This was eminently predictable, and I predicted it. As I wrote here last month, “Rovinski is lucky that he didn’t target some revered figure on the left. If he had, antifa would be storming the prison today, and The New York Times and CNN would be running features about how, given the proper circumstances, lynching really isn’t all that bad. But in our increasingly open and unapologetic two-tiered justice system today, all the poor boy did was plot to kill someone The New York Times and CNN hates. So what’s the big deal? The smart money is on young Rovinski, mask no doubt firmly in place (the pieties of our new national religion must be observed, after all), walking out of his prison for good considerably before this long, hot summer is over.”
Also, Pamela Geller asks a pertinent question here: “The electronic monitoring is a joke, as is the home confinement. Last year a Muslim wearing an electronic tag killed a man in his deradicalization class and went out to wage jihad on the London Bridge. If Nicholas Rovinski participates in another plot to murder me, will Judge William Young be prosecuted?”
“Man guilty in terror plot against conservative blogger Pamela Geller to be freed amid coronavirus,” by Brooke Singman, Fox News, August 13, 2020:
A federal judge on Thursday, citing the coronavirus pandemic, ordered the release, of a Rhode Island man who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for participating in a plot to behead conservative blogger Pamela Geller on behalf of the Islamic State.
U.S. District Judge for Massachusetts William Young on Thursday announced the release of 29-year-old Nicholas Rovinski, whose lawyers this week argued that due to his medical conditions, which include cerebral palsy and hypertension, he is vulnerable to serious illness from COVID-19.
“The court concludes that there exist extraordinary and compelling circumstances that warrant granting this motion for compassionate release,” Young wrote in his order.
Rovinski was previously slated to be released from federal prison in 2028. He was sentenced in 2017 after pleading guilty to conspiracy for his role in the plot to kill Geller, who organized a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in Garland, Texas, in 2015.
Young reduced Rovinski’s sentence to time served, and ordered him to spend the next 10 years in home confinement with electronic monitoring, with the first six months in “strict home confinement.”
Young also denied prosecutors’ request to delay Rovinski’s release for 30 days while they consider an appeal. Prosecutors argued that the decision is an outcome “most would find hard to fathom under the circumstances, especially in the absence of any concrete rationale for the result.”
“We disagree with the court’s decision to now nullify that sentence – after only five years – based on COVID concerns,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling said in an emailed statement to the Associated Press.
“We realize that Rovinski has certain medical issues, but this does not justify releasing to ‘home confinement’ – after serving a mere third of his sentence – someone who willfully conspired to kill people for ISIS,” he wrote.
Rovinski, during the trial, testified against David Wright, who prosecutors described as the mastermind of the plot.
The cartoon contest Geller organized ended in gunfire, with two Muslim gunmen shot to death by police. The plot to behead Geller was never carried out. Instead, Wright’s uncle, Ussamah Rahim, told Wright on a recorded phone call that he decided to go after “those boys in blue,” referring to police. Hours later, Rahim was fatally shot by authorities after he lunged at them with a knife when they approached him in Boston.
Wright was sentenced to 28 years in prison but is scheduled to be resentenced next month after an appeals court overturned one of his convictions.
Geller said releasing Rovinski “sends the message to thousands of others like him that they can plot freely to murder those who say things that offend their evil ideology, and the consequences will be slight.”
“He terrorized our lives,” she said in an email to the Associated Press. “He has caused me and my relatives physical and emotional distress, as well as the crippling financial costs required as a result of his mass murder plot. This will never end for me, and so it should never end for Nicholas Rovinski.”…

Geller lives, having to look over her shoulder not knowing who is coming after her. Now she can add this animal to the growing known list. Where is the justice in that Judge William Young? Why the compassion for this convicted terrorist? We need minimum sentences that cannot be reduced for any reason.

She is one of the bravest people in the U.S.. but just like Mr. Wilders, she can never let her guard down. She deserves our support. I am sick of the commenters in other publications who think that she should shut up (so as to not incite more violence by people they are inculcated to “tolerate” as per PC guidelines of behavior. ) I wish Trump would nominate her (or Korbach) for head of DHS.
Cerebral palsy is not a condition, at least from what I can tell in the rare videos of this terrorist moving around, that makes you more prone to die from COVID. I see a lot of people all along the spectrum of CP. Some just have tight heel cords (Achilles tendon) that undergo a common lengthening procedure. He doesn’t look like he is a spastic quadriparetic wheelchair-bound CP sufferer with bulbar dysarthria. Very few young people die from COVID.
Did they diagnose him with Hypertension only after a single reading of 136/85 or greater? Was he bearing down or flexing his bicep to purposefully cause a false higher reading on the cuff? Is he on a prescribed anti-hypertensive that is keeping his SBP <136? It is only maybe a risk factor for mortality in OLDER hypertensive patients due to the EFFECTs of the high bold pressure CHRONICALLY on the arteries and heart.
I don't remember ISIS terrorists in Syria ever granting amnesty to victims facing a beheading or Rambo knife into the heart (before being shot in the head…the preferred method against Syrian Christians, btw).
Until Judges are legally liable for their bleeding heart decisions leading to more crime and injury (especially that of the intended victim), this stupidity will continue….. until one of their own elite superiors gets murdered or maimed by the perp. it might be time to flood his mailbox a nice assortment of graphic color photographs of what a beheading victim actually goes through.

