What could possibly go wrong? Surely they will become loyal, stable, productive Afghan citizens now, won’t they?
“Taliban’s 5,000 prisoners will be released as US, Taliban peace deal is signed,” Khaama Press, December 30, 2019 (thanks to The Religion of Peace):
The release of 5,000 prisoners of Taliban has been written in to the peace agreement draft which is going to be soon signed between United States and Taliban, AP reported.
A Taliban official familiar with the on-again, off-again talks taking place in Qatar, confirmed to AP that the release of around 5,000 prisoners of Taliban has been written in to the agreement which is under discussion.
But some analysts say freeing prisoners could undermine peace in Afghanistan.
“There’s a need for Afghan and U.S. officials to do their due diligence on any Taliban prisoners they’re planning to release, in order to minimize the likelihood that they’ll set free jihadists that can do destabilizing things and undercut a fledgling peace process,” warned Michael Kugelman, deputy director of the Asia Program at the U.S.-based Wilson Center.
Analysts and even the United States’ own Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John F. Sopko said neither Afghanistan nor the U.S. is ready for the Taliban prisoners’ release.
Every past attempt at re-integration has been costly and a failure….

If we go through with this, then the entire war effort will have been in vain. All of the American soldiers who have been killed and injured, all of the ones with severe brain trauma, etc., will have received those injuries or death totally in vain.
We owe it to the American soldiers who have suffered and died in this war not to release these prisoners.

There is no mention above of what the Taliban is promising from their side

Honestly, 5000 Afghani jihadis is a piss in the ocean. How many Afghanis of fighting age are jihadis? A few million. What angers me is that the US side is calling this a peace process. Get all American personnel out of Afghanistan and never let any Afghani enter the US. Problem solved. And yes: bomb and drone the shit out of foreign terrorist training in Afghanistan.
Savvy Kafir says
I agree with you on every point!
Infidel says
I not only understand, but endorse the president’s determination to get troops out of Afghanistan. However, there is no need to sign any agreement w/ the Taliban, or release any prisoners. Just gather all troops and leave, and tell Americans that just like in the case of Iraq, don’t go there! Also, while leaving, bomb all their poppy fields and Taliban military munitions, and then be out. No need to worry about whether Ashraf Ghani stays or falls: leave that to Afghanistan’s neighbors like Tajikistan, Iran and Uzbekistan. None of those countries are pally w/ the Taliban.
As for the prisoners, just execute them, and toss their bodies to sea, like Osama and Baghdadi.
Savvy Kafir says
Yep. Sounds like a solid plan. If only…

Infidel, your political ideology was condemned and punished at Nuremberg.
Savvy Kafir says
Mortimer, there is a VAST difference between murdering innocent Jews and executing jihadis.
Infidel says
Yeah, I fear that if Afghanistan wins the war against the US. But if that happens, there are far worse things for us to worry about than a Nuremburg trial of Americans by an Afghan Jihadist tribunal.
Also, fwiw, islam is a lot closer to the political ideology you’re referring to than any ideology I believe

We must convince Muslims generally that the Koran is manmade, because the Koran is a DEADLY, LETHAL TROOP MOTIVATOR.
Savvy Kafir says
Good luck with that project. You’re gonna need it.

Mortimer, how *is* your project going? How many Muslims have you deprogrammed so far?

What about a peace deal between Taliban and Afghan Government? ( Why is the US involved?)
and you do not want Afghanistan to become a client state of Pakistan.( if US leaves)
Scott Carlson says
Trump didn’t sign a treaty with the Taliban. I remember someone posting this several months ago and it was fake news.

When the US-Taliban peace deal is signed, 5,000 Taliban jihadis will be freed from prison
………………
How can any sane person consider *the Taliban* to be partners for peace? Insanity.
