Here is the full statement I sent to Church Militant:
The “Document on Human Fraternity” that Pope Francis signed with the Sheikh of al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayeb, and is now aggressively pushing upon the Catholic Church, states that “the protection of places of worship – synagogues, churches and mosques – is a duty guaranteed by religions, human values, laws and international agreements.” The conversion of Hagia Sophia and now the Chora church to mosques demonstrates the signal failure of this document, which anyone could have predicted from the moment it was signed in February 2019. The document did not and could not eradicate Islam’s supremacist doctrines and long tradition of the appropriation of the houses of worship of other faiths to demonstrate the victory and supremacy of Islam. One cannot help but wonder if al-Tayeb was having a little joke at Francis’ expense by including in the Human Fraternity document the stipulation that “every attempt to attack places of worship or threaten them by violent assaults, bombings or destruction, is a deviation from the teachings of religions as well as a clear violation of international law.” Conspicuous by its absence is any mention of the forcible seizure of the places of worship of one faith by the aggressive and supremacist adherents of another. That is not condemned in the document — which is not to say that it would have made any difference if it had been. And now that appropriation proceeds apace.
“Turkey Converts Chora Church Into Mosque,” by Jules Gomes, ChurchMilitant.com, August 21, 2020:
ISTANBUL (ChurchMilitant.com) – Turkey has issued a presidential decree ordering the conversion of the nation’s best-known Byzantine monastic church into a mosque.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan published the executive order Thursday sealing the fate of the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora, Istanbul, a month after Turkey’s top court delivered a unanimous verdict declaring the basilica of Hagia Sophia a mosque.
The decree, printed in the National Gazette, transfers “the administration of the Kariye Mosque [Chora Church] to the Directorate of Religious Affairs [Diyanet].”
In accordance with Article 35 of law No. 633 on the Presidency of Religious Affairs it orders the opening of the “mosque for [Islamic] worship.”
Erdoğan’s diktat overturns an earlier ruling of the Council of Ministers from April 23, 1945, which had directed the ancient monastic church to be used as a museum and warehouse.
The executive order formally implements the change in the church’s status, which was passed in Dec. 2019 by a decision of Turkey’s Council of State.
Pope Francis’ ‘Signal Failure’
Speaking to Church Militant, renowned Islamic historian Robert Spencer stressed that the conversion of Hagia Sophia and now the Chora Church into mosques demonstrated the “signal failure” of Pope Francis’ pact with the world’s highest-ranking Sunni Muslim leader Ahmad al-Tayyeb.
“Anyone could have predicted this monumental fiasco from the moment Pope Francis and al-Tayyeb signed the deal in February 2019,” Spencer asserted.
“The document on human fraternity that the pontiff signed with the Sheikh of al-Azhar and is now aggressively pushing upon the Catholic Church states that ‘the protection of places of worship — synagogues, churches and mosques — is a duty guaranteed by religions, human values, laws and international agreements,” Spencer quoted.
“The document did not and could not eradicate Islam’s supremacist doctrines and long tradition of the appropriation of the houses of worship of other faiths to demonstrate the victory and supremacy of Islam,” the author of 21 books on Islam explained.
“One cannot help but wonder if al-Tayyeb was having a little joke at Francis’ expense by including in the human fraternity document the stipulation that ‘every attempt to attack places of worship or threaten them by violent assaults, bombings or destruction is a deviation from the teachings of religions as well as a clear violation of international law,'” Spencer remarked.
Spencer noted that “any mention of the forcible seizure of the places of worship of one faith by the aggressive and supremacist adherents of another was conspicuous by its absence” in the human fraternity document.
“That is not condemned in the document — which is not to say that it would have made any difference if it had been. And now that appropriation proceeds apace,” he lamented….

Pope Francis is the anti-Urban II.
Instructive, highly, when an eleventh century person far better comprehended how Islam should be dealt with than a twenty-first century person, just coincidentally of course each a pontifex maximus.

Very unfortunately true.
What makes it even worse is that almost all of this “trouble” throughout the Western world was preventable.
Not a “acts of God” – totally man-made…

Not “Acts of God”, certainly, but God didn’t prevent it did he ?.

