This is patently unconstitutional and unlikely to stand, but de Blasio’s omission is noteworthy. As he has assiduously courted support from Muslim advocates and Islamic groups, it is unlikely that the existence of mosques in New York just slipped his mind. He threatens those whom he knows are susceptible to threats, and not those among whom are some people who are not only his allies but who are unlikely to submit to either the coronavirus prohibitions or his threats.
“De Blasio: Synagogues That Defy COVID-19 Restrictions Will Close Permanently If Necessary,” by Hana Levi Julian, Jewish Press, March 28, 2020 (thanks to the Geller Report):
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned the Jewish community, again, not to hold services in the synagogues. Failing cooperation, he said, permanent closure would be the next step.
Although many shuls have closed in deference to the city’s COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions, some have not and instead continued to hold minyanim despite the city’s orders to close in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
“We’ve had extraordinary, across the board rabbinical support from all the different elements of the Jewish community and the same is true of other faiths as well, de Blasio said at his daily news briefing on Friday.
“A small number religious communities, specific churches, specific synagogues are unfortunately not paying attention to this guidance even though it’s so widespread. So I want to say to all those who are preparing for the potential of religious services this weekend, if you go to your synagogue, if you go to your church, and attempt to hold services after having been told so often not to, our enforcement agents will have no choice but to shut down those services.
“I don’t say that with any joy. It’s the last thing I would like to do, because I understand how important people’s faiths are to them, and we need our faith in this time of crisis. But we do not need gatherings that will endanger people.”
“Everyone has been instructed that if they see worship services going on, they will go to the officials of that congregation and inform them that they need to stop the services and disperse.
“If that does not happen, they will take additional action up to the point of fines and potentially closing the building permanently. Again, that will begin this weekend….

are mosques closed in uk?
Jayell says
Churches and synagogues in the UK have all shut up shop temporarily, as per the general request by the Government – at least no illicit openings have been reported. But they’re all allowed to do funerals, apparently, with a very strict limit on attendees. There have, however, been reports of a large proportion of mosques paying no attention to the government and carrying on as usual, to the extent that an internet campaign with a petition has been organised, asking the Government to shut them down permanently if they continue to disregard the regulations. Matters have become even worse as a spike in infections has been reported in the midlands (Wolverhampton, I believe) that has been traced to the activities of the many muslims there. The matter got aired on LBC and the presenter (who didn’t sound best pleased) arranged an interview with someone from the Muslim Council of Britain. I’m afraid I turned the radio off as soon as I heard the pompous, fatuous old gasbag’s voice rather than throw something at the set because I suspected that we’d only hear yet more of their self-righteous lying drivel. If these insufferably arrogant charlatans want to infect and kill each other in their own countries, that’s fine with me. But if they persist in showing their usual arrant disrespect for the rest of the UK by compromising the safety and well-being of the rest of us in this way, then the only answer would be a lock-down into their own areas which they would not be allowed to leave at all on pain of prosecution. Bearing in mind their long, dismal track record in their dealings with their hosts in the UK, a permanent lock-down would be a blessing for all of us.
Wellington says
Thanks for that narration, Jayell, dismal though what it conveys is. God, what a colossal error the UK and so many other Western nations (including my own, America) made by letting Muslims into their countries in the first place. I fear that the damage may be permanent. Never would I like more to be wrong than here.
I detest Islam. I don’t see how anyone who is possessed of common sense, moral intelligence, proper knowledge and a love of liberty can do otherwise, though meeting these four “criteria” is a problem in and of itself, absent as they are in so many of our species, including many of our species highly well educated and thus demonstrating that education without wisdom is meaningless or even worse than meaningless.
P.S. Glad to know you spared your radio.
mortimer says
Wellington, I see it a different way: we have an opportunity to deprogram Muslims by showing them that the Koran is a manmade document. There is nothing miraculous about the Koran. It is presumptuous, preposterous and absurd. The sun doesn’t set in a muddy spring of water.
gravenimage says
Mortimer–as always, with all respect–you never say why pious Muslims would be apt to listen to those they consider “filthy Infidels”.
And *surely* you don’t consider it a good thing that the foolish West has allowed hordes of ravening Muslims to flood into our societies, raping and murdering us? We were *much* safer when Islam was largely isolated.
Wellington says
Well, mortimer, if one can demonstrate to a Muslim that the Koran is manmade (which it clearly is), what you call deprogramming, then I would contend that this is synonymous with that Muslim concluding Islam is a sham and becoming an ex-Muslim, dangerous though leaving Islam publicly is because one of the many obnoxious and heinous tenets of this despicable religion is death for apostasy.
As for my comment respecting the four “criteria,” while this applies to everyone, I had chiefly in mind adult non-Muslims, virtually all of whom should realize by now, going on twenty years since 9/11, what a cruel farce of a religion Islam truly is.
LB says
“…But if they persist in showing their usual arrant disrespect for the rest of the UK by compromising the safety and well-being of the rest of us in this way…”
You do realize that muslims have already done that and then some when they first entered your country (some ~40 years ago), right? Are you not aware that by now they have infested every part of UK’s government and public institutions (police, social services, local councils, etc.)? Are you not aware that because of that they have the power to do whatever they want with no consequences, like mass organised gang-raping of non-muslim underage girls? Do you have any inkling of self-awareness to see how the UK has been reduced to an enslaved country?
But no no no, that doesn’t make you angry. What REALLY gets you riled up is the fact muslims dare to “show disrespect by compromising the safety and well-being” of non-muslims during this pandemic. Well NO SHIT SHERLOCK! They want you gone, completely, one way or the other, you white devil! But no, please do carry on with your life as usual while only getting slightly annoyed by the next thing muslims will do to intentionally spite their non-muslim “neighbors” (read: suckers who have no idea they are being enslaved).
Nothing out of the ordinary here, folks. Just a once powerful nation slowly and painfully being murdered without an ounce of resistance. Move along.

