Bernie Sanders on Cuba: “Is That A Bad Thing?”

Feb 28, 2020 10:00 am By Hugh Fitzgerald

On 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper asked Bernie Sanders about his early enthusiasm for Fidel Castro, the late Cuban dictator. Sanders said that he was no longer an enthusiast, but did want us all to remember that Castro had done some good. He praised the literacy program implemented by Castro, asking, “Is that a bad thing?”

No, it’s a not a bad thing. But it hardly makes up for 60 years of dictatorship, suppression of free speech, torture and imprisonment of political prisoners, destruction of much of the economy which for a long time was kept afloat by infusions of cash from the Soviet Union.

Anderson Cooper didn’t say it, but perhaps we can point out the obvious. There is hardly a dictator living or dead who hasn’t done some things that Bernie Sanders might appreciate, but their monstrous evil makes it absurd to even talk about those “good things.”

Think of Benito Mussolini, he of the jutting jaw, the endless speeches from a balcony at the Piazza Venezia, the gestures. He was known, because of that jaw and the poses he would assume, as “Il Granitico.” He did some good. He famously made the trains run on time (“I treni sono puntuali”). He drained the Pontine Marshes in Lazio, turning malaria-infested swamplands into some of the most productive farmlands in all of Italy. But then there is the other side. He also murdered his political opponents, famously beginning with the politician Giacomo Matteotti. On May 30, 1924, Matteotti openly spoke in the Italian Parliament, alleging that the Fascists had committed fraud in the recently held elections, and denounced the violence they used to gain votes. Eleven days later he was kidnapped and killed by Fascists. There were many others thrown into jail, tortured, and murdered, by Mussolini and his jackbooted Black Shirts. He sent troops and military hardware to help the fascist Franco – Mussolini’s great admirer – in the Spanish Civil War. He sent troops to invade Ethiopia, because it was there, and they conquered the country, using mustard gas, and committing war crimes against the overmatached Ethiopians. This war was remembered in the Fascist song “Faccetta Nera” (Little Black Face). Mussolini passed the anti-Jewish laws that deprived Italian Jews of the possibility of practicing most professions, prevented them from acquiring higher education, limiting their rights to own property and businesses. Mussolini joined Hitler as his faithful ally during World War II. But he did drain the swamps, and he did make the trains run on time. Is that a bad thing?

Then there was Hitler himself. Yes, the Nazis tortured, gassed, shot, stabbed, burned to death, six million Jews and millions of others – Resistants, Soviet prisoners, political opponents of the Nazis throughout Europe. Hitler was responsible for the deaths of tens of millions. But let’s not forget that Hitler also built the Autobahn, the first national network of roads constructed anywhere in the world. And what’s more, the Nazis mass-produced the Volkswagen, the “People’s Car,” to take advantage of that new highway system. Was that a bad thing?

Joseph Stalin is another dictator whom Bernie Sanders might want to study. Sure, Stalin did condemn tens of millions to death, sometimes by slow death in labor camps or on construction projects, and sometimes by immediate execution. During the Great Purges, Marshal Tukhachevsky and many other army officers were murdered. Writers – most notably, Osip Mandelshtam and Isaac Babel – were executed. The charges were always absurd, even crazy — Babel was accused of being a “Trotskyite” and at the same time a “spy for Austria and France.” The Old Bolsheviks were made to endure show trials where the chief state prosecutor, Andrey Vyshinsky, accused them of being “wreckers” of the Soviet state. But just think of the good Stalin did. His laborers built the White Sea Canal. They also built the magnificent Moscow Subway. Were those a bad thing?

Finally, since we began this piece with Castro, and Bernie Sanders’s praise for Fidel, let’s end with Venezuela. A dictator, Nicolas Maduro, the heir of another dictator, Hugo Chavez, has continued Chavez’s policy of suppressing freedom of the press and speech, and of jailing political dissidents. Five million Venezuelans have fled and now live abroad. As long as oil prices were high, Hugo Chavez had been able to improve literacy rates, access to food and housing, but as oil prices fell, the reversal beginning after around 2012, the economy began to fall apart, and under Maduro it has cratered. But after all, Chavez and Maduro did introduce musical education, especially training in violin, for hundreds of thousands of poor students throughout the public schools, in what became know as “El Sistema.”

