Archbishop Desmond Tutu has just died at the age of 90. He was an opponent of apartheid in South Africa, like every person of sense, and he worked, of course “tirelessly” to undo it, for which he was lauded beyond all measure.
Much of the world has responded to his death with over-the-top descriptions of Tutu. He was apparently the Perfect Man and Model of Conduct. Where have we heard that before? Barack Obama called him “a mentor, a friend, a moral compass for me and for so many others. A universal spirit, Archbishop Tutu was grounded in the struggle for liberation and justice in his own country.” He has been described with that same phrase — “a moral compass” — by another half-dozen of the Great and Good, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Ramaphosa described Tutu as “a patriot without equal, a leader of principle and pragmatism, and a moral compass.” He was, said others, “an icon.”
It’s time, then, for a little iconoclasm. This fulsome praise of Tutu has become comical.
When the Nobel Peace Prize Committee gave Tutu its award in 1984, it declared him to be “a unifying leader figure in the nonviolent campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid” in his country. I’m not sure about his being a “unifying leader [sic] figure,” but who am I to take issue the Nobel Peace Prize Committee? After all, the Committee has seen fit to award Nobels to Yassir Arafat, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama, so why not to Desmond Tutu? He was known, apparently, not only for being a “moral compass,” but also for his “puckish humor.” but I have yet to read any remark by him that struck me as “puckish humor.” Schoolboy humor, National Lampoonish humor, but with nothing “puckish” about it.
According to NPR’s Greg Myre, Tutu’s “most extraordinary and unique feature was his infectious, cackling laugh, usually triggered by one of his own jokes.” You can judge the quality of his jokes, and his own deep appreciation of himself for making them, here.
Tutu died, not only rich in honors, but in cash, too. At his death his net worth was $15 million.
Among those mourning the Archbishop, Muslims around the world seemed especially touched, and for a good reason: Desmond Tutu was an unswerving supporter of the Palestinians, whom he saw, quite inaccurately, I’m afraid, as the victims of an “Israeli apartheid” akin to that he had experienced in South Africa.
He spoke out about the supposed Israeli mistreatment of the Palestinians very often, mentioning his dismay that the Jews, having suffered so much under the Nazis, would in turn treat Palestinians the same way. He was not one to distinguish between kinds of suffering. The Palestinians, after all, are not being herded into cattle cars where many of them suffocate, nor burned alive, nor shot at the edge of pits into which they topple, soon to be covered over with corpses and in some cases buried alive, nor gassed to death, locked in showers that emit not water, but only Zyklon-B. No, all that the Palestinians must endure is being stopped at checkpoints in the West Bank in order to be searched for weapons that could be used in terrorist attacks, and prevented from smuggling into Gaza goods that can be used to make weapons or to build terror tunnels, in the West Bank must use a separate system of roads. Occasionally, at times of heightened tension, temporary limits are put on the numbers of Palestinians who can visit the Temple Mount at any one time. Does any of this make you think of Auschwitz, Belzec, Treblinka? No, I thought not.
Those terrible Israelis supply the Palestinians, both in Gaza and in the West Bank, with water, electricity, natural gas. They ship truckloads of food and medicine to Gaza every day. Many thousands of Palestinians are routinely treated in Israeli hospitals. But Israel still insists on defending itself, an undertaking which Tutu could not comprehend. When the Palestinians on the Great March of Return tried to breach Israel’s security fence with Gaza, the Israeli soldiers managed to stop them. The Palestinians threw rocks, Molotov cocktails, bottles filled with acid, and the occasional grenade at them. They also let loose arson balloons to fly into Israel where they would land and set farmland alight. In response, the IDF soldiers have used tear gas, rubber bullets and only in the most dire of situations, when the Palestinians have come right up to the fence, do they use live fire, which they aim at the legs. These are understandable security measures, and only a moral idiot would liken them to the robbery, torture, and murder of six million inoffensive Jews by the Nazis and their willing collaborators.
Tutu had very little understanding of Israel’s history, or of the dangers it had passed, and that continue to face it today..
He accepted, for example, the Palestinian claim that Israel came into existence only because of the sympathy given to Jews because of the Holocaust, and that the Palestinians “were being made to pay for the Holocaust, and the sins of the Europeans.” This was nonsense.
Zionism long predated the Holocaust. The return “to Jerusalem and to Zion” was always a goal of Jews in their centuries of exile; modern Zionism began at the end of the 19th century, and Jews started to make the restoration of a Jewish commonwealth a reality when, at the beginning of the 20th century, they began to return to Ottoman Palestine, where they bought land from Arab and Turkish landowners. That “return to Zion” was given official encouragement in the Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917. This was followed by the League of Nations’ system of mandates which eventually brought about the creation of four Arab states and a single Jewish state in former Ottoman lands. The Mandate for Palestine(1922) assigned all the territory from the Golan in the north to the Red Sea in the south, and from the Jordan River in the east to the Mediterranean in the west, to the future Jewish National Home. It was the duty of the Mandatory, Great Britain, to facilitate Jewish immigration and “encourage close settlement by Jews on the land” (Article 6). I have the distinct feeling, from all that he said on the matter, that Bishop Tutu was unaware of both the League of Nations’ system of mandates, and of the specific provisions of the Mandate for Palestine. He clearly was unaware of the territory the Mandate for Palestine was supposed to encompass, and he thought Israel was “created” after World War II, not mainly by Jewish efforts, but by the European powers trying to make amends for the Holocaust. He seemed to be unaware of all that the Jews themselves had done to create that Jewish state, without the slightest help from any European governments, including that of the administrator of the Mandate for Palestine, Great Britain, which far from helping to promote “close settlement by Jews on the land,” actually prevented Jewish survivors of the camps from reaching Mandatory Palestine after World War II..Could Tutu possibly have been unaware of all this? Of course he could.

