“The Parole Board of Canada warned prior to his release there was no evidence Mohamed had abandoned extremist beliefs and said it was concerned he would continue to commit terrorist crimes.”
Why, then, was he released? But it’s no surprise that his views hadn’t changed. Nothing, nothing whatsoever, was done while they were in prison to challenge his jihadist beliefs. Any such effort would have been “Islamophobic.” Instead, these beliefs were reinforced, as the jihadis are given Qur’ans and allowed to pray Islamic prayers together, despite the fact that the Qur’an inspired them to commit or plot jihad violence in the first place. Would Nazi prisoners during World War II have been given copies of Mein Kampf and allowed to congregate to study the words of the Führer?
“This is more clear evidence that we need a proper de-radicalization program for terrorism offenders,” said Queen’s University Prof. Amarnath Amarasingam, who studies terrorism and radicalization.
Amarnath Amarasingam is selling snake oil. Deradicalization programs are an abysmal failure everywhere they have been implemented. From the Jihad Watch archives:
Gitmo prisoner reveals: Saudi “deradicalization program” is really a jihad training program
11 ex-Gitmo prisoners flee the Saudi “rehabilitation program” and join up with terrorist groups
Jaw-dropper: 25 former Gitmo detainees “return to militancy” despite Saudi rehab program!
Flight 253 jihadist wasn’t cured by Saudi anti-jihad art therapy
Former Guantanamo detainee now top al-Qaeda ideologue — “He was transferred to Saudi Arabia in 2006 where he was placed in a national rehabilitation project.”
Indonesian government admits that its jihadist rehab program is a failure
Malaysia: Muslim cleric active in deradicalization program promotes hatred of non-Muslims
France’s only jihadi “deradicalization” center is closing — it was voluntary, and it was empty
The whole premise of “deradicalization” is that Islam is a religion of peace that jihadis misunderstand, twist, and hijack. Since that is a false premise, and warfare against unbelievers is actually taught in the Qur’an and Sunnah, “deradicalization” focuses on other issues, such as “anger issues” that the jihadi may have, his feelings of “alienation,” and the like.
But since none of that changes what the Qur’an and Sunnah say about warfare against unbelievers, it doesn’t “deradicalize” the jihadi at all.
“Convicted al-Qaeda supporter arrested for 2nd time since release from prison,” by Stewart Bell, Global News, August 24, 2020:
Convicted al-Qaeda supporter Kevin Omar Mohamed was arrested by Toronto counter-terrorism police on Sunday for the second time since his release from prison last year.
Mohamed, 27, was to appear in court Monday to face a terrorism peace bond following his arrest by the RCMP-led Ontario Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (O-INSET).
The arrest came six weeks after he was arrested for allegedly violating the conditions of his probation by possessing a cell phone capable of accessing the internet.
“On August 21, 2020, RCMP O-INSET came into possession of information through the course of an investigation which led them to form a belief that Kevin Mohamed may pose a risk to public safety,” the RCMP said in a news release.
He was arrested on a warrant that is the first step to imposing a terrorism peace bond, a tool used to restrict the actions of those found to be national security threats.
“The purpose of the terrorism peace bond is to compel Kevin Mohamed to abide by court sanctioned conditions which would mitigate the risk of him committing a terrorist related offence. In addition, on this date and pursuant to judicial authorizations, two residences associated to Kevin Mohamed were searched by police,” the RCMP said.
The case points to Canada’s struggle to deal with terrorism offenders coming out of prison still radicalized.
The Parole Board of Canada warned prior to his release there was no evidence Mohamed had abandoned extremist beliefs and said it was concerned he would continue to commit terrorist crimes.
“This is more clear evidence that we need a proper de-radicalization program for terrorism offenders,” said Queen’s University Prof. Amarnath Amarasingam, who studies terrorism and radicalization.
“Simply arresting them and putting them in prison isn’t going to address their political grievances, properly contextualize the thinkers and ideas they are consuming.”….

It is rather unrealistic to insist that a person not have a mobile telephone. Before long, in keeping with their track record concerning capitalist inventions, the Left will make it a human right.

Michael, The article stated that he was forbidden to possess a mobile phone with the capability to access the internet. I do, however, agree with your sentiments.

If your choice is prison or not illegally using a cell phone, most civilized people would choose the latter, no matter how inconvenient.
Besides, does anyone really believe that this Jihadist was just using his phone to call for Uber rides, order pizza, or look up who that familiar-looking actor in the latest Netflix series is?

Prof. Amarnath Amarasingam is correct that a de-radicalization program is needed, but such a program requires a historical-critical approach to the foundational texts of Islam. Chiefly, jihadists must learn that the Koran is of human origin, and thus, the Koran is NOT a guide to conduct in the 21st century. It is the fabrication of caliphs, mainly the fabrication of Caliph ABD AL MALIK (b.647 – d.705) and his lieutenant Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. Once jihadists are convinced the Koran cannot be considered as divine, they will be unable to return to jihad and will probably leave Islam with confidence.
RichardL says
the counter-terrorist literature has actually moved on: there is wide consensus in the literature for years now that de-radicalisation does not work, no matter the pedagogy or content. Guys like Amarasingam just get money for advising governments and governments want guys who tell them that de-radicalisation works, it has nothing to do with islam anyway, etc. By the way, if you hear an academic now spout nonsense about poverty causing radicalisation: the academic consensus has moved away from the over a decade ago, too.

