‘The Qur’anic verses commanding self-defence have been cherry-picked by anti-Muslim writers and by small cells of extremists to depict the Prophet and the community as militant. This is far from accurate’. This excerpt is from what I believe is the most disgraceful video I have ever seen on Islam: Muhammad: A Prophet of War? by University of Michigan History professor Juan Cole, made for the Emir-Stein Center.
I will first respond to all of Professor Cole’s scriptural evidences supposedly showing that Islam is peaceful. Cole first asserts that in the face of persecution, the Qur’an ‘advises’ Muhammad in Surah 73:10: ‘And be patient about what they say, and emigrate from them in a beautiful emigration.’ Then he jumps suddenly to Surah 41:34; ‘Good and evil are not equal. Repel the latter with the greater good’.
Cole is trying to portray the Qur’an’s message as one of peace by invoking passages that are not relevant to the topic. The equivocation of peace and patience is baffling. The claim is so vague that it is hard to rebuke. Does having patience with someone invalidate verses for appropriate punishment when they wage war against Allah?
When words such as ‘good’, ‘righteousness’ et al are used in the Qur’an, we must remember not to apply our standards of what they mean, but rather Allah’s standard. In Islam, Allah always defines what is good. This means that any appeal to good could be a call to violence, if Allah has deemed violent action to be good. In regard to Surah 41:34, Sam Shamoun writes: ‘Muhammad couldn’t refrain himself from inflicting torture on individuals who had attacked his shepherds and took off with his herd. What makes this all the more ironic is that these men did to Muhammad the very same thing that he and his followers had already done to the caravans of others. Muhammad’s torture of the Uraynians failed to do the more righteous thing, to follow the better way, as prescribed in passages such as 41:34.’ We even read in Sahih al-Bukhari 50, Sahih al-Bukhari 111, Sunan Abu Dawud 4491 and Sunan Abu Dawud 4515 that a Muslim should not be put to death in equivalent punishment for the death of an infidel. This is a principle also held by Ibn Kathir and other commentators. This verse’s apparent sentiment does not hold up to scrutiny; these irrelevant Meccan verses do not make the case Cole claims they make.
Cole cites other, similar Meccan verses, including Surah 25:63, ‘And the servants of the merciful are those who walk on the earth gently, and, when the fool addressed them, they say, “Peace”‘. This passage does not command peace; rather, it expresses the idea that when believers encounter fools, they should address them with peace. If the fool were to espouse polytheism or unbelief, Muslims must act in accordance with Qur’an verses such as 9:29, 9:5 and 9:123. Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir comments on Surah nine and earlier verses by saying; ‘All people of the world should be called to Islam. If any one of them refuses to do so or pay the Jizyah, they should be fought till they are killed’. Surah nine was revealed a year after Muhammad had conquered Mecca, throwing Cole’s self-defence narrative out the window. It is also ironic that Cole would claim killing is permissible in defensive war, yet would stick to the idea that evil should be repelled with the greater good. Notice, however, that even when Muhammad was forced to be submissive to others, he never preached to love your enemies.
The key fact here is that all three of the verses above are Meccan verses. According to the Islamic account of Muhammad’s career, at that time he did not have the capacity to command the explicit elimination of unbelievers. After that period come teachings that war should be purely defensive, but in Islamic theology these are understood to have been abrogated, as Ibn Kathir explains.
Cole then goes on to present some Medinan verses, and the truth seeps out. In Qur’an 8:38, ‘Say to those who became infidels, if they cease, what is passed will be forgiven them’, note the qualifier of the ceasing of their rebellion against Allah. Cole’s next verse, Surah 8:61, says the following; ‘And if they lean toward peace (truce), so lean toward it’, which once again contains that interesting qualifier. We might say Cole has ‘cherry-picked’ a little himself here. The context for this verse is that it is speaking about a truce. Cole’s final verses to support his claim that Islam teaches peace were Qur’an 48:26, 48:24 and 5:16. While both the verses he cited from the chapter of the Conquest (Surah 48) were legitimately narrated, they do not show a command for peace. He concludes by claiming that Surah 5:16, one of the last passages to be revealed to Muhammad, shows peace from Allah. Surah 5:16 is as follows; ‘Allah will guide with it the one who will follow his pleasure to the ways of peace, and he will bring them out of the darkness to the light by his permission. And he will guide them to a straight way’. This verse is clearly not a command for peace; it is Allah guiding ‘one who will follow his pleasure’ to the straight way, which, if based on the Qur’an, is inherently violent.
