— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) November 18, 2020
Omar was coming to the support of the radical Leftist Georgia Senate candidate Raphael Warnock, who says explicitly that one cannot serve God and the military in the video embedded in the tweet. While there was a controversy in the early days of Christianity about whether a Christian could serve in the military of the Roman Empire, it was settled centuries ago, and no Christian sect with the exception of the small groups that are strictly pacifist has ever said that it was un-Christian to serve in the U.S. military. This is yet another indication of where Ilhan Omar’s sentiments truly lie, for were her words heeded and Christians streamed out of the military of this country, our armed forces and the country as a whole would be drastically weakened. Apparently that is what she wants.

Seriously, would Jesus encourage Christians to join the army and wage wars? is that in line with Christian doctrine?
If it is, then Christianity allows Christians to engage in wars of conquests (such as the colonial wars of the past centuries)
I appreciate anyone who can have an honest and respectful discussion about this without getting defensive, throwing insults or insinuations.

Illogical. One does not necessarily flow from the other.
ELI says
Not sure what you mean but OK.
Maybe here is a better question, can I be a good Christian and still kill whoever my country deems to be an enemy soldier?
Kangi_iyotaka says
Serving in the military does not mean you’re going to kill anybody. The vast majority of service members have never even fired their weapon anywhere but the range. Even in Iraq, during the good old days of 2006 and 2007 during the surge, 90% of the troops were (as ever) making food, dealing with pay, dealing with paperwork, making Powerpoint slides, etc. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of the military is “support,” not trigger-pulling infantrymen.
If you can’t kill, don’t go combat arms, and your chances of killing, while not zero, are tiny.
KHarn says
Christianity does not discourage self-defense. The same holds for national defense.
Westman says
“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Jesus never made a statement discouraging service in the military and, according to scripture, healed the ear of a Roman soldier, obviously not blaming him for the situation.
Jesus was not a complete pacifist, as there is an account of his driving money changers from the temple grounds with a whip. He seemed to understand both the need for compassion and the need for defense.
Accepting the benefits of nation while freeloading on its defense will ultimately lead to its demise. The current practice of a professional army can only lead to misuse and lack of patriotism among the youth of a nation. A wise nation would require all of the youth to make an investment in their country through service of various kinds, creating values to be willingly defended.
Islam is strong because it demands a sacrifice every single day from its adherents; to an excessive extent that it was left behind by science and technology. The West has done the opposite, putting all its efforts into advancement while reducing the competent citizen’s service to taxes and the uncompetitive citizen to dependency.
Paul Wheeler says
Since when is battery on someone who has not touched, threatened or otherwise engaged you “defense”????
Today the Lord would rightly have been arrested for disturbing the peace and probably offenses against property as well.
Wellington says
ELI: Christian thinkers from very early on struggled with an arguably inherent pacifism found in the New Testament and how to reconcile that with the waging of war. The fact that over the centuries numerous Christian sects have arisen which are pacifist, for instance the Quakers and the Amish, testifies to this pacifist sentiment often expressed in the New Testament.
What occurred was the development of the “just war” doctrine. Just as a Christian has the right to defend their family if threatened with great harm or death, so does a polity like the nation state have the right to defend its existence. After all, Christianity was never meant to be a suicide pact. But the waging of war must be in the name of a just cause.
Yet another problem has confronted Christian thinkers over the centuries and that is the matter of free enterprise and the profit motive. At first reading, it often seems that various parts of the New Testament would argue for a kind of communal life style with personal property a negative, but Jesus of Nazareth did not mean for people to be unfree and, as Thomas Jefferson observed, where there is no private property there is no liberty—and I see nothing in the New Testament that makes it an enemy of liberty (contra numerous Koranic passages, an example being death for apostasy {Sura 4:89}).
Capitalism, as with war, are two “endeavors” I think possible to reconcile with Christian doctrine but each must be engaged in with a very well reasoned ethical sense. It’s a close call but a manageable one I believe. Besides, Jesus did say to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s.
BTW, I write all this as the completely non-religious person that I am, but I have no doubt whatsoever that Christianity is a far superior religion to Islam and the entire world would be far better off if every Muslim became a Christian. Christianity is not a menace to freedom. Islam is.
Hope this helps. If you would like to respond, I would welcome such a response.

