“US general tells British special forces: Stop rescuing people in Kabul, you’re making us look bad,” by Tom Rogan, Washington Examiner, August 20, 2021:
I understand that the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division has told the commander of the British special forces at the Kabul airport to cease operations beyond the airport perimeter.
Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue has told his British Army counterpart, a high-ranking field-grade officer of the British army’s 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, that British operations were embarrassing the United States military in the absence of similar U.S. military operations. I understand that the British officer firmly rejected the request.
This show of rare tension between the U.S. and British command groups in Kabul reflects three factors.
First, it shows the obvious stress of attempting to extricate thousands of personnel under a situation of increasing terrorist threat. Elements of the Haqqani network, the Islamic State in Afghanistan, and possibly al Qaeda are now operating in proximity to Kabul airport with some degree of command separation from the Taliban.
In addition, the British military has more operational latitude in Kabul than the U.S. military, including the Navy SEAL elements present at the airport. I understand that the SAS has conducted operations to bring American citizens, as well as British citizens and at-risk personnel, through checkpoints and to the airport. This is not an indictment on U.S. capabilities or special operations intent, but rather, it’s a reflection of political-military authorities. In part, this difference is understandable. Large-scale U.S. military operations beyond the Kabul airport perimeter would entail significant risk absent prior Taliban approval. But there is a sense, at least by allies, that the U.S. military could be doing more to leverage the Taliban into providing greater ease of access to the airport for those most at risk….

My comments about what I think of this US general would get me permanently banned from this site. Makes me embarrassed to let anyone know I’m a former Army Officer.

Namer, thank you for your service.

Seconded!

Thanks for your service. I’m a civilian to the bone, but something tells me that focusing on our military being woke isn’t working out too well.

The Taliban’s (and Al Qaeda’s) war on the West is funded by China
as China gets fat from it’s access to Afghanistan’s natural resources
Have we missed some of the big strokes ?
Where’s that story Robert ?

I’m not sure that China is apt to have any better luck mining Afghanistan’s natural resources than any other Infidels have had.

I think that it depends on how brutal the Chinese Commies want to get against the local population.
Forced slave labor, maybe?

Brilliant, Diane! Thanks for citing General Anthony McAuliffe’s famous reply to the Nazi demand that he surrender.

One more mistake in this pile of mistakes, was outright telling the Taliban that we had no idea how many Americans (civilians) are currently in Afghanistan.
Muslims love slavery as you all know. Now they can keep themselves some American slaves just to satisfy their need for cruel amusement. Also as a constant reminder to the American people of what happens when you screw with muslims.
The communist in Vietnam did it, so will the Taliban.
They will also ransom some Americans to weak Joe for a fortune. The pallets of cash are probably sitting on the tarmac as I type.
gravenimage says
Agreed, Roberta. For one thing, never tell your enemies your weaknesses. Then, the US *should* have known how many civilians are in this hideously dangerous nation.
Infidel says
It is also a reminder to US – and other non-muslim civilians – not to go to a muslim country for anything, unless you’re a part of an invading army. Particularly not reconstruction projects. Those 10-50k Americans, as well as other nationalities – would have been far more useful in their home countries

The invading US military secures the country for the safe entry of thousands of left-leaning do-gooders. Eventually things change on a dime.Who is responsible for the safety of all these do-gooders who came of their own volition?
Malcolm (South Afric) says
If the question asked:” Should the USA leave Afghanistan” most would agree and say “Yes.”
The next question is :”How.”
That is the part that the Democrat, Admin and Gen Milly, got horribly wrong, there was no sense of an orderly withdrawal. In fact is happens to be the most chaotic withdraw the world has ever seen of a small contingent of personnel. Handing the enemy an air force, drones jets158 black hawk helicopters, 8000 M4, M16 auto rifles, humvees, Mraps, mortars, rockets night scopes.
Above all thousands of USA hostages. 2000 USA troops were pulled out of Afghanistan, then 6000 sent back to Afghanistan to secure a civilian Airport, The Democrats were in charge of that no one else.
The Democrat Admin and woke generals are angry that a small contingents of British paratroopers have gone behind enemy lines and hauling their people to the Airport.
Biden, Gen Milly, Austin, are the laughing stock of the Taliban. What a disgrace Biden is.
God Bless the USA
Malcolm (South Afric) says
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan was “a laughingstock,” during a daily press conference on Aug. 19, as part of Beijing’s propaganda campaign to leverage the crisis to attack the United States.
roberta says
And the foreign minister was correct.
Chinese foreign minister to Joe (Joe jump in a lake)
Joe to foreign minister (whats the pay for that sir?)
I’d bet Xi Jinping has his underlings handle Joe and Hunter. No one in charge deals directly with their servants.

Agreed, Malcolm.

The person making the U.S. military look bad is its commander-in-chief, Joe Biden. Biden is a liar and a phony and always has been. He’s nothing but a corrupt politician who is now losing control of his mental faculties due to his age. He cares more about his dogs at his home in Delaware than he does about anyone in Afghanistan. He is no leader and should never have become President of the United States. The longer he remains President the worse it is going get for the U.S. Trouble is, those waiting to take over for him are no better at leading than Joe is. The humiliation of the greatest country in the history of the world is only going to get worse over the next 3-4 years … and those years are going to seem like an eternity.

Veron Holness says
These men have betrayed their oath of office.
They do not care for their troops nor the people they swore to protect when joining the military.
What you have are career officers, more concerned with their future jobs with the military industrial complex.
They are the feet on the ground and have a up to date information. The should say damn those in Washington and risk a court martial for ignoring the mouth pieces of the Biden administration and start rescuing their fellow countrymen.
The outright nerve to ask British SF to stop rescuing people, this includes American citizens, in Kabul because of the negative optics, is beyond disgusting.
How far has the military leadership of US armed forces has fallen is beyond belief.
The ordinary servicemen and women must look at what is happening and ask themselves, “Do I trust these people to do right by me?”
This will be sapping the moral of the US armed forces, much like what happened during and after the Vietnam War, the only difference is that the other ranks of servicing military personnel will not be the focus of blame, unlike their Vietnam cadre.

F*cking insanity–just craven. Kudos to the Brits and anyone else rescuing westerners trapped in Afghanistan right now.

Once your leaders accept the “woke” narrative, they perceive their own side as the “bad guys”, and the enemy as guiltless “victims”.
Furthermore, in the name of “diversity” and “inclusivity”, your army includes lots of substandard individuals, misfits and fruitcakes.
Your side isn’t allowed to win the war, because that would be a victory for “racism”, “white supremacy”, “colonialism”, and so forth, dontcha know.
So, the Taliban got Afghanistan…
… and the US armed forces got “diversity”.
From the perspective of the “woke” mob, that’s “win win”.
