I’m not in favor of burning the Qur’an. I believe people should read it and understand its contents rather than burn it. But in a free society, book-burning is not or should not be illegal. It is part of the freedom of expression; we may dislike it, but to outlaw it would restrict the freedom of expression in ways that would have negative consequences for society in other ways: the group that was prevented by law from being criticized or insulted, including having its holy book burned, would be free from all restraints and able to work its will unchallenged and unopposed. If Rasmus Paludin had intended to travel to Sweden to burn a Bible, would anyone have cared? Would he have been banned from the country or arrested? Police spokesman Calle Persson said: “We suspect that he was going to break the law in Sweden.” What law? Is burning a Qur’an against the law in Sweden? Is Sweden under Sharia now?
Persson added: “There was also a risk that his behaviour would pose a threat to society.” Note that this is the same sleight-of-hand British officials employed when they banned Pamela Geller and me from entering that country. Just as in our case, Paludin does not actually pose a threat to society. The people who were going to react violently and irrationally to his behavior pose a threat to society, and the Swedes lack the will to act against them, so they act against Paludin instead.
And now Muslims are rioting despite the Swedish authorities’ best efforts to prevent it from happening. The police did not burn the Qur’an, but they’re the ones getting stones thrown at them. The property destroyed and people injured in the riots likely had nothing to do with the people responsible for the Qur’an burning, but that is the deadly illogic of riots everywhere. We’re seeing the same thing now all over the United States.
The rioters are, of course, screaming “Allahu akbar.”
“Riots in Sweden’s Malmo after anti-Muslim Danish leader blocked from ‘Quran-burning rally’, given two-year ban,” Agence France-Presse, August 29, 2020:
Stockholm: Protesters threw stones at police and burned tyres in southern Sweden late on Friday, authorities said, hours after an anti-Muslim Danish politician was blocked from attending a Quran-burning rally nearby.
About 300 people were on the streets of Malmo with violence escalating as the evening wore on….
The demonstration was connected to an incident earlier in the day in which protesters burned a copy of the Islamic holy book, police spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told Swedish tabloid Expressen.
Rasmus Paludan, who leads the far-right Danish anti-immigration party Hard Line, was due to travel to Malmo to speak at that event….
But authorities pre-empted Paludan’s arrival by announcing he had been banned from entering Sweden for two years. He was later arrested near Malmo.
“We suspect that he was going to break the law in Sweden,” Calle Persson, spokesman for the police in Malmo told AFP.
“There was also a risk that his behaviour would pose a threat to society.”
But his supporters went ahead with the rally, and three people were then arrested for inciting racial hatred.
Paludan later put up a scathing message on Facebook. “Sent back and banned from Sweden for two years. However, rapists and murderers are always welcome!” he wrote.
Paludan last year attracted media attention for burning a Quran wrapped in bacon – a meat that is anathema for Muslims.
maria says
It isn ot good to burn the devilish book, but because nobody reads it (except muslims maybe) it was a good action of Mr. Paludan who is a real Danish patriot.
Denmark is still in much better situation than Sweden, because Danish people who were occupied by the nazis recognize neo nazis that is muslims.
Mr. Rasmus Paludan was stopped by the Swedish police yesterday when he should talk at the islam critical meeting. It took place in spite of the fact that police didn´t allow it.
Swedish people should take him as an example not to be afraid and fight the islam. Danish government though socialist, doesn´t dare to support islam, they send more and more muslims back to their countries.
Danish people were always the leading country in Scandinavia even if there are mor Swedes than Danes.
Sweden is on the way to be overrun by the muslims and then it will be the first state in Europe that will be islamic
mortimer says
Dear Maria, Disagree. In a civilized country the only possible reason for burning a book would be to prove our right of self-expression. A civilized person would not intentionally hurt the feelings of others gratuitously. The Koran was not literally written by Satan, because it was obviously written by humans for political ends of caliphs. Islam was created as an imperial religion, rather than as a folk religion. There is so much wrong with Islam and the Koran, that a scholarly, historical critique of Islam will do more damage than burning a Koran.
