I guess it’s a question that could be asked of most religions. Did Buddha exist? How about Moses? Adam & Eve? Jesus? The Devil?

Shakespeare wrote:
“The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.”
The big question for me is not whether a certain person ever actually existed, it’s whether the ideas that are linked to that person’s supposed existence are good or are evil. That is what transcends death and time and touches our own existence … which will someday seem like nothing more than a fairy tale to a future generation. Did men once live in caves or fight a 10-year war over a woman or walk on the moon or fly a helicopter by remote control on Mars? Or are these all dreams I am now having as I doze beneath a baobob tree?

Well put CES, It’s a bit like a scenario that was put to some archeology students.
5 thousand years in the future a dig unearths a Bart Simpson doll.
Is this relic recognised as a toy or do they say he must of been one of their Gods because we find so many of them?
The same as can be said for religious figures of the past.

Wont talk about the others, but Buddha definitely existed. His name was Siddhartha Gautama, he was a prince in a Himalayan kingdom now a part of Nepal, and his activities in life are well documented. Several contemporaneous historical accounts of rulers influenced by him lay out their interactions w/ him and so on. Yeah, in some cases, historians have had to analyze and resolve differences in various accounts, which is what historians normally do, but there is no arguing the fact that he actually existed
The issue about Mohammed, as laid out by RS, is that there was no mention of him during Umayyad times and there are different accounts of which caliph compiled the quran. Whereas in the case of Buddha, as pointed out above, his existence was well established in most contemporaneous literature