In a televised interview with Mexican-American journalist Jorge Ramos on Univision on February 22, 2019, Sanders said he did not consider Guaido to be the legitimate president of Venezuela. Every other Democratic candidate has recognized Guaido as the “interim president” of Venezuela, which is what the American government has named him. For Maduro “lost” to Guiado in a vote that the Organization of the American States and a Catholic Bishop’s council in Venezuela said was illegitimate. Other countries quickly followed in no longer recognizing Maduro as Venezuela’s president, including Colombia and Brazil.

No doubt Bernie Sanders is impressed with El Sistema.

But he might wish to reconsider how much about El Sistema is true, and how much is hype.

In November 2014, British music scholar Geoffrey Baker published a newspaper article and a book that disputed many of the claims made by and about El Sistema, and suggested that much of the publicly circulating information about the program was hyperbolic or simply false. The book’s allegations included a culture of authoritarianism, hyper-discipline, exploitation, competition, and gender discrimination. It argued that the program was deeply conservative beneath its progressive exterior and that its claims of social transformation were unproven and exaggerated. For example, Baker’s work alleges that the IADB’s claim that El Sistema was reaping about $1.68 in social dividends for each $1 invested was based on dubious calculations and had been withdrawn by the bank itself. Considerable controversy ensued, with furious denunciations by Sistema advocates and enthusiastic responses from music education experts. In his review of Baker’s book, Damian Thompson, arts editor for The Spectator, highlighted Baker’s contention that the rampant sexual abuse of young musicians in El Sistema is part of “classical music’s dirty little secret.”

So there has been some political and economic repression in Venezuela. Five million people have fled the country. Bernie’s not denying that. But think of all those violin players. Was that a bad thing?

Bernie Sanders just wants to be fair. Some rulers are tough, really tough. He doesn’t deny it. “They do stuff we may not like.” But we shouldn’t forget the good stuff they did, either – making the trains run on time, draining the swamps, building the autobahn, digging the White Sea canal, giving Venezuelan children violin lessons. Was any of that a bad thing?

Fidel Castro ran Cuba as his personal bank account and as his personal estate. All Cubans were slaves and Castro was the slave owner. His personal decrees or even his whims were the law of the country. He had unlimited, unopposable power. Apparently, this is what Sanders wants for himself … unlimited power.

The Dems are so transparently projecting their unquenchable lust for absolute power upon the current president who has never declared his admiration for any dictator or dictatorship.

Sanders is Ralph Nader on steroids with an added love for Karl Marx.

For Bush Sr. it was “Read my lips”; for Sanders it is “Read my red face”. One can just imagine how far that redometer-indicated anger would go in wealth redistribution, forced re-education, and the withdrawal of rights from the citizens. Make no mistake – Sanders represents a revolution that might start peacefully, yet, encountering resistance, would quickly follow the precedence of past dictatorships.

Inside Bernie is a totalitarian screaming to get out.

We have seen on several occasions that while making a speech Bernie has had the microphone grabbed from him by a devoted “fan” while Bernie has just faded into the background with a helpless shrug. That tells me how easily Bernie will lose control of things if he ever gets elected as President (God forbid). His most fanatical communist followers will pull his strings like the little puppet he is.

Castro’s daughter Juliana had to secretly escape to Spain. She should be asked what it was really like living under her father’s dictatorship.
Stalin’s daughter also fled her father’s tyranny.

Bernie Sanders is a very shallow man with only one dogma that he believes in with blind faith and naïve fervor: the redistribution of wealth.

Sanders saw this redistribution of wealth in the Soviet Union, but he did not see the Gulag and I doubt he read a book about it.

Sanders has a certain childish quality to him, in spite of his growling voice. He is naïve about how economics work, the stock market, banking and big businesses. He has ONE and ONLY ONE THOUGHT in his mind: take from the rich and give to the poor.