Will Rogers once said that we’re all ignorant, only in different topics. Tutu and the Pope prove that point in that the one knew all about South Africa and the other knows all about Catholicism. Beyond that, their reknown will not carry them and other sources should be consulted.
Wellington says
I’m not at all certain, jewdog, that the present Pope “knows all about Catholicism.” His view of virtually everything, including Catholicism, is seen from a Latin American Leftist point of view and such a view never gets anything right.
jewdog says
My ignorance of Catholicism proves Will Roger’s point.

Agreed, Wellington. And jewdog, some people are ignorant about just about everything…

Apartheid is an over-used idea. Abolishing it in South Africa did not solve all the problems of the country. There is the problem of those who want to take the farms way from farmers who have been there for centuries and provide food for the country. This goal is promoted by the government, dominated by blacks. The same may be the case with Israel. Ending the so-called apartheid of the Arabs could lead to various catastrophes in Israel. Tutu may have been a great leader, but he apparently did not take vows of poverty, as some saintly persons do. And he was no social scientist, considering all aspects of the policies he supported. Perhaps there should be more efforts to preserve the Israelis from the so-called progressive panaceas.
Infidel says
South Africa is a classic illustration of George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’. Even years into Comrade Napoleon’s rule, if any animal expressed any doubts about anything, they’d be reminded of their previous human owner Major, if I recall his name right. Similarly, while the ANC drove what was once the richest country in Africa – not b’cos of gold or diamonds but b’cos of Capitalism, Apartheid was conveniently blamed any time any of their citizens had any objections. In the meantime, Apartheid was turned on its head against the Boers
A sad decline of a once great country – even w/ Apartheid!

I believe the human farm owner was Mr. Jones. Major was a pig–literally, in this case.
Agree with you re South Africa.
Infidel says
Thanks for refreshing my memory! Yeah, Major was the porcine equivalent of Karl Marx/Vladimir Lenin. Napoleon was Stalin, and Snowball Trotsky

I., I apologize for being unable to cite sources. Many years ago I read that the Masonic Lodge was exterminated in Russia twice, in 1823 by the Tsar and 1923 because Trotsky was a Mason who gave the secret recognition signs to the Communists and aided their elimination. There have been several mass killings of Masons in history. This was one at the hands of a traitor. There is good reason to keep membership lists of all kinds protected.
Frank Anderson says
“Please, don’t confuse me with the facts and truth. I am living in my world where I am free to create any story or explanation that I find pleasing.” About half of Germany’s Jews felt that way. How many Jews today see islam for the criminal conspiracy to exterminate them that it really is, and totally incapable of change, reform or moderation? “Those who cannot remember the lessons of the past are condemned to repeat them.” Jorge Santayana, The Life of Reason (1905).

I don’t know much about South Africa and what went on down there, but to compare it with Israel reflects a complete lack of historical, cultural, and religious insight. Yes, I know he was supposed to be a Bishop or even Archbishop, but didn’t he declare South Africa as a Rainbow Nation where all people of all religions were welcome? You may receive a lot of sympathy, love (and hard cash obviously) when you pose as an all-embracing father figure – or mother figure for that matter – so who cares if you leave behind a giant chaotic mess for a society. They can idolize and give these people all the prices in the world; their utopian fantasies never work in practice, sorry to burst some leftist’s bubble…

Trivial, no doubt, but Tutu’s interminable cackling (in the video link) immediately evoked images of the repellent Kamala Harris.