Unless he is wearing ear-plugs.
LB says
If we’re being honest here, historically speaking, the Catholics have never had a good relationship with the Orthodox. In fact, one might argue that the former has always hated the latter: the Sacking of Constantinople, selling cannons to the Turks which they used to conquer it, and just the general indifference to the suffering of the Orthodox Christians under muslim rule. There was never a time in history when a Catholic has shed his blood for an Orthodox.
That being said, the age old Catholic-Orthodox conflict probably has little to do with this current pope’s reaction to Hagia Sophia and Chora getting turned into mosques because he would probably react the same if the entire Vatican was turned into a giant mosque. Hell, he’d probably even happily welcome it! That’s how far gone to the left he and the majority of the Catholic clergy who blindly follow him are. This is the perfect time to quote Robert Spencer’s most quoted verse: “Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” — Matthew 15:14
Wellington says
LB: Historically, Catholic and Orthodox have gone after each other. A while ago here at JW I quoted George Ostrogorsky who wrote the highly praised “The History of the Byzantine State” to the effect that on the eve of the conquest in 1453 of Constantinople, Orthodox Christians said they would prefer Muslim rule over Catholic rule. Since I don’t have the work in front of me I can’t provide the exact quote I did before from Ostrogorsky’s magnum opus but it is telling how much animosity existed between these two branches of Christianity.
As an aside, I think the preference by the Orthodox for Muslim rule can be placed in the super dumb category. Bitter theological differences certainly existed between Catholic and Orthodox, and memories of the disastrous Fourth Crusade when Westerners took over Constantinople and environs for about half a century (1204-1261 I believe) lingered most definitely and understandably two centuries later, but no way Orthodox Christians desiring Muslim rule over Catholic rule made any sense. For the record and to be fair, sometimes the Catholic world also made no sense but this was nevertheless a terrible preference by the Orthodox. What ensued thereafter (for centuries) bitterly proves my point.
LB says
Not sure what you’re implying with that quote, but I’ll bite anyway.
With all due respect to the esteemed George Ostrogorsky whose works I haven’t read (but have heard of), I highly, HIGHLY doubt his claim that “on the eve of the conquest in 1453 of Constantinople, Orthodox Christians said they would prefer Muslim rule over Catholic rule.” Who said that? All Orthodox Christians unanimously or some religious figure? Seems too vague to me.
There is simply no way that could be true give the fact how brutal, relentless and thorough the muslim Turks were in slowly conquering every inch of the Byzantine Empire over the course of several centuries, killing their men and enslaving their women and children in the name of allah. The muslims made no attempt at hiding their lust for “blue-eyed fair-haired Hellenic maidens” and the Byzantines were well aware of that fact.
While it is no doubt true that there was lingering resentment in Constantinople citizens over the Catholic sacking of their city, I still have a hard time believing in that statement. Some may have said it in spite since it directly influenced their (the citizens of Constantinople) lives and because they’ve never experienced the muslim rule.
Either way, if by bringing that up you meant to say that the Orthodox hated the Catholics as well (and not just the other way around), that is indubitably true and I made no statement denying that fact. I simply alluded to the fact that the Catholics were more directly involved in the suffering of the Orthodox than the other way around. In fact, I struggle to recall even a single instance in history where the Orthodox were actively involved in causing harm to the Catholics. But then again, I am neither a historian nor a religious scholar, so if someone is willing to correct/educate me, feel free to do so.
Wellington says
LB: I am away from my home and don’t have my copy of Ostrogorsky’s History of the Byzantine State which is in my library. I can assure you, though, that he provided direct quotation (which I provided here at JW some two years ago I believe), not just a statement by himself, that Byzantines on the eve of conquest in 1453 said they would prefer Muslim over Catholic (Western) dominance.
Some Byzantine Emperors in the last hundred years or so were essentially vassals of the increasingly surrounding Turks. One Emperor gave his daughter away to the Ottoman leader as part of a peace agreement. If you get your own copy of Ostrogorsky’s work, you will find all this in it. And Ostogorsky’s tome is to this day considered the single finest one-volume work on the Byzantine Empire ever written and has been translated into many languages. I have the 1969 Rutgers University Press edition translated into English from the original German. It’s definitely a work anyone interested in late antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Middle East should have in their library.

