Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

‘Infidel’: At Last, a Film That Deals Realistically with Islamic Terrorism

Oct 7, 2020 5:00 pm By Robert Spencer 59 Comments

My latest in PJ Media:

It is a staple of the Muslim victimhood industry to complain that Hollywood frequently features Muslim terrorist villains, and seldom depicts Muslims as anything other than terrorists. Reality is just the opposite: can you think of even one major motion picture that featured Islamic terrorists as the villains? In a typical instance, Tom Clancy’s The Sum of All Fears, jihadis were the villains, but when the book was made into a movie, the villains were changed to neo-Nazis. Moviemakers routinely shy away from depicting the grim reality of jihad violence and Sharia oppression of women and others. But not Cyrus Nowrasteh.

Nowrasteh, who gave us the eye-opening and heart-rending 2009 film The Stoning of Soraya M., which focused on an honor killing, has written, directed, and produced the new movie Infidel, starring Jim Caviezel, Claudia Karvan, and Hal Ozsan. Infidel is as startling, on many levels, as it is gripping. Caviezel plays a Christian blogger who is kidnapped by a Hizballah cell (headed up by a cheerfully villainous and thoroughly engaging Ozsan) and taken to Iran.

That this is the storyline is in itself remarkable. Were Infidel the production of virtually any director besides Nowrasteh, Caviezel’s Christian character Doug Rawlins would turn out to be stupid, evil, or both, while Ozsan’s Ramzi, even while being a Hizballah kidnapper, would be depicted as wise, noble, or even heroic. Muslims are victims of Islamophobic, racist, redneck American yahoos — that’s the general Hollywood narrative, played out in innumerable films.

Infidel instead opts to be more realistic, recalling actual events that seldom gain Hollywood’s notice, such as the 1987 kidnapping of journalist Charles Glass by Hizballah in Lebanon. Infidel unflinchingly portrays the gleeful brutality and inhumanity of Rawlins’ captors, as well as his own struggles to maintain his Christian faith amid torture and isolation. Amid all this, the film’s realism is thoroughgoing: once the movie’s perspective was established, it was refreshing to see Caviezel portray Rawlins as alternately angry, afraid, and confused, rather than as a plaster saint, above the fray and singing hymns even as he is being beaten and verbally abused.

There is much more. Read the rest here.

It’s about time someone made a film which portrays the truth about Islamic terrorism.
Now we wait for the law suits to be lodged by organizations like CAIR claiming discrimination, Islamophobia etc. and of course the back lash from individuals like Omar and her ilk.
Will be very interested to see the film when I can get my hands on it.

My wife and I saw the film and it is great. This is a real thriller. The evil that is depicted in the movie seems very real. The deception that Islam teaches is acceptable to ‘non believers’ is shown in a way that I have no doubt is going on in the world today. We saw an interview with the director and Caviezel where it was told the director was a Muslim when they filmed The Stoning of S movie but had a major conversion and is an ‘Infidel’ now. PTL

Jim Caviezel is a very courageous man who also stands up for his Catholic Faith while lamenting and rightly criticizing Church leaders, including the Pope, who should know better when it comes to Islam and other things. And despite being oft-criticized by Church leaders, Caviezel will not tuck his tail between his legs and cowardly leave the Church established by and guided by Christ until the end of time. He fights the good and honorable fight from within and he is an inspiration to many as well as a reminder of what the Catholic Church is really all about. May God continue to bless him and his work, which, by the way, will also include soon reprising his role as Jesus in the upcoming Gibson film that deals with the aftermath and actions of Jesus after His resurrection. Probably a few years away from actually being filmed and released, but definitely in the works.

When Cavizel “stands up for the Catholic faith”, do you mean, he stands up for his Christian faith ? If so, why don’t you say so ? Or is Catholicism simply more important than Christianity ? Maybe you think Catholicism IS Christianity.

Maybe, the real question is, can a devout Roman Catholic reject the church’s teaching on matters of Faith and Morals, and still be a “devout Roman Catholic?”

Some examples would be Birth Control, Abortion, Divorce & Remarriage.

The “church” of Yeshua HaMashiach is NOT a denomination, it is the collective body of those who have truly been born again, and have accepted Yeshua HaMashiach as their Lord and Savior.

