Jewish Organizations In Europe Eager to Welcome Afghan Refugees

Jewish organizations in Europe, led by HIAS (Hebrew Immigration Aid Society) Europe have thrown themselves enthusiastically into the job of helping Afghan refugees resettle in Europe. A report on this is here.

As Afghan refugees fled the Taliban takeover, Europe rushed to evacuate thousands, yet simultaneously shut its door to prevent others from finding safety. Fortunately, many of Europe’s Jews led by HIAS Europe have launched an emergency campaign to support Afghan refugees….

Just before Rosh Hashanah, almost 20 representatives of European Jewish groups including me [William Echikson, the author of this Times of Israel blog] assembled at the Brussels Sephardi synagogue to celebrate the second anniversary of the opening of HIAS’s first full-fledged European Union office. The day before, HIAS joined European civil society organizations to sign a statement calling on European countries to evacuate Afghans facing immediate security and safety risks and to scale up humanitarian assistance.

If this statement is only about evacuating Afghans who are in danger of being killed by the Taliban, getting them out of the country, that is one thing. But if it means something more — to help Muslim Afghans not just to flee the country but then to be resettled in Europe – that is quite another. And I am afraid that’s exactly what these samaritan groups, Jewish and non-Jewish, have in mind. Only islamophobes — like you, like me — would express doubts about this undertaking.

When we sit down at the table with other European humanitarian agencies, we are almost always the only Jewish voice,” said Ilan Cohn, the director of the Brussels office. “It’s important there be a Jewish voice: our Jewish history full of wandering, emigration, and displacement helps us understand the refugee plight.”

Does this “Jewish history full of wandering, emigration, and displacement” necessarily help Jews to understand some supposedly universal “refugee plight”? Are all refugees equally worthy of help? Think of the millions of ethnic Germans who, just at the end of World War II, fled from Poland (Eastern Prussia), Czechoslovakia (the Sudetenland), the Baltic states (the “Baltic Germans”), in order to avoid retribution at the hands of the locals, for having collaborated with the Nazi occupiers. Were these ethnic German “refugees” deserving of help in resettlement? Were the Palestinians who were expelled overnight from Kuwait in 1991, because they had turned ungratefully on the Kuwaitis who had allowed them to live in the sheikhdom, and welcomed Saddam’s invading Iraqi army, deserving of help in resettlement? Not all those claiming to be “refugees” are entitled to the same sympathy and help.

At the Brussels meeting, Chief Rabbi of Brussels, Albert Guigui spoke of his childhood in Morocco, when HIAS arranged with Morocco’s King Hassan for the migration of his country’s huge Jewish community. He called upon European Jews to support HIAS’s mission of rescuing Jewish and non-Jewish refugees as a religious imperative.

Should Israel now “rescue” from their UNRWA camps those who are called “Palestinian refugees” and bring them back to Israel for resettlement, where their grandfathers once lived, and where their presence would, through demography, destroy the only Jewish state? Does Chief Rabbi Guigui regard bringing those so-called “refugees” (really, the distant descendants of the original refugees of 1948) back to Israel as a “religious imperative” for Jews? Such an undertaking would be suicide for the Jewish state. While bringing more Muslims, whether from Afghanistan or elsewhere, into Europe may not, as of now, be suicidal, it will certainly create ever-more dangerous conditions for the Jews of Europe. Isn’t it a “religious imperative” for Jews to keep the Jewish people alive? Shouldn’t that come before “tikkun olam”?

HIAS still helps Jewish refugees. But these days, Jewish refugees are few and far between and all have Israel as a haven to welcome them. Most of HIAS’s present-day efforts are directed to non-Jews….

If HIAS believes that the situation of Jews around the world is so secure that it need no longer worry about rescuing any of them in the future (but what will Europe be like for Jews in ten years? In twenty?), and wants to concentrate its efforts on non-Jews, why must it choose to first help Muslim Afghanis settle in Europe? There are many Muslim countries, such as the five “stans” of Central Asia, whose peoples are religiously identical to, and ethnically close to, Afghanis, and where they could resettle without the slightest friction. There are other, non-Muslim peoples, whom HIAS should help right now; these are the Christians now being persecuted by Muslims in Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Iran, Algeria, and elsewhere in Dar al-Islam, people who deserve help in getting to Europe, where they would fit in with the indigenous population far better than could any of the Muslims from Afghanistan whom HIAS intends to help.

Another challenge comes from within European Jewish communities themselves. Like many other Europeans, European Jews often feel beleaguered and threatened by the influx of mostly Muslim refugees to the continent. Most European countries have responded to the Afghan crisis by reinforcing border controls.

