Illinois State Rep calls for the abolition of history classes in the state’s public schools

Aug 3, 2020 6:00 pm By Robert Spencer

Rep. Ford claims that “current school history teaching leads to white privilege and a racist society.” Meleika Gardner of We Will says: “Miseducation has fed and continues to feed systemic racism for generations. If Black History continues to be devalued and taught incorrectly, then it will call for further action.” Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty adds: “I support House Bill 4954 because I am interested in learning more and believe the history of Black people should be taught to all children and include all groups, Women, LatinX, and Native Indians who helped to build America.”

All this gives the impression that February is White History Month, not Black History Month, and that the teaching of history in public schools has more of a slant toward the Confederate States than the United States. This is, of course, absurd. We see the products of public education in America today venting their hatred for their native land every night now in Seattle and Portland.

What we need is not more focus on the grievances of this or that group, but rather on what has made the nation great for all of us, of every race and ethnic background. Rep. Ford’s initiative is yet another in a long line of Leftist attempts to erase our history and make us ashamed of being Americans, which will lead us to not having either the will or desire to defend this nation from internal and external attacks.

What we need now, when so many people are telling us that America was never great and is nothing to be proud of, is an unapologetic reaffirmation of what did indeed make this nation the greatest, most magnanimous, freest country the world has ever known. That’s why I wrote Rating America’s Presidents: An America-First Look at Who Is Best, Who Is Overrated, and Who Was An Absolute Disaster, which will be out in a few weeks and which you can preorder now. It evaluates the presidents of the United States on the simple basis of whether or not they were good for America and Americans. Along the way, it gives you a brisk reminder of the history that Leftist destroyers are trying to steal from us. If we do not know our own history, their sinister endeavor will be all the easier to accomplish. Rep. Ford himself put it best regarding why this book is urgently needed now: “the miseducation of our children must stop.”

“Chicago-Area Leaders Call for Illinois to Abolish History Classes,” NBC Chicago, August 2, 2020:

At a news conference, State Rep. LaShawn K. Ford said current history teachings lead to a racist society and overlook the contributions of women and minorities.

Before the event Sunday, Rep. Ford’s office distributed a news release “Rep. Ford Today in Evanston to Call for the Abolishment of History Classes in Illinois Schools,” in which Ford asked the ISBOE and school districts to immediately remove history curriculum and books that “unfairly communicate” history “until a suitable alternative is developed.”…

The full news release is below:

Rep. Ford Today in Evanston to Call for the Abolishment of History Classes in Illinois Schools

Concerned that current school history teaching leads to white privilege and a racist society, state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, will join local leaders today at noon at the Robert Crown Center in Evanston to call on the state to stop its current history teaching practices until appropriate alternatives are developed.

“When it comes to teaching history in Illinois, we need to end the miseducation of Illinoisans,” Ford said. “I’m calling on the Illinois State Board of Education and local school districts to take immediate action by removing current history books and curriculum practices that unfairly communicate our history. Until a suitable alternative is developed, we should instead devote greater attention toward civics and ensuring students understand our democratic processes and how they can be involved. I’m also alarmed that people continue to display symbols of hate, such as the recent display of the Confederate flag in Evanston.”

Attendees at Sunday’s press conference will discuss how current history teaching practices overlook the contributions by Women and members of the Black, Jewish, LGBTQ communities and other groups. These individuals are pushing for an immediate change in history changing practice starting this school year.

“The miseducation of our children must stop,” said Meleika Gardner of We Will. “It is urgent that it comes to an end as we witness our current climate become more hostile. Miseducation has fed and continues to feed systemic racism for generations. If Black History continues to be devalued and taught incorrectly, then it will call for further action.”

Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty notes “As Mayor, I am not comfortable speaking on education, curriculum, and whether history lessons should be suspended. This is not my area. Personally, I support House Bill 4954 because I am interested in learning more and believe the history of Black people should be taught to all children and include all groups, Women, LatinX, and Native Indians who helped to build America.”

The same sort of thing is currently happening in the United Kingdom, with the Left trying to discredit the extraordinary development of Britain over 1000 years -something every Briton should feel proud of.

The other day the BBC described British history as “murky”. The left is winning. In 20 years time the pride and glory of the British achievement will have been trashed, leaving behind nothing but resentful prejudices.