That’s called moving the goalpost, now it;s not really an issue for you to hold religious services if you turn yourself in afterwards. This is simply because you wish to minimize the acts of non-Muslims when they break safety measures.

PRCS, have you renamed this blog “Stop giving foolish Infidels a pass for THEIR bad behavior Watch”? I know we’d all be flocking to that one…
Certainly, there have been some non-Muslims who have acted like morons during this crisis. No one is trying to weaponize it like so many Muslims, though–and few Infidels are going easy on them as they too often are on Muslims.
You do not have to consider this an issue if you choose not to, of course.
PRCS says
No, I don’t have to.
The infection is the infection is the infection.
Whether it’s caused by a ‘weaponized’ religious use or that of an idiotic Christian pastor.

CogitoErgoSum says
PRCS, never once does de Blasio mention mosques or Muslims …. never once. He mentions services at synagogues and churches but never mosques. If he were praising the religious community you can be sure he would make a point of mentioning Muslims but when it comes to threatening to shut down group worship services he avoids all mention of anything that would touch on preventing Muslims from gathering for prayers.
I don’t like Islam and I’m not so mindless that I can’t tell you don’t like it either but you seem to have a greater dislike for Christianity than Islam. I think you would probably be happier visiting a website called Crusade Watch, if there is one. Oh wait, the Pope hasn’t called for any Crusades lately. Sorry to disappoint you on that. You would be able to bash Christians to your heart’s content on a site like that. But okay, if it makes you happy knock yourself out with more of your postings against Christians here at a site called Jihad Watch and make sure you call the police if you see two or more Christians praying together at church. Oh wait, you don’t go to church. Guess that’s just another example of how mindless I am. Anyway, looking forward to hearing more from you on how stupid I am.
PRCS says
You’re a rather dense individual.
You did notice that he also didn’t day Temples, Wicken dens, voodoo practices, or any of the other roughly 4000 other world religions.
My problem isn’t with Christianity, rather with morons like you, having assumed I should know what Jesus said, felt so emotionally wounded that as an atheist I’ve never read the Bible and hadn’t taken the time to look the passage up–just to make you feel good.
Remember?
CogitoErgoSum says
PRCS, I know he didn’t mention Hindus or Wicans or any other specific religion. No, he didn’t have to do that. He didn’t have to mention Christians or Jews either. He could have just gone with making a generic ban against gatherings of people above a certain number. That should have been clear enough for everyone, including atheists like you who might want to have a few beers and bowl a few frames with his buddies.
As for arresting people for not obeying the group meeting limit, I’m not a supporter of that either. The police could give a warning to people they find congregating in groups but as for arresting them, no, not even Muslims should be arrested for that. Only if a person becomes belligerent with the police and starts spitting on them or in some other way assaulting a police officer should a person be arrested in this current situation of ours.
Anyway, I see true to your form you called me dense. I’ll give you credit for using a variation of stupid though. As for being emotionally hurt, you seem to be projecting your own feelings onto me the same way you are projecting your lack of knowledge onto me. Thank God you are not my neighbor because it would be really hard to come to your aid if I were to see you lying helpless at the side of the road. But you know what, I would anyway because I’m a strong, healthy person in body and spirit and it would be better to die trying to save a life than being a sniveling coward. May you live long …. and free to be whatever it is you are. Now go get your binoculars and keep an eye on the nearest church.
Jaladhi says
There are no “profiles in courage” in the West when it comes to Islam! 🙂
Wellington says