Cole’s straw man at the beginning, namely that observations that Islam teaches warfare are ‘anti-Muslim’, is in full flight by the time he cites Surah 2:190: And engage in war for the sake of Allah against those who engage in war against you. God does not love aggressors’. Professor Cole’s best example of Allah commanding peace is ‘cherry picked’ from a set of verses explicitly commanding war when disbelievers make war against them.
But how exactly can a disbeliever make war against Muslims? One example is explained in Surah 5:33; ‘Surely the reward of those who war against Allah and his messenger and go about to vandalize on the earth is only that they will be killed or crucified or have their hands and legs cut off on opposite sides or they will be banished from the earth’. We see another specific punishment given in Surah 8:12-13: ‘When your lord revealed to the angels: “I am with you, so make firm those who believed. I will cast a terror into the hearts of those who became infidels. So strike above their necks, and strike off every finger from them.” This is because they have opposed Allah and his messenger, and whoever opposes Allah and his messenger, so surely Allah is severe in the punishment’. It is very clear that Allah sees opposition to him as a severely punishable action. The Qur’an commands killing in over 70 verses,; all for specific reasons and usually with specific punishments.
Some more verses in the Qur’an commanding Muslims to kill include Surah 2:193, 2:216 and 9:73. In Surah 2:193, just a few verses after one of Cole’s examples of the Qur’an teaching peace, comes the following; ‘And engage in war with them until there be no sedition and the religion be to Allah. So if they desist, so there will be no transgression except on the unjust.’ The only time the slaughter of those unbelievers in such a war is to stop is when they surrender, the very meaning of ‘Islam’. In his notes on his translation of the Qur’an (The Generous Qur’an, which is the only correct title translation), Usama Dakdok writes before these verses that they teach the following; ‘Never stop waging war until all men worship Allah. Revenge is lawful’. Dakdok then compares it to the Christian covenant: ‘This contradicts Matthew 5:38-39, 44; Romans 12:19-21; and I Peter 2:21-23.’
In Surah 2:216, further harming the self-defence narrative, Allah explains that ‘War is decreed to you, and it is hated by you. And perhaps you may hate something, and it is good for you; and perhaps you love something, and it is evil for you. And Allah knows, and you do not know’. As we see, war is decreed by Allah himself. Clearly sometimes Muhammad’s men were hesitant or cautious, but fighting for the sake of Allah is paramount. We read in Surah 9:73: ‘O you prophet, perform jihad against the infidels and the hypocrites, and be harsh with them. And their abode will be hell, and evil is the final place.’ Once again, the self-defence narrative is eliminated as jihad against the infidels and hypocrites is mandated for the perfect man, Muhammad. As we know, jihad in Islamic theology is warfare against and subjugation of unbelievers under the hegemony of Islamic law. In the reliable Islamic sources, there is only one application, and of course in this scenario, performing against the infidels and hypocrites, it is crystal clear.
My challenge to Professor Juan Cole, on his premise that Islam is peaceful, is for him to cite a single verse in the Qur’an (the direct, perfect, unchangeable, eternal, perfectly preserved word of Allah) that preaches love for an unbeliever. Knowing that all the verses he previously presented fall flat in the light of clear, contextual commands to kill in many varying scenarios, how truly can he claim that the sentiments of Islam are peaceful and that Muhammad was a Prophet of Peace?
As Coptic Orthodox priest Zakaria Botros, called by some ‘Islam’s public enemy number one’, with a $60 million Al Qaeda bounty on his head, says of the importance of speaking the truth about Islam: ‘We should not flatter people at the expense of truth’.