The freedom of expression will eventually be reaffirmed, but right now (especially in Sweden), a Leftist, neo-Marxist philosophy dominates academia and the media. This is gradually being refuted by neo-conservative thinkers. This conservative philosophical movement is also reaching Denmark and Sweden.
RichardL says
I love your scholarship, mortimer, but my experience with Sweden makes pretty sure that there is no saving that country. Norway and Denmark are different. Norwegians are the tough Swedes…
Book burning is not good when it is systematic. When it expresses hatred for an ideology I find it entirely appropriate even if I wouldn’t do it (publicly).
NotAM says
Well historical critique is actually not very effective. Because they burn them

”A civilized person would not intentionally hurt the feelings of others gratuitously.”
Don’t worry, I don’t take offence at statements in the koran to the effect that certain believers of fairy tales must seize me and slit my throat if they are to be considered good and proper muslims. It just makes me feel warm all over to know that someone is thinking about me.

According to the Criminal Code of Canada, the Koran is considered Hate Literature. Read Sections 318 and 319 of that Criminal Code and see how the Koran clearly meets the legal definition of Hate Literature. It specifically describes infidels ( non-Muslims) and demands and promotes violence and death. Kill all Jews, Strike their necks and on and on.
Agostino Armo Pellegrini says
I see burning the koran as an effective tactic for confronting islam because freedom of expression is very much the point with islam. They use their koranic religion as an excuse to threaten our liberty and free speech. And so burning that sh*t book is a poignant response to that threat, it conveys in the most frank terms our dislike of the immorality, ignorance, and evils it contains. In the end Mortimer is probably right, a scholarly critique may go further in damaging islam, but sometimes a good kick in the balls can help too. Let’s face it, violence is the language of islam, and it serves them well. Leftists buckle under that pressure, they’re giving our freedoms and nations away because they’re afraid of the violence muslims might do. So to me burning the koran is a well deserved slap in the face to all muslims who think they can use their fake religion to control us and destroy our freedoms. The fact that government officials around the world try to prevent this freedom of expression is a serious point of contention that needs resolution. They say we shouldn’t burn the koran, so that’s exactly what we need to do. And I agree with Richard, “book burning is not good when it is systematic,” but he seems to agree with me in thinking it’s “appropriate” to burn the koran. That book contains terroristic threats against all non-muslims, it’s their propaganda for evil. If they can cut heads for allah then we can burn the koran for freedom.
This is war dammit, muslims are killing and terrorizing, infiltrating and colluding. I don’t think we should restrict ourselves to one mode of defense. I wouldn’t defend myself with a book of morals against a band of rabid monkeys, and I don’t think we can rely solely on reasoned argument against a retarded and violent religion and the idiots who believe it.
Thanks for listening. 🙂
Savvy Kafir says
Well said, Agostino! I agree with every point you made here.
The super-aggressive Muslims invading our countries need to be resisted in a variety of ways. One useful tactic is to publicly give Islam (and Muslims) the middle finger by burning the Qur’an. This is one of the most outrageous/rage-inducing insults to Islam we can give — and THAT makes it useful. It’s important for us to stand up for free speech and free expression and tell these invaders to f*ck off. There is nothing gratuitous about the act of burning a Qur’an.
Also, when Muslims react with rage and violence, they reveal their true nature and their hostility towards non-Muslims — and people see them as the uppity savages they are; and more of the voting public begins to see Muslims as a threat to civilized society.
As you said, we are AT WAR. We can’t be shy.
Well-reasoned arguments certainly have their place in this conflict — as does encouraging non-Muslims to read the Qur’an. But it’s going to take a lot more than that to successfully resist the spread of Islam. It’s going to require bold action as well. It’s going to require BOLD public rejections of Islam and its devotees, expressed via acts such as burning the Qur’an.
Agostino Armo Pellegrini says
This is one of the most outrageous/rage-inducing insults to Islam we can give — and THAT makes it useful.
