Is it at all possible that Qur’anic teachings calling for killing non-Muslims (2:190, 4:89, cf. 9:5), striking their necks (47:4) and being ruthless toward them (48:29) create a culture of violence, one in which violence is widely seen as a viable solution to problems to an extent that it is not so seen in other cultural contexts? Or is even asking that question “Islamophobic”? Many would say it is.
“Younis Khan held a knife to my throat when I offered him batting advice: Flower,” Cricket Pakistan, July 2, 2020:
Pakistan’s former batting coach Grant Flower, while talking on the Following on Cricket Podcast, revealed that legendary batsman Younis Khan once held a knife to his throat when he offered him batting advice.
The 49-year-old claimed that Younis, who is currently the Men in Green’s batting coach, was tough to master despite being the highest scorer in the history of Pakistan Test cricket.
“Younis Khan… quite tough to master. Obviously, a brilliant career. I remember one incident in Brisbane, during the Test, at breakfast I tried to give him a bit of batting advice, not that my career was anywhere near his regarding stats, as he is the highest scorer in Pakistan Test cricket,” said Flower.
“But he didn’t take kindly to my advice and brought a knife to my throat, with Mickey Arthur sitting alongside, who had to intervene. Yeah, it’s been interesting. But that’s part of coaching. It makes it a hell of a journey, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I’m very fortunate to be in the position I am,” he added….

Ah, I should have made a Cricket Jihad series. This type of story is common in Pakistan cricket; i’ve followed the team for a long time. One of my favourite players to watch, Ahmed Shehzad, is a pretty volatile character as well.

What a disgusting incident that is. Holding a knife to the coach’s throat. Yeah, that’s a perfectly reasonable reaction to a bit of criticism. What a disgrace. Totally uncivilised behaviour, but then I thought, well, Grant Flower, who I think is South African, though not sure, made the decision to coach the Muslim Pakistanis, so I guess he put himself in harm’s way by deciding to coach that team. I have felt for ages that Pakistan, with its atrocious human rights record, (such as its treatment of Asia Bibi and other non-Muslims) should be banned from international cricket. I was trying to think of other behaviour of a violent nature between a player and a coach in sport and I remembered that a few years back, here in Australia, a coach of a Rugby League team, Jason Taylor, was knocked out by one of his players at some end of season booze up, which I thought was an appalling incident. Holding a knife to a coach’s throat is every bit as bad, maybe worse,(although actually knocking someone out could have had disastrous, even fatal results) and the knife garbage certainly is very Islamic (I suppose ever since those passages in the Koran).
gravenimage says
In a sane society he would have been fired from the team and prosecuted for doing this. Of course, Pakistan is not a sane society.

Grant Flower, alongside his better known brother Andy, were from Zimbabwe, not South Africa. Andy was probably Zimbabwe’s best ever player, and one of the world’s leading batsmen of his era. Grant was a decent player himself, though not of the same standard. They were driven out of Zimbabwe by Mugabe. Both of them are now respected coaches.
Keith O says
Cricket used to be classed as a “gentleman’s game”.
We have had our share of rough characters in our team (Australia), but holding a blade to someones throat?
Lucky he didn’t try it with someone like Merv Hughes.(do a search on him).