Catholics and Orthodox have formally reconciled. Since this Pope is so often silent about persecution of Protestant and even Catholic Christians by Muslims as well, I doubt this has anything to do with any residual Catholic/Orthodox animus.
GreekEmpress says
Eastern Rite Catholics have also had their issues with the Roman Catholic Church. In 1889, Father Alexis Toth was sent from Europe to Minnesota to develop Eastern Rite parishes in the United States. He was treated badly by the Archbishop of Minneapolis, John Ireland, who was hostile to Eastern Rite churches as he thought they were too ethnic and not considered to be “Americanized” enough.
The Archbishop refused to give Father Toth permission to serve as a priest in Minneapolis.
Afraid that he and other Eastern Rite priests would be recalled to Europe and their parishioners absorbed into Roman Catholic congregations, he reached out to and joined the Russian Orthodox Church. Further demands by US bishops against Eastern Rite churches resulted in the conversion of 20,000 Eastern Rite Catholics to Russian Orthodoxy.
Father Toth was canonized as St. Alexis of Wilkes Barre in 1994 by the Orthodox Church in America, whose membership numbers are largely traceable to his efforts.
gravenimage says
Thanks for that information, GreekEmpress–troubling.
I still don’t think that the pope has been silent about the Chora Church purely because it is an eastern Church, though. He says nothing about most of this Islamic aggression against Christians.
I think he only spoke about Hagia Sophia–and then, only in passing–because it was too big to ignore.

When the Moors / Muslims invaded Spain they destroyed many churches and built Mosques on the site. Others they converted for Islamic use.
THE MYTHS OF THE ANDALUSIAN PARADISE by Dario Fernandez Morera explains and documents how the Muslims destroyed and enslaved the Spanish people. Jews and non Jews were forced to pay non Muslim fines.
Properties that were prime properties were stolen for their personal ownership.

Quote from The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise:
“As the Spanish Arabist Susana Calvo Capilla has pointed out, when Muslim chronicles mention churches, it is usually to gloat over their destruction or over their transformation into mosques aas part of the humbling of the infidels.”
It was policy of the Muslim rulers not only to destroy churches to demoralize the kafirs, but church art was destroyed and Christian books were made to disappear. There is no knowing how much of civilizational value has been lost as a result of Muslim conquests.

There isn’t any more significant sign indicative of the defeat and demise of radical Islam than the acceptance of Israel by the Arabs. An event That will usher a new era for Freedom in that part of the world, with a strong push toward religious liberty. Sooner or later, the Mediterranean region will have to adapt European standards to survive economically.
Strong indications point toward a preference for Arabs to integrate with the west rather than a wider Islamic entity with the despised Turks and Persians.

Tony, I hope you are right–but so far I see little sign that Arab Muslims are actually rejecting the horrors of their creed.

Many of us are not surprised by this “failure.” We are not surprised by anything er DOG wan does.
Many farmers who know their craft, use chicken waste as a powerful fertilizer. It’s powerful because too much will burn the crops instead of helping and smart farmers know this. They also know that dog waste is useless as a fertilizer. It’s just messy, smelly and carries a worm that causes “creeping corruption” or “creeping eruption.”
The thing the pope signed with moslims is much like dog waste. It’s messy, smelly, useless and causes the spread of creeping corruption.

The problem with the Pope and many other leaders of the west is that they don’t recognize the muslim strong horse theory. Muslims only respond to strength, when they see a weakness in their enemy they will always take advantage of it and press on. The more you give into the islamic ideology the more powerful they feel and so it’s no surprise to see Turkey turning another Christian church into a Mosque.
This should be a wakeup call to the west and Christians of the world as to what Islamic rule of the world will look like. But the response to this will be nothing, so Islam will continue their march towards world domination unchecked.

The completely utopian title of the “Document on Human Fraternity” is what struck me. Of course, it would be wonderful if mankind could reach that sort of harmony, but it certainly isn’t something that is on the Muslim agenda. The “Human Fraternity” title really sounds like a pie in the sky dream, where everyone is sitting around in wondrous peace and singing “Kumbaya”. A complete waste of time when it comes to islam. We are all supposed to cave in and submit to the thuggery of the violent Muslim scum. That’s the Muslim dream for humanity. The title of the document says plenty about the fantasy land that this dopey Pope inhabits when it comes to Islam and its evil nature.