Exactly, you said that so well it tickled my belly :))
The koran is their linchpin reason for the violence and bigotry they enact against us. Not only is it acceptable that we burn it, we should feel a patriotic obligation to do so. That book and the fake religion it spawned is a mortal threat to our freedom of expression (not to mention our lives and lands). And so an ideal way to express our disagreement is to burn the book that threatens that very freedom: that is, the freedom to disagree without fear of violence. It doesn’t hurt anyone physically, and if the koran-burner owns the book then nobody is robbed. It’s a form of expression, that’s all, and it’s one that muslims need to learn to tolerate without resorting to murderous baby-tantrums. Our battle with islam isn’t just about burning that book, it’s about their entire mindset that says they can control our lives for what’s in it, that’s the real life and death issue here. The fact that muslims get violent over a burning episode like this is the very point we need to make, it underscoes the larger jihad problem perfectly. We cannot live with people who think they can control our thoughts and our lives for a retarded superstitious construct that glorifies violence and worships a demon. It should be a wake up call to all civilized people when they see how muslims react, it highlights the bigger problem of islamic totalitarianism that threatens our free nations. The burden should not be on us to sacrifice our basic humanitarian rights for them, like free expression, the moral and legal burden is on them to adjust their intolerant and murderous ways for us.
Savvy Kafir says
Agostino — I agree with everything you said in response to my earlier comment … with one exception. I don’t expect Muslims in the West to change. The True Believers will NEVER learn to handle criticism of their religion or their prophet without resorting to violence. That sort of response is embedded in the very DNA of Islam, and devout Muslims know they have a religious obligation to silence criticism of Islam via any means necessary.
I don’t expect Islam-in-the-West to be contained or defanged by anything we infidels do or say. In the long run, the ONLY solution that will keep free, civilized societies free and civilized is to deport/expel all Muslims. Many people say that’s a fantasy — that it could never be accomplished. But I say expecting to prevent the Islamization of the West by any other means is a fantasy. And I’ve got 1,400 years of Muslim history backing me up.
gravenimage says
Agree, Savvy Kafir–and we should start by curbing Muslim immigration into the free West. President Trump’s “Muslim ban” is a good first step. Even before the Coronavirus lockdown, Muslim immigration into the US was down 90%.
Michael Copeland says
Islam has no tradition of reasoning nor of debate. Questions in the madrassas are discouraged by painful blows: they amount to challenging Allah, which is blasphemy, punishable by death.
“For things which have been stipulated in the texts of Islam, the Ummah possesses no power except to acknowledge and obey”, rules Dr Salah al Sawy.
https://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2011/03/31/american-muslim-leader-issues-fatwa-against-democracy/
Reasoning is disdained as weakness. An aggressive response is admired, and great passion is considered the winning display.
Most muslims do not speak Arabic. They are trained to read it so that it can be committed to memory (though without knowledge of what it is that it is saying). Elevating the book itself into something unassailable that has to be almost worshipped is part of the tyranny.
Debate and reasoning leave many muslims floored. They are accustomed to authoritative rulings with unquestioning obedience and submission. Individual responses do not form part of their training.
Muslims are instructed that they are at war. They tell us: “I am a soldier and we are at war” (7/7 bomber). Our politicians do not accept it: they think they know better.
Agostino Armo Pellegrini says
Yeah, you summed it perfectly. Islam was not built on reasoned or virtuous thinking, it was founded on bloodshed and blind obediance to authority. Spencer has spoke of the time when he was debating a muslim once, and after he–Spencer–offered a reasoned argument to defend his position the muslim’s only response was that he was a racist/bigot. No counter argument, no reasoned rebuttal, just Ad Hominem insults. And anyone who has listened to Spencer knows he’s a five star debater without even a tinge of racial bias, so there’s no justification for the rude epithets they hurl. The sad truth is, there is no intelligent and moral defense of islam, because it’s theologically absurd and contains little by way of superior knowledge. If islam wasn’t so deadly I’d feel sad about it, it’s so uneducated, so absurd, a kind of moral and spiritual retardation. I know there are many who will disagree with me, but that’s my opinion based on the evidence I see every day about islam.
Agostino Armo Pellegrini says
I don’t expect Muslims in the West to change. The True Believers will NEVER learn to handle criticism of their religion or their prophet without resorting to violence.~Savvy
I put no stock in the idea that our muslim communities at large will ever change and become loyal Americans over islam. I’m simply expressing the view that the moral burden is not on us to change it’s on them, that’s not the same as saying I truly believe they will do it. Perhaps in some far off generation the ummah will come to its senses and become less idiotic and dangerous for retarded islam, but it won’t happen in our life time. No Way, Jose. 🙂

I do not believe in burning books nor censorship.
