Matthews is of course correct, except for the minor detail that when Soleimani covered “Don’t Be Cruel,” he sang “Be Cruel.”
These people’s intense hatred of President Trump has driven them mad.
“Chris Matthews Compares Soleimani to Elvis Presley and Princess Diana,” by Andrew Kugle, Washington Free Beacon, January 8, 2020 (thanks to the Geller Report):
MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews on Wednesday night compared deceased Iranian terror master Qassem Soleimani to Elvis Presley and Princess Diana.
“When some people die, you don’t know what the impact is going to be. When Princess Diana died, for example, there was a huge emotional outpouring,” Matthews said. “Elvis Presley in our culture—it turns out that this general we killed was a beloved hero of the Iranian people to the point where—look at the people, we got pictures up now—these enormous crowds coming out. There’s no American emotion in this case, but there’s a hell of a lot of emotion on the other side.”
Soleimani led the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps which trained, funded, and armed Iran-sympathetic terrorist groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and around the Middle East, killing thousands, including hundreds of Americans.
“Should our leaders know what they’re doing when they kill somebody?” Matthews asked Rep. Joaquin Castro (D., Texas).
Castro replied that Trump’s strategy of pulling out of the nuclear deal and putting pressure on Iran has failed.
“They very much could have anticipated that Iranians would react in this way, both the Iranian public but also that the government would strike back,” Castro said. “This speaks to a much larger issue, Chris, which is the president has had a very chaotic and erratic foreign policy, especially with respect to Iran.”…

The German public broadcaster ZDF simply named Islamist terror ” dispute”
Is the Islamist terror for the German television channel ZDF only a “clash of civilizations”? The public broadcaster is criticized for its bizarre headline: In an article on the anniversary of the terror attack on the French satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” (January 7, 2015, 12 dead), ZDF lists violent reactions of Islamists to caricatures, writings and films critical of Islam. For example, the article mentions the film “Submission” by Dutch director Theo van Gogh († 47), who was brutally murdered by an Islamist in 2004. Or the cartoons of the Dane Kurt Westergaard (84 years old), who only narrowly escaped an Islamist assassination attempt in 2010. The article also mentions the attacks in concert halls in Paris in 2015 (130 dead) and in Manchester in 2017 (23 dead), which were carried out by the ISIS terrorist militia out of hatred of the Western world. The headline of the article caused outrage: “Almost 30 years of dispute in retrospect”. In a tweet, ZDF also praised the article with the words: “This was the dispute between the Islamic and Christian worlds” (Screenshot above).Cartoons on one side, terrorist attacks on the other. Is this really a “quarrel” for ZDF? Historian Michael Wolffsohn (72 years old) has strongly criticized it. “This is not a dispute between the Islamic and Christian world. This was and is a conflict between intolerance and tolerance, contempt for humanity and human dignity, open and totalitarian society,” Wolffsohn told the tabloid BILD.The historian continues: “In that case, ZDF, like many others and so often in this country, deliberately uses the typical head-in-the-sand language. With its help – unfortunately – existing conflicts are to be played down.”

There are about a hundred differences between Soleimani and the other two. Neither of them were military commanders sending insurgent troops to kill and be killed.
Chris Matthews made a patently absurd comparison. If he had at least compared Soleimani to Rocky Balboa or Michael Jordan, I would find that more truthful.
Would Matthews have called Hitler a ‘rock star’ after Hitler fired on Americans?
Soleimani was not just staying in his safe, unthreatened country and enhancing military preparedness. Soleimani was actively planning and directing attacks on Americans and their Allies.
The American air force shot down Admiral Yamamoto in the South Pacific for the same reason as it fired at Soleimani. They were both directing attacks on American troops.

Good post, Mortimer–but I wonder about this:

….
Rocky Balboa is a fictional figure–and while boxing *is* violent, Rocky Balboa was not a vicious person, nor did he murder anyone. If anything, he is more of a generally admirable figure.
And Michael Jordan is famed as an iconic basketball player. He could be an aggressive jerk at times, but has never to my knowledge been actually violent, let alone killed anyone. He is also still alive.
Not sure why you decided to link Soleimani to these two figures.

I think he’s only trying to compare the public’s emotional reaction to those deaths. Cutesy but stupid. Yes the public became very sad when Valentino died too.
It might be a little better comparison to the feelings after JFK’s assassination or the 9/11 murderous attack but, of course, it would take some courage to try to do that.
The best analogy would be to any of the other spontaneous (?) demonstrations of rage Iran and the muslim world are so adept at “staging”.
Always wise, of course, to call upon a political opponent in an election year for an “unbiased” and accurate analysis.
mortimer says
Spontaneous? No. The protests against the hijab were ‘spontaneous’. This show of propaganda was orchestrated by the regime and achieved its goal of deluding the naïve Pollyannas in the American media like Chris Matthews.
They want the West to fear them. Meanwhile, in planet reality, the mullahs are not popular in Iran and the mood of Iran is turning against them.
Even with 40 years of brainwashing, this is the last gasp of the mullahocracy.
Now that it’s seen that they accidently shot down a Ukrainian airplane, the mullahs’ popularity will plumment even more.
The Iranian military is a danger to Iranians first.
David says
Why is the plane shooting being called an accident?
Infidel says
It was certainly negligence on the part of Teheran’s civil aviation authorities. On a night when they were launching missiles against the Al Assad base in Iraq, they should have shut down the airport and postponed all flights. I don’t so much blame the missile launcher: they were on high alert, and the launcher had 2 modes – manual and automatic. If it was in automatic mode, the aircraft taking off could have well triggered it.
It was not so much an accident as much as an unintentional shoot down of the plane – a black eye to Iran’s propaganda efforts. They had projected themselves as victims for Soleimani’s killing, and now, they’d be the subject of international opprobrium for downing this plane
PRCS says
Knowing that U.S. aircraft might retaliate, the Iranian government should have closed the airport to civilian air traffic.
But an aircraft’s operation is the Pilot in Command’s responsibility: preflight to shutdown.
The aircraft should never have taken off in that environment.