Mortimer, you have never said what authorities have made use of such a program, and where all of the success stories are. Still waiting.
LB says
Ah yes, the famous “de-radicalization programs”, of course! If only those existed a millennia ago, none of the sufferings muslims caused would happen! How much would they cost though? Trillions? Quadrillions? Yep, seems completely affordable. And if the programs happen to fail, that just means we haven’t poured enough money in them — double the amount! And keep doubling every time they fail. I’m sure after some thousand tries or so islam will be “cured” out of muslims. Either that or the price of a water bottle will jump to around one million dollars at which point 99.9999% of the population will die of thirst. Problem solved! Thanks Mortimer 🙂

A former University of Waterloo student, Mohamed travelled to Syria in 2014, made contact with the local al-Qaeda faction and encouraged others to come fight or conduct attacks in the West.
On social media, he described himself as a “supporter of international terrorism” and said “you shouldn’t live in the lands waging war on Islam unless your [sic] planning attacks against them.”
He wrote that attacking the West was “really beautiful” and asked “bros in the West” why they weren’t conducting more attacks and suggested “killing vulnerable soldiers right now.”
He also sent a message about security at the Royal Military College in Kingston, which was forwarded to a senior ISIS attack planner in Syria, Reyaad Khan, the RCMP alleged.
(Note: this sounds like a serious threat to Canadians, doesn’t it?)

Under old news Marc Levine 25, aka Gamil Rodriguez Lias Gharbi, son of Algerian Muslim immigrant shot and killed 14 women , wounded 10 other women and 4 men at Ecole Polytechnic in Montreal. He believed women were intended to serve men, admired Hitler, and planned his attack for months. Justine has used this shooting over and over to talk about gun control, never about his ideology or real name.
And then there is Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati, Muayyed Nureddin,
and let us not forget Fadad Hussain—found unconscious in a home outside Toronto, with 31 stolen, high end, identical hand guns and 42 kilos of carfentanil (enough to kill everyone in Canada) and an Islamic headdress.
Many months later Fadad’s brother, Faisal Hussain, 29, shot and killed 10 year old Julianna Kozis, 18 year old Reese Fallon, and badly wounded 13 other people -altered some of the wounded lives forever. He had a matching hand gun, a stolen Smith and Wesson and 911 DVD in his bedroom. He walked down Danforth Ave. one sunny day and shot who he wanted to and then shot himself. Was he and his family investigated after finding his brother Fadad?

A “proper de-radicalization program” for Muslims? Sure… just have them renounce their god, prophet, and holy book.
mortimer says
Exactly, when Muslims realize that the Koran is of human origin and that Mohammed’s teachings are contradictory and opportunistic, they leave Islam.
Today, most Muslims do not argue that Mohammed is a good role model. His abysmal record of human rights abuses cannot be defended and Muslims have almost completely abandoned trying to defend Mohammed. Mohammed is a vicious 7th-century warlord without any redeeming qualities.

ALL religious texts are of human origin (except my religion’s texts, of course).

Rarely: Even assuming what you aver is so, one particular text, starting with a “K” (or is it a “Q”?), is a menace to mankind big time compared to other major religious texts.
Not all religions are created equal. Some actually have wisdom in them and go well with democratic tenets. That damn religious work, however, that starts with a “K” (or “Q”) is a mortal enemy of real liberty which is to say it is a mortal enemy of true democracy.

@Mortimer
Yes.The koran is of human origin and of course the Bible too is written by humans but here is the difference.
There is a Wisdom Source behind the Bible:For example Prophecy comes from this particular source{2 Peter 1 v 20-21}
The 4 Gospels{matthew,mark.luke and John} were written by human beings but WITH the assistance of this Wisdom Source.
All Biblical prophecies come via this Wisdom Source.
This wisdom source is discernible in the OT and NT but it is not discernible in the koran{but you would need access to this Wisdom source to detect that!}
Christianity calls this Wisdom source the Holy Spirit.
This Wisdom source{like the Golden rule and the 2 chief comamndments} is not in islam.
{in fact in koran 5:116 you might note that in allah’s EPIC misunderstanding of what he thinks constitutes the Christian doctrine of the Trinity,the Holy Spirit is missing:but that is the Wisdom Source behind the Bible!}
There is too, a difference between Knowledge and Wisdom.islamic ‘scholars’ love to boast about the knowledge in the koran but there is no wisdom Source behind the koran as there is the Bible.
They,and the ignorant,cannot see this.
It is not simply that there are HOLES in the narrative.
The Bible{written by humans} shows the PRESENCE of the Holy Spirit
The koran{written by humans} shows the ABSENCE of the Holy Spirit
That is the difference.

Study harder for one thing. In Mohamed’s case, 27 years of Islamic-based indoctrination of hatred of all and sundry will not be removed by three hours of de-radicalization.