Agree with your comment, Wellington. I would like to add that there are different types of capitalism, and some varieties of capitalism seem rather harmonious with Christianity. Conventional capitalism does conflict with Christianity in a number of respects. Socialism, however, does not solve those problems and indeed usually makes them worse. I would argue that what has been called “steward-owned capitalism” meshes fairly well with Christianity, and also works better than conventional capitalism, is more prosperous, more innovative, shares wealth more evenly, and even maintains a sharper and stronger separation between state and economy than does conventional capitalism. Conventional capitalism actually tends to call forth a creeping socialism in response. We have seen this creeping socialism in the US for nearly a century now, and that creep has been a response to certain flaws of conventional capitalism.
If memory serves, Denmark has a lot of steward-owned for-profit corporations. The Danish stock market is I think mainly steward-owned companies. Basically, steward-ownership means a non-profit foundation owns a for-profit company. This ownership structure generally profoundly changes the tenor of capitalism by spreading wealth more evenly without undermining innovation, prosperity, or freedom. Steward-owned capitalism, more than conventional capitalism, functions as a bulwark against socialism and statism. Steward-owned capitalism is a pretty successful attempt to reconcile individualism, freedom, and decentralization with a communal impulse in an economic life independent of the state.

Eduardo, Capitalism not only raises the most people out of poverty, but the more Capitalist a nation, generally, the more charitiable her people. The West is the most charitable part of the world by far, and Americans, even when adjusted for income, are the most charitable of all people.

Jesus said “Love one another.” Neither Omar nor Warnock seem to be capable of love.
Paul Wheeler says
“Besides, Jesus did say to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s.”
Probably fewer New Testament verses are more severely misunderstood by Christians and non-Christians alike.
That verse must be understood in the context of Roman-occupied Judea in the first century A.D. Additionally, it must be understood in a context of Judaism of that time as well.
A much earlier verse clarifies Jesus’s meaning. He well knew that any statement that appeared to challenge Roman imperial authority was sedition (which he was eventually tried and executed for by the Romans. The Romans didn’t care if He blasphemed but they did care if He was a rebel.
The earlier verse is Psalm 24, verse 1. It reads: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.
The world and all its people belong to him.”
To a Gentile, Jesus seems to be saying that there is a heavenly ruler and an earthly one. Both can be obeyed.
To an observant Jew, which He was, Jesus’s answer is seditious. Psalm 24:1 explicitly denies Caesar or any earthly ruler dominion over the world, which belongs to Yahweh .and Him alone Caesar cannot be obeyed if obeying him results in disobeying Yahweh.
As Christianity evolved during the first three centuries of its existence, the ambiguity of Jesus’s reply was a handy way for Christian apologists to deny that there was a fundamental schism between Caesar and God. I suspect that early Jewish converts to the new religion knew very well that Jesus had engaged in very Aesopian language – language worthy of a rabbi or lawyer. As more and more pagans entered the church, however, I am pretty sure that the seditious nuance to Jesus’s words was lost, with the result that today, most Christians and non-Christians usually misunderstand their true meaning.
And Representative Omar can take refuge in practicing taqiyya (even though that’s a Shia heretic term, it’s the one most of us know.)
Dan says
We need to know what you define as “Wars of Conquest.”
The Crusades for example, have been twisted into a “War of Conquest” when the truth is, they were only about a dozen campaigns, spaced a little over a hundred years, in response to about six CENTURIES of Muslim aggression.
You do, I hope, know that Islam had taken over ALL of Northern Africa, much of Spain, and had pushed into many parts of Europe BY THE SWORD, not by “words” or persuasion.
That is, by any and all definitions, colonialism, which Islam has yet to accept ANY responsibility for, and it is CURRENT engaged in another War of Conquest, its sword this time honed on the stone of Political Correctness.
St. Thomas Aquinas defended the use of force for “legitimate defense of persons and societies”: “Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefor it is legitimate to insist upon respect for one’s own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder, even if he is forced to deal a lethal blow: ‘If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful… Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one’s own life than of another’s.”
Nor are we expected – or even permitted – to leave innocent third parties defenseless at the hands of violent aggressors.
“Legitimate defense can be not only a right, but a GRAVE DUTY for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm.” We are called to use force, if need be at the risk of our own lives, to protect others.
Now from MY point of view – and I am in no way whatsoever saying it’s “All America and Israel’s fault because I stand 100% behind both countries – but IF the Muslims were attacking ONLY America and Israel, since their twisted ideologue calls these two countries the Great and Little Satan, at least Muslims who TRULY believed that, logically, one could see how their minds justify their actions against these two countries.
But Muslims don’t restrict their attacks to these two opponents.
In fact, they get their butts kicked so hard and so often by America and Israel, that they say, “Well if we can’t best of them so, let’s just go slaughter and rape, and terrorize EVERYBODY ELSE, and then use political correctness to propagandize the world into blaming America and Israel.
There is NOTHING just in such actions, which are basically the adult actions of a spoiled brat who was never properly disiplined as a child; they only know “Destroy until I get my way.”
And you can’t restrict “Wars of Conquest” only to Christian nations.
Every other race, creed, and religion; Muslims, Africans, Asians, Aztecs, Mayans, Mongols, Chinese, Native Americans Indians, India’s Indians, you name it, they’ve ALL started/engaged in wars of conquest and aggression.
Further still, every single solitary race, creed, religion and culture has had slaves.
MANY, of them, those still existing at least, STILL DO have slaves, and for the most part, (I’ve lived all over the world) of the societies that even have laws against slavery, only Western cultures really do anything to enforce them.