Disagree. For instance, many Republicans in various state legislatures (examples being those of Oklahoma and Tennessee) have put forward bills disallowing the many putrid aspects of Sharia (e.g., death for apostasy) from being implemented in the US. Of course, laws already exist that make criminal many Islamic dictates, including death for apostasy, waging war to spread religion, and polygamy, but the fact that many state legislators have SPECIFICALLY mentioned Sharia as inapplicable DOES demonstrate that there are some profiles in courage among the political class here in the US.
Then there are examples of this too in Europe, Geert Wilders of The Netherlands for instance and Victor Orban of Hungary as another. The problem is not that there are no profiles in courage by politicians where standing up to Islam is concerned but rather that there are too few profiles in courage. Far more are needed.
Jaladhi says
I think there are none among the US leaders as I see it! Or they are so PC that they have no courage to speak truthfully. Orban and Wilders are there in Europe but are Europeans listening to them?
Wellington says
You kinda’ moved the goalposts on me because I addressed your point about there being no profiles in courage and then you went to there being no profiles in courage among US leaders. Hopefully you will see what I mean.
In any case, President Trump in March of 2016 while still a Presidential candidate said, and I quote, “I think Islam hates us.” He has to now keep matters to himself about this (I’m virtually certain he hasn’t changed his mind) because idiotic judges (and it only takes one) will issue an injunction stopping an executive order of Trump’s if any prejudice against Islam even remotely seems to exist.
As for Orban, Wilders, et al. in Europe, I think more and more are listening to such people by the year because Islam can’t help revealing its many nefarious aspects the more it expresses itself. But the worst here are not the damn Muslims but the non-Muslim Lefties in the West who remain in FSM (Full Stupid Mode), though there are still enough non-Muslim, non-Lefties also in this mode to this day (e.g., probably the entire Bush family).
gravenimage says
I agree–Anti-Shari’ah laws in the US are very important.
James Lincoln says
Agree, gravenimage.
Anti-sharia laws should be in place at the federal level – and in all 50 states…
PRCS says
Because the sharia, which defines and controls EVERY aspect of a Muslim’s life–including benign activities/requirements like praying, fasting, toilet etiquette, food and beverage permissibility, etc., establishing broad, anti-Sharia laws isn’t going to happen.
As they are here, in our country–whether citizen or non–they’re expected to follow our man-made laws or suffer a consequence of their failure to do so.
Same as you and me.
Jake says
What happened to “seperation of church and state” — you know, we won’t tell you what to do, and you won’t tell us what to do?
Frank Anderson says
Jake, it may not be what you want to read, But the Constitution provides in the First Amendment the right to assemble peaceably. In an emergency situation, when the assembly is clearly part of spreading a known disease, the government has authority to impose limits, that must be reasonable and non-discriminatory. The idea that muslims are not included makes this order on its face discriminatory. But the order applies otherwise to all gatherings. IF muslims were included, it would probably survive a court challenge.
Please consult a currently licensed attorney practicing in your jurisdiction for any legal advice.
PRCS says
“In an emergency situation, when the assembly is clearly part of spreading a known disease, the government has authority to impose limits, that must be reasonable and non-discriminatory. The idea that muslims are not included makes this order on its face discriminatory…”
Per the Yutube video of his press conference (above), he said “all faiths”, and noted that “a small minority of churches ans synagogues” were not paying attention to the warnings.
Frank Anderson says
PRCS, I think my comment is sound. It is of course my opinion, and subject to what happens after years of litigation, if anyone spends the time and money to fight. The failure to mention mosques could be troublesome for Big Bird’s efforts to avoid a civil rights loss in court.
PRCS says
He didn’t mention Temples, either.
So?
Frank Anderson says
PRCS, in my limited experience in Jewish circles, Reform Jews call synagogues (gatherings) Temples. Big Bird may not know or care about any difference.