European Jews are right to feel “beleaguered and threatened” by the “influx of mostly Muslim refugees.” If a poll were taken of their own views – as opposed to the pollyannish, tikkun-olamish Jewish organizations that are dead set on ignoring the threat posed by Europe’s Muslims to Europe’s Jews – very few Jews in Europe would want Muslim Afghans, or more Muslims from anywhere, to settle in their midst. They’ve had several decades of experience with Muslims; what they have endured as a result has been more than enough for them to regard with great apprehension any further increase in the Muslim population in Europe.

HIAS’s motto, in contrast, is “Welcome the Stranger, Protect the Refugee.” It supports European Jewish communities that wish to engage and assist newly arriving Afghan refugees. The Afghan Refugees Emergency Appeal provides technical and financial support for Jewish community organizations in Europe that wish to help Afghans.

That panglossian motto needs editing: “Welcome the stranger who means you no harm” is a better way to put it.

HIAS has a long and honorable history of helping Jewish refugees; its last major effort was between 1970 and 1988, aiding three hundred thousand Jews who were finally allowed to leave the Soviet Union for Israel and America. But why does HIAS now feel duty-bound to help Afghan Muslim refugees? These Muslim refugees may have helped the American forces; they may be in danger from the Taliban. They may honestly be indifferent to the hatred of Infidels that the Qur’an and hadith inculcate. But how can we be sure? The problem is that we have no reliable way of telling which Afghan Muslims clamoring for entry to Western Europe and North America are willing to ignore the texts and teachings of Islam that encourage hatred of Infidels and, especially, of Jews – and which have chosen to hide the hate in their heart for Christians and, again especially, for Jews. And even those Muslims who are not hostile to Jews may change their minds, as they seek to find someone to blame if their own situation in Europe proves disappointing; the Qur’an offer a ready-made enemy. Many Muslim refugees expect to immediately be provided with a standard of living equal to that of the indigenous Infidels; anything less seems unfair, even though the Muslims may have no marketable skills and cannot speak the local language. They know from the Qur’an that they are the “best of peoples” and the non-Muslims “the most vile of created beings.” Surely they deserve a higher station in life. And if they don’t get it…

They will know whom to blame – the Jews, of course –should things not turn out as they had hoped. Robert Spencer has usefully compiled a list of Qur’anic passages about the Jews. They are described as “inveterately evil and bent on destroying the wellbeing of the Muslims. They are the strongest of all people in enmity toward the Muslims (5:82); as fabricating things and falsely ascribing them to Allah (2:79; 3:75, 3:181); claiming that Allah’s power is limited (5:64); loving to listen to lies (5:41); disobeying Allah and never observing his commands (5:13); disputing and quarreling (2:247); hiding the truth and misleading people (3:78); staging rebellion against the prophets and rejecting their guidance (2:55); being hypocritical (2:14, 2:44); giving preference to their own interests over the teachings of Muhammad (2:87); wishing evil for people and trying to mislead them (2:109); feeling pain when others are happy or fortunate (3:120); being arrogant about their being Allah’s beloved people (5:18); devouring people’s wealth by subterfuge (4:161); slandering the true religion and being cursed by Allah (4:46); killing the prophets (2:61); being merciless and heartless (2:74); never keeping their promises or fulfilling their words (2:100); being unrestrained in committing sins (5:79); being cowardly (59:13-14); being miserly (4:53); being transformed into apes and pigs for breaking the Sabbath (2:63-65; 5:59-60; 7:166); and more.” They are bent on destroying the wellbeing of Muslims. They are the strongest in enmity toward Muslims. They are cursed by Allah. Muslims need know nothing more about them. Muslim antisemitism – hatred of Jews – is commanded by Allah himself.

Have the Jewish groups so eager to help Muslims settle in Europe forgotten what the Muslim presence in Europe has already meant for the Jews of the Continent? They have been suffering antisemitic attacks – by Muslims — in their apartments, on the streets, in kosher markets, outside Jewish schools. Jews have been subject to verbal abuse, been beaten up in the streets, had their kippahs stolen, been stabbed, and in some cases been murdered. Think only of what has happened in France: the Muslim who killed four Jews at the HyperCacher kosher market in Paris; the gang of Muslims who kidnapped 23-year-old Ilan Halimi, brutally tortured him for several weeks ,until he died from his injuries; the killing of Rabbi Sandler, together with three little children, two of them his own (they were murdered in front of him, before he too was killed), outside a Jewish school in Toulouse, the beating to death, and then defenestration, of Sarah Halimi, the beating, and setting on fire, of 85-year-old Mireille Knoll, a Holocaust survivor, by a Muslim boy whom she had known and befriended since his childhood. Jews have been set upon, and beaten, by Muslims in Berlin, Munich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Marseille, London, Manchester, Malmö, and dozens of other cities across the continent. Shouldn’t these disturbing incidents give pause to the Jewish groups that are so intent on bringing still more Muslims into Europe?

