Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi “has been sentenced to a minimum of 55 years in jail for the murder of 22 people in the Manchester Arena bombing.”
The judge added: “The motivation for them was to advance the ideology of Islamism, a matter distinct to and abhorrent to the vast majority for those who follow the Islamic faith.”
The fact that violence against unbelievers is among the teachings of normative Islam has never been adequately confronted in the West. While it is true that “the vast majority for those who follow the Islamic faith” will never commit atrocities in the name of their faith, most of these peaceful Muslims are reluctant to come out openly and denounce the jihadis. This is because they recognize that warfare against disbelievers is a tenet of the Qur’an and Sunnah, and that consequently they themselves could be targeted for standing against the jihadis. Also:
Abedi could not be given a whole-life sentence, according to the judge and prosecutors, as Labour era legislation which the Conservatives have not changed prohibits such sentences for convicts under the age of 21 at the time of their crimes, and Abedi was a few months shy of his 21st birthday when the Manchester bombing took place.
Abedi’s crime is not only mass murder; it is a war crime, which is very different in character and motivation. He and others like him are jihadis who are waging war against Western countries. Yet little or nothing is being done to counter the Salafi doctrine that motivated him. Officials consider it “Islamophobic” to note the obvious fact that hatred of disbelievers and war against them is a normative Islamic tenet. The infamous Islamic State caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was “the son of a pious Sunni family from the Iraqi district of Samarra”; he “parlayed religious fervor, hatred of nonbelievers,” which is found abundantly in the Hadith as well as in the Quran. While not every Muslim follows these tenets, enough do to create national security problems in the West, as well as a genocide of Christians in Africa and the Middle East.
“Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi sentenced to minimum of 55 years in jail,” ITV News, August 20, 2020:
Hashem Abedi has been sentenced to a minimum of 55 years in jail for the murder of 22 people in the Manchester Arena bombing.
Abedi refused to attend the courtroom to face his verdict, as judge, Mr Justice Jeremy Baker, handed him 24 life sentences for organising the Manchester Arena bomb plot – adding he “may never be released.”
The 23-year-old who was born and raised in Manchester, was accused of showing “contempt” to the families of those he and his suicide bomber brother Salman Abedi killed more than three years earlier by not coming into the dock.
Sentencing him on Thursday afternoon, the judge said: “Although Salman Abedi was directly responsible, it was clear the defendant took an integral part in the planning.”
The judge added: “The motivation for them was to advance the ideology of Islamism, a matter distinct to and abhorrent to the vast majority for those who follow the Islamic faith.
“The defendant and his brother were equally culpable for the deaths and injuries caused.
“The stark reality is that these were atrocious crimes, large in their scale, deadly in their intent, and appalling in their consequences….

For sure your remarks and observance is great and discerningly accurate. The judge’s hair-splitting distinction islam … islamism is just a naive pretense in sophistication. |He is following the modern trend / fashion to give light sentences to muslim criminals, cover up evidence, mental illness excuses, youth exuberance, radicalized by someone else.
Yes they are radicalized by the abundance of jizya, and luxury hotels allotted to jihadis.

I’m sorry, but if a theory seems plausible on the surface, but upon deeper examination it implies nonsense, then it necessarily has to be completely disregarded.
Those people who accept the theory knowing full well that it promotes murder, rape, robbery and enslavement are simply insincere fools; and the devotion of a fool is meaningless.
They may not partake in the evil deeds, but they support it, and pass it on to the next generation of monsters. In this way their lives too are ruined by association with the evil.

That ‘vast majority of those who follow the Islamic faith’, those supposedly law-abiding and peace-loving citizens, would be the same ‘vast majority’ who, after the Paris attacks of 2015 whick killed almost 140 innocent people. sheltered the terrorists and hid them from police for months. No interest in justice for the innocent victims, but solidarity with evil murderers – and based purely on their shared ‘religion’.

Dear ”out of touch” Judge. Islamism is pure unadulterated Islam. WAKE UP.
Michael Copeland says
“the ideology of Islamism, a matter distinct to and abhorrent to the vast majority for those who follow the Islamic faith”, said the judge.
Distinct? Abhorrent? How does he know?
Has there been a survey of “the vast majority”? No.
How does “Islamism” differ from Islam? Can the judge identify the differences?
English judges receive no training in Islamic law. In consequence they express assumptions which are not backed by data. Some instruction in Islamic law would be very useful to the legal profession. It is needed.