It’s highly possible that the current sell-off on the stock markets has something to do with investor ANXIOUS FEAR of Sanders’s popularity among Democrat voters.

Thought-provoking article by Hugh Fitzgerald. I do not think Sanders will follow Fitzgerald’s advice to LEARN SOMETHING about Stalin. Sanders will learn NOTHING. He will gladly and blindly take the ship of state over the dangerous waterfall the Venezuela has just fallen over.

The naïve, mysterious, unstudied FAITH of Sanders in communism is that of a MAGICAL, MYTHICAL and MYSTERIOUS FANTASY ISLAND … in the realm of a HOLY MYSTERY of REDISTRIBUTION.

It’s the Marxist version of TRANSUBSTANTIATION. Once the communist revolution comes, the MYTHICAL RHEINGOLD is seized by the VANGUARD OF THE PROLETARIAT who give it like communion to the toiling masses of unhappy, starving peasants who become happy well-fed, literate peasants toiling for the GLORY of the COMMUNIST PARTY.

That is his fantasy. Do you think he’ll give up his pleasant, but absurd fantasies? Not a chance. Sanders is a dangerous, ideological idiot.

Yes, a dictator teaching people to read is good but it is then offset by the controls that are inevitably put in place by the dictator to make certain that the people read only what the dictator wants them to read. Bernie doesn’t mention that — being the doofus that he is.

  6. Ray Jarman says

    Feb 28, 2020 at 1:35 pm

While it is not pertinent to Mr. Fitzgerald’s article, the purge trials were only part of the Bolshevik’s tendency to eat their own. Ioseb Jughashvili (Stalin, meaning man of steel) not only put the original members of the party on fake trials such as Lev Kamenev, he murdered Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin). Hryhorii Petrovsky (first NKVD chief) and other high ranking members of NKVD leaders were ordered to be killed by Stalin and any other person who came close to him. He never trusted anyone and I think it was interesting that it was Lavrentiy Beria, KGB director, who killed Stalin and was subsequently order to be killed by Nikita Khrushchev. The only way any dictator, especially a communist one, can remain in power is by shear brutality and those around Sanders have indicated that they would have no problem implementing interment camps and have admitted it. I am sure that Sanders is aware of Lenin’s famous words, “The goal of Socialism is Communism.” The big difference between Communism or any other dictatorial government and Islam is that totalitarian regime can be removed and the people can return to a less oppressive government in a short time but Islam is much more difficult because of the penalty for apostasy is death.

That Marxist politician Bernie Sanders is ignorant beyond understanding To praise Communist Cuba and say the Fidel Castro had “done some good ” is ignorance too the extreme.

To give on example of this is some years ago in the newspaper there was a small article about a felon who escaped America to fled to Communist Cuba because he ,naturally, didn’t want to go to a US federal prison.

Later he willingly came back to the United States to serve is time in a US prison because he said the existing in Communist under the rule of Castro was so terrible that he’d rather go to Federal prison and serve time in that place than spend the rest of his life existing under the Marxist dictatorship of Castro.

Furthermore ,Since the subject of Cuba ,Communism as in Marxism, been brought up, this is thus an appropriate time It’s important to define the concept of Communism .Otherwise known as Marxism. There the pipe-dream of a pure Marxist society in the philosophical political economic fantasy that no one is ever really in need and everyone “Works according to his abilities and receives according to his needs” In contrast, the is the reality of Communism which is that Marxism is a philosophy that no intelligent person can actually, truthfully accept is not only unrealistic and unnatural but also a joke and an excuse to set up and prop-up tyranny. For evil is always looking for an excuse. Marxism is just the excuse need to set up brutal regimes. Such as that tyrannical and oppressive Communist state of Cuba

What a falsehood speaking fool Bernie sanders . truly ,is.

Bernie Sanders had exposed his own total lack of wisdom and understanding when he said that Fidel Castro has during his rule “done some good things. What a ignorant old fool Sander’s has now shown himself to be.

