of several bestselling books on Islam, a brave crusader against the dopier multiculti illusions and the proprietor of the indispensable Jihad Watch…”
It’s worth reading the whole piece.

Ah thank you for that link. I was looking for it on Steyn’s website. That’s one of the great thing about open source intelligence: people can collaborate on gathering information. If I may, I’ll give another example.
I won’t go into too much detail on the data I’ve gathered, but a watershed moment on using open-source intelligence was when Stephen Coughlin described the interfaith movement.
As he says. interfaith operation involving Muslims which use the terms “BRIDGES” and “MILESTONES” have a 100% chance of being an influence operation.
As one NSA agent said, “Follow the trails and find the nests”. It’s frightening to see how easy this information is to come by, while the authorities are so patently clueless!

Thanks, R. Scratton. I did my own search above before reading your post here.

“Robert Spencer is “a brave crusader against the dopier multiculti illusions”……
……shouldn’t be ‘multiculti DELUSIONS’? Everyone’s got the evidence of disastrous social failure staring them in the face every day, yet they persist in deliberately kidding themselves that they’re heading towards some kind of brave new Utopia? Could it be that those ‘enlightened individuals’ with this brave new (distorted) vision aren’t the ones who’ve actually got to live with it and pick up the pieces? Assuming those who have to live with it will still be in one piece themselves to do the picking-up?

Only when there is an end to political Islam, will there be peace.
peter says
Sorry there is nothing like non political Islam . The greatest event in the Islamic Calendar is the establishment of Islamic Caliphate. Islam is power politics and politics is Islam . The two cannot be divorced much different from other major religions of the world including Christianity ,Hinduism,Buddhism,Judaism etc .It is worse than communism and Marxism which do not invoke God in to the mix !
Don Ameche says
Agree 1000% Peter. There is no such thing as a NON political islam. IMHO there isn’t even a divide which could be ‘divorced’ should any one want to.
Also agree about Communism(socialism) and Marxism. Except the socialist ideologies have man ( pseudo-science) as their ‘religion’. About which they are just as fanatic.
I suppose one could even say the Communist/Socialist/Marxist fascists have their OWN kind if Jihad against all believers in God.
Timothy S says
According to one of Bill Warner’s books… About 37% of passages in reliable hadith pertain to Kafir. 81% of the Sira. 64% of the Koran.
It is an INHERENTLY political system, preoccupied with the methods of obtaining political dominance over the Kafir.