Statistics refute Dr. Juan Cole and prove him wrong.
-51% of the Islamic Trilogy* is political.
-hadiths 37% devoted to the kafir problem=political
-Koran 64% devoted to the kafir problem=political
-Sira 81% devoted to the kafir problem=political
-51% of all words in foundational Islam is devoted to the kafir problem
– 548,190 words in Trilogy are political
THE FINAL SOLUTION TO THE ‘KAFIR PROBLEM’ IS JIHAD … all actions taken to remove the human rights and civil liberties of WOMEN and KAFIRS.
* the Islamic Trilogy is composed of the Koran, Sira and hadiths.

Spot on, Mortimer. I was thinking of that statistic that Islam has killed around 270 million people so far, and 80 million Indians. That’s a hell of lot of slaughtering people done by Islam, which is, apparently, according to this fool, basically peaceful. It’s a lot of evidence to the contrary. I guess killing all those people was all just done in self-defence. What a load of bullshit by this dangerous clown.

Yep.
Jerome B Bigge says
More deaths than the total number of deaths from all wars during the entire 20th Century. 350 million deaths: More deaths than the total population of the USA, Canada put together. No one else in the entire history of the world has caused so many deaths from his teachings. Of course it’s taken 13 Centuries to accomplish it.
tim gallagher says
It’s a horrendous record that islam has, Jerome, that’s for sure. And it’s still going strong, murdering endless non-Muslims as recent events in Nigeria in particular demonstrate. And still there are so many of these fools who try to tell us that islam is basically peaceful.
mortimer says
Juan Cole is proved wrong by the study of 10 religious texts by Dr. Tina Magaard.
Mohammed was undoubtedly a WARLORD.
Danish researcher Tina Magaard, Ph.D. concluded that Islam is the most warlike religion. After three years analyzing the original texts of ten different religions, Tina Magaard concluded that the Islamic texts stand out by encouraging terror and fighting “to a far larger degree than the original texts of other religions. The texts in Islam distinguish themselves from the texts of other religions by encouraging violence and aggression against people with other religious beliefs to a larger degree.”
“What is striking is not in itself that one can find murderous passages in the Islamic texts, as such passages can also be found in other religions. But it is striking how much space these passages take up in the Islamic texts, and how much they focus on an us-and-them logic in which infidels and apostates are characterized as dirty, rotten, criminal, hypocritical and dangerous. It is also striking how much these texts demand that the reader fight the infidels, both with words and with the sword. In many passages, Muhammad plays a central role as one who encourages the use of violence, whether it comes to stonings, beheadings, acts of war or execution of critics and poets.”
Eva says
It took her THAT long???
All she had to do was stick her head out of her own door to see that islam THE ultra violent supremacist death cult, interested only rape, slaughter and dominion.
But I suppose we should be thankful that at least one academic, somewhere, has worked out the truth.
Now let’s watch the rest of them scramble to take her and her findings down.