The truth is that the vast majority of people who made this country what is were white people from Europe. Yes, a few of them owned slaves but most did not. The Native Americans and the black people of Africa practiced slavery too. But why is it that the Native Americans did not discover Europe or that the black people of Africa did not discover America? The smartest and most fit won out in the race to civilize North America. That is the way things work in this world. That’s the way it should work and that’s the way it will always work. I’m not going to cry over it. Today, the least fit are living as parasites off the most fit. When the most fit die off, so will the least fit … and things will start all over.

Here is a link to a world IQ map:

      https://www.worlddata.info/iq-by-country.php

I think it speaks for itself. How is it possible that the continent with the people of lowest IQ is also the one with the fastest rate of growth in population? Does it mean people with low IQ will be the most successful in ruling the Earth? Is that the way nature works? Is being smart actually detrimental to survival of the species? Or …. has there been some sort of interference from outside the general population of Africa causing this to happen?

When you feed locusts, you get more locusts.

The native population of Africa in 1900 was estimated at between 2 and 10 million. That is approximately how many Africans can feed themselves without help. There are now somewhere north of a billion (population estimates are probably exaggerated as that leads to more monetary help from bleeding hearts and the UN). What happens when the West stops feeding these locusts?

I think that is worse than that.

Look at the current demographics of the United States now, and projected forward one or two generations.

“White people from Europe” in the United States” are far below the fertility replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman.

For example, the fertility rate for non-Hispanic whites in the United States as of 2018 was 1.64.

This does not mean to say that other races cannot add value – some spectacularly so (Dr. Ben Carson) – but this is just considering “averages”.

Well, in one sense, NO History might be better than WRONG History, but one cannot know where he is going unless he knows where he’s been. And I’m using “he” in the all inclusive sense, meaning it includes “she”, “they”, “it” and whatever, and curse you if you want me to use some “made-up” special pronoun; I won’t do it. As for who “built America”, it was persons of vision and merit, totally lacking in today’s world. And, oh yes, I have “White Privilege” for having merit, vision and determination, and I won’t give it up willingly. If you want “Black Privilege”, then CREATE it. It’s like WEALTH. It is NOT like the Socialist pie, that needs to be cut in smaller pieces to spread the wealth. Capitalists BAKE MORE PIE. Get out there, SJW’s, and CREATE your privilege. But you can’t, you want it redistributed from me because you are stupid and lazy, and totally without merit. Our “deplorable” Founding Fathers are ashamed of you, and rolling over in their graves.

Real history is a matter of asking ‘what really happened’, rather than asking ‘HOW CAN OUR GROUP GET MORE POWER?’

Traditionally, part of ‘Social Studies’ has been to teach children about their country so they may become well-informed, good citizens.

mortimer, it used to be that the study of Government and how it (the Republic form that we have) worked, was called “Civics”. Then it was renamed “Social” Studies, and THAT’s where the crap was snuck in. The word “Social” opened up a way to attach it to anything, like “justice”, which makes no sense. What it REALLY has become, is “Communist Studies”. End the Senate by ending the filibuster? End the Electoral College? They’ve made it so we no longer know which lie is the truth anymore. I remember my dad going into a rage when I brought my first “Report Card” with the “Social Studies” class on it, and it wasn’t because of a poor grade.

I remember when it was called Civics. I hated the class; it was very boring. Now I’m exceedingly glad that it was required. Education is not entertainment, and some parts are boring (at least to a kid), tough shit. That just means it’s going into the part of your brain that automates storage of material you’ll be glad to have fifty years on, along with the times table, spelling, and grammar.

Have you ever been around someone who is smarter, stronger, better looking than you are – someone who seemingly just naturally has all the traits you admire but which you lack and the skills which you would like to have but do not? Did you wish they would just go away or that you had never had to compete with them? I think this is how many black people feel when they compare the history of their race to the history of the white race. They don’t want to learn about the history of white people It would make them feel a lot better about themselves if white people would just go away. It takes a very special person to overcome a feeling of resentment that I admit is natural and, yes, I would also say is racist.

Work out more to become stronger: cardio, weight training, attention to diet, etc.

Attention to detail regarding weight, grooming standards, clothing.

Yes, as I said it takes a special person to feel as you do James … but apparently that is a rare quality. It’s too bad this State Rep and so many others like him do not feel as you do. If American society has a tilt toward the white viewpoint of the world, it’s because it was put in place by white people. For a society with a black viewpoint of the world, a person would best be advised to move to a country that was developed by black people. The only way to change that is to replace the people in the country and replace all the institutions in it … and that is what the Democrats (aka Democratic Socialists) want to do to the U.S.

