The fact that the Turkish Foreign Ministry would attack the Archbishop of Athens for abetting “the increase of racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia in Europe” confirms that the concept of “Islamophobia” is an illegitimate conflation of two distinct phenomena: crimes against innocent Muslims, which are never justified, and honest analysis of the motivating ideology of jihad terror, which is always necessary. Archbishop Ieronymos pointed out that Islam was political and expansionist, which its scripture, doctrine, and history show it to be.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry knows that Archbishop Ieronymos is right. In January 2018, as Turkish troops launched a military operation in Syria against the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), 90,000 mosques in Turkey prayed the Qur’an’s “Conquest” sura, sura 48, which calls upon Muslims to be “ruthless against unbelievers.” Why did they do that, unless they assumed that their military action had an Islamic aspect? And in November 2019, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “Our God commands us to be violent towards the kuffar (infidels). Who are we? The ummah [nation] of Mohammed. So [God] also commands us to be merciful to each other. So we will be merciful to each other. And we will be violent to the kuffar. Like in Syria.”
Archbishop Ieronymos said: “Islam, its people, is not a religion but a political party and are the people of war…They are the people who seek expansion, that is the characteristic of Islam.” Erdogan proved him right.
“Turkey Slams Head of Greek Church, Ieronymos, for ‘Insulting Islam,'” by Tasos Kokkinidis, Greek Reporter, January 18, 2021:
Turkey slammed Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos, for his remarks during a television interview on Sunday about Islam.
“These provocative expressions of Archbishop Ieronimos, which incite the society to hostility and violence against Islam, also show the frightening level Islamophobia has reached,” reads a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
“Such malign ideas are also responsible for the increase of racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia in Europe,” it adds.
Ankara was responding to Ieronymos’ interview on Open TV, in which he appeared to claim that Islam is not a religion, but a political party seeking war.
“Islam, its people, is not a religion but a political party and are the people of war…They are the people who seek expansion, that is the characteristic of Islam,” Ieronymos said….
Turkey’s directorate of religious affairs also slammed the Greek archbishop, calling on Christians to oppose this “sick mentality.”
Its head, Ali Erbas, said in a statement that “this kind of discourse aiming to marginalize Muslims feeds the racist perspective against them, and leads to attacks on their lives and places of worship.”
He said that the archbishop’s statements provoked the society, and could lead to rise in hatred, hostility and violence against Islam.
Erbas said Islam is a religion of peace, and the Islamic civilization has always enabled people to live together for centuries, irrespective of their beliefs, religion and culture….

Turkey’s belligerent statements and actions are being tolerated by Europe, just like the third reich was in the run up to the Anschluss, the annexation of Czechoslovakia and finally the invasion of Poland. And they do it at their own peril
The correct response to Turkey, probably by Greece (since the EU won’t say anything) would be to tell them to mind their own business, and stop interfering in their internal affairs. Can one imagine Turkey daring to accuse China of islamophobia, where they’d at least be more accurate?

The Turkish Foreign Ministry fears China – and will not call them out.
No “Death to China” shouts, signs, etc.

True, Infidel.
LB says
Greece dares not lift a finger against Turkey because Turkey is the EU’s darling muslim country, and since Greece is heavily dependent on the EU (its main and only currency is the Euro), that makes the Greeks powerless to do anything against the Turks. Turks know this very well and that’s why they are ramping up aggression against the Greeks everywhere (in Turkey, in Cyprus and even in Greece itself) because they know there will be no consequences for them whatsoever.
Besides, even if the Greeks dared to actually respond in any significant way, the Turks will just cry “ISLAMOPHOBIAAAAAAAA” resulting in Greece getting sanctioned by the EU (an economical death sentence for them) and also suffer “justified retaliation” from the Turks in no small amount. It’s a lose-lose situation for Greece however you look at it.

Hungary and Poland have been sanctioned by the EU but were able to resist. Part of the reason may be that they are more economically viable than Greece…

What balderdash! Who are real bigots here?

Greece needs to follow the examples of Poland and Hungary, and wean itself away from the EU. Maybe form a mini alliance w/ countries like Serbia, North Macedonia, Cyprus, Israel and Armenia. And figure out how to resurrect its economy

These saracens agree with me, a dirty kufr. I am surprised, but I must also say that nothing can/will stop islamophobia. Why? Islamophobia does not exist. Since islamophobia does not exist, islamophobia can’t be stopped.
mortimer says
DV, Allah says that he creates Islamophobia by casting fear into the hearts of kafirs.
So how can the kafir remove the fear if Allah placed it their? Wouldn’t that be blasphemous?
don vito says
Yes it would, but I did not say remove it, I said it doesn’t exist. I’m sure Mort, you have a quote from islamikkk sacred text for me to show me the error of my thinking where allah is quoted as saying allah created islamophobia. As I understand islamophobia is a neologism created by the ITTT (?) islamikkk thinkers society to inhibit criticism of islam within the past 30 years. It wouldn’t be the first time for me to run afoul of allah’s diktats. Cheers to you Mort, enjoy your posts.

Another quote from Islamic scholar Maulana Maududi:
– “Islam is not a ‘religion’ in the sense this term is commonly understood. It is a system encompassing all fields of living. Islam means politics, economics, legisla¬tion, science, humanism, health, psychology and sociol¬ogy. It is a system which makes no discrimination on the basis of race, color, language or other external categories. Its appeal is to all mankind. It wants to reach the heart of every human being.”

Disagree: Hieronymos overgeneralized and exaggerated the point. That is not ‘nailing it’ … it’s blowing it up.

I respect your viewpoint, mortimer, but Mr. Spencer says that the Turkish Foreign Ministry knew the Archbishop was right. And he is and speaks the truth. Perhaps we look at it differently because we’re Greek.

Ataturk was able to put the lid on Islam to some extent–but this has, sadly, only ever been partial.
mortimer says
Of course, Islam is highly political, since 51% of the Islamic ‘Trilogy’ is political and only 18% of the text is about Allah. Turkey has politicized religion in a great big way recently, as well, by re-Islamizing itself. They have tried to remove Turkey’s previous secularism with a vengeance. Erdogan and his POLITICO-RELIGIOUS fanatics are pied pipers leading the Turkish people to fire, death and financial ruin.
Of course, Greece’s Orthodoxy in the past has not exactly been apolitical either and many of the clergy have been closely aligned with Greek fascism and promoted it! These fascists are no better, having emphasized politics over the spiritual message of enlightenment and love of one’s neighbour and even love of one’s enemies.
Whatever the motive of Orthodox priests in politicizing their churches, the example of political Islam in the past cannot be an excuse today. A little more self-awareness on both sides would be nice, if the future is to be harmonious between states.