Having said that, the Quran NEEDS to be available for the rational and loical person to read and understand why it is such an evil book that demands the extermination of non-Moslems.
However.
I do believe that neither Islam nor Moslems have any business in being in countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Italy, nor any other European country except Turkey.
Moslems are better off living in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Somalia, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran.
Savvy Kafir says
abad, Burning your own copy of the Qur’an — as a method of publicly standing up for freedom of expression, as a form of protest against the Islamization of the West, and to generate public discussion on that issue — is FAR different from the organized banning and burning of books by totalitarian authorities trying to stamp out dissent.
The goals are very different, and the consequences are not the same.

Yasir Qadhi’s the ‘standard narrative has HOLES in it” I see ,is now a music REMIX.
Yasir Qadhi’s video that won’t go away. Thanks to muhammed hijab for that.
Yasir Qadhi {‘What is going on?’}kindly told everybody that when you do a DEEP DIVE{..SPLASH!..}into the koran ‘things get very awkward’ and informs us ‘it should never be brought up in public”.
{The standard narrative you see, has HOLES in it:ssh,you are not supposed to know!}
Yasir Qadhi’s interview with muhammed ‘hey, look at my muscles’ hijab was a spectacular own goal by islamic apologists and gave the game away.islamic ‘scholars’ are LYING and have been for a long, long time. This interview resulted in the Thermonuclear implosion of muhamed hijab:he invites Qadhi on his show and Qadhi gives the game away.Hilarious!
It was then that the holy koran became Holey.
You can have all the high faluting scholarship you want but Satire and the use of Humor will not go away to spare anyone’s feelings.

allah’s ‘perfect’ book the koran.
In relation to the Bible{Torah+Gospel}
The teachings of the koran do not conform to the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets:allah it seems MISSED ….the First Chief Commandment Deut6:4-9,the Second Chief Commandment Lev19:18{impossible in islam because of koran 98:6,koran 2:65 and islam’s doctrine of Hate al walaa wal barra},the Golden Rule,the concept of humans being made in the image of God{and thus EQUAL:but the koran discriminates against Non-muslims see koran 98:6} Genesis 1:27,the Wisdom Source behind the Bible{the Holy Spirit,where prophecy comes from 2 Peter 1 v 20-21}is NOT in the koran{see koran 5:116 and notice allah’s EPIC THEOLOGY fail where he mistakenly thing MARY is in the Christian Trinity}
the essential role of the Jews{John 4 v 22 ‘it is from the Jews that salvation comes’} is denied,the koran gives permission to violate the Exodus 20 Decalogue thus defeating the purpose of the Law being given to Moses in the first place by YHWH{the revealed name of God, which is NOT ‘allah’}
allah tells us he gave “Jesus”{the muslim} the Gospel koran 5:46{Impossible!},Jews believe ‘Ezra is the son of allah'{koran 9:30}which they don’t,and that the key patriarchal Jewish figure of Judaism,Abraham ‘was not a Jew’ koran 3:67
Because of course since the Jews are ‘to be despised and hated’ koran 2:65 he was clearly a muslim as he couldn’t possibly be Jewish
{Btw Abraham is in the Genealogy of Jesus who of course is Jewish:so of course Abraham is connected with the Jews}
There are no errors in the koran according to islamic scholars:well.except for all the errors in the koran.allah says if you can find ANY errors in the koran 4:82 that would show the koran to be from ‘other than allah’:but when you look at all the errors in the koran, like Yasir Qadhi you might wonder ‘What is going on?”.It’s as if the koran was written by that Norse god Loki the practical joker.
It is a demonstrably bogus, plagiarized scripture

What Ismail Ali means here is why are Infidels opposed to Muslims beating their wives, raping Infidels and using them as sex slaves, and mass slaughtering them if they do not submit to Islam? He finds this savagery perfectly acceptable.
And burning the Qur’an is not an attempt to wipe out the existence of this vicious text–it is an editorial comment on its ugly contents.