Additional notes on Meccan and Medinan verses and abrogation:
The authority of verses in direct contradiction (which is theologically impossible) are decided by which came later, the doctrine of abrogation, and Meccan verses were the earlier. When Muhammad was a Meccan preacher and his followers were very few, he had no capacity to command the outright slaughter of his enemies, so at worst it was restricted to fighting some defensive battles, although this still contradicts teaching peace.
Once Islam was in full authority, we see Medinan verses, which are much more aggressive but more importantly are the legitimate commands when this subject is in question. While the Qur’an at no single point preaches love to an unbeliever, Medinan verses preach conversion (to them reversion) or slaughter.
While I once thought abrogation was surely very complicated due to the number of abrogated verses, there aren’t many categories of abrogated verses and they are easy to follow in the work of the greatest commentators. I believe some examples are given from Ibn Kathir in the link I add later. Surah 9, in particular 9:5 in regard to abrogation, is instrumental in defining the Islamic doctrine regarding unbelievers.
To see another explanation about Meccan and Medinan verses, see one of many talks about Usama Dakdok, this included: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0qIipiXDMs.
mortimer says
Abrogation refutes Dr. Cole. A Muslim scholar said that the single ‘Verse of the Sword’ (K.9.5) on its own abrogates over 100 ‘peaceful’ verses of the Koran.
Thus, after abrogating the peaceful verses, Islam must give PRIORITY to the warlike verses.
Isaac Marshall says
Spot on, again.
mortimer says
Cole makes up his own version of events by sweeping aside all the canonical commentaries of Islam and presenting his hypotheses and guesses as fact. He does this by using the prestige of his titles. He cannot change what the Sira, hadiths and 164 jihad verses in the Koran actually say.
We cannot be certain about the events surrounding the formulation of Islam by the caliph, because any early records about Mohammed were destroyed by them. What we have of Mohammed’s biography was recorded between 200 to 300 years after his purported death.
The trouble I have with Cole is that he states his guesses as facts.
gravenimage says
Thank you, Isaac. Spot on about abrogation and the Meccan vs Medinan Suras. The Qur’an is *even more violent* once one understands this.
J Morgan says
I was raised in a politically liberal family, but I never liked Juan Cole. He is one of the leading liberal “scholars” and I could never agree with him. Once again, he is on the wrong side of history. It’s criminal that he is a respected professor that our children learn from.
Isaac Marshall says
I wrote this shortly after I first saw him in the aforementioned video. I have never come across someone quite like him; ‘Christians’, I think he proclaims to be one, should never be deliberately guiding people to something they know is false and in the manner Cole does it, it was almost enraging.
mortimer says
Cole’s current religious beliefs are unknown, but I think he dislikes Jews and Christians. Cole became a member of the Bahá’í Faith in 1972 as an undergraduate at Northwestern. Cole converted to the Bahá’í Faith in 1972, but later resigned in 1996 after conflicts with members of the Bahá’í administration.
In 2018, Andrew Harrod (PhD, JD) wrote the following: ‘Juan Cole invents a Peaceful Quran’
https://www.meforum.org/7646/juan-cole-invents-a-peaceful-quran
Harrod writes: “his elaborated revisionist history was unconvincing.”
mortimer says
Cole married Shahin Malik in Lahore in 1982. The couple has a son, Arman, born in 1987.
If Cole married a Muslim woman, it means that he privately converted to Islam.
Isaac Marshall says
That was my original guess as to his motivation when I read his personal segment on Wikipedia.
gravenimage says
Thanks again for that background, Mortimer.
Isaac Marshall says
Oh, seems i’ve made a mistake there. He is not a Christian. He is part of the Baha’i faith; where all religions are equally essential. I wish i’d seen this before so I could have discussed objective truth. His motivations make complete sense now.
mortimer says
I could not find a reference to Cole converting to Islam, but a kafir cannot marry a Muslim woman. ‘Shahin Malik’ (his wife) seems to have a Muslim name.
If Juan Cole converted to Islam, he keeps it a perfect secret. That may be why he is able to get in and out of Muslim countries and speaks there. He says things they want to hear and doesn’t cross any lines.
Juan R.I. Cole once told CA: “My belief in the oneness of mankind and the underlying unity of the great world religions impels me to make my small contribution to East-West understanding through writing history. The practice of history is always an act of human self-comprehension, even if it is the history of another culture.”
He talks like a Bahai’i.
Isaac Marshall says
When I read about Bahai’i it all made sense but the leaving in 1996 that you showed me threw a spanner into the works. I’d surmise that he has worldview x, which is apologetical for Islam while fitting in to his ideas. Bahai’i then seems to work while he marries a Muslim woman and has a son, but when he leaves in 1996, while sticking to his worldview exactly, he accepts Islam.
gravenimage says
The Baha’i faith is non-violent, but it also whitewashes the vicious “Prophet” of Islam.
And according to Wikipedia–yes, I know, not always a completely reliable source–“he later became uninterested in organized religion”. Whether this means he is “spiritual” in some vague sense or is an Atheist or Agnostic is unclear.