Staying in the Roman Catholic Church, at this juncture in history, is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Yeshua’s chief adversaries were the Jewish religious leaders, the Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes, most of whom were primarily defending their turf (traditions) along with appeasing the Roman rulers so they could stay in power. The quest for power, money and control is as prevalent now as it was during the time of Yeshua HaMashiach.

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
      Matthew 23:1-3

The Jewish people completely understood what Yeshua was teaching. When the scribes and the Pharisees were on the seat of Moses, they only read from the Scriptures, there wasn’t any personal commentary. The scribe or Pharisee opened the scroll, read the prescribed text, when finished, rolled up the scroll and stepped off the seat of Moses. In other words, they only spoke the Word of God. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The body of those born again through Baptism of water and the Spirit, sealed in the Spirit and strengthened by Confirmation, who eat the Body and Blood of Jesus, who have their sins bound and loosed by the successors of the Apostles, who go to Mass with priests ordained by bishops who are direct successors of the Apostles because of the laying on of hands from man to man down the ages….

Well, then, it’s hard to be part of the Body unless you’re Catholic, Orthodox, etc. Possible through the grace of God, but requires a lot of disregard and utter ignorance of the Sacraments and Church established by Jesus Christ.

        Hello curious George. You wrote:

I couldn’t agree more with you on this. I remember considering messianic congregations as an appealing option for a church of Christ; however, apostolic succession is too important to ignore it or throw it apart. (Matthew 16:19, John 20:23).
It’s clear that there is only one Church of Christ and not several like suburbanbanshee is trying to put it (catholic, orthodox, etc).
To the rest: no priest or bishop can contradict Canon law within the popist church, and if you openly criticize the pope or contradict him you are liable of sin, maybe not a mortal sin, but still a sin. Otherwise the following canon wouldn’t make any sense:
Can. 752 Although not an assent of faith, a religious submission of the intellect and will must be given to a doctrine which the Supreme Pontiff or the college of bishops declares concerning faith or morals when they exercise the authentic magisterium, even if they do not intend to proclaim it by definitive act; therefore, the Christian faithful are to take care to avoid those things which do not agree with it.

    …………….

    This sounds amazing!

I have recommended the devastating “Stoning of Soraya M.” many times, despite its tending to whitewash Islam itself.

Cyrus Nowrasteh also wrote the decent “Path to 9/11”, although it probably put too much blame on the Clinton administration. He is Baha’i.

Jim Caviezel also played the Western journalist in “Soraya”, as well, famously, Jesus in 2004’s “The Passion of the Christ”.

I look forward to seeing “Infidel”.

A certain industry in Caliphornia needs help in these trying times. Imagine the amount of employment a 2-parter x3-hour classic docu-drama will generate.

        …………………………..

The claim that Jihadists kidnapping journalists and bloggers is “fantasy” is ludicrous. Here are just a few cases:

        “2006 Fox journalists kidnapping”

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Fox_journalists_kidnapping

Steve Centanni and cameraman Olaf Wiig were kidnapped by the Holy Jihad Brigades in Gaza, and not set free until forced to convert to Islam at gunpoint.

Then, journalist Daniel Pearl as beheaded by Jihadists in 2002:

“U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl is dead, officials confirm”

        https://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/south/02/21/missing.reporter/index.html

Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena as kidnapped in Iraq in 2005, as as Silvia Romano in Somalia in 2018. Both were only released after converting to Islam.

BBC journalist Alan Johnson was kidnapped in Gaza in 2007 by the Army of Islam. They repeatedly threatened to murder him, and at one point horrified people by claiming they had done so.

Several free speech bloggers have been kidnapped in Pakistan; some murdered.

I could go on, but it is clear that Sabri S. calling this “fantasy” is a lie.

The claim that opposing Jihadists kidnapping and threatening journalists and bloggers is “anti-Muslim” is only the case if Sabri S. is saying that all Muslims support this. But then, this is just the sort of thing that the “Prophet” Muhammed himself did.

If memory serves, Caviezel many years ago had a vision of some sort in which God or Jesus asked him to be an actor. Because of that, Caviezel says that he has never thought of his acting career in the usual way, but rather as part of the mission that he was given in that vision. For Caviezel, acting seems to be part of some serious Christian destiny.

The story was compelling and Caviezel – and the other actors – fleshed the characters out well. No cardboard cutouts in this movie. You really got to see the mindset of the Islamist through the behavior of the people involved, as well as the reality of both the Christian revival and the doubt towards the regime by the people in the street. Well done.