Well, this is just grotesque–we need *more* history, not less, to be taught in the schools. And the idea that knowledge of history is somehow “white supremacist” is ludicrous–unless you believe that knowledge is intrinsically racist.

And my alma mater, UC Berkeley, is eliminating the use of the SAT and ACT tests–therefore giving a leg up to students from schools with the worst grade inflation. That many of them will not even be able to do the work is apparently of no concern.

That these objective tests have historically given poor students a chance–including myself–is being completely ignored.

My 8th and 11th grade American History classes back in the 1980s at a high-achievement high school BARELY got to WWII by the end of the school year; I learned more than most Americans know about it by 4th grade by putting together model planes, ships, tanks with my older brothers and listening to my dad who was a teen during the war. I read books on it and watched WWII movies on my own time and with my dad. We went to airshows displaying vintage warbirds. Even when I was attending a very prestigious college, less than a handful of students in my class knew anything about WWII or were even interested in it…but yet wanted to go into “Government”.

If they want to teach about the contributions by blacks, that’s fine. What we did not have growing up was the internet. I had to study the TV guide to find out if PBS has some interesting documentary on a subject (usually National Geographic or NOVA) and set aside time to watch it. Now I can pull up and watch 100s of different well-done documentaries of various qualities on all sorts of general historical and obscure subjects… with animated maps….animated 3-D modelling of architectural wonders….recreations of battles…. recreations of events and people. So I don’t know what these congressmen are whining about when kids could just watch these and have a more well-rounded understanding of things than my classmates could dream of. I think the kids are too coddled and don’t have enthusiastic history teachers. They know more about the founding mythologies and arcane backstories of fictional Marvel and Game of Thrones characters and the geography of Westeros than real history.

Since I am white I tend to look at the world with the same attitude that was instilled in me by most of the white people around me – my parents, teachers and friends were all mostly white. So I looked on YouTube for a black perspective on the recent flyer published by the National Museum of African-American History & Culture on “Whiteness.” The black man in the video seems quite well educated and intelligent but I have to admit I cannot understand his attitude concerning a culture’s acceptance of doing just enough to get by as being a good thing. If that were true the human race would have gotten stuck in the Bronze Age. Why develop iron tools when bronze will get the job done? Why invent the steamboat when sails work perfectly fine? Why have an automobile when a horse will take you wherever you want to go? I suppose I see his point to an extent but to me it is an argument for stagnation and a stifling of the human spirit for constant improvement. Perhaps some people prefer stagnation but that is not an idea that this country was founded upon. See for yourself:

“Some Oakland elementary principals are discouraging so-called “pandemic pods,” parents coupling small groups of children into home learning groups, KTVU reports. The arrangement could exacerbate social inequities in the classroom, the principals said…”

I had to read this twice to figure out what was going on. Did the principals think this might somehow increase the risk of children’s exposure to the Coronavirus? Then I realized what it is *really* saying–warning parents *not to teach their children too much*. because other parents may not be doing anything to teach their own children. In other words keep your children ignorant and allow them to fall behind–because at least then they won’t be learning more than other children. How perverse *is this*?

Isn’t the goal supposed to be to offer opportunities to all children–not to discourage them from learning anything? *Ugh*.

It also has something to do with white children being more likely to live in a home with both parents there to teach them (that’s a white thing). So, yes, the schools will discourage learning in some children in order to keep them from getting too far ahead of the children who come from homes where they are not given the opportunity to learn. They think it is better to keep all the children back than to leave some children behind. And so the American IQ level will continue to slip towards the levels we see in Africa while the levels in Africa will hardly move at all.

I believe that western civilisation, democratic government, the Scientific revolution and Industrial Revolution, etc, were the most important and impressive achievements of mankind and they were the product of white people. I don’t think that blacks have achieved anywhere near as much. I can imagine the history that black activists would try to create would be lies and garbage, where they try to claim that blacks have achieved far more than they have. In Australia, there has been a book written by a man named Bruce Pascoe, in recent years, who has tried to claim that Australian Aborigines were farmers and lived in villages, etc, when every historian until he came along says Aborgines in Australia were nomads and hunters and gatherers, not farmers. Pascoe version of history seems to be total rubbish and yet lefties, like the ABC, our equivalent of the BBC, have apparently been trying to give this BS credence. It suits their view of the way they would like things to have been even though it is rubbish. I haven’t had much interest in the subject, but have heard and read some commentary by Andrew Bolt, a commentator I admire a lot, who has torn into Pascoe’s garbage version of history. I suspect you’ll get the same fantasy land history from black activists who will seek to destroy the truth.