This case provides an argument for capital punishment. The defendant was proved guilty of attempted murder on behalf of a foreign state at war against the USA. He should have been executed. “Do unto others, as they would do unto you.” He should have been executed.
As years pass and politicians get replaced, any sentence of years can always be reduced.

Yes it does and that is the answer ,not to change our domestic laws applied to domestic citizens the way the original poster wanted.

No we don’t need absolute minimum sentences that can’t be reduced. We already have something similar and it isn’t working to well for anyone .If it were only for terrorism or premeditated murder that would be one thing .It isn’t but is applied to all charges which is truly ridiculous. Why his compassion ?Fear, ignorance, exhaustion, agreement? Wish I knew the answer.

You think that’s compassion? Seriously? Compassion for whom? Certainly not his future victims.

Massachusetts judge frees Muslim who plotted to murder Pamela Geller
…………….
Utter insanity. Apparently while this judge cares about this Jihad terrorist’s supposed vulnerabilities, he cares nothing for Pamela Geller being at risk of being murdered by him.
What this judge is doing in freeing this unrepentant Jihad plotter is condemning the non-violent Ms. Geller to being terrorized.

Nicholas Rovinski could be free from COVID-19 exposure by being placed in solitary confinement – with excellent ventilation.
He does NOT need to be released to prevent exposure.
And, using their twisted logic, why have they waited until now?
revereridesagain says
Also he does not appear to belong to any of the “at risk” categories, so why the big urgency to release him?
Huh!?! says
This COVID-19-“84” sure is becoming an excuse for wrecking Uncle Sam. I recently read of an account where this same logic was used to free a rapist due to COVID risk. He hunts down his victim, kills her and then when police close in on him, now for second time, he shoots himself dead.
Can this judge be removed from the bench as he is at the federal level? My information is that the judge that released the rapist/killer was an Obama appointee. Is this judge the same?
This man got released because he is an islamist and Pamela Geller is an islamaphobe. Was there any condition that going anywhere that Pamela goes gets him thrown back in jail?
So he has hypertension eh. I suspect most criminals have hypertension. So we release all of them? People get hypertension driving in rush hour traffic. I fail to see why hypertension can be considered grounds for release. Did anyone inform the judge that there is medication for this type of condition? Prisons dispense medications to ill prisoners all the time. A compassionate response and yet the criminal stays in jail. This protects the rest of decent society that struggles with hypertension.
Who diagnosed him with cerebral palsy? How bad is it? Is it bad enough that he cannot move around well or quickly? He can be watched 24/7 in prison. How often will he have monitoring and medications now that he is out? This could be dangerous for him not having close monitoring. Let me guess, some of his jihadist pals are going to take care of him. Hmm…while planning other attacks in a private, secluded environment?
Yet if I want to go to church, a gym, a book store, eat lunch out, meet with friends at a park I am the demon that helps spread COVID. Would this judge throw the book at me?
Pamela and her family are in danger again.
I read that an appeal was to be put into the works. How fast can this islamist go back to jail? I sure pray it is fast enough to protect Pamela. Why did the judge not wait for the intended appeal to be filed? Pamela deserves that consideration and compassion.
Don’t forget to vote and in person.

More stupidity and arse kissing from the spineless authorities that have been put in place to protect the common people.
And therein lies the problem, the common people are not the ones who they devote their time and effort to protect.
All of the modern law makers and bureaucrats are focused on protecting the elites who put them in the high paying jobs, correction, “positions”. the term “job” insinuates work.
They have little to no interest in honoring the oath of office they all took.
Freeing an individual, I can’t define them as a human nor a man, who admitted to plotting to commit murder on behalf of a foreign terrorist organisation, to protect the health and safety of the felon is almost like a skit from a Monty Python movie, or the script from a dystopian film about a world where the concept of common sense has been overturned by mob rule.
I hope and pray to the creator spirit that Pamela Geller and others like her, who are the real guardians of justice are protected from these INDIVIDUALS.

Compassion for a convicted psychopath with zero consideration for the victim or society in general. This judge is a menace to society, a very sick individual. This calls in to question the mental state of the judge. At the very least a mental heath assessment is in order here but my guess is it would be a short one.

We need to start holding these judges, be they city, county, state, and especially federal accountable for such stupid-ass rulings. From there, the way I read it, the Constitution reads that the courts are to be advisors and not legislating from the bench. This like so many court rulings are just plane down right dangerous. If something happens to Pam Gellar this judge, the defendant, and the defendant’s attorneys should be jailed for both the release and the harm that would happen to Pam Gellar.
