“American generosity during the Coronavirus crisis might be the best way of persuading Iran to release American and other foreign detainees,” the New York Times editorial board argues.
Generosity?
Loading billions in foreign currency and literally flying it into Iran didn’t do it? $150 billion in sanctions relief wasn’t generous enough to free Bob Levinson?
American detainees, nice of the Times not to use the vulgar term “hostage”, keep being taken by the Islamic Republic precisely because we, either our government or some part of our society, pay for their ransom in one way or another.
The Times would like us to believe that the same theocrats who used children as human mine detectors, and who raped female protesters in prison so that they wouldn’t go to heaven after being executed, will respond to our generosity and niceness.
This obscene malignant fake alturism right out of the Ben Rhodes echo chamber would be bad enough if it weren’t coming at a time when Bob Levinson’s family is mourning his death.
Phil Copson says
One of the USA’s first and most defining foreign policy initiatives after gaining it’s independence, was to use military force against the Barbary Corsairs precisely to deter the profitable business of hostage-taking and slave-trading.
Paying ransom-money must surely be the anti-thesis of what it means to be American ?
Ray Jarman says
You could have added that the NYT is the anti-thesis of a real “news” paper.

Spot on, Phil.
Daniel Triplett says
That’s right Phil.
We were assaulted and subjugated by the Ummah for the first 39 years of our country’s existence, 1776 – 1815.
John Q. Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison had much to say about it and were far more wise about Islam than any president since has been.
From 1776, the Barbary Pirates (Muslims) pirated our commercial shipping, seizing our vessels, looting the cargo, kidnapping and demanding ransom for the crews, or enslaving or murdering them altogether. The US Government for the first 25 years paid annual “Tribute” money to the Ummah that equaled 20% of our National budget.
Up to that point, America had no Navy. That’s why Jefferson started our Navy – to protect US commercial shipping against the Ummah. Americans were tired of getting ripped off with the Tribute money. For the same amount we were spending in Jizya, we could build and maintain a Navy, which is what we did.
Then came a series of wars we fought against the Ummah from 1801 – 1815. But even today, American shipping is harassed by Muslim pirates.

“American generosity during the Coronavirus crisis might be the best way of persuading Iran to release American and other foreign detainees..” – NYT editorial board.
Spoken by true cowards, are these words that a militant Regime loves to hear. Stunningly, the NYT editorial board doesn’t believe their own story line that Iran’s Regime will absolutely not accept help from the US. Are they admitting to propaganda?
One can already envision Khamenei laughing and saying, “See, all we need to do is wait out the American cowards with false promises until we have the bomb. They won’t do anything. They will act out their fantasies on TV’s Seal Team but never come for the hostages. They left the first hostages for 444 days until that nasty Reagan came to power and would have attacked if we didn’t release them.”
mortimer says
Agree with Westman that they are cowards, but I think they are naïve POLLYANNAS principally.
They naively expect Islam to be benevolent towards the dirty kufaar. It is more likely that the mullahs will offer more defiance to the US.
gravenimage says
Besides, The US has already offered Iran help with the Coronavirus for purely humanitarian reasons, and was rebuffed by the Mullahs, who would rather have their people die:
“Iran leader refuses US help; cites coronavirus conspiracy theory”

Lilith Wept says
Why did we offer Iran help when there are Americans that need help and we are experiencing shortages of necessary medical supplies?!?!?
gravenimage says
Well, that’s another good question.
mortimer says
There is little chance that the mullahs will change their ways. They fib, they lie, they tell whoppers. They are past masters of taqiyya. Dealing with the mullahs is like Charlie Brown dealing with Lucy holding the football.

I was transitioning from Junior to High School when the Iranian revolution and US Embassy hostage crisis happened. I like others was totally transfixed by it. In all of it’s excitement and horror.
I remember when the hostages were sent back eventually to America, we (my friends at High School) just could not understand why America did not just destroy Irans infrastructure with a a massive carpet bombing campaign.
If you had I think many now would think twice or even thrice before engaging in this behaviour.
revereridesagain says
In retrospect I can’t understand that either.
mortimer says
Carter was and is a naïve Pollyanna. The hostage crisis ENDED ONE DAY before Ronald Reagan took office as president.
Westman says
Carter, a strong believer in Christian principles, was ignorant of the incivility of Islam toward unbelievers. He didn’t understand that Islam is a demerit-based system that uses power and punishment in place of opportunity to incentivize the citizens.
If the US had removed the Iranian Regime in 1979, Iran would be very different and not pursuing the destruction of Israel nor pursuing a nuclear bomb. Iran’s Mullahs killed its future brain trust in the 8-years war and drove its gifted, less believing, citizens to other nations.
James Lincoln says
Excellent analysis, Westman.
Pres. Carter, although highly intelligent and a rather “nice” fellow, was a poor leader and lacked a fundamental understanding of islam.
Rueben_Singh says
In fairness, I think the entire western world was lacking in an understanding of islam. The internet and all the events before and after has changed that.
The “agreement” if one can call it that, for the freeing of the hostages contained a clause I believe that there would be no military retaliation.
As the agreement was made under duress, I don’t think that should have been abided by.
mortimer says
I like what Westman says. In other words, Islam is a BAD MANAGEMENT system. A bad manager can only create dysfunction. He cannot create a healthy, positive environment for success. Islam creates a zero-sum, fixed-pie environment.

The treasonous NYT is a disgrace on too many levels to comprehend! Of course, Obama giving Iran pallets of US cash and bowing down to them, certainly sent a horrible message!
What was Obama’s payoff for this?
Maybe it’s how he can afford a $20 million dollar mansion on Martha’s Vineyard! The liberal democrats are a completely treasonous disgraceful party !
God bless and save America!! ??????

The New York Times seems to be seriously confused as to how the Muslim Mind works. They should buy a copy of Robert Spencer’s Book Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Qur’an to set themselves right.

What an appalling rag the “Newspaper of Record” is.
Norman Gardner says
Perhaps the NYT is getting some advertising money siphoned to it from Islamic sources?
I can`t believe the crap that is disseminating from the editorial board. They have op eds from known bigots and Islamic anti American and anti semitic individuals spewing their lies.

The NYT has long had a fondness for totalitarians, dating all the way back to Stalin.

Unfortunately these hate filled islamic terrorist can never be trusted or believed. The muslim islamic mind thinks the world is all about them and that everyone else is there for their pleasure or use. Big bombs are the answer for cleaning up the islamic world.