Pakistan: Former cricket coach says Muslim cricketer “brought a knife to my throat” when he offered batting advice
…………….
What kind of madness is this? Could you imagine a Briton offering batting advice while threatening to cut the man’s throat? What about an American doing the same while offering batting advice in baseball? Of course not.
mortimer says
Let’s do the ‘SHOE-ON-THE-OTHER-FOOT’ test, GI.
What would the result have been if a CHRISTIAN BATTER had threatened a Muslim coach by placing a knife on his throat?
This is a double standard. No one should get away with a death threat, not even a top-scoring athlete.
gravenimage says
Good points, Mortimer. And had this been a Christian he probably would have been beaten to death by the Muslim players.
Manuele Lui says
I bet you that if Grant Flower brought this up earlier, he’ll be called all sort of names. AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE MUSLIM LOVING LEFT LEANING MEDIA ARE REALLY CAPABLE OF. I SAY THAT THEY ARE FULL OF BEETLE DUNG.
tim gallagher says
gravenimage, I was stunned by this report. This cricketer, or any other sportsman from any other sport, holding a knife to the coach’s throat is so far beyond any behaviour that I would ever expect to occur between an athlete and a coach, it is so atrocious that I am stunned by it. It is lunatic behaviour. I mean sport is professional and there’s big money involved in it and all that, but it is still only sport. What a dangerous person this Pakistani player must be to do such a thing. Of course, I have thought for ages that Pakistan, an appalling country which stomps on all non-Muslims’ rights who are unfortunate to live there, should have been thrown out of international cricket years ago. But I am stunned by this report.
Giacomo Latta says
Can you imagine such a thing in baseball given that it closely resembles cricket? Soon an imagination will not be required.
tim gallagher says
Giacomo, I can’t imagine it happening in any sport which Muslims from Pakistan or some such Muslim country do not play. If you end up with Pakistani Muslim fanatics playing baseball one day then maybe it could happen. Hopefully that never happens. It seems to me to be very much a Muslim type of violent outburst. As I said up above, this man has to be a very dangerous person to behave in such an over the top manner.
gravenimage says
So true, Tim and Giacomo.
Usually if a baseball player or other athlete just swears at a coach they are ejected from the game and fined. I can’t understand why any civilized Infidel would want to play or coach in Dar-al-Islam.
tim gallagher says
That’s the issue for me also, gravenimage, why non-Muslims would go and coach cricket in Pakistan. I think Pakistan should be banned anyway, so I’d never do it. I guess it is a well paid job, so people like Grant Flower go and coach there. People that take such jobs are probably fairly politically correct and won’t say that there is a problem with islam or Pakistan. I’m pretty sure an Australian former international cricketer named Geoff Lawson also coached the Pakistani team for a while. I haven’t heard that he had any trouble, or maybe he wouldn’t say so even if he did. He seems an OK person when I’ve heard him talk. I guess the money was good. I know I wouldn’t go near Pakistan (or any Muslim country) for all the money in the world (on principle).I have to buy their petrol for my car, but don’t want to give them any more of my money.
gravenimage says
Agree, Tim.
Jerome B Bigge says
Islam is ideologically a “master religion” superior to all others. One whose followers see nothing “wrong” in practicing violence against non-Muslims. Just as those of the KKK believed that both threatening and practicing violences against Blacks was right and proper. Or the treatment of Jews throughout history with the Nazis’ “final solution” simply bringing things to a head. So there are historic parallels Today those who used to live under fear of what “could happen” no longer have this fear and are “testing” what they can now “get away with” that they couldn’t before. Do you think the rioters and such would have done the same back in 1930? The America of that time was far different than the America of 2020. 1930 America believed in “white power” and was willing to back it up with armed force if necessary. Take the US, Russia, China of 2020. Give these countries the leadership of 1930 while retaining today’s weapons… What do you think the response would be from the Islamic countries? After their capital cities were radioactive ruins. The release of supertanker loads of VX. Perhaps biological weapons?
Today such would be “unthinkable”. We are too “civilized” to do such things. At least the US is, although I suspect China and Russia would see things differently than we of today do… I suspect that Europe has lost its will to resist, one of the aspects of multicultural societies.
gravenimage says
The idea that preventing violent riots is about “white power” is mistaken.
But you are right that many nations today are too “politically correct” to protect their citizens lives and property, or to maintain public order.

And a former captain of the Pakistani Cricket Team is now Pakistan’s Prime Minister. Pakistani cricketing thuggery has now gone national. No wonder Osama Bin Laden managed to hide there, in plain sight, while everyone claimed to be searching for him.

Yep.

Pakistan is clandestinely helping Islamic terrorists who target other Commonwealth countries. Pakistan is a rogue state.

Yes–not even all that clandestine at this point.

So … Team Pakistan’s former batting coach Grant Flower was THREATENED WITH BEHEADING by a Muslim cricketer when Mr. Flower DID HIS JOB of offering BATTING COACHING ???
The Muslim batter, Younis Khan, should have been charged and released from his contract.

Qur’an tells that all other religions are invalid. Maybe Muhammad Saheb wanted to tell that Muslims to do not embrace any other religion. But all other religions are at a great risk. Pl try to do something concrete.

Yes, that’s right, good old English cricket tradition straight from the playing fields of Eton, don’t you know! (*I say, Carruthers, you bounder, how dare you tell me how to play a silly-mid-on, I’ll have your head for that!”). Rumour has it that if you go round the back of the pavilion you’ll find all the decapitated corpses of former cricket coaches. Well, you’ve got to blame it on the British, these vuile rumours are all obviously racist islamophobia – peaceful muslims could never think up this sort of thing off their own bat (ouch!).