If Jewish organizations in Europe are determined to help these people, wouldn’t it make more sense to help them to settle In Muslim nations – in Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., or the best fit of all for Afghans, the five Central Asian “stans” of Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan? Would they not fare better settling among others who share what is most important to them – their Islamic faith – rather than among those whom the Qur’an teaches Muslims to despise?

The Union of the Italian Jewish Community, UCEI, will take the lead in welcoming and hosting 25 families evacuated from Afghanistan. When the Italian authorities release the refugees from quarantine, the Jewish community will step in to provide housing, phones, hygiene [sic] kids, and mental health support.

Why should Italy’s Jews be lavishing their bounty on people who have been taught to hate them? Even if not all of them do, in fact, feel that way, some of them surely do, and since we have no way of identifying them, why take a chance that you may be helping to admit those who wish you ill, and someday may act upon that wish?

Rome’s Progressive Beth Hillel synagogue invited a delegation of African refugees from Casa Africa to participate in its Rosh Hashanah celebrations. Beth Hillel has donated five new laptops and six refurbished computers to the refugees, allowing them to enroll in online Italian language and other courses. During the Rosh Hashana celebrations, the synagogue’s Tikkun Olam Committee Chair, Liliana Naim, said the project exemplified a basic Jewish value.

What is that “basic Jewish value”? I suspect Liliana Naim would say it is tikkun olam, ”to repair the world,” to help others. A tall order. But I take a different view, that another value comes first: the duty to stay alive and be well. The greater the number of Muslims in Europe, the greater the insecurity of the continent’s Jews (and, ultimately, of its Christians). Their safety and welfare should, for organized Jewry, come before this endless task of “repairing the world.”

    • Jews are supposed to be smart! HIAS, like ADL, is lead by opinionated, but clueless, people.

    • HIAS has run out of Jews to rescue, but wishes to continue to exist. Understandable – careers are at stake. Unforgiveable, however – giving aid and comfort to some of the Jewish people’s worst enemies.

      • Sounds like NATO, whose raison d’être hasn’t been there for at least 30 years. At this stage in history, I doubt that there are Jews anywhere in the world who can’t relocate to Israel if they want to – except maybe Iran

      • commonsense, I’m sure most of these people really believe that all of these Mohammedans are needy refugees.

    • My father was given refuge by the US when fleeing the Nazis of Austria and Germany. How about some loyalty to the countries that gave us refuge? Why simply think of the migration of Muslims and other aliens in terms of affecting Jews? Why not think of the effect of massive migration of alien peoples to the European countries and societies?

    Indeed. And Tikkun Olam, repairing the world is not merely a tall order- it is a false screed of the Left that demands self denegration, national denegration and erasure of all the other responsibilities and paths within this world.
    If one observes the 10 commandments, and the amplification unto 613 for Jews, these are a complex interactive command for ethics, morality, compassion, justice, etc- and ‘repairing the world’ is but one notion, misused by leftists and others to erase all the personal responsibility of individuals to themselves and to others and to their nation.
    There is no benefit to bringing sharia desiring, even sharia compliant peoples to America or any non muslim land as that is not repairing the world. That is helping to erase the freedoms that Afgans were not willing to accept responsibility for in their own nation.

    • Wanting to help others is a good thing–but you have to be careful who you invite in. Those who follow a creed telling them to destroy you is no wise. I doubt that many of these folks know much about Islam, though.

    • There seem to be two motivations for the government-funded refugee organizations.
      1) Maximize their own flow of money by moving as many “refugees” as possible, receiving their fee, and dropping them off at the expense of the citizens of the nation;
      2) as cultural-Marxists, they wish to dissolve and destroy the culture and society of the receiving countries.

      It’s a red herring to point to Muslims in particular. All alien peoples imported massively into any society are going to be disruptive and destructive.

  4. Do people who staff the leadership/management of these groups live anywhere near no-go zones in Europe? Or do they, like the AOCs or the Obamas, live in upscale areas of major cities or resorts that have no muslims remotely close? I will guarantee you that what drives Judeophobic sentiments outside the ummah are acts like these, where Jewish leaders actively work to accommodate muslims. Israel had tried it in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, w/ disastrous results

  5. The Jewish organizations in question should try settling this group of Moslem Afghan refugees in Moslem majority countries. As many of the few remaining Jews are leaving France , Germany most of western Europe because of the rise in anti-Semitic violence against them almost all of it committed by the new Moslem “refugees ” that arrived in the last 15 years. Charity begins at home with protecting your own people first ,would you invite people into your own home who main drive in life by their religion ,cultural, and political view point of the world is to either enslave you or rape and murder you? Or would you lock your door and bare the way from these people from entering your home? There are homeless native Europeans ,and other people in the world that they could help ,help many of them non-Moslems that would gladly leave many Middle Eastern and African nations if they could to get away from the Moslems who are killing them daily by Jihad. Why encourage people who hate the Jews because of what they believe more then the Nazis ,do they really believe that buying them laptops, providing shelter, or providing health care will change their minds? Islam has an unbroken track record of killing Jews going back 1400 years. ,Do the seriously think being “nice and kind will change their minds! The current Pope is of the same mind set ,so are many of the major of Christian sects in the west , a suicide pact should not be a requirement for following your religion.