Isaac Marshall’s challenge for Juan Cole to cite a Koranic verse that preaches love towards the disbeliever … cannot be met by Juan Cole. There is none.
There are over 400 references in the Koran to hate, over 300 references in the Koran to Allah and FEAR, but there are only 49 references to love. Of these love references, 39 are negative such as the 14 negative references to love of money, power, other gods and status.
Three verses command humanity to love Allah and only 2 verses are about how Allah loves a believer. There are 25 verses about how Allah does NOT love kafirs (disbelievers).
This leaves 5 verses about love. Of these 5 verses, 3 are about loving kin or a Muslim brother. One verse commands a Muslim to give money for the love of Allah. This leaves only one quasi-universal verse about love: give what you love to zakat-charity and even this is contaminated by dualism since Muslim zakat-charity only goes to other Muslims. There are OVER 400 teachings of HATE directed against all disbelievers: Jews, Christians, Idolaters and Kafirs.
So much for love. HATE and FEAR are what Allah demands in the Koran.
Isaac Marshall says
Perfect; even the common deceptive examples like 5:32 and 2:256, ignoring the dishonesty that has to be used to cite them, do not preach love. I would be extremely interested to see what Cole would bring with this question.
mortimer says
Cole is promoting a revisionist view of Mohammed, but he is unfortunately not communicating that clearly.
Cole’s peaceful Mohammed (from the early verses of the Koran) may actually have existed. I concur with this theory myself and believe that later generations may have REVAMPED Mohammed into a warlord. Another scholar who believes this revisionist theory is Prof. Sven Kalisch. He discovered evidence that a ‘different’ and probably Gnostic Mohammed existed behind the texts.
In 2010 Kalisch renounced Islam. His department was then renamed the department for “the intellectual history of the middle east in the post-antiquity period”.
I believe that the original desert prophet was a Gnostic heretic who preached an Arabian version of Gnosticism combined with Arabian folk religion and ‘Abrahamism’ a local, semi-pagan, Jewish off-shoot. The original Gnostic preacher was rewritten by Hajjaj as a warlord under the order of Abd al Malik.
This original prophet may not have been as violent as Mohammed in the Sira, but he was no doubt violent to a degree.
If that is what Juan Cole means, he is not a very good communicator.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You have not just refuted Cole’s argument, you have demolished it.
In my opinion, arguing that Islam is not bellicose is like arguing that water is not wet.
mortimer says
Thanks. Cole appears to be whitewashing Islam. I can only guess why, but none of the explanations would be flattering to him. He is not following good scholarship when he presents his personal comments on the Koran as ‘fact’. Where are the historical evidences and references that confirm his surmisals?
Cole hangs his hat on his titles.
Isaac Marshall says
‘Cole hangs his hat on his titles’. Very accurate, and for a History professor to present historical opinions and theology like fact is exactly showing of that point. The Emir Stein audience suck up what these people tells them. I have wrote about Craig Considine and Bob Roberts on that channel too so hopefully those end up on Jihad Watch too; the Emir Stein Centre is easily the worst Dawah channel i’ve ever seen, ironically. This video by Cole was the worst though.