For example, when news came of the death of Fidel Castro and that so many Cubans in Miami ,Florida who had escaped that Island prison of Cuba under Castro heinous brutal and cruel tyranny were both happy and relieved about the news that Castro is dead. Since in America they are free to vent how they actually felt about the vicious, murderous dictator the Cubans living in Miami rejoiced n great jubilation’s.

For many them experienced first-hand the hideous tyrannical regime of the evil man, Fidel Castro. As The Bible teaches “When the wicked perish there are shouts of joy.” Proverbs 11:10. What a brutal, cruel and oppressive tyrant that Castro was. What a heinously oppressive and wicked man that dictator was. As the Bible teaches “All the days of the oppressed are wretched…” Proverbs 15:15. Likewise, the Bible teaches in Proverbs 29:2. “When the wicked rule, the people groan.” Therefore let the name of that murderously cruel brutal dictator rot in the annals of history. For the Bible also predicts “The name of the wicked will rot.” Proverbs 10:7. [N.I.V.]

Maybe, in time, the name of Bernie Sander will also rot

Show me ONE candidate who’s been talking about the issues that are actually bothering the voters – student debt/cost of education, stagnant wages, healthcare costs, the crippling power of Wall Street hedge fund managers and so on. Everyone else just goes on and on about Trump, racism, climate change, rights of transgender undocumented immigrants who can’t pick their Spanish pronouns, and so on. Yeah, to Bernies discredit, he too is on the same page as his rivals on things like open borders, free welfare for illegal immigrants and so on, which will go against him vis a vis Trump. But despite those things in common, he at least talks about the above relevant issues that are bothering his voters.

For once, I wil have to disagree!

This is not to defend Sanders.

But to put the Cuban regime in a row with Stalin and other mass murderers is – at least – questionable.

And yes, there are good things about Cuba! Cubans have free medical care. Child mortality is on a par with Canada and lower than in the U.S. according to the (U.S. based!) World Bank.

The same applies to analphabetism (both Cuba and Canada 97%), here the U.S. is better (99%).
Life expectancy is 78.7 years, better than several EU member states (EU average is 80.2 years for all states), USA is 79.8 years (wikipedia).

There are a great many countries which are worse, eg violence in the streets, poverty, dictator-ruled, but they are never badmouthed in this way.

While I do not support the totalitarian policy of the Cuban regime, black-and-white pictures of this kind make me sick.

    • Infidel says

      Feb 29, 2020 at 7:06 pm

The reasons that child mortality and life expectancy in the US is lower than Cuba are:

      – The opioid epidemic
      – Drug addiction rates among new mothers

One more good thing that Cuba does that Bernie’s not copying: Cuba hasn’t embraced drug legalization, not even of those ‘harmless’ ones like pot. Maybe some Bernie bros can go to Havana and tell Raul Castro how he’s doing it wrong

I do not know how old Ole Peterson is but I do remember Castro telling the Cuban people how life was going to be wonderful under his form of democracy, and in a few short weeks how drastically lives changed under the death squads.

If only visitors to Cuba were to go off the beaten paths and see the beautiful places that lie in ruin, because they all need to share, or talk to people who are not afraid to speak the truth.

Bernie is a throwback to the Tsarist days when Russian Jews, and plenty of others, had no alternative to the reactionary policies of the Tsar but to turn to Socialism or Communism (Menshaviks and Bolsheviks). After not too many years, by the 1930s, when the Red Terror and the Red Famine in Ukraine arose, it should have been obvious that Tsarism had been replaced by an even more repressive autocracy. As for Jews, while the Bolsheviks liberated them from the onerous restrictions under the Tsar, Stalin became antisemitic, and despite briefly supporting Zionism, Soviet policy became opposed Israel with deadly intent.
Yet, despite all these negatives, some Jews still cling to the meretricious visions of Socialism, hoping that those fleeting days of liberation right after 1917 can be recaptured and distilled into something pure and untainted. It’s a tribute to the power of dreams and inertia, but it has never worked and it never will..