Dan, just as a reminder: Crusades did harm Orthodox Christian communities, including killing, raping, looting and robbing some of them. I understand that it was not their main purpose but still… Some popes have recently returned relics stolen from that time.
Regarding Thomas Aquinas, he went a little too far: he held that heresy should be punished by death, in ST II:II 11:3, an opinion now repudiated by the popeists, but for many years held and practiced. He also maintained the intellectual inferiority of women and their subjection to men on that account (ST I:92:1). He also said masters have the right to strike their slaves to punish them. (ST II:II 65:2).
Dan says
There are bad apples in every group, and back then EVERYBODY was meaner.
But WE have changed, while many of these other societies HAVE NOT.
I spent almost two years in several Muslim countries, and ALL of them practice slavery.
Once the local men got to know me a bit, their guards would slip, and they’d try to “explain” to me, the West is so messed up because we don’t beat our women, and corruption is so “SYSTEMIC” in their culture, they even have NAMES for it.
“Bachsheeh” is name in most Muslim countries, and in such places, India being one although it’s not called that there, people pay upwards of FIFTY THOUSAND dollars to get any kind of government position, because they KNOW they’ll make far more than that in bribes per year.
Sailing into most countries, it was usually 50 to a 100 bucks for permits and visas, and maybe a couple hours work.
In India, it was 3 days and FIFTEEN HUNDRED dollars, because every clerk, every signature, every rubber stamp, every sheet of paper, cost $5 here, and $5 there, and $20 here, and $20 there.
A couple clerks got to scrapping right in front of us, because one thought the other got a higher bribe than she should have, and then kept demanding we return to her desk to do more paperwork, which got the first one pissed off, and asking for more.
They don’t even try to hide it, (Which we at least have the (lack of) integrity to do.
We also DON’T punish hearsay with death.
And our soldiers are not running around raping and pillaging.
Bad apples do NOT count because, again, every single society has them.
The difference between us and them, is we are better behaved than our ancestors, because they provided a decent foundation to build upon.
Christianity and Judaism say we’re not supposed to do that kind of stuff, so that is what we strive for.
Islam, and cultures, say it’s okay to lie, cheat, rape and kill, so why are we surprised when THAT is what many of THEM strive for?

“Seriously,” ELI,
Just war doctrine has a long history within Christianity. Goes back to St. Augustine at least. Christianity distinguishes between the kingdom of God and the realm of Caesar. Jesus tells Caesar that “if my kingdom were of this world, my followers would have fought you. But my kingdom is not of this world.” The key distinction seems to be that Christians may not use force to spread Christianity, but a government, leaving aside religious motivations, may use force for self-defense. So the idea of Christian jihadists is not something justified by the teachings of JC, but a Christian may also be a soldier defending a state and its peoples.
eduardo odraude says
Caesar in my 4:37 pm comment above is of course intended metaphorically: Jesus tells Pontius Pilate, representative of Caesar, that the reason Jesus’ followers did not fight is that “my kingdom is not of this world.”
THX 1138 says
You are correct, nothing in the New Testament, no words spoken by Jesus Christ condone or encourage going to war. It seems just the opposite, turn the other cheek, love your neighbor as yourself, my kingdom is not of this earth, etc.
But Christianity is open to interpretation, ironically wars have been fought between different Christians of different sects over doctrine and interpretation. But the fact still stands that the overriding message of Jesus Christ, the essential purpose why Jesus Christ came to earth was to ask his followers to renounce the earth and practice self-sacrifice and unconditional love for others.
JamesC. says
STM that the Kingdom Jesus preached entails abstention from military service. What later, Christian generations thought or did, cannot be an authority on the matter.n
That raises the problem of what to do when someone like Hitler, Stalin, or Mao invades. It would be very selfish of Christians in country X to ignore the plight of Christians – or of anyone ! – in invaded country Y. That is why I believe that, by and large, WW2 qualifies as a just and necessary war.
I think the Teaching of Jesus, later adopted by the Church Universal, contains or presupposes a number of elements that can be emphasised in such a way as to emphasise or negate other elements in His Teaching. Hence perhaps the diversity of beliefs within Churches, as well as the diversity of Churches.
I don’t think the Sermon on the Mount was ever intended to be an answer to international problems. I think it was intended for Second Temple Palestinian Jews, and that its meaning changed by its being adopted by international Christianjty, and then canonised as Scripture for the international, universal Christian Church.