  6. How would a person be repairing the world if he made it easier for other people to destroy the world? There are two kinds of people in this world – there are those who build things and there are those who destroy the things others have built. I hate to say this but Muslims are all about destroying the things that Jews (and Christians and all other non-Muslims) have built. I’m not going to contradict Christ and say you should leave a bleeding man at the side of the road but out of concern for my own family and all that I have ever struggled to build in my life I would be very careful about who it is that I brought into my home. It just might be someone who wants to burn down my house … and then that would be just one more thing for me to repair now wouldn’t it? Besides, if you read the story of the Good Samaritan closely he never brought any strangers into his own house. He helped someone who needed help but he didn’t put his own family at risk. It’s good to be kind but it’s also good to be smart.

  7. It’s not as if anyone asked these Jewish groups their opinion on bringing these Afghan refugees to Europe. How to deal with them once they arrive is the issue. Humanely is probably as good an idea as any although what “humanely” means is often up for debate.

    • Rarely, can we find out what treating people “humanely” means by looking into the Koran? Can you cite a passage from it for me that expresses a sentiment similar to the one in the story of the Good Samaritan … especially when it comes to helping someone of another religion?

      • Since I’m not a muslim I don’t look to the koran for guidance in how to treat others. Perhaps it is a good thing to treat others as I would like to be treated (sounds like a Golden Rule).
        I can’t be responsible for other people’s actions, only my own.

        • Rarely, no, I’m saying we should be familiar with the way THEY want to be governed – because the god they worship requests of them that they bring the entire world under the governance of Islam. And their god does not care if they have to kill anybody and everybody who tries to stop them. In fact, their god rewards them for it. Do you not find it disturbing to bring into your country people who don’t have a problem with that?

          It’s not a matter of immigration but, rather, how to treat them once they are here. It has absolutely nothing to do with the koran or how islam believes a society should be organized. I try to treat people according to my principles, not their principles.

        • Rarely, I admit I’m arguing about a situation similar to that of a woman who keeps saying that a man has told her he wants to kill her but the police can’t do anything until the man actually kills her. The woman shows the police all the bad stuff the man has written to her but still nobody believes her. She just has to wait until something bad happens. In the meantime the man runs into a spell of bad luck and gets kicked out of his apartment. The woman’s neighbors feel sorry for the man and let him move in with them … making it easier for the man finally to kill the woman. The neighbors offer their condolences. Sounds a bit like an Alfred Hitchcock movie doesn’t it? Anyway, I give up. There’s really no way I can win. I just have to hope I’m the one who is wrong – and that’s starting to make me feel as tired as Joe Biden looks. Time to give it a rest. That’s all for me today.

  8. I’m not aware that Judaism encourages suicide in order to help the stranger – that’s a new one, I guess. There is something about not giving charity that harms yourself, however.
    The last Jew has left Afghanistan. Doesn’t that say something?
    Those refugees should go to Muslim countries for cultural compatibility.

    • I suppose the hope now is that, like most of the people in the countries where those refugees are sent, none of them (or their children or grand-children) pays any attention to what the Koran really says. As Joe Biden would say, “Inshallah” – and then he would knock on wood.

    • There is a world of difference between accepting refugees into your country and how to act towards them once they arrive. I suspect that HIAS had no say in the first part.

  9. A person has to live with their conscience. But, being so ready to help those who are out to murder their way into complete control of the world, should temper the person with the Truth that when they salve their conscience, they are putting others at great risk.

    Any in this group, or ones like it, should watch the movie “Lake Placid.” By doing what she felt was ‘right,’ the woman put others and ultimately herself on the certain path to death.

  11. This world has a lot to thank the Jewish race for, western culture and our entire civilisation was built on their Judeo Christian values. Yet at times, some of them can be so dumb and stupid, that they are their own worse enemy.
    HIAS and such organizations are exactly who I’m talking about.

  12. The legacy Jewish organizations have been stealthily taken over by puppets funded by people like George Soros. These organizations are a facade and are really another NGO designed to further the goals of globalists. The ADL, the ACLU, these are NGOs that are a sham, doing the opposite of what they were founded to do.