tim gallagher wrote:
The completely utopian title of the “Document on Human Fraternity” is what struck me.
………………
You aren’t wrong, Tim. I decided to track this thing down, and see if it is really as “fraternal” as it claims to be. No surprise–not so much.
A few points:
In the name of innocent human life that God has forbidden to kill, affirming that whoever kills a person is like one who kills the whole of humanity, and that whoever saves a person is like one who saves the whole of humanity;
………………
“Innocent human life”–note that Muslims believe that it is only Muslims who are innocent–Infidels are not.
And the above is Qur’an 5:22–which is not a message to Muslims or to all mankind not to kill, but is only intended to chide Jews for supposedly not living up to their own moral standards.
More:
In the name of orphans, widows, refugees and those exiled from their homes and their countries; in the name of all victims of wars, persecution and injustice…
………………
This rhetoric is most often used by Muslims to falsely characterize the “Palestinians”–so this is aimed at smearing the Israelis.
More:
In the name of this fraternity torn apart by policies of extremism and division, by systems of unrestrained profit…
………………
This last is aimed at Capitalism–at nations with free trade–mostly the free West. Never mind that this characterization is quite false.
More:
We, who believe in God and in the final meeting with Him and His judgment, on the basis of our religious and moral responsibility, and through this Document, call upon ourselves, upon the leaders of the world as well as the architects of international policy and world economy, to work strenuously to spread the culture of tolerance and of living together in peace; to intervene at the earliest opportunity to stop the shedding of innocent blood and bring an end to wars, conflicts, environmental decay and the moral and cultural decline that the world is presently experiencing.
………………
In other words, the West is supposed to stop any defense against Islam. Then, “moral and cultural decline” means the freedom you find in the West.
More:
This Declaration, setting out from a profound consideration of our contemporary reality, valuing its successes and in solidarity with its suffering, disasters and calamities, believes firmly that among the most important causes of the crises of the modern world are a desensitized human conscience, a distancing from religious values and a prevailing individualism accompanied by materialistic philosophies that deify the human person and introduce worldly and material values in place of supreme and transcendental principles.
………………
Note that Jihad terror is *not* considered to be a problem, but just individualism–Islam *hates* and is opposed to individual rights.
More:
While recognizing the positive steps taken by our modern civilization in the fields of science, technology, medicine, industry and welfare, especially in developed countries, we wish to emphasize that, associated with such historic advancements, great and valued as they are, there exists both a moral deterioration that influences international action and a weakening of spiritual values and responsibility.
………………
Note the claim here–that freedom and innovation represent “moral deterioration”–with the unspoken corollary that the arid, backward Muslim world has no such moral problems.
More:
All this contributes to a general feeling of frustration, isolation and desperation leading many to fall either into a vortex of atheistic, agnostic or religious extremism, or into blind and fanatic extremism, which ultimately encourage forms of dependency and individual or collective self-destruction.
………………
Then, look at *this*–the claim that Jihad terror is the fault of the innovative West for creating medicine and better welfare for their citizens. How sick is this?
More:
History shows that religious extremism, national extremism and also intolerance have produced in the world, be it in the East or West, what might be referred to as signs of a “third world war being fought piecemeal”…
………………
In other words, Jihad terror and not wanting Jihad terror in your country (“intolerance”) are one and the same…
More:
We likewise affirm that major political crises, situations of injustice and lack of equitable distribution of natural resources – which only a rich minority benefit from, to the detriment of the majority of the peoples of the earth – have generated, and continue to generate, vast numbers of poor, infirm and deceased persons. This leads to catastrophic crises that various countries have fallen victim to despite their natural resources and the resourcefulness of young people which characterize these nations. In the face of such crises that result in the deaths of millions of children – wasted away from poverty and hunger – there is an unacceptable silence on the international level.
………………
In other words, give us more Jizya, you ‘filthy Infidels’.
And there is–both due to agricultural innovation and charity from the West, virtually no starvation in the world today, save where governments or terrorists are preventing food being brought in.
But they are blaming the West for not forking enough of her hard-earned wealth over to Mohammedans.
More:
We affirm also the importance of awakening religious awareness and the need to revive this awareness in the hearts of new generations through sound education and an adherence to moral values and upright religious teachings. In this way we can confront tendencies that are individualistic, selfish, conflicting, and also address radicalism and blind extremism in all its forms and expressions.
………………
No mention here of what horrors Islam *really* teaches, of course.
Then, the idea that Jihad terror is the fault of those who value the rights of the individual–just sickening.
More:
Moreover, we resolutely declare that religions must never incite war, hateful attitudes, hostility and extremism, nor must they incite violence or the shedding of blood. These tragic realities are the consequence of a deviation from religious teachings…
………………
Uh huh–never mind that just these horrors are the core of Islamic teaching.
More:
Freedom is a right of every person: each individual enjoys the freedom of belief, thought, expression and action. The pluralism and the diversity of religions, colour, sex, race and language are willed by God in His wisdom, through which He created human beings. This divine wisdom is the source from which the right to freedom of belief and the freedom to be different derives. Therefore, the fact that people are forced to adhere to a certain religion or culture must be rejected, as too the imposition of a cultural way of life that others do not accept;
………………
No mention that there are no such freedoms in Islam–nor in Abu Dhabi itself, which enforces “blasphemy” laws. People have been imprisoned there for daring to criticize Islam.
More:
Dialogue among believers means coming together in the vast space of spiritual, human and shared social values and, from here, transmitting the highest moral virtues that religions aim for. It also means avoiding unproductive discussions;
………………
What might those “unproductive discussions” entail? Likely any questioning or even mention of the horrors of Jihad and Shari’ah.
More:
Terrorism is deplorable and threatens the security of people, be they in the East or the West, the North or the South, and disseminates panic, terror and pessimism, but this is not due to religion, even when terrorists instrumentalize it. It is due, rather, to an accumulation of incorrect interpretations of religious texts and to policies linked to hunger, poverty, injustice, oppression and pride.
………………
If these creeps *really* believed this, they would be talking to their own Jihadi coreligionists, rather than spouting Taqiyya at Christians.
More:
Good relations between East and West are indisputably necessary for both. They must not be neglected, so that each can be enriched by the other’s culture through fruitful exchange and dialogue. The West can discover in the East remedies for those spiritual and religious maladies that are caused by a prevailing materialism. And the East can find in the West many elements that can help free it from weakness, division, conflict and scientific, technical and cultural decline.
………………
In what possible way are we “enriched” through barbaric Islamic culture being imposed on us?
More:
It is an essential requirement to recognize the right of women to education and employment, and to recognize their freedom to exercise their own political rights. Moreover, efforts must be made to free women from historical and social conditioning that runs contrary to the principles of their faith and dignity.
………………
In other words, preventing forced veiling, child and forced marriage, and the other oppression of Islam is not allowing Muslim women to be free from “social conditioning” that runs counter to the horrors of Islam. Let *that* sink in.
More:
It is also necessary to protect women from sexual exploitation and from being treated as merchandise or objects of pleasure or financial gain. Accordingly, an end must be brought to all those inhuman and vulgar practices that denigrate the dignity of women. Efforts must be made to modify those laws that prevent women from fully enjoying their rights;
………………
This basically means banning Victoria’s Secret ads because Muslims find them offensive. No such problems with Islamic oppression, of course.