Liberal South African Jews got no gratitude for their efforts to end apartheid. Mandela and Gandhi got their first jobs working for Jewish law firms. Tutu cackled about his dentist, a fellow named Cohen.
sukabumi joe joe says
The history of South Africa is often misrepresented. When the Dutch arrived there, the land was empty. Yes, there was evidence of bloodshet, but there was noone. It was abandoned. This enabled the Dutch to create a colony there, and they lived peacefully ever after, until the discovery of gold and diamonds. This led to industrialization, and the (illegal) influx of people from surrounding countries. They had nothing to look for there. That was the origin of the apartheid regime. Not racism.
Mandela was an outright communist mass murderer. He was trained in Moscow (not kidding) and murdered many whites. That is why he was convicted to a very long prison sentence, which he served on ‘Robben Island’. They didn’t put convicts there without a reason. Mr. Tutu thus supported a communist mass murderer. Nice friends. Talking about racism, by the way, but then the reverse.
Infidel says
Yeah, aside from Bishop Tutu, Mandela is one of the most overrated people in human history. Alongside Mohandas Gandhi!

Doomer says
Thank you for the information on Tutu, I had no idea. All I knew was he had opposed apartheid. His case is ANOTHER example of a Christian leader who betrayed his faith. Leftists will hold him up as an idol to follow.
The only way to defeat an idea is with info. Recently I read ”The Polish Way: a thousand year history of the Poles and their culture” (1994) by ADAM ZAMOYSKI.
Leftists hold Western culture in contempt,Christianity as an abomination. Hold on! We have the case of Poland:
1. In the 16th century, when France and Germany were in civil war ( Protestants vs catholics), Poland ( a Catholic MAJORITY country) had full religious freedom for ALL religions ( including Judaism and, to my astonishment ISLAM).
2. Then Poland was the Poland of today, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Prussia ( majority were Germans ).
3. There were Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Protestants, and believe it or not ,
many UNITARIAN (Trinity is false, Jesus was Only a Man ) and ARIAN ( Jesus was Not God , but still divine, in 200 TEMPLES , 40,000 members ) churches,
plus a lot of Jews and about 150,000 Muslims ( Tatars, in the northeast, who had 100 MOSQUES).
And de facto, MANY PAGANS in what is now Lithania.
a) I will quote from the book:
Here the passage refers to a law put in the Polish CONSTITUTION in 1573 ( but which was already in practice) (page 91 )
”The freedom to practice ANY religion WITHOUT suffering Discrimination or Penalty was henceforth enshrined in the Constitution. This law was Observerd Rigotously by
Catholic kings, Catholic senates and an increasingly catholic population. Some ILLEGAL executions did take place, but they were FEW. When no criminal offence had been committed, even acts of EXTREME PROVOCATION went unpunished.
In 1580the Calvinist Marcin Kreza snatched the host from a priest, spat on it, trampled it, and then fed it to a passing mongrel, for which he was REPRIMANDED by the KING,
and told not to do it again. In 1572 on the other hand, after a riot which led to the BURNING down of the Calvinist chapel in Krakow, five Catholics were BEHEADED to set an example, and the CATHOLIC inhabitants started a SUBSCRIPTION for
REBUILDING the chapel, wo which BISHOP Krasinski contributed a GENEROUS sum.
The Calvinist writer who chronicled the course of the Counter-Reformation in Poland, and listed EVERY execution or sectarian killing of a PROTESTANT between 1550 and 1650, came up with a total NO higher than TWELVE.
During the SAME period, over 500 PEOPLE were LEGALLY executed for religious reasons in ENGLAND”.
STOP: here is refers to 300 Protestants killed by Catholic Queen MARY TUDOR in 5 years, and at least 200 Catholics during the reign of Protestant queen Elizabeth 1st, specifically for being Catholic. CONTINUE:
”And nearly 900 were burned in the NETHERLANDS, while hundreds more suffered CONFISCATIONS, which were UNKNOWN in Poland.”
b) When the author said NO discrimination, he meant NO discrimation based on religion, Not letting a person work in a certain post based on it.(on page 89):
”In Poland its progress was unsensational: NO INQUISITION,
no religious terrorism, no forfeitures of property, NO BARRING from OFFICE…The greatest of these,CARDINAL Stanislas Hosius was fundamentally Opposed to Violence, referring to BLOODY MARY ( My note: Mary Tudor ),
warned in 1571: ”Let Poland NEVER become like ENGLAND.” ”
c) About a LARGE number of PAGANS,on page 75,it says:
”One of the conditions of the union between Poland and Lithuania in 1385 had been the IMMEDIATE conversion of that country to Christianity.”
Here Leftists will pounce and say ”Force, force, force”. But it was on PAPER,the author continues:
”FORMAL gestures apart, LITTLE had been done to bring this about, and 150 YEARS LATER,
Grand Duke Zygmunt Augustus recorded ,”OUTISDE WILNO ( My note: the capital of Lituania),
the unelinghtened and uncivilized people GENERALLY accord that WORSHIP which is God’s due, to GROVES, OAK-TREES,
STREAMS, even SERPENTS,
both PRIVATELY and PUBLICLY making SACRIFICES to these.”
It must be added also that the JEWS there had LEGAL AUTONOMY,that is to say SELF-RULE.
I ask you, was there EVER such religious freedom in any MUSLIM country in ANY time? NO.
Johnny B says
Western authors often praise the many caliphates throughout history for their treatment of “the people of the book” (Jews and Christians) who only had to pay their fair share of taxes but where otherwise treated as equals and considered a protected class or Dhimmies. This narrative is at best uninformed and naive. Often the authors will forget to mention that Jews and Christians – while being allowed to worship – were prohibited from building new churches or even repair them at a time when they were often destroyed, burned down and what not. They will also forget to mention how Dhimmies often struggled to pay exorbitant taxes and had to sell off their properties in order to pay large sums. Dhimmies were treated as equals, but often had to wear special clothing that made them stand apart and had to act in a submissive way in order to avoid being humiliated or punished in some way. Christianity also has a history with the inquisition and so on, but it’s changed a lot since the reformation and Islam never went through a process like that so there’s no need to expect it will treat minorities any different than it always has..