PRCS, thank you for the video. I watched the segment you identified. He did say “all”. “The proof of the pudding. . .” will be shown Friday. He is not required to speak an exhaustive list. After all the video is over an hour long: He only had so much time to speak. But if the rule is not enforced equally, there will be a problem.
PRCS says
You’re welcome.
Islam unequivocally deserves accurate criticism, and mockery. And there’s so much material to work with.
Unfortunately, Di-Blasio’s press conference comments have been widely misrepresented around the Interwebs and other info sources.
Those who use the term ‘radical Islam’ also commit the same sin: inaccuracy.
Frank Anderson says
PRCS, we are extremely close to agreement. IF his comments have been incorrectly reported, whether by accident or intent, then a pass is due. Only when we see his actions can an honest decision, which I believe both of us seek, be made. In view of his and other’s pandering to islam in every way imaginable suspicion is justified until proof is obtained. NEVER trust anyone who identifies with a criminal conspiracy that has taught and practiced lying and deception for 1400 years.
PRCS says
“IF his comments have been incorrectly reported”
You already know, from the title of this JW article vs what the video itself shows, that is HAS been incorrectly reported.
Some outlets HAVE done so intentionally..
Our friends and neighbors deserve better.
Frank Anderson says
PRCS, I try to rely very lightly on reports, preferring to make my best guess/conclusions from those dubious reports and what I remember. Big Bird is not someone I admire. I would not trust him as far as I could throw him 30 years ago when I was much stronger. Let us just wait and see how he directs the handling of what is otherwise an entirely sensible public health order, if it is applied to all of the public. Friday will tell a tale?
gravenimage says
Jake, if anyone, religious or secular, is flouting guidelines on safe behavior re the Coronavirus, it is an issue.

Of course not–just despicable.
And how would it be legal to shut these churches and synagogues *permanently*? I agree they should close for the duration of the Coronavirus crises, but threatening to shutter them for good is grotesque.
Frank Anderson says
GI, for a person who has such love for the Constitution as Big Bird has shown all his life, there are arguments he might try to close selected places for defiance of emergency orders, however arbitrary, capricious and discriminatory, that might hold up under the right judges for a long time. It often takes years to reach the Supreme Court, which rejects without hearing 98 percent of the appeals requested. Look back in history at the success tyrants have had when they controlled the courts.

I doubt this would stand much legal scrutiny, but even de Blasio threatening it is pretty ugly. This does not mean I am condoning stupid and harmful behavior, of course.

All he needed to make this complete would be the cockroach standing near, getting one of his many hugs.
Why is it that the pols like him can get together with so many of their media amours and spread whatever they may be carrying, and no one says, “If you don’t stop meeting with your local…and national, international…press, we’re gonna’s see that you leave office, permanently”?
They are no less carriers and spreaders than are people who want to attend church or a synagogue, to pray and attempt to keep everyone calm. It may be unwise to continue to meet, esp entire congregations, but it is understandable why people wish to.
He cannot *legally* close churches and synagogues “permanently,” unless during this time of so many making so many new laws…putting entire cities under virtual house arrest…arresting people from one state going into nearby states…impounding truck loads of goods because the truckers have no place to park with the truck stops closed…the Constitution is actually shredded and nothing is ever the same with the U.S. again.
He is a mini-tyrant. He may have uttered “all faiths”…he didn’t mention the meeting place of more than two…but clearly he doesn’t want to make the cockroach and her friends angry with him. After all, moslims are not the peaceable people they claim to be and have been known to riot when opposed…yes, they have been known to riot and threaten to do more than riot…and ordering them **again** to close wouldn’t be any guarantee that they would obey the new law.
They are not obeying these orders about not gathering in any country where they have been told not to. So, it would be a waste of his breath…and he might not get any more cockroach hugs…if he had included the barracks in NYC in his threats of closure, fines and arrests.