Does Matthews not realize that in Iran, news is tightly controlled. There were 4x- larger-than-life pictures of Soleimani on every corner and a controlled news media that is constantly telling Iranian people about their glorious Shi’ite victories. Like many other commenters up above, I find this comparison that this irrational clown is making very strange and tortured. Although the “mourning” for Soleimani is probably forced to some degree, or the Iranian people are totally brainwashed and fed false information on every issue, the main thing I take from the mourning of an evil piece of murderous garbage like Soleimani is that it shows that countries like Iran (and many Muslim countries) just love and support murderous evil. It is the equivalent of evil people who would have been upset about and mourned the deaths of Hitler or Stalin. All it shows is that the people in Iran are impressed by and admire evil monsters like Soleimani, and shows what a sick society Iran must be. The upset in some sections of our societies over the deaths of harmless, reasonably decent people like Elvis or Princess Diana (personally, I didn’t dislike Elvis or Princess Diana, but was not a big fan of either of them, so I wasn’t one of the people who had a big emotional reaction) seem to me to show that our societies admire far better, more pleasant people than evil creatures like Soleimani, so I think it just shows that our societies are very different and our societies are far more civilised than places like Iran. The types of people a society admires and mourns surely says a lot about that society
gravenimage says
Good analysis, Tim.
My husband and I were on vacation in Seattle and took a side trip to Victoria the day after Diana died. There were front page tributes everywhere and every shop on Douglas Street was decorated with her image and hundreds of Union Jacks.
Needless to say, no one was killed in mourning her, as in Iran.
Like you, I always considered Princess Diana a bit overrated, but was also thought she was a decent person and was sad that she had died.
Comparing her–or Elvis Presley, who was a talented singer and did change the cultural landscape with the birth of rock and roll–with the homicidal Soleimani is just disgusting.
tim gallagher says
Yes, gravenimage, I just felt that the way the people in the western world and the people in Iran mourned these very different types of people, the murderous, vicious monster as opposed to the peaceful Princess and the pop singer, said plenty about the different types of societies involved. It is a weird comparison this TV presenter makes. Sometimes some of these presenters seem like complete idiots. To my mind, admiring and mourning Soleimani is equivalent to mourning Hitler or Stalin or jack the Ripper. It’s really “off”. Princess Diana didn’t impress me all that much, I always thought she loved the photo opportunity, but probably wouldn’t ever dig in and do any of the hard work her charities would do. She was pleasant enough though. I guess I liked early Elvis Presley singing rock and roll, but some of his later crooning type stuff didn’t appeal to me. I probably much preferred Roy Orbison way back then. There are many singers and musicians I do like. I listen to and watch a lot of music on youtube. I do a bit of singing (or try to) and am trying to learn to play guitar a little better.(it might help ward off Alzheimer’s) I put three songs up on youtube a while back. Google “Tim Gallagher cover version of Go rest high on that mountain on youtube” and you should be able to see my attempt to sing this Vince Gill song, ( an excellent singer-songwriter and guitarist) which was, apparently, a tribute he wrote when his bother died.
gravenimage says
Beautiful, Tim–thank you.
I love music, but, alas, have no musical talent at all. That doesn’t keep me from enjoying it, though.
And you are quite right about both who the West and Islam mourn, and the manner in which we do so. Compare and contrast.
tim gallagher says
Thanks very much, gravenimage. I’m glad you enjoyed it. You always seem to be very encouraging to the commenters here at Jihad Watch (except when you are tearing some people, who deserve it, apart.) Just to finish on music. Years ago, I used to sing in a duo with a long-time friend of mine. ( around 40 years ago). His son and daughter have turned out to be quite big stars in music here in Australia and also in Europe. My friend thought my youtube songs were pretty good so he played them for his daughter and her husband, who is a pretty well known musician and has a recording studio and my friend said that they were impressed and his daughter’s husband said he wouldn’t mind recording me singing some songs. All very strange at my age, but, I did think, well, why not? It was nice to hear anyway. My friend will provide some better accompaniment and we’ll see what happens. By the way, I don’t think I have much musical talent. I watch really talented musicians playing their instruments and am very impressed. As a would be musician I have never made much progress. Very slow on the uptake. I think I just got a bit lucky and can sing reasonably well. Anyway, back to the fight against islam, which I consider to be more important.

What grotesque calumny–just sickening. But given the vicious nonsense Chris Matthews has been spewing for the past week over at MSNBC lauding this Jihadist thug this does not really surprise.
More:
“When some people die, you don’t know what the impact is going to be. There’s no American emotion in this case, but there’s a hell of a lot of emotion on the other side.”

What is this obsession with “emotion” from the left in recent years, as though feeling–*any* kind of feeling at all, with any object–were an unalloyed good thing? I’ve seen this from others.
Would Chris Matthews look at a Hitler rally and be impressed with all of that emotion?

However, this is secondary to the clear indication of how Political Correctness is replacing moral judgement. Do we now stop to consider the aggragate feelings of any “bad guys” before taking action?
