Southwest spokesperson Brandy King said: “Our internal reports from the flight do not support claims made by the passenger regarding comments or decisions being made based upon appearance.”
Fatima Altakrouri claims that the flight attendant said: “If we sat her there, she’d bring down the plane in an emergency.”
How likely is that? Before the Covid hysteria hit, for about fifteen or twenty years I was flying at very least once every couple of weeks. I flew all over the country and to Europe and Australia as well. I’ve been on hundreds of flights. On many of those flights were Muslims in hijabs as well as Muslim men in djellabas etc. I never saw anyone give them any trouble. I once saw about 20 Muslim men gather in a gate area for prayers, after which they boarded the plane I boarded as well. No one bothered them. My experiences don’t mean that no Muslim ever experiences unpleasantness from rude people on flights, but how likely do you think it is that this flight attendant decided to insult this woman publicly and imply she was a terrorist? Quite aside from the issue of “Islamophobia,” I’ve been on hundreds of flights and I’ve seen flight attendants act rude and snippy, but I’ve never seen them publicly mock or berate customers. I was on a flight once sitting next to a drunk guy who kept the flight attendant waiting on him constantly, as he loudly and rudely demanded drink after drink, as well as extra food. She kept giving him what he demanded, without a cross word. I’m sure it has happened that flight attendants will make fun of customers within the earshot of other customers and of the targeted person as well, but I suspect that such incidents are vanishingly rare. Also, nowadays the American public in general has been sensitized to the supposed problem of “Islamophobia,” and for the most part people bend over backward to be solicitous to religious Muslims, as they are afraid of accusations of “bigotry” and public claims of discrimination such as this one.
All that makes me skeptical of what Fatima Altakrouri and Muna Kowni are claiming here. If the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) gets involved, as is likely, I’ll be even more skeptical, as CAIR has shaken down numerous American companies with claims of discrimination against Muslims. Victim status is as lucrative as it is coveted in our sick society today, and there have been numerous spurious claims of hate crimes against Muslims. Nevertheless, Southwest doesn’t want a firestorm of negative publicity, and so may well just give the sisters a payout to make this whole thing go away. Nice work if you can get it.
“Muslim woman says Southwest barred her from plane’s exit row because of hijab,” by Eve Chen, USA Today, June 2, 2021 (thanks to Henry):
A Muslim woman from Texas has filed a complaint with the Department of Transportation, saying she was not allowed to sit in an emergency exit row on a Southwest Airlines flight because she was wearing a hijab, but her sister was allowed to sit there without one. Southwest says it’s not what it seems.
Fatima Altakrouri and Muna Kowni were traveling from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Dallas on May 22, when they spotted the last two seats together in the emergency exit row.
Altakrouri said that at first, she didn’t think anything of it when she asked a flight attendant if they could sit there and was told no.
“As I was walking, I overheard her saying to the passengers in the seats that were around that area, laughing, saying that ‘If we sat her there, she’d bring down the plane in an emergency,” said Altakrouri, who wears a hijab. “You can imagine the shock I was in at that time.”
Altakrouri said she wasn’t sure she heard that right, but then her sister followed up.
“She asked her, ‘Why can’t my sister sit here?'” Altakrouri said the flight attendant responded, “She cannot sit here because she can’t speak English.”
“I told her twice, ‘She speaks English,” Kowni added. “She’s spoken English in front of her.”
In a statement to USA TODAY, Southwest spokesperson Brandy King said: “Our internal reports from the flight do not support claims made by the passenger regarding comments or decisions being made based upon appearance. The safety of our passengers is paramount, and individuals seated in an exit row are required to verbally indicate that they can perform certain duties in flight. Our Crew is responsible for getting that confirmation from a passenger before seating them in an overwing exit row and was unable to gain acknowledgment from the passenger during boarding. Therefore, as a courtesy, the Crew offered her an alternate seat.”
I felt like I was not American at all’
The sisters, who were born and raised in the U.S., said they didn’t want to make a scene and get kicked off the flight, but they noted that the flight attendant had several opportunities to confirm Altakrouri spoke English.
“We both spoke Arabic; we both spoke English,” said Kowni, who is also Muslim but does not wear a hijab. “So, why didn’t you tell me I don’t speak English? I spoke Arabic like her, too. … So it couldn’t be any more clear than that when it comes to discrimination.”
“I felt like I was not American at all,” Altakrouri said….
The sisters said they tried to talk to the flight attendant one last time as they were leaving the plane upon arrival.
“All she does is scream at us, ‘Get off the plane,’ and she pointed out towards the door,” Kowni said….
“I would like for them to at least reach out, you know, show that they, you know, apologize,” Kowni said….
The sisters said they plan to keep flying Southwest.