Doomer says
Yes,that is true, plus those authors Never show how much women were Better Treated in Europe, even during the Middle Ages: no sex-slaves, no law letting you beat your wife.
There is the case of the PAGAN VIKINGS, before they became Christian WOMEN never attained the HIGHEST power of authority.
But we have queen MARGARET ((1353–1412). She was a woman who, due to this and that, Always LEGALLY,
based on the laws in DIFFERENT Scandinavian countries, by 1397 had become the RULER and Highest Authority of what are now the following countries and regions:
1.GREENLAND
2. ICELAND
3. NORWAY
4. DENMARK
5. SWEDEN
6. FINLAND
It became known as the KALMAR UNION, and all those countries were one nation from 1397 to 1523.
Something that never ever happened in a Muslim region.
Infidel says
So how much did Bishop Tutu speak out against black racism by the ANC, particularly under Ramaphosa? It’s easy to join what was essentially a mob when it came to opposing Apartheid, but how many are there who oppose the persecution of Boers today in South Africa? Essentially, the policies are looking very similar to Zimbabwe’s under Mugabe, and things haven’t improved since his death
gravenimage says
Infidel, I never once heard him speak out against violence against white South Africans.
Infidel says
Thought as much!
tim gallagher says
Well, of course,Tutu is one of the left’s darlings and heroes. I was never very impressed by him and thought he seemed fairly dopey.. And South Africa does seem to be descending into the violent, chaotic country that so many African countries always seem to be, so maybe Tutu and his supporters were on the wrong track with their policies and a chaotic rabble of a country seems to be the outcome.
Infidel says
Yeah, Tim! A few years ago, at the store that I worked, I had sold something to a tourist, who had a clear Boer name, but his credit card gave the option of New Zealand currency. Apparently, Boers are fleeing/have fled South Africa for either Australia or New Zealand
On a different note, even in cricket, South Africa’s board has now introduced racial quotas for their national team, so that their various races have to be proportionally represented. It’s not like they had a problem finding black cricketers, as the examples of Rabada and Philander proved, but they still instituted it anyway. As it is, all the 3 major cricketing countries – Australia, India and South Africa – had a major re-building to do after the retirement of several of their cricketing legends, but South Africa is the one that is the least likely to come up w/ a competitive side
tim gallagher says
It’s true, Infidel, that many white South Africans want to come to Australia to live. I imagine they would like to go to New Zealand as well. Quite a lot of white South African farmers have been murdered by black South Africans and so many of these farmers have been seeking to get the hell out of South Africa, as anyone would.. Occasionally, this gets a bit of media attention. I think a lot of these white South Africans, who are facing serious danger in South Africa, are not being allowed to migrate to Australia. I don’t know for sure, but maybe they aren’t politically correct enough or some such bullshit. Some are being accepted, but their acceptance is often slow in coming. Because I recognise their accents, I often hear white South Africans who are in pretty high up positions in various industries here in Australia, so they do well out here. Of course, that cricketer, Marnus Labuschagne, was brought out to Australia at age 10 and has done brilliantly. There’s a man named Andrew Abdo, who came from South Africa, who has a very high up position in Rugby League administration.I had heard about that racial quota idea for the South African cricket team. It is bound to weaken their team. Players should be selected on merit. On cricket, England have been hopeless on this tour. They collapsed completely yesterday. It is a shame because it has been hopelessly one sided and , I think, boring. I suppose when Australia tours England, it will be more interesting and a closer contest. England’s batting in particular hasn’t been up to Test match standard. I think they are blaming too much concentration on 20 over type cricket.
somehistory says
I have a good friend, very nice man, who was born there and came to the U.S. to live, work ,get married, and become a citizen. (of Dutch ancestry and White)
Infidel says
On cricket, I do think they should separate out test squads from limited overs squads at least. They can determine whether separate squads are needed b/w F50 and T20 games. Yeah, I’ve noticed Marnus Labuschagne’s performance – he’s eclipsed the likes of Steve Smith and Dave Warner, which is impressive
One side effect of this migration to Australia and New Zealand will be the death of Afrikaans as a language: Boers are good immigrants who’ll assimilate, and w/ that, they’ll become exclusively English speakers, rather than stay w/ Afrikaans. Since Blacks don’t primarily speak Afrikaans, there goes that language
tim gallagher says
somehistory, I think that, in general, the white South Africans that make it to Australia are industrious people and get on with being productive members of the society. It is very different to what some of the Muslim refugees from Iraq and other places like that do. They have done surveys and found that, years after their arrival in the country, they have very high unemployment rates and basically live off the welfare system. Infidel, I hadn’t thought about the fate of the Afrikaans language, but what you say is probably true, although there will probably some white South Africans of Dutch background who won’t be able to escape the place. On the cricket, I think you are right about some separation of the squads. On Labuschagne, he just took over Joe Root’s place as the number one batsman in world cricket a couple of days back. I feel sorry for Joe Root during this tour. He seems like a really pleasant person and has been the only batsman for England that has shown much tenacity or ability. They just haven’t been good enough on this tour..
Infidel says
Honestly, the Netherlands should have a refuge for Boer people who only know Afrikaans, so that that language can survive as a result