There are two Scriptures she might have quoted to her by whoever told her to write “Mathews”…there is only One Mathew, adulterer.
One is Psalms 50: 16 ” But God will say to the wicked:
“What right do you have to relate my regulations+
Or to speak about my covenant?”
The Second one is Revelation 21:8 “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
This rep for the filthiest cult on earth turns my stomach. She’s a snake. He also said, that will be “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of the Heavens.” And He told a rich young ruler to “sell all your belongings and follow me.”
Jesus knew that His people would not fully understand, and be always capable of seeing how to apply His words. (The Bible tells us that He told His apostles they would not understand everything He had taught them.) But, He expects all of us to try to be as He was and as He would be if on earth as a Man today.
All of us will get some of it wrong as we are all imperfect. But, remember, it’s what’s in the heart of a person that matters with Him and our Holy Father in Heaven. God and His Son can, and do, read what’s in the heart of a person.
Our first loyalty should always be to God. He will help us in the rest of what we need to do if we put Him first.
As Jesus said, “Seek first, the Kingdom and all these other things will be added to you.”

Mathews was right when he said no one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other etc. Normally only a talented double agent, can serve both masters at the same time. But, what about Ilhan Omar herself? Doesn’t she serve two masters? Isn’t she very hypocritical to keep on staying in a country she despises? Serving a bunch of “unbelievers”, instead of going home, to her country of origin, where Allah is everywhere; even in places he is not expected to be? Why should Americans trust her? On what basis? This is a disgrace and shameful. Though, the case can be explained when we look a bit further. The invisible people behind her (and her body from Georgia) don’t believe in God, nor Allah or any ideology. They only believe in the divine power of MONEY, and are led by the Catechism of Wall Street. They adopted the ancient Roman adage: divide and rule. Backing people like Ilhan Omar, her squad, BLM and minorities against (Republican) white Americans, suit their purposes and needs. The whole reminds me a discussion I had once with a Jewish acquaintance on the former Socialist Dutch minister of finance, Wouter Bos, and his relation to EU, and ECB (European Central Bank). He said: Wouter Bos has no real trust in the ECB, and thinks the EU is a big bullshit that serves only Go-Getters. But he fakes a deep devotion to create himself good credentials for the future …after the elections. Uncle Benny doesn’t believe in God and regards every form of religion as primitive. Though, he visits every Saturday the synagogue, because he has their his social network, and the synagogue is an ideal playground for practical jokes.

1 Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God.
2 Therefore, whoever resists authority opposes what God has appointed, and those who oppose it will bring judgment upon themselves.
3 For rulers are not a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil. Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive approval from it,
4 for it is a servant of God for your good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the evildoer.
5 Therefore, it is necessary to be subject not only because of the wrath but also because of conscience.
6 This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.
7 Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.
8 Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

It is also true that she comes from a failed state, Somalia and is in t America to dilute its resolve[this is happening at an alarming rate]. She, however, opens up a can of worms. Killing is against the Ten commandments. Does this mean that one simply roll over and die in the face of aggression? Do what Jesus does is not always how we reason. Our logic is not always congruent with his stated objectives. In my hypocritical stance I would protect my interest in the face of aggression. I agree I am a sinner and never will be perfect
Hoi Polloi says
Rest assured that all are sinners. The commandment is more accurately translated as, “Thou shalt not murder.” Death is the prescribed sentence in the Bible for murder in the first degree. Christ did not oblige His own to hand over their families. He instructed His followers to hand over a shirt, if asked, then further, possibly, a coat. It is the belief of people such as Omar that Christianity is weak in comparison to Islam’s barbaric worldly teachings. That merely demonstrates their allegiance to flesh above spirit. And, I wonder, is Ilhan inadvertently asking for a Christian government?

SamB and Hoi Polloi, I liked both of your comments.
Even though I am a Christian, in the face of islamic aggresion I rather die fighting. May God have mercy.

Thanks to both of you.

Thanks. It is not my intention to sound condescending or pedantic because I’m no expert. I’m sure Sam understands all this and more. Generally, I post here more in response to lurkers and the likes of Omar who seem to believe they are in a war against Christianity that they have pretty much already won.