The English test that one has to pass while applying for citizenship is embarrassingly simple. I got mine last year, and I was asked to read a sentence ‘When is Columbus Day?’ and write a sentence ‘Columbus Day is in October’. Surely they can expect better than that?
Similarly, the TOEFL exam that foreigners have to pass to get into American colleges is just as embarrassingly simple. And I’m talking from 1992 here: am pretty sure it has become simpler, not harder over the following 3 decades
Yeah, I too have heard enough people whose English is barely intelligible, and that’s in this country, not elsewhere

It has come to be that many of a foreign origin, or that of their parents/grandparents, don’t speak English clearly. Many companies now have spokespeople doing their advertisements in order to show how “diverse” they are and/or appeal to foreigners in this country.
Many of these ads are difficult to understand because the English is not clear, spoken with a heavy accent, etc. The speaker would claim to be speaking English.
In recent times, there seem to be many who don’t pronounce certain consonants…leaving out t’s and d’s and putting s on words where it does not belong, as well as inserting r’s or leaving them out where most Americans pronounce them a lot different.
They both make the same claims, but what about the other passengers?
For me, I wouldn’t want them on the plane with me…in any seats.
Unfortunately, companies cannot use their common sense to protect the rest of us from mozlums and their murder instructions.
Southwest should be on guard for a lawsuit. And the pics of these women should be burned into the memory of every employee of the company since they say they plan to fly again.

We just returned from a trip within the contiguous 48 on American Airlines and encountered multiple airline announcers, both in the airport and in the air, who had heavy foreign accents and were completely unintelligible. I cannot see this as a good thing.
Last year we flew to Portland and were surprised to find, after many statements about covid restrictions (no middle seats sold, etc.), that the airport and the plane were jammed with passengers wearing BLM insignia. Apparently that’s yet another way BLM doesn’t have to comply like the rest of us.

Which pretty much proves that they are lying. If I was ill-treated by an airline, or any business for that matter, I’d make it a point to find an alternative and not do business w/ them again
somehistory says
I think the same. No one wants to go out of their way to receive mistreatment.
For example, I must now go to a laundry for my washing (no hookups here). I usually go on a certain day, certain time, but was unable to do so the last time, so I went on a different day.
I usually see the same people doing their laundry. Most of them are very courteous.
The last time, there was an older couple there, using several machines, and then putting their clothes in the driers before mine had finished washing. They still had one to go, and mine was finishing. The woman had already taken up several of the driers, but when she saw me approaching my washer, she hurried over to the driers, took one item out of a small load and threw it into another drier and started the machine.
That left me with one drier on the bottom row. One she had stopped her husband from using. So, I tossed my clothes in; and watched her take the one item out of the drier, put it back in with the other pieces and proceed to put her last load in.
I asked the attendant if that couple normally goes on that day, she looked and said, “yes,” and I told her what had occurred. She apologized for what happened, couldn’t do anything about it, but I assured her I would not be coming again at that time…if I could avoid it.
And that wasn’t the business. Had it been someone who worked there and did customer’s laundry…I might have to find a new location.

Probably a lie (what a shock, mendacity from a Muslim), but even if true so what?
How many Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Jews, Sikhs, agnostics, atheists, Taoists (yeah, Taoists) adhere to an ideology that just since 9/11 has produced almost 40,000 documented terrorist attacks in the name of their ideology? Islam is unique here and one would be a fool to not suspect any Muslim at a rate no greater than the other groups of people mentioned above I mentioned above. Yep, Christian and agnostic terrorist attacks are all over the place, now aren’t they?
You brought this on yourself, Muslims. Your religion stinks. Yes, no one should be harmed just because they are a Muslim but neither should any non-Muslim with any common sense assume that Muslims are no more likely to engage in terrorism in the name of their belief system than those who adhere to some other belief system. As a corollary, Muslims, this would include making fun of you and your faith. You so deserve it.

Something else: When I see a woman wearing an hijab, it might as well be a woman wearing a swastika armband.
Offended by this comment, Muslims? Too bad, because on a virtually daily basis in the Islamic world Adolf Hitler is praised, his only fault being that he didn’t kill enough Jews (or convert to the magnificent religion which is Mo’s creed).
As for you so-called moderate Muslims out there who don’t praise Hitler, I have zero respect for you nonetheless because your religion anticipated Nazism’s hatred of the Jews in its theological blueprint, contra the Christian theological blueprint which, at its best (N.B., Islam has “no best”), has all along asserted that the Romans and Jews responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus were not “merely” Romans and Jews but representative of Everyman, i.e., humanity killed Christ and not just these two peoples of antiquity.
Besides, and again I direct this comment to Muslims especially, Islam denies Jesus was crucified (e.g., in Sura 4) and thus denies Jesus rose from the dead after the crucifixion, and even has Jesus (Isa–the Muslim distortion of Jesus, just as Islam distorts so much else) coming back at the end of the world and throwing all Christians into Hell for deifying Him.
Another “observation”: Joe Biden no more gets all this about Islam than he does about the giant lie he keeps telling about how awful white supremacy is in America. I needed to add this Yes I did, because I love America, I love the idea of America, and right now the current and fraudulently elected President is doing his “best,” highly limited and clueless as he is, to destroy America. The Islamic world and the rank authoritarians of the world like Xi and Putin must be so pleased that America has finally “managed” to place an utter fool (and if one does not understand that Biden is a fool, always has been, then there is no help or hope for you most probably) as possessed (perhaps in more way than one) of the highest office in the land.
I’ve written enough. To write anymore would be superfluous for now and very, very depressing. The farce which is Biden, coupled with the farce which is Islam, coupled with the farce which is Western Leftism is, arguably, the cruelest trinitarian farce of all, in not only Western history but all of history.