Then, the fact that so many Mohammedans have approvingly memorized these horrors is another reason not to import them into the free West.

I wonder what would have happened if, instead of physically burning a copy of the Quran (copies of which in these days of mass publishing, funded by zillions of petrodollars, are churned out by the millions upon millions), he had merely opened up a laptop computer or i-phone, to show a “Quran file” (in Arabic and Swedish – I bet such document files would exist! or a PDF file, or two PDF files, one created from photographing or scanning the pages of an Arabic Quran, the other from photographing or scanning the pages of a Swedish translation – which, no doubt, exists, and probably in countless thousands of copies whether digital or on-paper); and had then ostentatiously “dragged” said PDF files, containing digital copies of the Quran and its Swedish translation, into the “trash” and then hit the command saying “empty trash” (or whatever procedure one uses, depending on which type of phone or computer you possess, in order to delete a file!!)??? And had had someone filming *that* process?
As for burning a book… it’s not as big a deal today as it once was (provided, of course, that the book is one’s own property, lawfully acquired by the usual methods).
Once upon a time, to produce any text and then to replicate it afterward, somebody had to laboriously write out, by hand, each and every word. Copying was slow, hard work. If you burnt a manuscript, you destroyed the embodiment of hours and hours of labour; and there might not be very many copies.. or even any other copy at all. The entire text of the poem of “Beowulf”, as known today to scholars, depends on just. two. manuscripts (one of which very nearly got burnt up, when the Cotton library in Britain burnt down).
The invention of the printing press made the burning of a mere individual book rather less serious; hundreds or thousands of copies of a work, provided someone was prepared to typeset and publish it, could be produced quite quickly, so that each individual book, considered as a physical object (churned out from the printing press) represents a much smaller input of human time and effort (and it’s a lot harder to find and burn ALL the copies of any book provided it’s had a large enough “print run”).
And then we enter the digital age, where texts can be produced – word processors! – multiplied and communicated rapidly cheaply and endlessly; and these days, most households have a printer so if someone wants hardcopy, all they need is to feed the printer some ink and paper, open up the document file and hit the PRINT button to have as many copies as they want to make…In this age, burning – or, as already described, merely electronically deleting! – a Quran, or any other text of which there are known to be an almost uncountable number of copies both on-paper and electronic extant and circulating all around the world, is really.. no big deal.
If someone burns, say, great-great-uncle Fred’s personal diaries of his experiences during WWI – without having first scanned the diaries and then made multiple copies of the scanned documents to be lodged in a dozen diffferent libraries – then THAT would be more serious than burning a mere printed copy of the Quran (copies of which are, today, basically a dime a dozen) because it would be destroying something unique and irreplaceable.
dumbledoresarmy says
From the article – “But his supporters went ahead with the rally, and three people were then arrested for inciting racial hatred.” *Racial* hatred??? But there surely would be at least some lily-white ethnic Swedes who are converts to Islam. So what race are they??
Perhaps, before burning the Quran, he should have read out some of the passages that are very manifestly denigrating and despising – and inciting aggression toward – non-Muslims qua non-Muslims. Has Wafa Sultan’s book ” A God Who Hates” been translated into Swedish or into Danish?
Alternatively, Paludan could have brought two books to the burning – one a copy of Mein Kampf, and the other a copy of the Quran – and tossed both into the fire side-by-side, after first quoting what Winston Churchill said about Mein Kampf – “the new Koran of faith and war”. And when accused of inciting ‘racial hatred’ by burning a Quran, he should have asked whether burning Mein Kampf was inciting racial hatred against Germans…

This being said, I, honestly, started by the thought that burning the satanic book, the Koran, does not prevent Muslims from invading our civilized countries. In other words, this act would increase the violence by Muslims with no physical gain for us.Islam, Muslims are extremely hateful and they get static enjoyment in killing, raping women and boys and burning and destroying anything.
They do not fit to live in our countries. Any message demonstrating that thought would be welcomed. That is why I am inclined to change my mind to support the idea of burning this horrible book. The main reason is to show the Muslims that we are not going to bow to their ridiculous and insulting demands AND OF THEIR MERE EXISTENCE in our countries, and more important to our INTENTION of fighting back.
