But here are two narratives. Tell me which one sounds more plausible
“Even the Taliban are Surprised at How Fast They’re Advancing” – NBC News
“It is not inevitable,” he said, later adding: “The likelihood that there’s going to be a Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely.” – Politico
Highly unlikely. You heard it here second.
“It is not inevitable,” he said, later adding: “The likelihood that there’s going to be a Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely.”
It’s not inevitable. It’s highly unlikely. Two very different ideas.
How inevitable and unlikely is it?
Since May 1, days after President Joe Biden announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops, the Taliban have captured 69 of the country’s 407 districts, including territory in northern provinces once seen as off-limits for the insurgency and a stronghold for the government, according to Bill Roggio, editor of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies’ Long War Journal. The Taliban now hold 142 districts, and are fighting for control of about 170 more.
But the current numbers are actually 195.
In all, the Taliban currently controls 195 districts and contests another 129 districts, according to the real time assessments by FDD’s Long War Journal.
So highly unlikely.
Biden also denied reports of a U.S. intelligence assessment saying the government in Kabul could be toppled in as little as six months after the withdrawal.
Six months sounds generous.
Meanwhile, Biden is leaving behind six hundred soldiers and a whole bunch of diplomats in Kabul because he’s itching to recreate Saigon.
But it’s “highly unlikely” that will happen.

Better start preparing for the tsunami of refugees – both genuine and fake – that will be coming our way very soon, folks!
gravenimage says
There is no reason we should let them in–but you are sadly *not wrong*.
Infidel says
Let the refugees flee to their neighbors – Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Iran. There is no reason any country beyond that should have to take them
Grace says
Since the ‘pretender’ has come into power and is busy destroying the Republic I haven’t had much time to worry about the Taliban. However I am cognoscente of the damage being done all over the planet with the redistribution of the world population by blatant invasions. Where will it end? Only God knows. So many of our would be leaders seem to be ignorant of the dangers and destruction. Thank you, Robert Spencer and David Harowitz for the work you do to try to enlighten a population that doesn’t seem to be listening. .

Instead of denying that the Taliban is taking over the country, the right answer for Biden and his handlers/staff to have given would have been to stick w/ the Trump stance: “We have trained them for 20 years, and if after all that, they can’t keep their country from falling to the Taliban, that’s their problem, not ours”
Good thing that the Neocon faction in the GOP is fast eroding, or else, a GOP replacement for Biden would have committed to re-inserting troops there. We need to get our troops out of the entire Mid East and focus on China, since they’re on track to pass us in naval supremacy for starters, and other areas of military dominance as well, if we keep getting distracted by such side issues

Despite abandoning South Vietnam, the Democrats have won the presidency for candidates like Clinton, Obama and now Biden. So it did not hurt them much, and I expect they think this will help them establish a reputation of peacemaking.

There was never a reasonable prospect that this war would end well.

Sadly true, Rarely.
Infidel says
Depends on where you define the ‘end’. Had we pulled out in 2002 after the Taliban lost Kabul and Kandahar, it would have been a victory like the one we had in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In 1991, we weren’t wringing our hands over the shi’a and Kurds: we executed our mission – expelling Saddam from Kuwait – and then ended it. Only mistake we probably made was to remain in Saudi Arabia after that
But yeah, if you define the mission as ‘remaking Afghanistan in our own image’, you’re right: there was never any prospect, let alone reasonable prospect, that this would succeed
gravenimage says
I agree, Infidel. Our going in and making Afghanistan an unsafe place for Osama bin Laden andf Al Qaeda was a good thing–after that, we should have left.

Even Malala Yousafzai (the so called Pakistani activist), continues to wear the headdress of second class citizenship that Islam proscribes for her gender. Unless the Afghanistan citizens renounce their savage “religion ” nothing will change or improve. What a waste in blood and treasure for America who failed to recognize the underlying cause of Afghanistan’s problems. Lead by the simpleton, George W. Bush, with the false proclamation that Islam is a religion of peace, our country was set on a tragic trajectory of nation building with a nation that was still committed to following a proto-nazi ideaology.

Joe Biden is still proving how feeble- minded unrealistic and therefore totally unfit to be in the Office of the US Presidency when he said that fool statement which is ““The likelihood that there’s going to be a Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely.”
For the lying and disingenuous and deceptive Taliban will say anything as a method for them to restore themselves to power in Afghanistan . The aggressive and hostile with their Islamic agenda of having complete control in that land. They will stop until they in in total power and then will establish the brutal tyranny of Sharia law in the country .
What is also very likely is the after the Taliban regains control and power in Afghanistan they will allow vicious and deadly jihad terror organizations to use the land as a, base ,as they had done in the 1990’s, to use their land , that they had obtained by both deception and violent force, to scheme future murderous and destructive jihad attack against America and other Western countries.
Biden has reveals that he is a very unintelligent man not to understand this and has likewise exposed that he is an simple- minded man who is very incompetent should not have been allow to enter the Oval Office of the White House with the position and title of “President .”

Read the current constitution of Afghanistan which the United States fought to help preserve and protect. Article Three of Chapter One requires: “No law shall contravene the tenets and provisions of the holy religion of Islam in Afghanistan.”
The United States should NEVER have been a part of installing such a government. The ideals that helped make the U.S. a great nation from its very founding were betrayed when the U.S. used its power and resources to help keep Afghanistan Islamic.
I say good riddance to Afghanistan. It is populated by a people who chose of their own accord to be the slaves of Allah. Now let their tyrants forge their chains and bind them more tightly than ever. Let them be “perfect” in their religion.
PRCS says
Had the U.S. not been a part of installing such a government, Afghanistan would have remained Islamic.
Had we not, the outcome would have been the same.
Given that 99.7% of that nation’s population is Muslim, it’s no surprise that Chapter One, Article One states: “The sacred religion of Islam is the religion of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.”
CogitoErgoSum says
Yep, and that means they do not accept the idea that all men are created equal …. Muslim is not equal to Infidel and most certainly men are not equal to women. Did anybody in our government ever understand that? Trump may have but I’m certain Biden does not. Maybe someday one of our President’s will … or maybe by then our Constitution will have been amended to require our laws to be in compliance with Islam.
Keith O says
My heart goes out to the vets from all the nations who went to the Ghan. They did what their countries asked them to and they along with the Afghan civilians have been betrayed by turds like sleazy Joe and their ilk.
The armaments companies must be rubbing their hands together with glee at the thought of extending this war into another country.
Now that the Taliban are re arming with American equipment the rest of the world will have a hard time containing them.
Infidel says
No, they were not betrayed by Joe. They were let down by Bush and Obama, both of whom had that utopian goal of making Afghanistan another Switzerland, and failing/refusing to recognize the islamic aspect of that conflict. Had they recognized it, they’d have pulled out of there once Kabul and Kandahar fell
This is one of the rare cases where Obama has done the right thing, and we shouldn’t criticize him just b’cos he’s not Trump, when he’s doing the same thing that Trump would have done, albeit a tad slower

Infidel,
And Obama was, at the very least, brought up as a muslim – and always admired that religious/political ideology.
He should have known that an islamic mindset could never accept a Jeffersonian-type democracy.
Infidel says
Lincoln
I have a strong suspicion that Obama never accepted a Jeffersonian-type democracy either. Which is why he joked about ‘hypothetically’ remote-controlling it from outside. I think a lot of people have a strong suspicion that it’s he who is remote-controlling this government via people like Susan Rice
James Lincoln says
Infidel,
Thank you for your reply.
You may, in fact, be right…