Brilliant work, gravenimage, in dissecting this document, which is a load of bullshit. You certainly did some hard work in going through the document and I agree with every point you make about this load of rubbish. I like the bit about how the Declaration results from a “profound consideration” of our contemporary world, blah, blah. I think it is full of utter garbage as you point out so well, rather than anything “profound”. To me, islam is the absolute opposite of Christianity. Islam is sheer evil in so many ways. Amongst the other things wrong in this document, something that I notice is how the document says how important it is to have a religious belief, which I think might be part of the way the Catholic Church gets fooled by Islam. I think religious people, such the clergy in the church, think that loss of religious faith is terrible and, thus, Muslims, because they are religious, are OK in some way. These Church people seem to mainly worry about people’s loss of faith. I am a Christian believer myself, but, when you see what a vile god Islam has, and how evil the content of Islam is (satanic I’d say) then a person is better off having no religious faith at all than being a believer in Islam’s evil version of religion. I would take Rita Panahi, a commentator here in Australia, who is an atheist, brought up as a Muslim, any day over a religious Muslim. Thanks for doing all that work. I can’t excuse this Pope and his fellow travellers for their imbecilic attitude to Islam. They are supposed to call out evil and evil is what islam is. The Pope should say that loudly and clearly. islam is Christianity’s enemy, always has been and always will be.