They try to fill you with remorse and get you to in the frame of mind where you feel compelled to make recompense to somebody – anybody! It doesn’t matter that you yourself have done nothing wrong. They will find a way of condemning your forefathers of some “crime” and make you feel guilty about that because you have derived benefit from their perceived crimes. ill if you yourself have succeeded – that just can’t be right – can it? You must have trodden on somebody’s toes or enslaved them to have got where you are. You may have seen an opening, created a business, provided employment for thousands supplying a product everybody wants – BUT – do they admire your enterprise and hard work? Do they hell! They will vilify and condemn you for that. They will make you, and your children feel guilty. They aren’t interested in mans advancements and evolution. They see no good in anything – just the evil of envy.

Yet more ignorant nonsense from another empty headed twerp. I doubt many of these black would be alive in a civilised country if it were not for “slavery”, not that I support historical slavery. The fact is we are all slaves, economic slaves. Why do I work? To pay bills, then multinationals glut on profits made. Wise up blacks, we are all slaves.

Sorry, working in a free society, no matter how onerous this may be at times, is *not* slavery.

That being said, I do agree that Black people in the US have more opportunity than most in Africa–or in places like the Caribbean and Brazil, as well.

I had an adult literacy student from Africa, and he asked why more Blacks in the US didn’t take advantage of the wide opportunities here. Even before he could properly read, he had started two businesses, and had passed one onto his cousin and his family. He planned to go to community college after he perfected his reading–he was making great strides. I only lost touch with him when he decided that Sacramento had as much opportunity as did the Bay Area, but with lower rents. He was also saving to buy a home–very impressive. (He was, unsurprisingly, Christian, and not Muslim). And this guy was *no slave*–he was very self motivated.

Meleika Gardner of We Will cannot have history being “taught incorrectly”. The operative word here is “incorrectly”. What is “correct”? It is not something objective like 2+2=4. “Correct” means whatever is APPROVED by whoever is in charge. If the Left is in charge it will be biased leftist propaganda that is “correct”.

Good catch, Del! I had missed that, but I’m sure you are right. Ugly stuff.

Blacks, worshiping stupidity and illiteracy all da livelong day …
We started busing, thinking that would “help” them, it didn’t.
We lowered academic standards, thinking that would “help” them, it didn’t.
We made ebonics a language, thinking that would help them, it didn’t.
We started affirmative action, thinking that it woould help them, it didn’t.
What will we do next to waste our time and resources on, thinking it will help them? It won’t.

A very good comment, Pray Hard. Australia is, of course, different to the USA, but what strikes me here in Australia is that the taxpayer has spent billions of dollars trying to improve the quality of life for Aborigines out here in all types of welfare payments and yet nothing ever seems to get better. There always seem to be complaints and calls for more money to be handed out. It seems to be exactly what you are pointing out. Nothing ever seems to work. I keep thinking that nothing ever will work. Just a hopeless situation.

        Look at Haiti, tim.

No matter how much money is shoveled into it, nothing changes.

Compare and contrast that country with the Dominican Republic, part of the same island…

James, I just have the feeling that some people stuff their own lives up and then they whinge and whine and demand that other people, who go to work and have their lives more in order, shell out endless welfare to support the do nothing whingers. In the case of Australia, the black Aborigines, say that the white man, the British, invaded the country. They stole the land. I can’t go along with this viewpoint at all. I believe strongly in western civilisation. The Aborigines in Australia were very primitive hunter gatherer people. Someone was bound to discover and take over the place. I guess what annoys me is that, as I said up above, despite billions of dollars of welfare handouts, nothing ever seems to get better. Just whingeing on and on. I have heard that Haiti is hopeless and corrupt. In the USA, are blacks just pretty hopeless and irresponsible, feckless people,(obviously with many exceptions) who just whinge and whine endlessly about how they are not treated well enough or are they really hard done by? Are a lot of their problems really their own fault? Here in Australia, Asian migrants and their children do incredibly well, doctors, scientific researchers, etc, as migrant groups often do, but Aborigines, with few exceptions, don’t seem to attain much advanced education or achieve much. Some great sports people but that’s about it. Of course, they would say that their land was stolen and hence they are in a mess. Nothing seems to work and I suppose that is what is frustrating. Maybe all that welfare money at least stops the Aborigines’ lives being even more hopeless.