Desmond Tutu Dead At 90: Nil Nisi Bonum, But In This Case We’ll Make An Exception
…………
There were some things I admired about Desmond Tutu, but his ignorant mouthing off about the “Palestinians” supposedly suffering as Israel tried to defend against Jihad terror was not one of them.
He was also sadly clueless about Islam itself. Interviewed by a Muslimah in The Islamic Monthly, he said this, “It isn’t religion as such that is violent or incorrect. Actually I don’t know any religion that promotes violence. It is the adherents of whatever religion…”. He goes on to prove his igniorance of Islam and its teachings. When the Muslamah says she is sure he has read the Qur’an, he doesn’t reply to that at all.
She implies that the only problem Muslims have with the West and its Jihad terror is the existance of civilized Israel–and the gormless Tutu appears to agree. Just sickening–as well as obviously false.

Thank you for this mmuch needed article to balance out the rest of the entire world media! I am astounded that a Catholic bishop was allowed to amass personal wealth in such an outrageous sum, BTW. This in itself is an indication of corruption of character in my opinion. But that is beside the point. Tutu’s judgment was obviously deeply flawed on a number of crucial issues. The question of Israel and the Palestinians being only one.

His ideas and aspirations for so called peace in The Middle East required boycotts against Israel, so that the only Jewish state in the world would be restored to the alleged (but false) claimants to be the indigenous people of “Palestine”.
As evidence of who is a “genuine Palestinian” remember that Yasser Arafat was born in Egypt.
There are many “genuine Palestinan” names.
Masri = Egyptian, Osman = Turk, Hegazi = a person from the Mecca and Medinah region, Mughrabi = a person from the Maghreb – North Africa, mainly Morocco.
To crown it all, Muna Al Kurdi, “Palestinan Activist” from Sheikh Jarrah in Jerusalem feted out by Anti Israeli, Anti Jewish mainly Muslims in Cape Town, whose Kurdi – not “Palestinian” Family faced eviction in Jerusalem, from Jewish Land formerly illegally occupied by the Jordanians on which they were squatting.
According to Tutu Israeli responses to rocket and missile attacks on, mainly civilian Israelis were termed “diproprtionate” despite the Hamas and Islam’s genocidal agenda against not only all the Jews of Israel but also all the Jews of this planet l.
