A report released Greece’s Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs has found 2,339 incidents of desecration of the country’s Greek Orthodox churches during the five year period between 2015-2020, making them the main target among the various religious groups in the country, accounting for approximately 92.57% of the cases.
There appears to be a correlation between the increase in illegal migration and the incidents of attacks on Greek Orthodox religious churches and religious spaces during the five year period which occurred during the peak of the migration crisis.
According to the report, for 2020 there were four hundred and four (404) incidents of attacks of religious spaces, broken down by religion as follows:
Christianity:
Three hundred and eighty five (385) incidents of all kinds (vandalism, burglary, theft, sacrilege, necromancy, robbery, placement of explosive devices and other desecrations).
Specifically:
• Three hundred and seventy four (374) incidents concern the Orthodox Church, ie 92.57% of the total.
• Seven (7) incidents concern the Catholic Church, ie 1.73% of the total.
• Four (4) incidents concern the ‘Genuine’ Orthodox Christians (G.O.H.), ie 0.99% of the total….
• Islam:
Nine (9) cases, ie 2.23% of the total.

Others, when the disturbances began, abondened home to seek the security of the nearest town, but the defenceless streams of refugees were overwhelmed by bands of armed Greeks. In the smaller towns, the Turkish communities barricaded their houses and attempted to defend themselves as best as they could, but few survived. In some places, they were driven by hunger to surrender to their attackers on receiving promises of security, but these were seldom honoured. The men were killed at once, and the women and children divided out as slaves usually to be killed in their turn later. All over the Peloponnese roamed mobs of Greeks armed with clubs, scythes, and a few firearms, killing, plundering and burning. They were often led by Christian priests, who exhorted them to greater efforts in their holy work”.
In 1861, the historian George Finlay wrote:
“In the month of April 1821, a Muslim population amounting to upwards of 20,000 souls, was living, dispersed in Greece, employed in agriculture. Before two months had elapsed, the greater part was slain-men, women and children were murdered without mercy or remorse…The crime was a nation’s crime, and whatever perturbations it may produce must be in a nation’s conscience, as the deeds by which it can be expiated must be the acts of a nation.”
According to the historian C.M. Woodhouse, the entire Turkish population of cities and towns were collected and marched out to convenient places in the countryside where they were slaughtered.

Mortimer, most of the Turkish Muslims brutally occupying Greece retreated to Turkey after the Greek war for freedom began.
There is no doubt that there were some ugly incidents on the part of those fighting for independence, because there almost always are in such cases.
But to characterize the brave Greek fight against those who had invaded, brutally conquored, and oppressed their nation for centuries as some sort of unprovoked genocide against Muslims is *simply grotesque*.
Should they have just asked the Muslims to leave? How would that have worked?
In fact, I have a great deal of respect for the mostly untrained and poorly-armed Greeks fighting for their freedom against one of the most brutal militaries of the day. That you do not says a great deal about you–and little that is good.
The American Founding Fathers had great respect for this Greek fight for independence. Thomas Jefferson and then President Monroe expressed their admiration and support for the Greek fight for freedom.
You may bemoan the Greeks becoming free of the barbaric Muslim heel, but I won’t be joining in.

These incidents of Christian churches being desecrated demonstrate the incompatibility of Islam, Christianity’s enemy for 1400 years, with the values of all western countries. When it comes to islam, and not just for Christians, it is them or us. They are raised to hate and, as you say, mortimer, despise all non-Muslims. That is the mindset of most Muslims, though there do seem to be some pleasant Muslims from my experience of occasionally meeting them, but the only answer, in my opinion, is to keep this enemy out of all non-Muslim countries. The Greeks will have nothing but the usual trouble that Muslims bring, which is exactly what all of our countries will also have to endure by letting Muslims in. Islam takes diversity too far.