I said I wished them to read JW every day, because, if they read this depressing real news (about jihad) every day, they will eventually become depressed by what other Muslims are doing, they will look at the primary texts that command the violence, and then, at long last, they will lose their faith in the Koran … a book that promotes hatred and violence. These depressed Muslims will then conclude that the Koran is of human origin and abandon it with confidence. That is exactly what you did. Be aware, though, that in Western countries most seminarians and young priests are already looking toward and beginning a restoration more in keeping with the vision of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. In addition to the New Testament, especially the Gospels, I would encourage you to read spiritual classics to fill the hunger in your soul. These may include The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis, The Way of a Pilgrim, the Phiokalia (or you can begin with a more accessible introduction to the Desert Fathers with Henri Nouwen’s The Way of the Heart), St. Francis de Sales’ Introduction to the Devout Life, Thomas Merton’s Ascent to Truth, or GK Chesterton’s biographies of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Thomas Aquinas (“The Dumb Ox”) just to name a few.
CogitoErgoSum says
As I’ve mentioned before, put the surahs in chronological order, find out how abrogation works and then read Surah 9 (the second to last surah to come from Muhammad). It begins by proclaiming that Allah is now free of obligation to all treaties without an expiration date that were made with the Infidels by Allah and Muhammad. ALL of those ongoing treaties are now instantly ended and those which DO have a specific expiration date are NOT be renewed upon expiration. Then later on in verse 9:29 Muslims are commanded to fight until all the world has submitted to Islam. Where there has once been peace between Muslims and Infidels there is now to be unending fighting (or whatever else it may take) to make Islam the only religion that dominates mankind. There is nothing which Muhammad attributed to Allah that came later and which abrogates a single word of Surah 9 – Allah’s final COMMANDS to those who are Muslims. The final WORDS of Allah in Suhah 110 speak only of the ultimate triumph of Islam when all Muslims are to sing hymns of praise to Allah and to seek the forgiveness of Allah for Allah is ever ready to show mercy (if you submit to the will of Allah). Thus, per the Koran there is to be no peace and only fighting between Muslims and Infidels until Islam is completely victorious. (Muslims believe the Koran is eternal and no word contained therein can be changed by man.)
Isaac Marshall says
Thanks for adding this. We must remember Surah 9 is the last revealed, when Muhammad and Islam had conquered and had power, and what is in it.

Which would be a better world? One ruled by the followers of Karl Marx or one ruled by the followers of Mohammed? Which world would be technologically superior? Which world would oppress women the least? Which of these two would you prefer to live in? Without “oil” would the Muslim world as it exists today exist? Or would it be a technologically backward place back like it was several centuries ago?
Assume Islam did conquer Europe. Most likely the technological development would be considerably less. Would the Muslims ever manage to cross the Atlantic? As it is, what technological development there was came about mainly through the efforts of “converts” (many were Jewish). How many Islamic Nobel winners have there been? I understand that “Arabic numbers” actually came from India? Is this true?
gravenimage says
I see that Jerome B Bigge is demanding that we choose between hideous totalitarian creeds–I wonder why he didn’t throw Fascism in for good measure?
I suppose it has not occurred to him that we might actually live in freedom, and that most of us here oppose Islam because it crushes freedom and democracy?
And yes–“Arabic” numerals originally came from India. Muslims on there own probably would never have discovered the Americas.
As for Muslim Nobel prize winners, there are very few–there have only been twelve for the entire Muslim world. And this is skewed because it includes such farces as Yasser Arafat for the Peace prize.
Then, many of these were lax Muslims or ‘bad’ Muslims, minority Muslims like the Ahmadi who are not recognized as real Muslims by their more orthodox coreligionists, and apostates.
Ahmadi scientist Mohammad Abdus Salam had his grave defaced by the Pakkistani government for daring to identify him as a Muslim.
Tawakel Karman and Malala Yousafzai got their prizes for opposing Islam’s oppression of women, and both are hated in the Muslim world–Yousafzai was infamously shot in the head by pious Muslims, and had to flee to the West.
Writer Orhan Pamuk has also had to flee to the West, and he is an apostate who only identifies as a “cultural Muslim”. Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz was stabbed by a pious Muslim. lost the use of his writing hand, and never fully recovered his health.
It is a sad list.

The Jew Hating began in these Middle East Study departments. Read Martin Kramer’s Ivory Towers on Sand: The Failure of Middle Eastern Studies in America.

COMPARE!!!
Excerpt from “On Jihad” letter that I wrote a while back. My point; always “compare”. Compare Muhammad to Jesus, compare Sheikh Abdullah bin Humaid’s article on Jihad to Emmet Fox’s book Sermon on the Mount and compare the Koran to the Bible. And compare the religion that promotes itself as “the religion of peace” with the religion that doesn’t have to.