Once the “gene therapy” was being used, the deaths from heart disease, cancer, diabetics, flu and vehicle accidents could again be reported as was the usual case before covid 19 came on the scene.
Even when they were saying all of these other causes were non-existent…as in no deaths reported for any of the leading causes of death…the death rate was very small.
Now, they are refusing to admit that many people are actually dying after receiving the shots **because** of the shots, but the deaths are “inconclusive” for the shot.

My response to this shakedown tale is “ horse manure”. We have all seen over the many years how this racket worked- and why – it’s a lucrative business. Human beings across the world behave in good, bad and indifferent ways – but with regard to radical moslems, we have observed predictable conduct definitely not to be admired or emulated. As to why these folks don’t return to their own hallowed halls back in misery land – well, just ask yourselves, how profitable would that be? My guess is, not much. Like many, I have flown across continents for many many years on countless airlines. My understanding of passengers located in emergency seats focused first on their ability and knowledge regarding opening the door in an emergency – just that. Should one choose NOjT to be seated in an emergency seat – that was accepted – provided other seats were available. As a matter of interest, I have flown on many middle eastern airlines – the worst which will remain unnamed, involved my window seat in the bulkhead. I boarded, but my seat, and the entire bulkhead were filled with luggage belonging to the seated aisle passenger. I commented on this bizzare setup to a flight attendant – that this blockage contravened air safety rules – and she ushered me to a seat elsewhere. Mealtime arrived, I was ignored – but a couple seated across the aisle received several extra meals all at one time. My Arabic seat partner saw what was happening and kept saying ‘sorry’ ‘sorry’ – nice man! No, I never did get anything to eat. I never flew that particular airline again. Had this occurred in the West, I could have made myself a tidy fortune in a racist lawsuit!

I learned my 5th language, English, in less than one year and by my late teens I worked as a Disk Jockey in radio without an accent. America is made up of immigrants who became American, spoke English, felt American, thought American. Arabs who settle here and speak only Arabic at home and teach their children Arabic, will never be American and neither will their children. America doesn’t need that type of immigrant.
gravenimage says
There’s nothing wrong with speaking another language–but not learning the host nation’s language (as you did–thank you) is a serious issue.
And pious Muslims go a step further, wanting to impose Muslim languages, especially Arabic, on others.
Hoi Polloi says
I agree that refusal to engage linguistically is unacceptable. We’ve all done it in my family and it just isn’t that hard. Further, English is a powerful language and parents who have their children’s interests at heart encourage development of English skills, so it’s a solid indicator. It’s impossible to be a full contributor to a society while refusing to engage on such a fundamental level.
somehistory says
The more languages a child learns when young, the easier it is to learn, and they are very useful in the world beyond the home.
When in the past, I would meet someone whose main language was one of which I had no knowledge, I would ask that person to teach me how to say thank you and friends.
One man I met was from an African nation and he spoke English very well after only a little time in the U.S. He told me that around his village in Africa, there was a multitude of languages and no one could learn them all, so everyone learned English in order to communicate with people from other villages nearby.
By the time of adulthood, and his trip here, he was well-versed in speaking English and communicating enough to find work, a place to live, etc.
Hoi Polloi says
English is a powerful language.
gravenimage says
There are occasionally very elderly people–who usually come over with their families–who have a hard time learning a new language.
My best friend in grade school was Chinese-American. She spoke fluent English, as did her parents (albeit on their parts with thick accents). Her grandmother, who came from rural China and spoke an obscure dialect of Chinese (as I was told), was never able to really learn the language. Apparently when she was growing up she didn’t even have the concept that people spoke other languages. She even had trouble with Cantonese..
She had learned a few rote phrases in English–“thank you”, “you’re welcome”, “glad you come”, “have some please”, and “you are very pretty”. I heard these over and over when we visited her in Chinatown. I also learned a few phrases (which I have since forgotten), and she smiled at my pronunciation, which I’m sure was terrible.
I never had a problem with her not learning English–she was always very friendly and was obviously not rejecting America.
But this is not the usual situation with immigrants, of course. If I were immigrating to another country or even going to spend a significant amount of time there, I would make an effort to learn the language. Even on a daytrip to Mexico I took along a Spanish language phrase book–even though most people in Tijuana speak some English.
Hoi Polloi says