100% true.
May I also add that they receive no *accurate* training in islamic law.
Still, somehow, they seem to feel that they know a lot about islam. After all, they watch the BBC.
And therein lies the problem…

There have in fact been surveys, and the results contradict the judge’s assertion. In most countries that have Muslim majorities, most Muslims demand Sharia:
https://www.pewforum.org/2013/04/30/the-worlds-muslims-religion-politics-society-beliefs-about-sharia/
Killing blasphers and other perceived ‘enemies of Islam’ is normative Islam.
I could not find the full opinion of the court, but I suspect very strongly that the judge had no citations and no evidence to support the false assertion, and merely recited it as a commonplace.

Poetry?

Justice Jeremy Baker is merely expressing his wishful thinking by stating as FACT that ‘most Muslims’ abhor Islamism. (At least the judge knows the term ‘Islamism’, unlike many other judges.) However, the judge apparently believes that individual Muslims have the right to make up their own version of Islam. They have no such right. The ‘consensus’ of Islamic scholars from the 12th century is the final codification of Islam.
Father Henri Boulad SJ (a life-long student of Islamism) disagreed with the separation of Islamism from Islam and concluded that:
‘Islamism is not a caricature, nor a counterfeit, nor a heresy, nor a fringe or atypical phenomenon versus classical, orthodox, Sunnite Islam.
To the contrary, I think Islamism is naked Islam, Islam without a mask and without paint, Islam perfectly consistent and true to itself, an Islam that has the courage and lucidity to go all the way to its ultimate conclusions and final implications.
Islamism is Islam in all its logic and in all its rigour. Islamism is present in Islam as the chick is present in the egg, as the fruit is present in the flower and as the tree is present in the seed.
But what is Islamism?
Islamism is political Islam, the bearer of a project for a model society and whose aim is to establish a theocratic state based on Sharia, the only legitimate law—since it is divine—since it was revealed and enshrined in the Koran and Sunna—it’s a law that applies to everything.
Here is an all-inclusive and all-encompassing project, one that is total, totalizing and totalitarian.”
I hope the learned judge will read the above comments. They are vital to a correct interpretation.

I admire Robert Spencer for his courage, scholarship about Islam and determination to defeat the root cause of violence and discrimination in it, evidently a threat to the West. I believe from the bottom of my heart this is a sacred cause.
In Meccan verse 10:94, the Koran emphatically and clearly advises Muhammad to seek truth about God in Judaism and Christianity. In other verses, it stresses that Islam is no different than the faith of Israel. It speaks of Jesus, the healer who raised people from the dead, and who will return to judge humanity at the end of time.I do not understand why Robert does not shed light on the commonalities Islam, “the religious tradition”, shares with Judaism and Christianity. I also believe it is futile, a waste of time, to deconstruct a 1400 year old “tradition”.
By contrast, The verses of Medina, that came later, when the Mos’Haf of Caliph Osman was gathered ( which Muslims agree to deviate from the Koran of Muhammad ) at a period of history characterized by Arab conquest and colonialism, was made to justify, rationalize and encourage a military and political endeavor.
I think it is crucial in order to solve this “Islamic” ENIGMA, is to Define that age old big “ISLAMIC PARADOX”. The Koran being a PENDULUM between a theology and political dogma, aka political Islam.
Political Islam is vicious, cruel and savage. To say it is discriminatory is an understatement. To defeat it, takes a battle at all levels: intellectual, social, legal, economic, political, and if necessary, military ( going on in Afghanistan and Iraq). Political Islam is a fair game – Because it is POLITICAL- it has nothing to do with religion.
Robert says: { The fact that violence against unbelievers is among the teachings of normative Islam has never been adequately confronted in the West } which I agree with. The inadequacy comes from the fact that our military response alone is NOT enough. A defensive military response without a policy is like putting the carriage in front of the horse. One drop of American blood is too much, too many and too precious to be wasted on a failed strategy. That is why we are caught in 2 open ended wars. The absence of a clear, well defined policy from our part to abolish political Islam, with all its social, political and military implications. A policy that needs to be formulated first then fervently adopted by all western nations, in the face of all Islamic nations. At the same time giving them the signal That we will continue to respect the Islamic ”religious tradition”, like the Pope is doing.