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah , witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” 5vs8
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” 49 vs13
How many times does the word “Love” appear in the Qur’an?
Many times. Countless times. We cannot even begin to count Allah’s love for his creation.
The Qur’an and the Bible tends to approach love differently. The Bible merely speaks about love. The Qur’an actually shows love. If you love someone you prove it to them by actions not words.
Allah’s love for his creation, not just Muslims come in the form of provisions or favors.
Many chapters of the Noble Qur’an speaks of Allah’s provision for his creation- my favorite is Surah Ar-Rahman the 55th Chapter of the Qur’an. Throughout this chapter Allah speaks of his love for his creation and between verses (not evenly distributed) is the phrase,
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
The superiority and the brilliance of the Qur’an is that it shows that love is not a single word. Love is too grand to fit a single word and a single definition as you have asked of me to point out the word love in the Qur’an.
The word love itself actually appears in the Qur’an in numerous places speaking mostly of how people love material and worldly things.
Qur’an 3:14
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire – of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.
Which is why I cannot give you a number. Because love is mentioned in the Qur’an countless times and in different forms.
Qur’an 14:34
And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is (generally) ungrateful.
The word “Love” had been mentioned 190 times in 79 verses the Qur’an as a whole according to different translations in :
Surat Al-Baqarah. (Verses 2,105,165,177 and 216)
Surat Aal-Imran. (Verses 14,31,32,57,92,103,118,119,123,140,152 and 188)
Surat Al-Ma’idah (Verse 54,64,82,87,100 and 105)
Surat Al-Tawbah (Verses 7,23,24 and 108)
Surat Yusuf (Verses 30 and 32)
Surat Taha (Verse 39)
Surat Al-Hashr (Verse 9)
Surat Al-Saff (Verse 13)
Surat Al-Qiyamah (Verse 20)
Surat Al-Insan (Verses 8,27 and 37)
Surat Al-Fajr (Verse 20)
Surat Al-’Adiyat (Verse 8)
Surat Al-Nur (Verses 19 and 22)
Surat Saad (Verse 32)
Surat Al-Hujairat (Verse 12)
Surat Yunus (Verse 62)
Surat Ibrahim (Verse 3,37)
Surat Mariam (Verses 76 and 96)
Surat Al-Ankabut (Verse 25)
Surat Al-Hashr (Verse 9)
Surat Al-Burooj (Verse 14)
Surat Al-Nisaa’ (Verses 25,36,73,102 and 107)
Surat Al-An’aam (Verses 76 and 141)
Surat Al-’Araaf (Verses 55,58,79 and 189)
Surat Al-Anfaal (Verse 58)
Surat Al-Nahl (Verses 23 and 107)
Surat Al-Hajj (Verses 38 and 59)
Surat Al-Qisas (Verse 76)
Surat Al-Rum (Verses 21 and 45)
Surat Luqman (Verses 15 and 18)
Surat Al-Shura (Verses 23 and 40)
Surat Al-Hadid (Verse 23)
Surat Al-Hashr (Verse 9)
Surat Al-Mumtahinah (Verses 1,2 and 7)
Surat Al-Anbiyaa’ (Verse 90)
These were the ones i was able to get out but since it depends on the English translation, i have used more than one English translation to get more results from different verses.
Allah knows best and i hope this answered your question.
Please stop hating Islam and Muslims. Jesus is not God, he is a messenger of the Almighty Allah.

There’s a lot to wade through here. Let’s begin:
Layi Adigun wrote:
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah , witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah ; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” 5vs8
……………………….
Note that “just” here means the imposition of the horrors of Shari’ah, including amputating the limbs of petty thieves, flogging those who take a sip of alcohol, stoning rape victims to death, and murdering anyone who dares to criticize this savagery.
More:
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” 49 vs13
……………………….
What does “righteous” mean in Islam? It means imposing brutal Islamic law on us, and slaughtering those who dare resist.
More:
How many times does the word “Love” appear in the Qur’an?
Many times. Countless times. We cannot even begin to count Allah’s love for his creation.
……………………….
What claptrap. The fact is that most of the references to love in the Qur’an are what “Allah” does *not* love:
“Verily, Allah does not love the unbelievers”
–Qur’an 3:32
“Allah does not love those who spread corruption”
–Qur’an 5:64
“Verily, Allah does not love the transgressors”
–Qur’an 2:190
Note that “spreading corruption” means allowing unbelievers to live without being killed,. and “transgressing” includes such things as loving your neighbor as yourself.
Most of the other references to love are that humans love the world, and are not eager enough to die while butchering Infidels.
More:
The Qur’an and the Bible tends to approach love differently.
……………………….
Well, *this* is certainly true. There is nothing in the Qur’an expressing “Allah’s” love for his creation. The Qur’an is an ugly and arid book, and there is no love in Islam.
More:
The Bible merely speaks about love. The Qur’an actually shows love. If you love someone you prove it to them by actions not words.
……………………….
Ah–right. God giving his only begotten son for the salvation of mankind is nothing, but “Allah” urging Muslims to rape and slaughter Infidels is “love”–*very* sick stuff.
More:

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
……………………….
Actually, this Arabic passage translates to “so what are your gods lying”.
This is not about love–this is all about violent Muslim supremacy.
More:
The superiority and the brilliance of the Qur’an is that it shows that love is not a single word. Love is too grand to fit a single word and a single definition as you have asked of me to point out the word love in the Qur’an.
……………………….
Right–why talk about love when you can instead talk about how Muslims can show “Allah’s” love by enslaving, raping, and mass-murdering unbelievers?
More:
The word love itself actually appears in the Qur’an in numerous places speaking mostly of how people love material and worldly things.
……………………….
In other words–as I have already noted–this is not about “Allah” loving people–it is about his castigating them for not killing enough Infidels:
“Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.”
–Qur’an 2:216
More:

Qur’an 14:34
And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is (generally) ungrateful.
……………………….
Just as I noted.

…These were the ones i was able to get out but since it depends on the English translation, i have used more than one English translation to get more results from different verses.
……………………….
Actually, the Qur’an is equally hideous in whatever translation. The on-line Qur’an corpus shows this to be the case.
More:
Allah knows best and i hope this answered your question.
……………………….
Like all apologists for the horrors of Islam, Layi Adigun has revealed far more than she intended here…
More:
Please stop hating Islam and Muslims. Jesus is not God, he is a messenger of the Almighty Allah.
……………………….
If you don’t want Muslims to rape and murder you you are guilty of “hating Muslims”
And this last is a specific threat to Christians–believe that Jesus’ actual role is to murder Christians in the last days, or Muslims will murder you now.
Layi Adigun says
Your responses really confirmed the believe that Christianity is being spread with lies and falsehoods.
See how you interpreted simple English words!
Your response has not only showed your shallow knowledge of Islam, it portrayed you as someone with hate filled hearth, a religious bigot, slanderer and liar.
You should rather read more about Islam and stop this nonsense going on here.
Your religion destroyed Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Somalia, Mali, Libya and host of others. The list of evils your Christianity perpetrated in Africa can’t be exhausted. Your bishops are paedophiles, they sodomised our young boys, they take Africans as slaves…
May be you don’t know, Christians lack moral standard to criticise Islam, Your stupid missionaries brought/spread colonialism in Africa and other parts of the world. Oh yee Children of hate! What is your Christianity stand on racism in America?
Christians are the worst of all reasoning species have ever encountered, they will never like you until you join their illogical European ideology called Christianity. They are impostors, preaching fake love.
Anyway, I’m not surprised that you’ve resorted to lies and slandering in your evangelism. The whole pillars of your illogical European ideology called Christianity are cast on lies and falsehoods. Answer these questions;
Why did the Jews rejected Christianity? Why are the Catholics are not worshipping Jesus but his mother? Why are the Catholics bowing down for statues? Whose pictures Christians are brandishing as Jesus ? Is Jesus God? Why is it that Jehovah’s witnesses believed Jesus isn’t God? Why is it that certain part of Christiandom believe Jesus is God while others believe he’s not? Until you can answer these probing questions satisfactorily, keep your mouth shut and stop saying what you don’t know.

Everyone who believe that Islam is a religion of peace must not push that to us, he/she must tell and teach that to isil, al-Qaeda, boko haram etc.
